Fusion Collusion: They All Come Tumbling Down

Lee Smith is getting sick and tired of always being right.

The question of why everyone got the same big scoop on the same day--only to find that the story was totally wrong--is a thread that leads to some very interesting places. So let's follow it.

CNN claimed that an email sent to Donald Trump and his campaign officials that linked to WikiLeaks documents was dated Sept. 4, 2016--therefore showing that WikiLeaks, and by implication the Kremlin, had offered the Trump campaign an exclusive preview of damaging Democratic National Committee emails. But in fact, the email was dated Sept. 14--10 days later--and linked to a trove of documents that WikiLeaks had publicly released a day earlier, meaning the big scoop proving Trump’s Russia ties was, in fact, a story about spam.

"Surely anyone who has any minimal concerns about journalistic accuracy," [Glenn] Greenwald continued, "which would presumably include all the people who have spent the last year lamenting Fake News, propaganda, Twitter bots and the like--would demand an accounting as to how a major U.S. media outlet ended up filling so many people's brains with totally false news."

....

This startling unconcern goes back at least as far as that big Washington Post "exclusive" in January about Russia hacking an electrical dam in Vermont--a story that was entirely false. Since then, it's all been downhill.

How many times has the media since promised the smoking gun that will finally and incontrovertibly prove that Donald Trump colluded with Russia to swing the Presidency away from Hillary Clinton? Boom! And then nothing. Poof.

When you repeatedly publish "news" that isn’t true, you’re no longer in the news business. Call it what you like—infotainment, media theater, crowd-sourced onanism, a human be-in—but it’s not "news," because it isn't true.

Read the whole thing. Lee Smith floats the possibility that someone investigating leaks on the House Intelligence Committee themselves put the emails into a suspected leaker's hands -- with an erroneous date -- to flush the leaker out (a scenario I read about in a Tom Clancy book, probably Red Storm Rising -- put some catnip out that a leaker can't help but leak and then you catch your leaker).

I've heard that and thought about it and talked about it with people. The problem, I think, is that an agency providing these emails to Congress cannot alter the date to flush out the leaker, who I'm not saying is Adam Schiff or anything, without being himself guilty of the crime of submitting deliberately false documents to Congress.

Unless there's some special legal exception for this kind of smoke-out-the-leaker operation, which I seriously doubt, because who in Congress would ever vote to approve that?

Nevertheless, the whole piece is worth a read, linking the whole garbage media to FusionGPS and the real shadow government that runs everything.

Basically
it boiled down to forcing all content providers to pay the same hourly

Look at this way, should your neighbor who uses 10,000 gal

15 I'm pretty sure the leak-detection strategy was from Patriot Games. It worked like this - you put out memos with some kind of juicy info that your suspected leaker can't resist. You do this by creating a series of very similar but slightly different memos. Each one is "assigned" to one specific individual who is under suspicion. Whichever ones matches the leaked info exactly pinpoints the individual who leaked.

As I've been saying, there are now over 27 active leak investigations being run by what is likely a joint DOJ/DNI task force that dates back to a summer time announcement by Sessions and Coats that almost nobody paid attention to at the time.

When they made the announcement they specifically talked about Congress as a target of potential leaks.

Here is the press conference where they announced the investigation.

That is exactly what happened. Since the legislation could not pass Congress, Obama directed the FCC to change its categorization of ISPs to telecom instead of information services.

Changing them to be telecom companies put them under the purview of the FCC and it included "common carrier" provisions.

The decision by the FCC today reversed that.

The Conservative Treehouse points to a statement by Sessions about a new counterintelligence unit within the FBI to deal with leaks.

However, few people were paying attention four months ago when Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coates told us they were going to do exactly that:

04:30 "The FBI has created a new counterintelligence unit to manage these [leak] cases"

08:17 "these National Security breaches do not just originate from within the Intelligence Community. They come from a wide range of sources within the government, including the Congress."

https://youtu.be/Da-TtLgXU40

Two days later, Sunday August 6th, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein reiterated he was going to follow through on the investigative demand of AG Sessions and DNI Coates and again referenced a "new counterintelligence division within the FBI".

