The Iron Hand
Raoul Hynckes

There are two wildly different versions of this painting. One is dark and foreboding. One is much lighter and airy. I have no idea which is closer to reality. The dark one is three down from the top at this site.

Which one do you like more?

99 According to the site, the painting is has a foreboding feel because it was the 1930s and people were already expecting World War Part II: Electric Boogaloo to begin.

The martial imagery makes sense. A sword has always symbolized power. The National Socialists and Fascists were preaching it. The gauntlet could be seen as an "iron hand", a metaphor for dictatorship and absolute power. Hitler saw himself as a knight in shining armor on a quest to save the damsel Germania (he is a actually depicted in a painting as such here: https://tinyurl.com/ybdkoobw).

105 I definitely prefer this version to the darker one in the link. Like yesterday's painting, there is no doubt about the artist's technical skill. He is able to paint exactly what and how he wants. But my sweet Lord, he needs to lighten up. Death, decay, the means to cause pain and death: no way to go through life, son. Check out the link in the post. This painting is cheery and light hearted compared to his others.

Serious question: is this what sophisticated Europeans (and maybe New Yorkers) think is great art? The level of nihilism and world weariness is alarming.

Jones - 49.92% - 671,151

Moore - 48.38% 650,436

Write wasted vote - 1.69% - 22,780

total vote - 1,344,367

So Moore lost by 20,715, and the write-in wasted votes if they were Republicans caused him to lose.

If you can keep the artwork in it's historical context, then I think it's easier to understand why a work is liked or disliked, and why it becomes "great" or not. The problem with modern theorists is that they don't do that. Everything is judged by today's standards, which is unfair. One cannot understand or appreciate Polykleitos' "Spear Bearer" if it is being judged by AD 2017 standards.

Does anybody think it's "great" ie on the level of a Rembrandt or a Renoir? Nope - but, like buzzion said, perhaps there was something going on in Europe in the 1930's that made the artist feel sort of gloomy.

I don't like a lot of postmodern art, but I don't think art has to be all sunshine and fluffy bunnies and good cheer either. Lots of Old Masters paintings are not.

Years ago, during the holidays, a young couple was making their first attempt at preparing a full turkey dinner with all the trimmings. The young bride wanted everything to be perfect in order to impress her in-laws. Her husband was watching the football game with the father-in-law and went into the kitchen to grab a couple of beers. He was making his way back to the TV room just as his wife was taking the turkey out of the oven. She struggled with the heavy bird and began to lose her tenuous grip. "Help, honey!" she cried. In the split second decision, he held on tight to avoid spilling the beers, only to see the turkey crash to the ground. With dinner in ruins, the young wife fled to her bedroom in tears. Two days later she filed for divorce. This all goes to demonstrate what I've always said,

A hand on the bird is worth two on the Busch.

The artist Gustave Courbet once wrote that an artist can only depict the era in which he lives because he understands it. He should NEVER depict the Past. The times were different and a present artist will always get it wrong. I think a similar idea needs to be applied to art theory. I can judge art from the last 40 years, but I must rely on the opinions of others from the past to properly understand the Past Masters. In my opinion, it is wrong to do otherwise because one's judgements are then based on flawed or erronious premises.

283 I like Bannon, but i think it's time for him to ride off into the sunset and start doing his work behind the scenes, outside of the public eye.

He's just not charismatic in the right way to get politically disengaged people to rally around him.

Posted by: Warai-otoko at December 13, 2017 10:16 AM (hcyUh)

Rep. Steve King was interviewed on Maria B this morning and she asked him about his tweet stating that Bannon had to go.

He said that Bannon looks like a drunk that wandered in off the street and starts spouting off about politics. And that President Trump did the right thing by getting him out of the WH, as Bannon was doing nothing but causing strife and problems between administration officials.

Maria was speechless.

And I have to say I agree with King. I have zero idea why a person who wants to be taken seriously decides to grow a half assed dirty gray beard, wear sloppy shirts and a sport coat that is too small to button over his overhanging belly and then throw out constant charges against other Republicans, especially ones endorsed by the President in an effort to undermine their election.

McConnell supported a sitting Senator, which is what he is supposed to do. Alabama put that Senator there, not McConnell after Session was nominated to the AG position. Bannon decided to drag the Breitbots with him into destroying Strange, despite the fact the guy had voted with Trump's agenda almost 100%. I barely even look at Breitbart anymore because it has moved from being a serious alternative journalism into a kook filled" remove everyone from Congress." Glen Beck wannabe.

All media including Fox railed against Moore. Martha McCallum was pounding Moore hard along with Rove, Marc Thiessen and every guest she had on while to polls were still open. Laura Ingraham was the same.

