He belongs to my oldest and they now live in Chicago. He was almost dispatched as a kitten by Falco, who was reluctantly convinced that Loki was not vermin. -MichaelThanks for the photo Michael. Cute pets! I call this pair of pics, "Tranquility amidst chaos." I took it just a few minutes ago as we were decorating for Christmas and I noticed Izumi, the rescue khet who was found jumping from car to car in the parking lot at work, asleep in the middle of everything. We tried to locate an owner for her without success, and now we're sort of stuck with her. - Victor Tango Kilo (ex V-the-K)Quite the story. Stuck? Yeah, if that's what you call it. That Deplorable SOB Van Owen here.We appreciate your patience when submitting photos. This goes to show you sooner or later your pet will be in The Pet Thread. Find attached a picture of Sophie, taken a couple of years ago. Waiting patiently for Christmas. She's been through a rough patch lately, but is looking pretty much like the picture. I may have sent this before, but do not recall. Anyhow, it's Christmas. See you on the blog.-Mike HammerMerry Christmas to you and yours Mr. Hammer. Hello Misanthropic Humanitarian,Quite the pup there Andy. Thanks for the submission. Who knew that there were swimming pools in Canada, Eh? Hello MH! This is Mrs. Cannibal Bob with our boys, Ernest and Julio. They have both passed on but they were epic kitties. Ernest is in the front. He had a big empty head and a heavy paw with any lizard he caught. Julio had the brains and the finesse. They stayed with my mom for a bit while we traveled (although they were great travelers and walked with leashes). She couldn't tell them apart so after Ernest got himself locked in a cabinet overnight, she put a red dot on his forehead saying that he didn't mind it. It lead to his first nic, Mahatma Ernie. Julio was constantly letting us know when Ernest had gotten himself locked somewhere he shouldn't be. Despite the huge quantity of fur, they were the best!It seems all the good pets shed like there is no tomorrow. Thanks for sharing. From: Long-time Ace reader… Not a poster, though. But for ID purposes, just call me… Arctic Fox.Thank you for jumping into the thread. Near Bethlehem some time ago, A flock of sheep was dwelling. To shepherds, sheep, and sheep dog, too, Angel choirs came telling. Good news, not fear, to all the world, A baby in a manger. "We'd leave to see," the shepherds said, "But our sheep would be in danger." "To watch the flock, we'll leave the dog, While seeking mankind's Savior. The dog will guard and keep the sheep From wandering behavior." Though disappointed not to go To Bethlehem's blest stable, The dog felt duty-bound to work As well as it was able. The shepherds came at last and praised God for Christ revealing, Too wonder-struck to praise the dog That gave them time for kneeling. But God Himself spoke to the dog In tones for canine hearing. His words inspired all dogs to serve For ages persevering: "Good and faithful servant, well done." -- Kent Dannen Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at December 23, 2017 03:06 PM (2tkWR) Posted by: Anon Y. Pluto is so precious! But really, all the PetMorons are winners. No surprise there.
"Tranquility amidst chaos" def. struck a chord here. My Pippin (elderly, diabetic, incredibly stupid but lovable Maine Coon) has an ongoing feud with my artificial Christmas tree, which has been known to produce similar messes! Said feud is now in its sixth year and manifests in the form of gnawing on the branches, bumping into the trunk, and increasing numbers of hairballs with little flecks of green in them. The vet says it's not going to poison or choke him, so my choices are to either move the tree into a cat-free zone or put up with it and just make sure all the good ornaments aren't on the bottom branches. I ended up just moving the ornaments. Who am I to deny my kitteh his seasonal treat of inanimate-object-murder? Merry Christmas to all our morons, furry and otherwise! Need to tell the story of my dad:
When we were little, he said Santa didn't need more cookies but the reindeer needed some carrots. In our family, we put out carrots for the reindeer. He also told us that God gave pets the chance to talk to Santa once a year and let Santa know how well they were treated. Believe you me, we treated those pets like gold all of Advent (although we were a joke family because we had our pets inside). We never understood other families and their milk and cookies -- we just worried about the reindeer. Posted by: mustbequantum at December 23, 2017 03:14 PM (MIKMs) 25

