Donald Trump the Right Man at the Right Time [Warden]

If you didn't already know that today's media is nothing more than a propaganda arm for the left, an easy giveaway would be their reaction to the Trump presidency. Just about every mainstream political analyst will tell you how much he loves the history, strategy and workings of politics. That, of course, isn't true at all. Media members are passionate about their political opinions and they certainly do get excited when they think they've won a political victory, but that is simply common partisanship, not a true interest in politics as a field of study.

To a truly dispassionate observer of political strategy and history, the rise of Donald Trump would be the event of a lifetime. His emergence and later success would evoke interest, not animosity. His presidency was a Black Swan event that any non-partisan would be immensely motivated to deconstruct.

How and why did this blustering, uncouth, under funded, politically inexperienced outsider succeed when the odds appeared to be so stacked against him? I'm not qualified to say, but I do think he has one quality that is critical to understanding his impact and it is that Donald Trump is the only person I know in America that actually possesses fuck you money.

You've probably heard people talk about fuck you money. Maybe you've talked about it yourself -- the idea of having enough wealth that you don't have to take any shit from anyone ever again. It's an attractive proposition, to say the least.

But for Americans not named Donald Trump, fuck you money is a myth. There isn't one single high profile wealthy person that can't be made to bow to the right kind of pressure. We've seen this demonstrated countless times as the social justice warriors of the left target, isolate, and humiliate powerful people into giving public apologies for the most trivial offenses.

Why, you might ask yourself, don't these people just stand up for themselves? They've got plenty of money. They should be untouchable.

The reason is that fuck you money isn't just about the money. It's about how one values money.

Wealthy people are usually materialistic, but they're not primarily interested in the utility of material things. What they're interested in is the status attached to the things that they buy.

It's true that money doesn't buy happiness, but having a good deal of it helps. The problem is that diminishing returns apply to the amount of satisfaction it can purchase. Does a $500,000 car bring five times the happiness of a $100,000 car? Its pretty clear that it does not. At a certain point, the primary difference between luxury goods is the status that they confer upon their respective owners.

What wealthy people value primarily is status. And that is why they do not truly have fuck you money--because they care what people think and this is not something that money can buy.

Which brings us back to Donald Trump. President Trump has fuck you money because he defines success differently than do other people at his level of wealth. He cannot be shamed into or out of a particular action or position because he simply does not care how the chattering class views him. This, alone, makes him a fascinating character and one deserving of study. I also believe it's what makes Donald Trump such a uniquely effective politician.

It's this quality that has Trump's opponents spinning like tops. They've gone back to the same playbook for so many years that they don't know how to adapt to someone who is immune to their historically most potent attacks. Trump has ripped back the curtain on the wizards of public shaming and revealed them to be powerless crybabies.

But he's the only man who could do it. He had both the money and the attitude necessary to the task. His supporters grasped the importance of this unique advantage early.

I am not alone in this assessment. What is less obvious is exactly what it is that makes Donald Trump tick. He loves to talk about winning, but how does he define winning for himself? My best guess is that it's getting things done when other people say you can't. It's an internally motivated, fuck you approach to life that I don't think most politicians possess.

Pundits on both the left and right have asserted that Hillary Clinton is the only possible candidate that a guy like Trump could have beaten. While I think that she was a terrible candidate, I also believe that they have it backwards. I don't think a single GOP candidate could've beaten Hillary other than Trump, as he was the only one who inspired enthusiasm within the frustrated and dispirited base.

I've heard rumors that people who actually know Donald Trump say that the man they know is nothing like the one you see on television. I suspect that this is true and that most of what you see is a clever act designed both to appeal to his supporters and to frustrate his opponents.

I also believe that Donald Trump is far more intelligent and capable than his opponents and even many of his supporters believe him to be. This video of a young Donald Trump on the David Letterman show in the 1980's gives some insight toward the man. It's worth noting that he was banging the drum about our "allies" taking advantage of us 30 years ago. Also notice how intelligent and well spoken he is. Did he somehow lose all his smarts as he grew older or is this interview a glimpse of the man behind the mask?

The big question as we move past Donald Trump's first year in office is whether Trumpism is a force that is dependent on the man bearing its title or whether it's a cultural and political wave that will retain its power when he leaves.

I don't have the answer to this question, but I think it can be confidently asserted that there is no returning to the status quo after Donald Trump has exited the stage. We are at a different place now--one that is simultaneously more visceral, raw and honest.

BREAKING: Former U.S. Marine arrested, accused of plotting a Christmas terror attack in San Francisco, targeting Pier 39, suspect had no escape plan; he planned to die, according to court documents

In a raid on his house, @PaulaReidCBS reports that the FBI found a letter, aimed by the suspect, taking credit for an attack. The letter reference @POTUS and Jerusalem, "you've allowed Donald J. Trump to give away Al Quds to the Jews."