65 What happened, as best we can tell now - John Podesta used DNC money to pay Fusion to pay Steele to come up with the Dossier. Steele produced a marvelous work of fiction, giving his clients what they wanted, and filling it with juicy but unverifiable stories. (he was also sloppy, and put in quite a few things that were easily refuted, such as the supposed visit of Trump's lawyer to Prague)

Then, Steele colluded with Ohr's wife (who was employed by Fusion at the time) to get this dossier into the American political race, with the sensitive details discussed over the unmonitored Ham Radio connection she had set up. She gave the Dossier to her husband Bruce Ohr in the DOJ, and he gave it both to his superiors and to Strzok and McCabe in the FBI. (and it's likely that Comey was in on this, too) Strzok was then the pointman who took the Dossier to the FISA court, presenting it as "trusted", and using it as an avenue to open a covert investigation into everyone who was part of the Trump Campaign, the hope being that this surveillance would turn up something truly indictable.

And this covert operation, backed by Comey, McCabe, and the Obama DOJ, is now what has become the Mueller investigation.

81 I do believe that Obama feloow is just about all out of legacy.

Not at all. There's still a ton of major damage left from his illegitimate tenure - much of which will never go away. Just the SCOTASS BarkyCare decision established the anti-American nature of the feral judiciary and birthed the insane notion of being "taxed" for non-action, even when Congress stressed that the penalties were not taxes. And we have yet to see the actual cost of his (and the GOP Congress') insane spending and gargantuan debt. The piper must eventually be paid ... and that is going to be really, really ugly.

No ... sadly, Barky's legacy will endure for some time. A very long time.

102 Bruce, Nellie, and Glenn from 2010. A tl/dr.

Both Bruce and Nellie Ohr and also Glenn Simpson also worked together on something called "The Expert Working Group on International Crime." This was in Jan. 2010.

October 2010. The Urainum One deal is done. This kind of deal is one to the things that this "Expert Working Group" was supposed to be concerned with in a panel facilitated by future Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson. Fusion GPS was founded in 2011.

From the "Working Group" program:

Lunch: Legal Racketeering in Russia
Speaker: Thomas Firestone. Resident Legal Advisor U.S. Embassy --- Moscow
National Security Issues
How are international criminal organizations attempting to co-opt the state to suit its interests? How are states attempting to use international criminal organizations to advance their interests? How does international organized crime present itself as a national security threat to different types of countries? How do links to other malevolent actors, like terrorist or insurgent groups, manifest themselves and factor into the previous questions?
Facilitators:
Phil Williams, University of Pittsburgh
Vanda Felbab-Brown, The Brookings Institution
Bruce Ohr, U.S. Department of Justice

Penetration of Economic Sectors and Critical Infrastructures
Are international criminal organizations purchasing business ventures and penetrating financial markets? What investments are international criminal organizations making in critical infrastructures (e.g., rail, pipeline) or strategic materials (e.g., oil, metals)? Can we quantify the harm international organized crime inflicts on these economic sectors? How can we better prevent, deter or detect such interplay between underworld and upperworld?
Facilitators:
Ernesto Savona, Transcrime
Glenn Simpson, International Assessment and Strategy Center
Robert Werner, U.S. Department of the Treasury

Attending the working group:
Bruce Ohr, Chief Organized Crime and Racketeering Section Criminal Division, U.S. Department of Justice, Washington, DC
Nellie Ohr, Researcher, Open Source Works, Washington, DC (CIA)
https://fas.org/blogs/secrecy/2011/12/cia_osw/

106 The most commonly stated purpose for net neutrality is so that the carrier cannot give preferences such as to Netflix over AEBN or the reverse. Or Google Web(?) can't give preference to YouTube over Vimeo; that Google Web can't block Vimeo or deliberately degrade it. That is access is neutral between big and small content providers, outhouse versus in-house content, and good versus bad content. Whether that is what it does is another matter.

178 Ryan patented software that would automatically introduce inconsequential differences in each copy of an email or memo (I don't remember which) so that the leaker could be identified.