Had to make a last minutr trip to the pet store. We were sitting around thinking our holiday shopping and decorating was done when we remembered this is our first Christmas with Prince the Poodle. A situation not to be tolerated. He now has a Christmas stocking to hang up with a variety of treats and chew sticks (American made) to put in it.
He may not know about the holiday but it makes us feel better. Posted by: JTB at December 23, 2017 03:19 PM (V+03K) 29

Just got a bit of a surprise. One of Prince's gifts is several larger (for him) rawhide chew sticks. When he gets smaller ones he gnaws them right away. This one he took into his kennel, buried it under the sleeping pad and pushed his blanket on top of that. We have never seen him do anything like that in the months we've had him. It is adorable. Ah cats and Christmas trees. I remember the year our Siamese cat (Mother kitty was her name) had 3 kittens. They would all take a running start down our long hallway and fly up the Christmas tree. Hearing it go crash was a nightly experience. We kids thought it was hysterical, my parents not so much!
We always laughed about calling the cat "Mother" and wondered what the neighbors thought if they heard us yelling "Mother! Get off the table!" "Mother, come down from there!" One summer I volunteered as a zoo camp docent. On elephant day, the keeper would give a little talk while feeding the elephants whole watermelons.
Then we docents would get on the elephants with the kids and take a ride around the enclosure. A few years later one of the elephants we used to ride got pissed off and killed a keeper. Oops, so much for that. No more rides, and the entire exhibit was redone so they could go to "protected contact" only. I think that's the way all zoos do it now. Looking back it's kind of hard to believe that taking a spin on the elephants was so routine. Posted by: stace at December 23, 2017 03:53 PM (6HFDU) 63
The ultimate cat costumery was the japanese company catprin "a tailor of cat". Unfortunately, the website seems to be gone. Doing an image search still shows some of the costume images that people saved. There's also the site http://www.spatch.net/cattown/ which is a weird comic strip type parody that uses catprin costumes in lieu of illustrations.

I took an elephant ride in Thailand. I thought, when the heck will I ever do this again? That was probably different: There was a mahoot who probably knew the elephant well, and the elephants there are probably more used to people in general. So granddog usually comes with 'toys'. My own take is that rawhide chews, axehandles, stuffed animals, etc are too close to forbidden things. They are only allowed their own toys. It really saves confusion and stress for the pets as well as the owners. Granddog can slide under the bed at her house and get right to where you can't pull her out (she has cats). Son pulled up the bed and scared that dog into kingdom come.
None of us has figured out how to 'boredor'-proof the day crate. I was lucky with mine in that he allowed his crating -- the granddog works very hard to get out. Challenge time for her. Posted by: mustbequantum at December 23, 2017 03:58 PM (MIKMs) 67

Yeah, just a guess, but I imagine in Asia the people and elephants pretty much grow up together, whereas in a zoo there's a some turnover. Our zoo had a longtime elephant keeper, and he wasn't the one who was killed; the victim was a relatively new guy. CaliGirl, I'm kind of scared of elephants too after that one I trusted picked that keeper up and slammed him down on his head. While we were driving the path, we came up to a small group of elephants blocking the road. The shade from the nearby tree happened to be right where the path was. The driver just kept blasting the horn and revving the engine, and eventually the pachyderms arose and walked away. If you have cats, or puppies, there are hooks and eyes to ensure the cat or puppy doesn't take down the tree. Haven't used mine in a while, but those bits of hardware are still there. One of those little eye hooks and some fishing line makes sure that the cat won't get the triumph of taking something big down. 'Bless your heart kitty' you know they would do it and then run along the top of any shelves and 'accidentally' knock down anything breakable. Avoid the whole drama scene and tie up the tree.

So my next door neighbor had a "company" bring 2 horses over to give the kids rides for their daughters birthday party. It's was sweet and wrong on several levels. It was actually a white pony dressed as a unicorn and a big draft type horse. Both horses were very gentle and sweet. They did look a bit rough to my untrained eyes though. The big draft horse looked a bit boney/skinny. So it was these two older, kinda rough looking dudes. One guided the horses around with the kids giving rides around the front yard and the other did "face painting". Now, this dude was the worlds worst face painter. I mean, the stuff he painted kinda, sorta looked like what it was supposed to be. He was also using "craft paint" not face paint paint. It was like two homeless guys got ahold of some horses and paint and went into business. It was ....odd.