33 This is a pretty solid analysis I think.

Remember the ice rink in NYC? The one that dragged on for years and Trump stepped in and finished it in a matter of weeks or a few months? That got brought up a few times. It was a situation where Trump was able to do something no one else could do. It's about producing results on that thing that everyone just shrugs and says that's the way it is. Trump cuts through the bs and minutiae and gets the thing done. Even if he can't right away, he'll pivot to something else and move forward. I believe we haven't seen the end of getting rid of Ocare. He's going to stay at it until he gets it gone.

I also worry about the movement after Trump exits stage left. It's almost certainly going to see a number of grifters move in and try and hijack the movement for their own gain. Sort of like what happened after Reagan left. The GOPe came in and used the language but hollowed out the movement and turned it into milquetoast moderation.

We really do need hard people to carry the movement forward. I don't mean hard in a totalitarian or authoritarian sense, but rather someone who just keeps pounding away at the problems while keeping the Left and their lapdogs busy chasing their tails.

38 Trump's speaking style is repetitive positive reinforcement (or negative if he's attacking) of the type used in advertising and sales. You can already see it in the Letterman clip like when he is asked about what his life was like growing up and he just repeats that he had a wonderful family life in multiple ways with slightly different phrasing. But Americans have gotten so much stupider in the intervening years, requiring that the vocabulary that he employs now to be so limited that the repetition gets hard to take for anyone with an above-room-temperature IQ.

50 Thank you for your opinion and analysis. Outstanding.

I was a Cruz supporter, but even while he was alive for the R nomination, I was very worried that he could defeat Hillary. In hindsight, I like to think it would have been close in the popular vote, maybe very close to the Trump/Hillary count, but I don't believe Cruz could have gotten 270 Electoral College votes. Those Obama-to-Trump voters in the upper Midwest would have gone for Hillary, I'm afraid.

Merry Christmas, all!

The big question as we move past Donald Trump's first year in office is whether Trumpism is a force that is dependent on the man bearing its title or whether it's a cultural and political wave that will retain its power when he leaves.

Problem is, the base and the GOPe are going to learn two totally different lessons from the Trump Presidency.

The base will learn that putting the US first, being honest, firm and not taking shit off of anyone is the way to both win elections and govern effectively.

The GOPe will learn that all you need to do is be crass, boorish and dickish, and the base will be fooled into following you into whatever policy will get you invited to the really cool cocktail parties.

107 Okay I would have posted this a couple of threads back, but it's still important. This is a nice chart of Federal land ownership. It's from 2004, but it shows BLM ownership as well as tribal ownership.

http://bit.ly/2Dx35jY

To summarize: NV 87.6%
OR 55.5%
AK 67%
WA 32.8%
UT 67.9%
WY 49.7%

The government does not own states in the mid West and the East coast the way that they do out here. And the current figures are higher than this. How can you be a sovereign state, when the Feds control over half the property? You can't and it's time to change that.

119 West Virginia prosecutors will not pursue charges against a trial lawyer who allegedly funneled campaign donations to a judge who secured a $38 million verdict for one of his clients.

The investigation was prompted by a Daily Caller News Foundation report that suggested a Florida-based corporate entity unlawfully funneled thousands of dollars to Justice Robin Jean Davis' 2012 reelection bid. 150 I think of Trump as a working-class billionaire. He understands what everyday Americans think, yet he has the savvy of a world-class businessman.

To think of him as a rookie is a mistake. Although he doesn't always know some of this inside baseball, he's a very quick study. And a long-term strategist; he's been hanging around this forever. Multiple encounters with Reagan, Nixon, the Clintons, the Perot movement, etc. He's thought a lot about this.

While he's not an instinctive conservative, his pro-American instincts usually lead him in a conservative direction. He's the most pro-American president since Reagan; it's their common trait. Also leadership. People instinctively respond to real leaders.

I was once as skeptical as could be. The president has completely won my confidence, respect and gratitude. Big Time.

167 It's useful to see him in these old interviews. People who don't know Trump at all are ignoring a wealth of information.

Compare and contrast David Letterman here with the style of Dave Rubin. That's the archetype of the new media and its appeal over the old media. Rubin is polite, nice and extremely likable, but also a "deep listener". It is up to you to find what you don't like in a controversial guest, but the opportunity is there if you listen. If they say something bad, it comes out eventually.
Letterman, you're on every night, so let a guy talk. You don't have to spoon shitty simple questions as if this was Trump's first interview.

That's because of Anthropogenic Climate Change.

