Meet The PetMorons

IMG_0739.jpg

Silent lurker for many years. Ace and company are the best!
Love the pet thread. Wondered how many others have portaits of their loved ones....

17 years ago we were in Rome. Saw what one of the artists could do. Paid our money, exchanged emails for the photos and hoped we'd really see it in the mail. Several months later my mom got it.

The beautiful girl on the left is Toby. A rescue dog who started out life as Tribble, who killed her owners cat. whoops. My mom adopted her, changed her name and then pampered her with food and jewelry. (she actually did like wearing my mom's chunky necklaces). The debonair gent on the right is Jake, who was an applehead Chihuahua. She got him from birth. He never met a piece of food he didn't like. We miss both of them very much. I especially miss Toby who alerted me to an attempted break-in when I was staying at my parents home. I'm telling you the guy was horrible looking and she saved me from god-knows-what. Until her dying day she hunted and killed the mice on their patio. Jake was gotten in an attempt to ease the pain. He did a good job!

Crop the photo if need be. It hangs in my parents wet bar, and I plan on it being mine someday.

That is a remarkable painting. Worth every penny!! Thanks for sharing with us today. And thank you for the kind words. They are appreciated.

MissynSissy.jpg

Hi!

Long time lurker (2001-ish) and Big Fan of the pet thread. Finally worked up the courage to share my own family. First up is Zuzu. She was a shelter rescue gift from my then girlfriend who went on to live with me for 15 loving years. I don't know how old she was, she was full grown when she came into my life, but she was a charming little old lady to the end of her days.

Next is Lucky. Lucky is not mine. She is a barn cat who lives with my uncle in Texas protecting his vintage car collection from the ravages of field mice and other vermin. She's a barn cat and, so, a bit wild. Doesn't like people much. However, if you show the proper respect and give her time to evaluate you she might deign to allow you to pet her. Maybe. I am proud to be among that select few.

The last is the two cats who live with me currently. Missy and Sissy or, Slinker and Stinker as I like to call them. Technically they are my mothers cats. (Yes, I live with my mother. When dad died it was that or put her in a home.) When Zuzu passed I chose not to replace her. The hurt was too deep and I'm getting old enough that a new cat could outlive me. My mother is in her eighties and last year declared that she missed having a cat around the place and had found these two for sale in the local ad paper. They are litter mates and were aprox one year old when they came to live with us. They are now two and a half and have claimed me as their slave. Missy is the one in the back and her coloring is pure Siamese. Her personality matches up with the cats in Lady and the Tramp. When she wants attention she wants it NOW. When she doesn't she won't let you touch her. Her most common expression is one of 'I didn't do it'. Missy is the opposite. A total love-muffin. Would sit in your lap 24/7 if you let her. She is heavily abused since I won't pet her more than five or six hours a day.

Hope the horde enjoy the pics. I apologize for the pic size but figured you were better suited to resizing them to meet your needs than I am.

Cheers!

Fuloydo

Thanks for for your support! And thank you for the photos of your kittehs. No doubt that the Horde will enjoy these.

Hello from AZ where it was in the 80’s last week.

Attached are my 2 current favorite pet photos. The cat is Bruce. When we visited our freshman daughter at UMaine, we decided to stay in an Airbnb house owned by a UMaine professor. Beautiful house with a nice sunny conservatory, we had the added extra of having 2 cats sleep with us at night. I’m not really a cat person, but these cats were lovely.

The bloodhounds (whom you’ve featured before) are the Duchess of Marlborough and Scarlett O’Hara. They are inseparable and when not laying on my bed, are outdoors chasing jackrabbits and baying at joggers.

I wait for this thread every week. -Lurker Rebecca

I really don't want to talk to you as I put this together it is -10. Oh well. Lovely pets. The snuggly dogs are so cute. Thanks for sharing!!!

