Disney Buys Fox Movie and TV Entertainment Properties for $52 Billion in Stock

I think the actual Fox broadcast network (as opposed to its content-producing studios) will remain part of Fox, as there are rules against the same company owning two tv broadcasters in the same market. FoxNews will remain with Fox, too, as will FoxSports.

But that report says that Fox's other cable channels, FX, FXX, and NatGeo (which I didn't know Fox owned) will be going to Disney.

So Always Sunny will now be a Disney product. And Archer.

I had previously read that the Murdoch sons wanted some high-ranking positions in Disney, should the deal go through -- but I don't hear anything about that.

Will they just be major shareholders? And if so, does that trip additional anti-trust concerns? Fox and Disney might not formally own together both ABC TV and Fox TV, but if the Murdoch family owns all that stock in Disney plus the Fox broadcast TV business, is that an anti-trust concern? Will they have to sell of their shares to avoid anti-trust concerns?

I dunno.

Ed Morrissey talks about possible anti-trust action. Even though the deal is structured to avoid the red flags of a merger, this still reduces the Big Six of movie studios down to a Big Five. And one of the "Big Five" isn't big at all -- Paramount is often called the "minnow" of the Big Six (now five).

And will Paramount remain its own studio? They took a $500 million loss a year ago which they're still writing down. One can imagine Paramount wishing to merge with or be bought by some other studio.

What would the anti-trust concern be? Well, Disney is already imposing some tough conditions on exhibitors (theaters) -- for example, demanding that a Star Wars film has to be shown on a theater's biggest screen for at least four weeks. True, theaters don't have to take that deal, but that means they'd not be showing the biggest film in the country in a week in which most other studios do not release films (to stay out of the way of Star Wars).

Disney already has a lot of power here. Now that they'll be about half of the remaining Big Five (or Big Four and a Half), they can impose those kind of conditions more frequently for more of their franchises.

And franchises they will have. Disney already had Star Wars, the Disney kids' brand, Pixar stuff, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe; now they'll be adding the two parts of the comic book Marvel universe that Fox had, the Fantastic Four and the jewel of the crown, the X-Men franchise(s).

The rights to Spider-man are still owned by Sony/Columbia, though they've worked out a deal by which Marvel Studios produce Spider-man movies while giving a lot (or all) of the theatrical profits to Sony. But Sony could end that deal when it likes.*

And Universal actually owns The Hulk, but Universal routinely licenses that to Marvel Studios.

I suppose they could do their own Hulk movie, but... eh, they tried that (the Ang Lee ) film and it didn't make a lot of money. Even the Marvel licensed version didn't make a big amount of money.

Meanwhile, this gives Disney even more of a library for its own coming streaming service which will compete with Netflix. Now armed with all of Disney's library plus all of Fox's library, plus whatever films they license from other studios, they just might bump Netflix down to number two in this market.

On the other hand, I do think maybe Disney bought high, just as they did when they bought out LucasFilm. I think we're past peak Star Wars and peak Marvel. This stuff will continue to make money, but I have to imagine at some point the value of these properties will begin to decay. Just as the value of ESPN has decayed.

I think we're in an entertainment bubble. There's a feeding frenzy to buy content creation companies or invent them. But there is an upper limit to how much TV (including movies on TV) people are actually capable of watching.

Bob Iger, often rumored to be running as an unpologetic Social Justice Warrior presidential candidate in 2020, is said to have his hands too full to do that now, but is he? Half of this shit runs on autopilot (Kevin Feige needs little oversight) and he'll be able to claim, "I make great deals."

* Sony's also threatening -- I don't know how seriously to take this -- to make a series of movies with minor characters that they have the rights to through the Spider-man deal, which will not feature Spider-man (he being on loan to Marvel). So there's claims there'll be a Spider-man-free Venom movie, and a Spider-man-free Silver Sable and Black Cat team-up. I just don't believe the latter at all, and I barely believe the former.

PS, Marvel comics has for some time been imposing a strike against the X-Men and Fantastic Four, in a calculated bid to make those properties less valuable and hence more likely to be sold back to Marvel Studios for exploitation. The Fantastic Four's book got cancelled, and I hear that the X-Men stuff is all recycling old villains and old plots, because Marvel comics doesn't want to create any new characters or new ideas -- any new stuff they debuted in X-Men would go right to Fox, due to the rights deal Fox had for all stuff originating in X-Men comics.