310 Another thing...

Along with the knight imagery, Hitler associated the Middle Ages with Germany's first Golden Age, the Holy Roman Empire. Gothic was the major art style of the time and many people equated the Gothic to Germany even though it was French in origin. In fact this German association was how it came to be called "Gothic". Along with being an Odinist, Hitler wanted to bring Germany back to its golden age. Hence the "Third" Reich; the first being the Holy Roman Empire.

If the artist here is responding to the rise of the National Socialists (being Dutch, with Germany right next door, why wouldn't he?) this could be another reason for the choice of objects. Traditionally, the objects in Dutch still-lifes have specific meanings. They aren't picked just because they are technically challenging to render. The entire work will, in many cases, have a deeper message.

Why 8:30, do you ask?

I deduce this by noting that the gauntlet still retains the shape of a human hand resting on the edge of the balustrade indicating that it was very recently vacated. It is obvious that Sir Gawain was leaning against the ledge, lost his balance and tumbled backward into the ravine below, leaving the sword and gauntlet perched on the ledge. Therefore, the scene was captured just after knightfall.

____________

The difference is, Trump was running on issues that the Republican Party had told voters to shut up about.

Like immigration and globalism.

Roy Moore' nomination was like "what's the most disgusting thing we can do to show how much we hate McConnell!." It was the same with Christine O'Donnell.

I'm done with "kamikaze" candidates. Going kamikaze is what the Japanese did when the knew the war was lost. We could have had a very conservative Republican in that seat right now.

Even if Moore had won, McConnell would still be Majority Leader.

If anything, this move just strengthened McConnells hand.

Posted by: Maritime at December 13, 2017 10:48 AM (G/kZc)

351 "I'd say there is enough blame to go around. If we were to assign the majority, it would seem like it should be on McConnell who miscalculated and has yet to deliver on a big win for the base (that is a deeper issue of course). "

Posted by: DanMan at December 13, 2017 10:48 AM (XTiHL)

352 And conservatives need to stop going "full retard" in primaries in order to thumb their noses at Republican leadership.

The easiest way to no longer make McConnell Majority Leader is to make Chuck Schumer Majority Leader. At this rate, it won't be long.
Posted by: Maritime at December 13, 2017 10:37 AM (lKmt3)

This.

If you are going to pick an outside, non legislative person to run for office, they need to be accomplished and able to reach the majority of voters in the district. Trump has a resume a mile long of accomplishments which is what helped him. He also always portrayed himself in rallies , etc. as someone you could picture as President, despite the tweets and in your face comments at times.

Moore looked to me like a belligerent asshole who ended up removed from the bench due to his refusal to uphold the law. That is no small matter. I know a lot of people here think just ignoring judges orders, not going through the legal process, etc. is what Trump should do, but the majority of people in the country still want to see the rule of law upheld. Do what our constitution allows to change to law but don't just give it the finger and expect everyone to approve.

And the visual yesterday of him ripping his horse's head around while trying to prove what a man he was trying to keep it from running off while he was doing his asinine schtick of riding to a polling place helped cement that opinion for me.

While the WaPo basically cost Moore the election, the nimrod certainly dug the hole he was in deeper.

I listened to the interview Hannity did with Moore right after the allegations came out and I was stunned by how poorly Moore handled himself. Hannity was certainly not out to get him. He was asking reasonable questions and Moore sounded - during that interview - like he was lying. Now certainly if I was being asked questions about stuff that occurred 40 years ago, I'd contradict myself too, but these were serious charges and you'd think a guy who made it through law school, for God's sake, would be better equipped to handle them.

I don't remember "racism" coming into it until Moore made that comment about how families were together during slavery times. That is how you motivate black Dems to go to the polls. yeah, the Dems play the race card - that doesn't mean you pull the card out and hand it to them.

Then there were other comments - the one about how homosexuality should be illegal, for instance. It's one thing to say you oppose trannies in girls bathrooms or gay marriage. Saying you want to ban homosexuality is quite another.

Those were unforced errors and I'm sure there were others. I'm very sorry he didn't win but that doesn't negate the fact that he was an awful, awful candidate.

That being said, I do think holding the line during the election year was actually well done. Confirming Gorsuch though - that should have been easy. You had a majority and you were replacing Scalia's seat. Had it been a liberal seat, then it would have been a bigger win.

Roy Moore admitted to dating high school aged women with his interview with Hannity when he was in his 30s. That confession is when it was over. So now he's making the case that yes he did engage in dating OTHER girls around that age, but this particular girl was lying about it.

That right there makes him a creep and that's why he lost. I don't give a shit what the "law" says on that and age of consent, going to Swingers parties is also "legal", an over the top Social Conservative engaging in that is sickening and just painted him as a fraud.