IIRC.
Posted by: Grump928(C) at December 14, 2017 01:44 PM (WbIyz)

Yes and no. Ryan described an older technique where they would do just that, shifting the locations of commas and semicolons and such. When the document was leaked, the news at the time (and I remember seeing this via Rather back in the day) would show a photograph of the hard copy of the leaked document and the placement of the punctuation would help them identify which copy was leaked.

At the party, Ryan mentioned that the news media had caught on to this technique and they had to up their game. The new technique was to insert a deliberately inflammatory statement into the summary that the news would likely quote verbatim. The slight changes in wording would identify which copy had been leaked to the press.

I met Clancy a couple times back in high school. He invited a lot of high ranking & interesting people over to his house for lunch and picked their brains for interesting facts about the military, the intelligence community, politics and the defense industry. A lot of these lunchtime conversations ended up in his books. I remember a long discussion with an Admiral about Navy drones one weekend. Fun times.

What innovation is that? Packet switching has changed little in the past 40 years, only processing speeds. The explosion in internet popularity and the services available are fairly recent developments (10-15 years) and never underestimate shareholders demands for ever increasing profits (especially when they are in a monopoly situation).

Again, it's important to understand that NN is not about how much content you're allowed to use, it's about WHAT content you're allowed to use.

yeah ... and the left was slobbering over the potential to use it to bring old-fashioned radio censorship back to the internet.

For those who forget ... many industries that were stagnated and almost killed under the guise of "government regulation for necessary utilities" only came back to life (and prices plummeted) after they were deregulated in the 80s. Barky and his junta did a good job of reversing that process and helped to make electricity prices actually rise along with making the grid brittle and bordering on unreliable.

There's legion success and failure stories, profits and losses, technological adaptation and discovery in that oversimplification of "only processing speeds." What spurred on that massing of human wit, intelligence, risk taking, and organizational management ability? Was it the empty notion of equality or that information should be free? Was it mankind's desires to better his fellow man at his own expense?

It was the fucking dollar.

I first ran into this sort of insane notion when I lived in Israel. There, you have a TV tax. You have to pay a tax for every TV you own - and it wasn't cheap. I had never even imagined such a thing.

That tax helped pay for the 2 channels they had, which pretty much sucked. 2 channels.

Meanwhile, people had jerry-rigged all sorts of ersatz cable systems (running wires out in the street from house to house with some guy running a "channel" by putting tapes in his VCR.

That was a little while ago and when cable finally came to Israel a lot of things changed. I don't know if they still have the TV tax.

294 Everyone should stop worrying. New technologies of content delivery keeps the elves up at night. Plus, the 800 pound gorilla hasn't sincerely entered the arena yet. If current ISP's do too many dumb bundling, metering, and content managing moves, then Amazon will just come in and kick their asses. They have the money, the infrastructure expertise and the foresight to know that the consumer is king. They may even slay Netflix and the other handful of heavy bandwidth users, or at least cripple them, by making such hard deals that they in effect will be subsidizing and offsetting any rate changes that the consumer might face. Capitalism is so cool. This will play out, just as it should, in the market place, not in some Obama vision of fairness.

Good analogy. Why? Because there IS a place where you DO have to pay to
watch TV -- Great Britain. Where to watch TV you must buy a "Television
License" from the government. How did that come about? Well golly gee,
they have a law that is the TV equivalent of Net Neutrality, in which
the government controls all air broadcasts, just as in a socialist
state.

THAT is what happens when the government controls something. It become more expensive and shittier.

300 Let's allow the government to totally control what's on the Internet.

Then, when there's a Republican president, he can outlaw and shut down all liberal sites. Everyone will become so outraged and vote him out of office. Then the next president, a Democrat, will reverse the order and outlaw and banish all conservative sites. And once again everyone will become outraged and vote him out of office. Back and forth, like a pendulum. So entertaining!

309 anyone with a satellite dish for television can also get internet access that way.

we do because the ground based access in our neighborhood, here in the middle of the big shitty, was whittled down to two (2) providers.

Rectum Cable and ATnT, who strangled our DSL connection twice over the course of a few years, to force us onto a more expensive product in their line up.

what's almost funny is that they don't actually offer that service in our area, but they said it was our only choice.

we went with Dish Internet, which is now HughesNet.