The extra CO2 in the atmosphere, combined with gravity flux density changes due to the larger and larger clump of humans in SoCal, has changed the atmospheric photonic resonance reflectance coefficient in the SoCal region.

That plus all the ash in the local air due to the recent wildfires driven by humans raping the landscape, means not only changing optical effects for ascending rockets, it also means the next launch out of Vandenberg will divert direct to your front yard.

Not planning out his every move, because things are constqntly changing, but imagining different scenarios and what he might do in each one. So he's improvising, making it up as he goes, but all along lines he's been thinking of and "planning" for, for years. I liked Cruz best from the start, and I hate Trump's branding him as lying Ted, but I agree with those who doubt whether he (Cruz) would have won.

Trump wears his persona like a suit and is welcome to be his own man at home. I can respect that. people can revile that public persona and it means as much to him as a fussy person disliking his suit, because thats what it is... a uniform or armor he wears for a purpose. Does not mean much if someone dislikes it or not, as long as it works. So far it works. Who his is is his business and he can keep it that way, it makes him stronger. I like his suit. it works for me.

Just like Reagan. Reagan was a movie star, and was completely rooted in California - he could care less what a bunch of East Coast liberals thought of him. Besides, California liberals hated him for the eight years that Reagan was Governor, and Reagan noticed that he needed need their approval to be successful.

"I also believe that Donald Trump is far more intelligent and capable than his opponents and even many of his supporters believe him to be."

Again like Reagan. Reagan's greatest political strength is that his opponents thought he was a complete idiot, and Reagan kept humiliating them, while they kept wondering what had happened. Trump is the same way - his opponents focus on his Tweets, and not on his governing.

The big question as we move past Donald Trump's first year in office is whether Trumpism is a force that is dependent on the man bearing its title or whether it's a cultural and political wave that will retain its power when he leaves.

Zombie thinks it's a sign that the left's attempts at conditioning, the long march, etc. have in a sense failed. Don't count out the politics - the genius of the tax bill is that the politics of the blue states are irrevocably changed.

I live in Oregon, where anybody affluent is going to be above the $10,000 limit on state and local tax deductions.

That means that affluent people in Oregon are going to pay **all** the costs of any new tax, and **all** the costs of any new bond issue - they don't get to pass off a chunk of those incremental new costs to the Feds.

This is terrifying the ruling Democrats in Oregon - new taxes and new bonds are hard to pass (even in Oregon), and the political calculus has just shifted, making it much harder to pass these things.

You don't get to write off fees on your Federal taxes.

For years, every new tax and bond issue that has come down the pike in Oregon has come with well-publicized reassurances that it wasn't so bad, because you could write off the costs on your Federal tax return. (Portland actually considered having a city-wide progressive income tax a few years ago, in the guise of a "street fee".)

The Left is already gnashing their teeth here, and whining that this is going to make it more difficult to pass the necessary state and local tax increases needed to compensate for the Fascist Age of Trump.

263 The big question as we move past Donald Trump's first year in office is whether Trumpism is a force that is dependent on the man bearing its title or whether it's a cultural and political wave that will retain its power when he leaves.

I hate the word "Trumpism", since it implies there's some kind of overarching political philosophical framework involved in the way Trump governs. There isn't. He may be riding a cultural and political wave, but it's not like anybody can point to a book named The Principles of Trumpism.

Trump is in office because the Democrats decided to put up the only candidate he could beat. He's not very popular, personally - his polling is worse than any president in my lifetime at this stage in his administration. He doesn't seem to have much influence with voters - he couldn't get Luther Strange nominated in Alabama and couldn't get Roy Moore elected.

I agree he's more intelligent than most of his critics, especially in the media. And I agree he's been relatively successful in his first year. But let's not wash each other's backs here - Obama could have mopped the floor with him had a third term been allowed.

Rather than take apart the entire ban, however, three members of the 9th Circuit ruled that only the prohibitions on foreign nationals who have a bona fide relationship within the United States should be stopped.

The dispute will not return to the Supreme Court until after a ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit in Richmond, Va.

I agree that's part of it. But every Republican president faces the same headwind. IMO it's also party Trump's fault because he's given the media a lot of ammunition a more disciplined president wouldn't have provided.

Also, in American politics the last guy to touch health care loses. That's just the way the rules work.

Trump has one really big winning issue if he works it right - immigration. But it looks like he's starting to go wobbly, and if he caves on DACA or the wall he's pretty much dead, politically.

He spoke at a business conference I was at back in 2005, and he was one of the most gracious, motivating speakers there at that whole conference - I was nothing but impressed with him. Yeah it's a bit anecdotal, and it could have been a bit of a front there, but I do think that his public face is a bit of a ruse, and he actually is a decent guy.