Our crew is extra-loving in the recent cold weather. Poodly puppy is getting better about having pieces of rose bush removed from his fur, at least when he has a leash on. Posted by: KTbarthedoor at December 23, 2017 04:25 PM (BVQ+1) 88

I'm kind of scared of elephants too after that one I trusted picked that keeper up and slammed him down on his head. Posted by: stace at December 23, 2017 04:16 PM (6HFDU) :O Posted by: rickl at December 23, 2017 04:25 PM (sdi6R) 89

It was like two homeless guys got ahold of some horses and paint and went into business. It was ....odd.

--- Not really, they came in a really old truck and rusty horse trailer. No signs or advertising. Posted by: lin-duh at December 23, 2017 04:30 PM (kufk0) 93

CaliGirl, I'm kind of scared of elephants too after that one I trusted picked that keeper up and slammed him down on his head. This was decades ago, btw, and that old girl is still around, even though her two longtime buddies from back then have passed on. ===== Animals have been domesticated for millenia, but there is a basic lack of respect for animals. So these huuuuuuge beasts are going to act like nannies? Feh. Posted by: mustbequantum at December 23, 2017 04:37 PM (MIKMs) 96
HI!
What, exactly, will it take to remove the "almost" from the "world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread"? Because, I'm sure it's famous from Germany to Australia, if not Tehachapi to Tonkawa. Posted by: mindful webworker's cats' chief of litterbox cleaning at December 23, 2017 04:43 PM (dLr9j) 97
Oh, cat and I prefer plain old TidyCat with the little blue sprinkles. The newer stuff is clumpy and dusty. Probably a reason that the old stuff is so respected.

Posted by: lin-duh at December 23, 2017 04:32 PM (kufk0) You're right. I would not pay anything for that kind of "talent". Posted by: logprof at December 23, 2017 04:44 PM (GsAUU) 99
That's weird, Lin-duh.
=== Not that it matters, but looking it up, I was wrong about the "killer" elephant still being alive. It's her old buddy Lucky who's still alive. To be fair to the elephant who did the deed, I never saw her get upset at any of us visitors to her enclosure. I think she may have had a personal issue with that keeper, which is not to say he was a bad guy and deserved it. She didn't like him telling her what to do for some reason. stace, if your still here. Did an elephant ever hug you with it's trunk?

Nature's miracle is good stuff.
I use their litter and disposable boxes. Of course, there is no substitute for regular maintenance... Posted by: navybrat at December 23, 2017 05:08 PM (w7KSn) 105
I liked clumpNseal but bought a bag of the lightweight a couple years ago and the scent was way too much, I tossed it unused. I was skeered they had added extra scent to the regular weight as well so never bought it again. I have had a hard time finding unscented (would be ok wiht very lightly scented) clumping cat litter. I was buying a lightweight formula but it was dusty so I've been buying Safeway store brand. Not dusty but it doesn't clump super well.

I've used the regular multi-cat Clump 'n Seal for years and I don't find it overly perfumey. I'd prefer unscented, but the C&S has low dust and clumps very well so I stick with it.

thanks beatnik, That was my experience with it, but when the box of lightweight clumpNseal smelled like someone spilled cheap perfume in it, I shied away from buying anymore of the regular to test if it was same lighter scent it had been originally or was going to also be over scented.

Late to the thread oddly enough. And apparently my niece's Dexter is mainly Boston terrier with some Labrador and beagle.
BTW, we had the pool filled in a couple of years ago because we'd had two major liner tears over 3 years and weren't going to get it replaced again; as well all of the grandkids/nieces/nephews are all grown now and not over to use it like they once were, or when I and my brothers were kids. And in winter with the water level drained about 18" from the top, my friends and I would play broom-ball on the ice that formed in the covering tarpaulin. One year one of the guys put one leg through the ice and the tarpaulin (in the shallow end) up to his crotch so we figured we were too heavy to play there any more.