RE: Choice of ISP.

I have one choice of ISP because there is only one provider who has a line running to my apartment complex. We're not allowed to have satellite dishes so that's right out.

And I support the repeal of Net Neutrality. I'm not even remotely up to date on the tech and I wouldn't understand the tech aspects even when the puppets are used, but I am given to understand that 5G wireless is getting close to being able to be implemented broad scale and that needs towers, not cables.

(I could also not be understanding that at all so, you know, there's that.)

Also, and I may be misremembering, but doesn't Netflix use Amazon Web Services for at least some of its bandwidth thingywhatsits?

382 When you repeatedly publish "news" that isn't true, you're no longer in the news business. Call it what you like--infotainment, media theater, crowd-sourced onanism, a human be-in -- but it's not "news," because it isn't true.

========

That's a rather shallow, simplistic way of approaching it. The news presents a true philosophy, it presents a system of ethical attitudes that are, in the main, true. And in order to make this compelling and create lasting impressions on our viewers, we must sometimes use details that may not have occurred in this or that instance. I like to think of it as enhanced truth.

I'm disturbed, and aroused.

I find that the idea is more interesting than the execution. Time for a mini rant.

Growing up in the 80s and sneaking bits of my father's pr0n stash from the 70s into the VCR when nobody was home, I noticed that there was this trope about "the mythical sex secrets of the Kama Sutra and Tantric Practices". Okay, I'm good with that. What little video evidence of this was available, I now know to actually have been conceived by sweaty white guys, performed by Americans of Japanese ancestry, and shot on location in Van Nuys, California. And it was fine. It was exotic.

Now with the death of Net Neutrality, I have discovered actual videos of Asians, shot in Asia, with Asian performers. The "ancient mythical sex secrets, born from the Kama Sutra and Tantric Practices" appears to be 1) not shaving your bush, 2) laying flat on your back, 3) placing both hands up near your ears, 4) turning your head to the right, 5) occasionally making a high pitched whine.

Not impressed.

I attended a talk by the CTO of Netflix just before Hurricane Sandy hit. At the time, Netflix uses AWS for the recommendation engine, billing, network health detection and a few other tasks. At any one time, 2/3 of their AWS footprint is running the recommendation engine and the other 1/3 is used for development. Each night, they turn that over to just 1/3 to the RE and the developers get to test their latest code on the massive amounts of data they collect.

The streaming servers themselves are co-located at the ISP.

Prices kept going up on my ISP, no new competitors showed up to offer me alternate deals, I didn't get less throttling from Comcast, they didn't give me the real download speeds that they promised.

All net neutrality did was put he camel's nose under the door to control the internet more and more.

Right, there are always alternatives, even if they really suck. I could get internet over the phone lines here, its just crappy. I could get satellite, its just expensive and unreliable. There are options.

I'd just like to see more direct competition, so I can get high speed cable internet from someone other than Comcast, or at least the option to consider it.

Remember, this whole hail mary Russia thing was really brought to the forefront by Hillary's team the morning after the election according to the book "Shattered" (I think that was the name).

The "insurance policy" texted previously between Sztork his lover, was not so much an insurance policy to defeat Trump - i.e., Hillary win - though it partially was. It was an insurance policy to make sure Trump wasn't elected to uncover this stuff. I.e., the term insurance policy refers them them and not Hillary. They always believed that Hillary would win. But couldn't take any chances. These folks are bureaucrats. There there no matter who wins and if you've been working your whole life for the "state" why would you risk it all for Hillary? You do this by creating a series of very similar but slightly different memos. Each one is "assigned" to one specific individual who is under suspicion. Whichever ones matches the leaked info exactly pinpoints the individual who leaked."

That's what I remember it being from too: the Canary Trap. Each classified document copy is numbered, the person with access signs it out, with that number recorded, and must sign it back in at the end of the day. The report has an abstract with well-written punchy soundbytes, whose adjectives are randomly generated, unique to each numbered report. The catnip was for any press given access, who wouldn't be able to resist cribbing directly, and the unique text thus published revealed which numbered copy--thus which supposedly securely cleared person with sanctioned access--had leaked.