Thus the thread of doing the Dark Phoenix storyline in the next X-Men film... again.

Guys, we get it. Enough of the Dark Phoenix.

So, on the comics side, for anyone who cares (and based on sales numbers -- no one cares), at least Marvel comics might re-start the Fantastic Four comic and do some X-Men stories that aren't just The Gang Recycles Their Trash.

22 What bothers me about this is that the government is super careful to prevent all sorts of mergers and concentration of control over one sector of the economy or another. If two steel companies are going to merge, lots of congressional hearings take place, news articles are written.

But nearly all the entertainment, toy, snack food, and television stations in the nation are controlled by 3 mega corporations now. And Disney just ate one.

Disney is talking about yanking all their properties off Netflix now, for their own Disney-only channel. I don't think anybody wins from that.

23 We may have reach Marvel's peak but there is no way we are past it. Avengers 3 and 4 which are coming back to back in 2018 and 2019 will be the biggest comic book movie event in all of human history. Featuring all of Marvels characters together, side by side in both films (including the Guardians of the Galaxy). They will make gobs of money. But certainly this may signal the beginning of the end. Marvel is planning on killing off more than one main character, and future franchises might not finds lead actors as compelling as these ones.

51 I cut the cord about 2 years ago, and haven't watched Fox News since then. I wasn't watching it much before then, in any case. I'll scan their website, probably once a day, but that's it.

There's not a lot of news out there anymore. Everyone is a "commentator" and use that to defend why they aren't unbiased. Think about it: Fox puts out about as much on-air news time as ABC or CBS. An hour in the evening, plus updates through the day. OK, so they have a "ticker." So what?

Prior to the evening news? "The Five," which isn't news. Then we have the things from 7:00PM, all of which aren't news. CNN is this times two. They are NEVER not spinning.

So the "news" networks are generally a waste of time. If I want opinion, and I do, I come here.

As for Fox's other assets, I could care less.

Yeah, I've seen people speculate that the most valuable part of the Fantastic Four rights package is the villains, Doom and Galactus, because Marvel villains generally suck and they really need serious Big Bads to sustain interest in the next "Phase" of Marvel movies.

By the way, in the Infinity Gauntlet movie, Thanos has four minions who serve him. They kind of look like the Fantastic Four, in the sense that one is female, and one is a huge bruiser.

Here's an idea I just had: This gives Marvel the opportunity to claim these four underbosses are iare actually mind-controlled and body-transformed Fantastic Four, which may be revealed upon their defeat, which may be an explanation as to how the heroes can stop Thanos (like, the FF is now on the heroes' side, and have inside information about Thanos), and they get Reed Richards' brain and tech to help.

Also, it's an easy way to explain why the FF has been missing from the marvel universe -- they went out into space and got captured and transformed by Thanos.

But now they'll be back on earth.

Netflix doesn't own those characters; they invested in the production, but I don't think they have any ownership beyond the series produced. And I imagine, given how angry Marvel is at its past decisions to permanently license characters, there's some provision permitting the series already produced to lapse back to Marvel after a time, or some kind of forced repurchase clause.

176 >>>It's a cool idea but I fear they are much too far gone on the production of Avengers 4 to do something that major.

Spider-man was added fairly late in the Civil War production. They were trying to get him, but couldn't, so the script featured more Black Panther. When they did strike the deal, they quickly wrote Spider-man into it and cast him and etc.

This was before filming and all (I think), but late in the scouting/set-building/etc process (again, I think).

besides, in the idea I'm proposing, the revelation of the FF is a very late, near-the-end-of-the-second-act-in-Avengers-4 sort of thing.

181 If this is done right (and the MCU track record is fantastic so far,) the MCU is going to get even better.

Yes I loathe hollywood, but I love having fun, (relatively) uplifting event movies to take a whole group to.

So in this case, go Disney. Start a rumor you're going to buy WB while you're at it, just to see the internet melt down.

(Plus they'd totally make a Disney Princess named Martha just to mock the you-know-what catastrophe.)