304 This is the difference between being a winner or a loser: a winner does what he says he will do; a loser does not. It's easy to be a winner: stop talking shit. Act in accordance with your speech.

The size of the goal is self-determined and the scope of the accomplishment is unimportant: it's the principle. For example, if you say you're going to wake up at 8:00am tomorrow, and you wake up at 8:00am, you're a winner. If, OTOH, you say you're going to wake up at 8:00am tomorrow, and you wake up at 8:10am, you're a loser. The glamor of the goal doesn't matter: If you say you'll climb to the top of Mount Everest and only get half-way up the mountain, you're a loser.

Do you fulfill all of your goals as you---not society---defines them? You can lead a quiet, humble life and still be a winner. You can lead a high-powered life and still be a loser. (Hi, Hillary!)

Also, chance enters into it; our goals are sometimes affected by things outside our control. Do you know what you'll do if you lose? Most people know what they'll do if they win, but have no idea of what they'll do if they lose. Winners know what they'll do if the situation gets out of their control. They always have an alternative to skin the cat, so to speak.

Donald Trump is very intelligent, hard-working, honorable and, moreover, indomitable. He has a rare gift for optimism; regardless of what kind of assholes he has to deal with, he never throws up his hands and despairs. He realizes that time plays a factor in solving problems and never panics. He assumes there is something good about almost everyone he deals with, and he asks them to aspire to live up to their best. He forgives easily. He assumes that teams of people of good will can solve problems regardless of how seemingly intractable. Trump's an old-fashioned boy---his word is his bond; if he tells you something, he means it.

That's why he's made his billions---because he is among the very best C-level executives. And he loves America.

Trump makes sense if you understand that he's doing this because he loves the country and felt an obligation to lend his talents to turning it around. Trump makes sense when you understand that he is thinking of the world he's leaving his grandchildren.

Do not underestimate the power of money in the paycheck. It's the only thing that really speaks to the working class (yes there is now a working class in America - created by miserable Democrats - and by the grace of God they are all Trumpers and potential Trumpers). Everything else is GARBAGE.

313 "The big question as we move past Donald Trump's first year in office is whether Trumpism is a force that is dependent on the man bearing its title or whether it's a cultural and political wave that will retain its power when he leaves."

Honestly, as a 35 year Republican voter I was at the end of the rope and planned to sit out the last election for president had Trump not won the nomination and I say that not as someone who would have taken his ball and gone home because my guy didn't win the nom but as the dumbass 35+ year Republican voter who simply had enough.
I now dare say that with movement in Congress under Trump starting to move in a direction other than total capitulation to all that is Democrat. I now have a glimmer of hope.
That being said. If the GOP Congress turns back to the old standard then when Trump is gone, so am I, finally.

Very well said. I think few people really understand Trump, because there are fewer people than ever around who can imagine or conceive of this sort of man. It used to be an American type. I am blessed to have had a father in the vein of Trump -- a high-level Manhattan CEO who was confident, irreverent, creative, patriotic, honest and successful. When I see and hear Trump, I see images and hear echoes of my father. I think I can tell what is genuine, what is an act, and "where Trump is coming from."

317 "The big question as we move past Donald Trump's first year in office is whether Trumpism is a force that is dependent on the man bearing its title or whether it's a cultural and political wave that will retain its power when he leaves."

Trump's strategy or Trumpism is an effort to set up self sustaining levers that once set continue to function on their own. It takes active action to change the set course. For instance his 2 cuts of regulations for every one 1 added or his travel Ban. Even his WALL when it gets built. His tax cuts all of them are set up to continue his policies without any other action needed. To reverse those polices will take active action and "force" because they all also benefit voters in a big way.

for comparison many of Obama's policies take action to continue. Like Obamacare takes constant funding sources, takes a mandate and force to keep people buying it. Or Obama's Iran deal, his regulations etc...

So on the face of things it appears Trumpism will last a long time more than Obamaism or bushism.

Posted by: unseen1 at December 23, 2017 07:46 AM (/DO5l)

318 "So on the face of things it appears Trumpism will last a long time more than Obamaism or bushism."

I hope so. But Trumpism as an active exhilarating and therapeutic force in our lives and in our political discourse will end with Trump. There is simply no one like him. He is inimitable. His ability to start conversations and to put them into new light and perspectives, to shake up our "paradigms", is entirely unique.

321 "Trumpism" is nothing more than the old-fashioned desire for American self-determination and living under the rule of law as expressed in the U.S. Constitution. It will continue to live as long as we want to be free.

The fact that it is considered to be such a radical idea by many of our fellow citizens, deserving of a new name, is proof of how far America has strayed from its original ideals and testimony to the total breakdown of our educational system.
