From the sidebar earlier this week.

Irrepressible commenter Toni (aka Ritabootoo) passed away on Friday, December 8, 2017. Here is a bit more info. RIP. [Update] A memorial service for Ritabootoo, who passed from cancer last week, will be held this Thursday, December 14th at the Wooster Funeral Home in Clementon, New Jersey. 6:30 - 7:30 is visitation followed by a service led by Father Adam at 7:30pm.

An 'ette and friend of Ritabootoo sent me this email and I thought I would share it with the Pet Thread gang.

Ritabootoo's memorial service went beautifully, with 150 mourners showing up, straining the capacity of the funeral home. People were lined up to get in. Father Adam led a touching, soulful and dignified service. Afterward, many repaired to a diner to comfort Toni's husband Bob, and share inspirational stories of Toni's life. The love and care shown to Toni and her family on behalf of AoSHQ and faithful readers has given comfort and solace to everyone who loved her.

If you would like to post the above to the pet thread or anywhere else, please feel free. (Or not.) OI can also go in and post in the comments.
All my best,
Anonymous-9

A Little of This. A Little of That.

The Ace of Spades Pet Thread strives to stay away from politics. I'm not sure if this is political or just f*cking stupid. Vegan diets for dogs at LA animal shelters.

Wow, this dog has a weird appetite.

OK, I'll break the political rule, just this once. Smart dog.

Meet The PetMorons

grammie.jpg

Hi Mis Hum – Grammie here

This is Annie, the best Golden Retriever who ever lived. I took this picture up at our cabin in the U.P. of Michigan. Annie was a dedicated swimmer. It was hard to fish while she was around, because she always followed the boat. Unlike these modern-day posers, Annie really was a certified therapy dog, and worked four days a week in my daughter’s hospital. She learned how to ride the hospital elevators and get off on the right floor, all on her own. She did not care for the 3rd floor Psych ward. She died one week before her 15th birthday. When God made dogs, I’m convinced He had Annie in mind. -Grammiewinger

Just a beautiful photo in so many ways Grammie. Psych ward? I take it she didn't read the ONT on a regular basis. Thank you for the submission.

Hi,
Just a lurker for many years but wanted to share my doggehs. These are Coton de Tulears. The one in the foreground is Romeo and in the back is Ollie, although we misnamed him, should be named Turbo or Whirling Dervish! Both are great dogs and hypoallergenic as they have hair instead of fur. After grooming they are like giant unbelievably soft cotton balls. They rule the place and they know it!
Thanks for the best thread of the week.
Mike

Well Lurker Mike thank you for the kind words. We appreciate your support and the photo of your pups. They look pretty angelic at the moment.

Pooka (on left) is an opinionated, bossy 17 year old torbie who is without a doubt, The Boss of the World. She has allowed Subedai (on right) (and Subie's not pictured brother, Jochi) to join our rag tag family. Really, they are the bosses of our world. Wouldn't have it any other way. BTW, Jochi and Subedai were generals in Gengis Khan' s army. Jochi was also his son. My husband is the brainiac. I am just an old wino lurkerette. (brainiac)

I'm just guessing here but they certainly appear to be mistreated. Blankets and furniture for pets? Who has ever heard of anything like that? In all seriousness, thanks for sharing. Your world seems to be a good one.

Sammy2.jpg

Hello, long-time lurker, rare commenter – don’t know the policy on “office pets,” but since I don’t have one of my own, I figured why not. This is Sammy, the (semi)feral cat who owned the compound I worked at whilst deployed to Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti (USAFRICOM). She had all her shots and was basically allowed the run of the place to keep the pests down. She eventually got used enough to people to sit quietly and let her picture get taken. And everyone and a while, she’d roam outside her territory – hence that pic of her with the AA gun, she was stalking some pigeons when I found her that morning (the pigeons got away).

Don’t know how she is now, but I hope she’s on friendly enough terms with the humans in the compound to sit quietly for photos still!

Regards,
“Where’s my prezzy?”

It speaks volumes that you do not have a pet of your own yet take photos of this "feral cat" and speak so highly of it. Thanks for sharing. And just remember everyone you don't have to be owned by a pet to send us a photo or 2.

GSXR 2.jpg

This is GSXR, pronounced Jixer, an Australian cattle dog. She has been on You Tube fetching a beer from the fridge and closing the fridge after. Her favorite trick is when getting petted, to do a front somersault to get the petting to include a tummy rub.

(nic) Billll

Quite the smart doggeh and a very good trainer. I don't think I would want mine to know how to open the refrigerator. Thanks for sharing with us. Feel free to submit the videos with us.

Tigre and Koushka.jpg

I'm Tigre's owner: the orange tabby cat who's superpower is getting belly
rubs. Here is another pic of Tigre, his brother Koushka, and a pet morons
story.