Posted by: What's a Seawolf? at December 14, 2017 03:59 PM (72PAC)

182 adding the FF would be pretty easy: Three characters are CGI and one's invisible.

The Invisible Woman? Easy to add. Just have people trip occasionally and then say "Damn you, Invisible Woman!"

183 Back when Walt was in charge you can say one thing about Disney. Their movies and TV show were family friendly and he really looked after his child stars. There never would have been any of those trashy bimbos around when he was around, and there certainly when have been no child sexual abuse.

Sadly that is no longer true. His ashes are probably spinning in his grave

A few years ago an X-rated pron movie was made of Star Trek The Next Generation.

It has since been re-edited with all teh sex scenes deleted, and is now a Star Trek "fan-flick." Unfortunately, the original cannot be found on the internet, anymore. But you can find some short clips of the pron scenes. Weird.

Everyone praised it so much that I expected to hate it. But, shockingly, I neither hated it nor loved it. For me (I know this is a rare opinion) it was a great big "Meh."As juvenile as I thought, but not totally cringe-inducing. And what is it with the endless "origin stories"??? First you need to make the audience CARE about a character enough for them to be interested in the character's origins. Take an early superhero-of-sorts, Sherlock Holmes. For the first 20 stories or so, Conan Doyle just portrayed him as a nearly superhuman thinking machine, and then only AFTER the character was famous dis he get into his family story (with Mycroft and so forth). That's what they should do with modern superheroes -- don't drag us through an origin story of someone we don't yet care about.

Yeah I agree. My friends and I have talked about this quite a bit. I've probably whined about it on here too, but the need to put origin stories into superhero movies is really annoying and time consuming. Its like having a third of Dr No be James Bond's background. We need to see Indiana Jones as a little boy learning Greek from his dad in the first movie!

Just show the heroes doing their thing. Eventually let some stuff slip, but you don't need to show origins. Just assume they're in the story and go for it.

Living Lightning, a token Hispanic Avenger from back in the 90s, flirting with a cop. Both males, mind you. So Living Lightning hits the SJW daily double, Hispanic AND gay.

Return to classic Avengers action, and they have to hit us with Teh Ghey on the very first page, with a character who to my knowledge was never gay before.

Roy was the deal-maker, the wheeler-dealer, the cold, calculating business mind behind the beginnings of the Disney empire. While Walt was dreaming in the studio or at his drawing board, Roy was screwing some inbred yokels out of big chunks of Florida real estate for pennies on the dollar.

Roy's pet name for Walt's first moneymaking creation? "That fucking mouse". (He said it affectionately.)

The way things are going, that fucking mouse is going to one day own us all.

268 Weird, when a kid we seldom spent much time with comics and even less with super hero comics. I suspect this obsession with super heros is a distinctly recent urban and maybe suburban phenomena. As kids, we were always outside playing with other kids. I don't see that happening too much anymore.

270 >>>Yeah I agree. My friends and I have talked about this quite a bit. I've probably whined about it on here too, but the need to put origin stories into superhero movies is really annoying and time consuming. Its like having a third of Dr No be James Bond's background. We need to see Indiana Jones as a little boy learning Greek from his dad in the first movie!

i was annoyed that the Conan reboot featured an Origin Story, as if we needed an explanation as to how a man could be muscular and good with a sword.

Yeah I know, the original Conan movie did that too, but it was just better, and the origin story, unnecessary as it was, was/is a classic.

Also both the original and the reboot featured a lifelong villain who'd killed Conan's parents. Unnecessary. Again, the original pulled it off just because it was good and good movies get away with a lot.

a friend and I always wrap up a movie discussion with that observation: Yeah, you can nitpick good movies for the same stuff you nitpick bad movies for, but you don't, because good movies get away with plotholes and stuff, because they're good, and goodwill papers over a lot of plothole.

In 'Bystanders of the Galaxy' uniquely talented couch potatoes invent the 'improbability' version of the 'impossibility drive' and go back in time to the age of the dinosaurs when one of them steps off the path and kills a butterfly, thus triggering the butterfly effect which causes the galaxy to overheat from all the human activity, and we get a new big bang that wipes out all life and God starts everything all over again.