Lulu at play.jpg

Lonetown here (also Bob, Joe Pilates, Mao Tse Tongue)

The world renown Ace of Spades pet thread was kind enough to let me share pics of my pets Trixie, Gracie (2x) and Chaps. Here is our latest addition, a rescue I got as a playmate for Gracie (the Maine Coon Cat). Her name is Honolulu, I call her Lulu. She is a little over a year old. She was in a hoarder situation and part of a 50 cat rescue. They were all feral indoor cats but they told me the others socialized quickly. Lulu is coming around to humans, its only been 5 days, but already gets along well with Gracie and if that's as good as it gets, my wife and I are OK with that.

Bob

Hi Bob. Thanks for your submission of your fur kids. They look like a nice pair. Glad to hear they are getting along. Can't wait to hear some stories down the road.

31 While looking online for a new cat this week, I came across "Kozal's Christmas," an animated video about a 16-year-old cat put up for adoption at the UK's Cats Protection center. Have plenty of tissues on hand:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRx3sgnf9vA

And here's a story on the inspiration for the video. The real-life Kozal spent 210 days at Cats Protection before he was finally adopted:

https://tinyurl.com/ybu98oun

Kozal's story inspired me to step up my search for a new kitty in 2018. Pray that I find one and get the wherewithal to take proper care of her! (I prefer a female cat, but am not TOO particular.)

50 Watched Hank Curmudgeon's video of 'coons, 'possums, and kittehs.

We used to have an opossum that came to our door for food. My wife gave him dog pellets. After that she would leave them out on a semi-regular basis. If he came, and there were no pellets, he would knock on the glass patio door. She would then give a plate of pellets. Once, when my wife was home in Germany, I took a walk around the block (3.2 miles). As I came back toward the house, the opossum came out of the woods and walked next to me back to the house (approx. 0.2 miles. Opossums strike me as both creepy and cute at the same time.

57 Another opossum story.

The previous story took place in Massachusetts. This one took place in the Coulee region of western Wisconsin.

I was climbing up the wall of a coulee - almost vertical climb. As I reached the top ridge, an opossum was climbing up from the other side. We both reached the peak at the same time - our faces less than two feet apart. He turned his head to look back down from where he had just climbed (we had each climbed a couple of hundred feet). He stared down, then turned his back to me with a look on his face that said "No...please." I scooted a few feet to one side. He then came up on the ridge and walked away from me, while I came up and walked in the opposite direction.

We named them Jimmy and Miss Lillian because they were nasty jerks that would run at you and hit you from behind if you weren't watching.

86 Speaking of service animals, as temperatures are plunging this winter, maybe the NE states should reintroduce Saint Bernards. Not everyone owns cars. What if someone goes on a trek to the grocery store and is overcome by the cold. Wouldn't it be nice to have some warm, burly Saint Bernard bound up to you with a wooden cask of rum around its neck in order to revive you? Much better than EMT. Plus, they don't slash your clothing apart once they get you into the ambulance and overcharge you afterwards.

87 Lulu seems to be a Russian blue, which are my favorite cats ever.

Last year, I discovered the hummingbirds here, during a cold spell. I started feeding them and one would be waiting for me if I put the feeder out too late. I stopped feeding this summer as I had a problem with ants. First cold spell, she buzzed the window again, so I've been feeding them again. I slept in this morning so got the feeder out late. There she was, on the other side of the bush, waiting for me. When we sell this place, I will have to let the next owners know about her.

95 Kidlets assure me that BorderCollie/LabradorRetrievers (Boredors) are a real thing. I am still trying to wrap my tiny little mind around someone deliberately getting a dog that is probably just as smart as you are, and for darned sure is busier than a passel-o-3year olds. Goodness gracious, criminetly! Sweet, good-natured, want to do 'stuff' -- and all I want is a nap. My old dog is that mix, but we didn't quite realize at the time we adopted him how tiresome some of them can be. Now he's 10, so the kidlets are really lobbying for more before he leaves us.