A couple of years ago Koushka was at the vet's for about a week. Though sweet,
Koushka is an alpha cat. Lighting reflexes, unconscious grace, killer
instincts but only if provoked. While he was gone, Tigre-the-lummox, who when
he tries to get in the cat version of the Karate Kid's crane position
routinely gets his claws caught in the carpet, was gleeful. "Yay! I'm the
alpha cat now!"

Then Koushka came home. So Tigre, with the personality of a clueless
marshmallow and the strength of cotton candy, decided to fight him. Imagine a
bored gorilla flicking a bug of its shoulder. Yeah, that's a good description
of Koushka deflecting Tigre. Over and over again. For months.

Things calmed down after Tigre pretended to surrender but instead bit Koushka
in the b*lls. And Koushka stopped batting him away and put him in his place
(without bloodshed, good kitty.) Now they're best of buddies again. - Safewrite.

Funny, they don't look like trouble makers. Quite the adventure there with those two.

Loki likes Liam1.jpg

*

baby loki lacey.png

I got Loki and her sister Lacey as give-away dogs. My son was in basic training and asked me to get a black one for him when I went to get the 'orange' one for me. (see baby pictures) By the time he was home, I was already attached to Loki. He named her after the Norse god. Loki was 1/2 Lab, 1/2 Golden. She weighed about 85lbs full grown and had a vicious bark.

The "on dog" photo was taken when Liam was 3 and Loki was 7. Liam is now 12 and Loki has passed on. Loki was not raised around kids. She let Liam do 'whatever' and if she got tired of the pestering she just went in bedroom and got in her bed. One of the best dogs ever. As you can see from the 2nd photo, Loki liked Liam before Liam could walk. My name? "Nana"

Quite the cuties! We really appreciate you sending these in.

13 What sweet pets this week.

Last week Tumeric was discussed as golden paste and someone said their dog wouldn't eat it. I don't blame the dog, I put Tumeric in capsules to take myself and give to doggies. Dogs would probably eat the coconut oil voluntarily so putting the spice in the big 00 size capsules would get all the good stuff into the dogs. I wrap 1 or 2 capsules in a quarter slice of american cheese, have never tried pill pockets or mixing peanut butter and flour? (search homemade pill pockets).

16 Pet Thread Ahoy! Woof! Woof!

I think the hunting must be good these days. Frequently, the cats seem utterly uninterested in their kibbles and canned shreds of meatlike stuff.

At least they haven't brought any inside. Lately. That we know of. I did see one cat chewing up something, but there were no traces - I think it might've been a cricket.

Doing their jobs. Good kitties.

17 Yeah. Living here in the Piney Woods of ETexas, where the wildlife is rampant, our cat Ghost is definitely an indoor kitty -- but fully clawed, just in case he gets out accidentally. Frank the dachsie cross isn't allowed outside the fenced part of the yard except on a leash.

18 RIP to Ritabootoo.
Cancer is so terrible, the only blessing is that you do get some time to say goodbyes and maybe put a few things in order.
I have lost several friends recently to heart attack. No notice, no goodbyes, just a quick dash out the door.
It's taught me to always say the nice things to my friends that you should say, but didn't because you thought you would see them again.

21 I visited my mom last month and she has a 4 legged alarm clock that goes off most mornings around 6 am. It's her 16 yo cat, and she wants her breakfast. Drives my mom nuts.

What's funny is up to about a year ago she hardly made a sound, except when she snored then she sounded like a drunken sailor. Her meows sounded like a squeek, or chirp. Maybe it's because her two brothers are gone, but she has found her voice, and oh boy does she use it. She also hates being picked up and will turn into a rabid bobcat when her claws get trimmed. While there I picked her up so my mom could trim them and she deployed a new defensive weapon, she peed on me.

I never thought such a small cat could hold so much pee.

Cats hold a bizarre fascination for it. I finally moved one of the litter boxes up from the basement because Thing Two would befoul the shoes in the closet. Even though he's old, he can get downstairs just fine, he's just lazy. So now, half of the time he'll do it in the litter box, but with his stupid butt hanging over the rim so he leaves a hidden puddle under the box that smells like toxic death. "F you, I was technically in the litter box. I'm retired. I piss where I want".

29 They make cat muzzle masks that you can slip over the cat head, fasten with velcro, that have a hole for the snout. One size fits all.
It helps with the claw trimming.
My cat Dexter will maul you unmercifully unless you put the muzzle mask on him, then he becomes very placid.

34 With the first really cold temps and high winds, Prince the Poodle has discovered the comfort of a doggy sweater. He is now good for another half hour patroling the back yard even while his servant (me) is turning into a block of ice. Apparently the cold brings out different scents to investigate and the breeze carries intriguing hints of the outside world.

There have been increasing reports of coyotes killing pets, so we never leave him alone in the yard. He's worth every shivering second.

35 I don't think dogs would be harmed by vegan diets - their bodies can make taurine unlike cats. Does make me wonder if an LA shelter employee is spotted eating a hamburger during lunch. Are their inmates held to higher ethical standards than they are?