-Ferdinand and Birdboy, for Hispanics and families... also Coco is still #1

-Beyond Skyline, for dumb SF but less dumb than MouseWars

-Ballad of Lefty Brown, for adult Western fans

Might be worth checking out if anyone is still running The Room / Disaster Artist parties around Denver, too. Possibly.

Anyway, the low-budget studios have some interesting stuff out, for those who care.

These franchise movies mostly suck. But good movies get made. Try Three Billboards, for instance. Or Dunkirk.

The more interesting stuff on TV has been surprises. Places like the Mouse House don't like surprises. So anything they touch will suck.

Netflix has been an interesting game changer. And there will be more streaming services, and I'm already overwhelmed.

I've watched the Bogart version of "The Maltese Falcon" at least 20 times, and even read the original novel twice, and I still don't completely understand the motivation of the femme fatale for walking into Sam Spade's office in the first place. It's a big confusing plot hole that no one ever complains about because the rest of the film is so good.

Interesting bit of trivia:

The Elisha Cook character in The Maltese Falcon is, in the original book, very flamboyantly homosexual, and is having an affair with the Peter Lorre character (if I remember correctly). But in the movie, of course, they removed any reference to that. EXCEPT (here's the interesting part) Bogart refers to Elisha Cook as a "gunsel," an underworld slang term that the audience just assumed must mean "gunslinger" (since Cook's character is an assassin). But in reality, "gunsel" is just 1920s slang for what we would now call a "twink" -- a teenage/young-looking gay boy kept as a receptive "bottom" by an older dominant gay guy. Dashiell Hammett used this slang term in the book, and the director decided he could get away with keeping it in the film, since neither the audience nor the censors would get the reference! And he was right -- the censors didn't notice and let the line stand.

Posted by: JackStraw at December 14, 2017 04:29 PM (/tuJf)

349 Thing is Ace, post-peak Marvel and post-peak Star Wars still make more money than basically anything else outside the Disney umbrella put out.

It's basically a matter of efficiency. Post-peak Marvel means the new Mega-MCU takes 7 years to pay back the deal instead of 5 (or something along those lines, plug in the right numbers as needed).

350 Marvel comics has for some time been imposing a strike against the X-Men and Fantastic Four, in a calculated bid to make those properties less valuable and hence more likely to be sold back to Marvel Studios for exploitation. The Fantastic Four's book got cancelled, and I hear that the X-Men stuff is all recycling old villains and old plots, because Marvel comics doesn't want to create any new characters or new ideas -- any new stuff they debuted in X-Men would go right to Fox

========

I'd think that most of the value of the franchise would be in the fact that Fox owned the rights to the characters. Why wouldn't they just hire their own authors for the movies? By this time I'd expect most of the moviegoers are not comic book fans who would expect the movie to be based on this or that "genuine" Marvel book series.

353 In general, Disney knows how to make entertaining movies and understands its audiences and brands. The leftward tilt will always generate poor performing movies and lower revenues. 357 The Farce Awakens was boring. Thrown in a large bit of SJW, super duper girl is the bestest Jedi ever and it was even worse then add in Justin Trudeau as Darth Vader Jr and it got laughably bad.

Yeah it was pretty terrible, but even worse: it was calculated. Every single character, every scene, every line, carefully calculated for specific effect. Emotional reaction A, cute robot for merchandizing B, grrl power C, minority hero D, etc. It was so obviously manipulative. And that puts aside the absolutely ridiculous parts like a sun-eating weapon that fires a beam so powerful it jumps between solar systems in an instant.

And Disney is the pro when it comes to marketing - that content will be paying them back for decades to come. once a movie has paid back all the production and marketing costs, you get decades of free income via other streams. fan boys gotta fan.

373 I've watched the Bogart version of "The Maltese Falcon" at least 20 times, and even read the original novel twice, and I still don't completely understand the motivation of the femme fatale for walking into Sam Spade's office in the first place. It's a big confusing plot hole that no one ever complains about because the rest of the film is so good.

She needs an ally. She's betrayed and alienated every single other person in the story. Plus, she needs to make sure the partner of the man she killed doesn't find out and turn on her, so she's going to seduce him and be safe. At least that's how I see it.