97 The old gray guy cat went out this morning. Wanted back in after less than a minute. Smart.

Old gray guy and younger yellow guy got into a bad fight this morning. Fur flying and even a bit of blood. May have to put them outside until next year. See if that cools them down. Ha ha. Not really.

They've been fussing off and on, and maybe more so since the dog has been gone. Plus, weather has them inside more, of course. Cabin fever.

Thinking about ol' Gimli a lot. I open the passenger side door of the car for Milady, help with the seat belt, gentlemanly stuff I lernt in my yoot. Ol' Gimli used to accompany me to her door, keeping lookout, and then follow me back around to the driver's side where he and I got in. He knew his job was protecting Milady, but he was such a gentleman about it he sometimes reminded me. Good dog.

Nice pix today. Always enjoy the Peth Tread.

100 Beautiful pets all!! My grandpup Moose (a chiweenie) gave me a bit of a scare a little while ago. Daughter wasn't home and I let him out but kept a close eye because it's so bitter cold out. He came in, I gave him a treat and all seemed well. Then he started wandering around the house aimlessly, whining, then started panting. I got worried and texted daughter. He seems fine now that she's home. I think he just had a bad case of anxiety. Never seen him act like that though.

106 2017 was a bad year. I lost half my basket of deplorable cats. Rosie, my sweet heart, suffered fatty liver disease. She was a bowling ball with four legs when I got her from the Humane Society. The HS people lectured me on the dangers of obesity in adult cats, as did my vet. Since she was four years old at the time, I really wondered what these people thought I was supposed to do about it since she was sharing a bowl with two skinny cats. Unfortunately, fatty liver disease was one of those dangers.

I had the Queen of the Night put down a little before Thanksgiving. She had been born in the garage next door fourteen years ago. I managed to ship mama and her two siblings off to the Humane Society, but never managed to catch her. The first night she was alone, she howled for hours. The next night, she plopped her fuzzy little butt on my front porch and howled some more. Being the well trained cat servant that I am, I ran to the pantry, grabbed a can of tuna, opened it and hustled right outside with it. It took six weeks before she would let me touch her. One time, she vanished for a couple of days and I was worried sick. Himself told me not to worry, that she was just like a bad penny and would turn up. She did turn up and I named her Penny. For twelve and a half years, she was Hell on four paws, ruling her world with a fist of iron inside a steel glove. She went blind, though, and just crept through a very narrow area for the next year and a half. I put her down because she developed some sort of skull cancer.

So now I am down to an aging Himalayan who is trying her best to hibernate through the winter, and Rosie's littermate, a tuxedo nightmare. He tries to sneak out the door every chance he gets. (He has no front claws and the high today is supposed to be -3 degrees, falling to minus 20 by New Year's Day.) Failing that, he picks fights with the oldest dog.

On the other hand, I should be grateful that all I lost this year was two cats. Two friends lost their husbands, two other friends lost their mothers, and another friend lost her oldest son. So I am grateful even though I miss both my gorgeous girls something fierce.

I should create a new name for myself, but I'm too damn cold and lazy to do that.

112 mustbequantum: Finally am awake for the Pet Thread and it is quiet. Maybe it's me.

Evening on a cold New Year's EveEve Saturday Night. All smart pups and kits are snuggled down somewhere warm until the wind changes.

We just had our pack of deer wander up grazing right in front of the house. Lights off inside so we can see them, but I think a couple of them saw me once or twice, but we just nodded at each other and they kept on grazing. Seven of the diseased overgrown but oh so cute rodents.

Is it on New Year's Eve that the animals talk?

114 Saw a bumper sticker on the back of a pickup truck in Flagstaff one time that said, "The more time I spend around people the better I like my dog." There's something to that. And every dog "owner" thinks his dog is The World's Best Dog, which is probably true. Happy New Year to you and your dog(s). . . .