I do like that they've acknowledged the following:
we really need to rethink "the ethics of feeding animals to animals."

Yes, if animal life is sacred, it's not only wrong for humans to eat animals, it's wrong for animals to eat animals as well. So what should be done next, Moby? Should we try to drive all carnivores in the wild extinct so that they can no longer murder innocent herbivores? Doesn't sound good for the ecology.

37 >>>Wow, this dog has a weird appetite.

I think there was a fad a few years ago, done by Britney Spears, the "orange juice and cotton diet". Supposedly you soak cotton in orange juice and swallow it. The cotton stays in your stomach and takes up volume, thus causing you to feel less hungry and helping with weight loss. Sounds easier than swallowing pacifiers.

Most of the day was spent watching the interaction of 2 small kids and Spastic Lab.

They were on, over, under and alongside her continually. Most of this action took place INSIDE her travel crate. All 3 of them at once.

Of all the dogs I've had or associated with, Labs have been the only breed I'd unhesitatingly trust around kids. They simply seem to have such an affinity for them.

Yes, he does. He is a really underrated guitarist. Nobody else ays quite like him. Just saw Dead & Co. in Atlanta and he is still at the top of his game.

71 Grammie: Such a beautiful picture of Annie posed against the autumn trees. I've never had a Golden, but have known several over the years. Years ago, before I started swimming at the Y, I used to walk a particular trail every morning at about the same time. There was a gentleman who walked at the same time with a Golden whose coat was nearly red. She was truly a beautiful dog. It was very sad when he had to put her down when she was only five because she developed an inoperable cancer.

We are keeping our cats in for the winter because I maintain bird feeders, and the birds have attracted hawks, some fairly big. Himself found a pile of feathers in the back yard that was the wrong size and color for the horde of sparrows we feed. We're not sure if it was one of the pigeons that have recently discovered the free food or one of my idiot neighbor's chickens that roam free all day. Come spring and warm weather again, I'll sit outside with the cats. Since they have litterboxes, it's not necessary for them to go outside.

And speaking of litter boxes: Hogmartin, have you tried placing one of the disposable adult bed pads under the box? I use them with all of mine. Also, if you cut a walkway through one of the narrow ends of one of the big plastic storage tub and use it for a litter box, your cat will have a much harder time shooting over the top although he might still hang his butt over the cut edge. My male stands straight up when he pees, but he does it against the uncut back wall. Every couple of days I wipe it down with Nature's Miracle to eliminate the stench of drying, aging pee.

Bless our fur babies, each and every one.

78 Did some AoS people show up at the memorial service? It wasn't terribly far from me, but I didn't go because I didn't know her or her family.

Also because I'm driving a rental car, since mine is in the shop after some numbskull plowed into it while it was parked.

79 I'm waiting for God to pick a kitten for me since we had to put our block's 13 year old 'stray' cat to sleep because of cancer. I miss her running to my car to meet me when I turned into my street. I figure it's time to get one of my own. I always turned downed frequent offers of found kittens so I figure an opportunity should present itself in the near future.

81 have never tried pill pockets or mixing peanut butter and flour?

When I had a dog, it was a mixture of peanut butter and oatmeal that was used for a pill pocket. But he was a Golden Retriever, and likely would have eaten the pill if it had been rubbed with a slice of ham.

82 I tried pill pockets with Kira. It worked a couple of times, but she caught on quickly. She learned to eat the pocket and leave the pill behind.

84 I'm waiting for God to pick a kitten for me

If there is a local cat shelter (preferably no-kill) in your area, give God a little help and ask about their kittens. Shelter kittens have usually been checked for basic good health and are often also given their basic shots and flea protection. Also, be open to the possibility that God may have an adult kitty waiting for you. When I went to adopt my first kitteh, I expected to come home with a kitten-- but the volunteer at the shelter pointed out that it's easier to tell the personality of a full-grown cat, that adult cats don't climb curtains and otherwise tear around the house like kittens, and that they're already litter box trained. I went home with a five-year-old gray tabby that I named Princess, and I had her for ten years. Another thing about adult cats-- they're often grateful to finally have a home of their own. Princess enjoyed ruling her "queendom" in my apartment for all the years I had her, and she welcomed two sister kittehs as companions.

Anyway, good luck with finding just the right kitteh-- and bless you for caring for the "stray" on your block.

I haven't tried anything yet except bringing one of the litter boxes upstairs. It's on vinyl in the kitchen so it's just easy enough to clean that it's almost too much effort to do anything about it... which is probably his goal all along. I do have a rubber textured mat drying downstairs that I could probably put under it though.

89 The american cheese works great for giving pills to dogs. We had one dog who would carefully chew up a bite of hot dog or bit of hamburger etc and proudly spit the pill back out. But the cheese sticks enough that she could not do that but tastes good enough that she was happy to get the pills. Its not too expensive parsing it out like i do, but I did mention the other things I've heard have worked well for others.