The film is almost perfect, except for Brigid's casting (wrong girl) and they left out the explanation Sam gives her about why he doesn't believe her (the story of the man who moves to Spokane).

I hear ya, brother. I also had the thought that this story probably began under the dreaded Axel Alonso.
But I'm also not sure the new guy will be much different about such things.

I've disliked Alonso ever since he edited the JMS run on Spider-Man, which was so misguided and god-awful that I actually quit reading Spider-Man for the only time since 1971. It was that bad.

So after ruining Spider-Man, Alonso gets promoted to ruin the entire line. Well done, Marvel!

But the whole SJW crowd is never exactly original in their thinking. It is all about signaling each other that they are with it baby, yeah! ========

As much as it's a shame for such things to be supported, everyone needs to decide for themselves on whether the sacrifice is worth it - I only ask them to keep the following in mind if they decide to keep watching - "Is my enjoyment enough to counterbalance the annoyance caused by the propaganda bullshit? Or am I making myself miserable out of habit, or some false obligation to keep up with trends? Do I have some vain hope that this time the movie will be good, like Charlie Brown thinking Lucy will not pull the football away this time?" If people consciously ask themselves this, it might help a few to honestly quit.

She needed a patsy. Someone to take point in dealing with all of these dangerous characters, because she wasn't strong enough to do so alone. Killing Miles was a calculated way to get Spade to commit, to give him the motivation to go all in. Much like how she lead him by the nose and got him to fall in love with her.

And once Spade got the Falcon for her, she'd shiv him in the liver and disappear.

511 Doesn't FOX own the Alien franchise?

Ridley Scott has basically murdered it with his horrible "Prometheus" and "Prometheus Goes to Paris" movies.

Honestly, who thought that there would ever be a worse Alien movie than "Alien 4: We're European All Over Your Hopes For This Movie".

Disney certainly couldn't do worse....perhaps an all-singing, Alien Princess cartoon.

Posted by: naturalfake at December 14, 2017 04:42 PM

I suspect the Alien series is beyond being salvaged. Ridley Scott has no idea what's he's doing anymore and a good movie would have to write off everything he's done on his 2 latest flicks.

First, if we had sane copyright laws, would Disney have the money to do this? I cannot accept anything they've done as being halfway ethical since they bought Mary Bono and enough of Congress to corrupt our IP laws.

Second, people really give a shit about this comic-book/superhero garbage? I've seen one or two in the past twenty years and the impression they made on me was so profound that I couldn't tell you what they were or who was in them. Disney, Marvel, whoever, none of that crap ever gets me to pay to see any of it.

Comics have become increasingly a vehicle of the left to spew their SJW themes, I am just curious if there is going to any significant backlash against them for doing so.

This credit is different from the dependents you take credit for at the begging of the form too.

582 Vote how? They are no more citizens with voting rights here than they were there are they?

Voting in PR is one thing.
Voting in FL...quite another.

only if they actually register to vote.

I don't think they can. They have to be naturalized like all other foreign nationals (except by act of congress they do not have to swear they have no allegiance to their former citizenship which was also American).

584 More like Valerian and the Joys Sexual Harassment in the Workplace, if you ask me.

Or Valerian and the Female Lead With Whom He Has Zero Chemistry, honestly.

Casting on that flick was awful, which is why I avoided it. A shame.

585 since i avoid 99.999% of all current media "product", and since the merger is taking place more than 10 miles from my house, i don't see this merger affecting me much.

at best, it just changes which company *doesn't* get my entertainment dollars.

I have gained a greater appreciation for the train wreck that is Alien 4 since Scott started doing his prequels things. It has it's charms. I don't consider it a real Alien movie, but, it's ok and it has it's moments.

589 "....the Ultimate universe Spider-man who is half black, half Puerto Rican."
-------------------
What the hell does that even mean?
I guess they mean half black whatever and half white P Rican.
Or maybe they mean Diana Ross and Roberto Clemente had a Spider-kid who was then half African-US-American and half P Rican. But that would make him all black and half P Rican....which might account for his super powers since he would be 150% "diverse."
Okay.

I have no idea what you are trying to say here. Adult citizens get to vote unless they have lost their franchise.