457 One thing about Moore's allegations is that they are all from the 'Saturday Night Fever' Era. Lord knows, if people dug into some of the things I did back in my own twenties, it would be all over for me.

Suppose Moore had repudiated his past. There was no getting passed the underage near-rape allegations, but the more credible allegations of pursuing teen girls while in his thirties might have been addressed by a statement of contrition with a statement that he had matured passed that stage and remained loyal to his wife and family.

Are we ever allowed redemption? Or is it always and forever assumed that whatever we were at one point in our lives, that's the person we have to be forever. If no one can ever change, then there is no redemption. Whatever, whoever we were at the lowest point in our lives is the person we are forever.

I don't know that it made Moore "stupid," just past his expiration date politically speaking. Lawrence v. Texas (striking down my home state's homosexual sodomy statute) was decided in 2003. There's a lot of folks - older folks especially - who believed homosexuality should be illegal.

That's not a defense, just context. The country Moore grew up in was a different place.

481 So you think we should take Bill Clinton's side with the Juanita Broderick accusation because we don't have video proof?

No, but I do believe that we should state that Juanita Broderick has accused Bill Clinton of rape, not that Clinton raped her. Remember, I loathe Bill Clinton on a cellular level and have done so since he was governor so it's not like I'm a Clinton apologist. But I do care about the difference between accusations and facts. It is not an established fact that Clinton raped Broaderick. It's just not.

Posted by: Maritime at December 13, 2017 10:59 AM (G/kZc)

I don't believe that the comment in the Hannity interview was a blanket confession but that is just my opinion. As I noted, Moore made a more definitive statement recently denying that he ever did so.

Again, you are fee to feel Moore is a creep and a jerk. You are free to believe the allegations are credible. You are free to believe he is lying about not dating teenagers as an adult. But what you are not free to do is state definitively that the allegations have been proven because they have not nor has Moore confessed to them.

That is the point over which I am obsessing because it's an important point.

And, as I noted, I am point blank trying to prove my own credibility on this by applying that position consistently towards a person for whom I bear no positive will at all.

485 Compared to being under our governmmet killing 10's of millions of black babies, using welfare to split up black families, and high incarceration rates for blacks under a corrupt private prison industrial complex, Moore had a point about black families being better during the times of slavery. Most slaves we're treated like family in the South. Don't buy into the Hollywood and public education they were all raped and beaten.

Our government has them under a worse form of slavery. This was his obvious point if conservatives did not clutch their white pearls and faint on their couch filled with white guilt.

What the Democrats were smart enough to do was say (in essence) Yeah, you like Dancing Mr Six Flags. But, what's he really like in private?

and made the race about that.

And Roy Moore wasn't smart enough to work past that, he thought being Dancing Mr Six Flags was enough.

530 The other slavery comment - this from 2010, I think - was one that the Dems could have jumped all over, but they decided the 14 year old accuser was juicier. This was where Moore had been quoted as saying that all of the Amendments after the first 10 should be erased, and I have heard other so-called conservatives say that as well, thinking they are supporting an "originalist" version of the constitution.

Good God, he had to have known that the 13th amendment says "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime wherof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States."

Seriously, Moore is on record as saying he wanted to get rid of that amendment. I hate that the Democrat won, but Moore would have been an ongoing nightmare.

436 If you asked someone if they dated teens, and they said "no, generally not,"

==

it was one of many things I think, people are not stupid, no matter how many times they hear "she was legal !" and "her momma approved !" gets bandied about

Posted by: runner at December 13, 2017 11:02 AM (iS/NP)

Exactly. Can I ask the moms and dads here what they would have thought if a 30 year old man expressed interest in dating their 16 or 17 year old daughter?

Yes, it was common throughout most of history for older men to marry girls in their teens (Just read "Gone With the Wind.") Remember, throughout most of history those 16 year old girls would have been chaperoned and watched like hawks when they were being courted. Again, recall that in GWTW, Rhett "ruined" a Charleston girl because he took her out for an chaperoned buggy ride. I think that's probably an accurate description of how those things worked back in the day.

My grandfather (born in 1870) married my grandmother (born in 1999) in 1915. One of the products of their union was my dad, who would have chased a 30 year old man down the street with a shotgun if he had turned up on our doorstep wanting to take me to the movies in 1976.

Saying "momma approved" just makes people wonder about that momma.

Posted by: runner at December 13, 2017 11:12 AM (iS/NP)

No , I'm in Michigan. And I recognize the mutual problems with elections that both the states have.

Blue cities with large majorities of minorities whose ancestors moved there for now defunct industries or left wingers due to universities or tech type of companies. Which overrule the thousands of square miles of red voters in the rest of the state.

As I posted last night, Michigan has a Rep Gov, Rep legislature, the majority of the land mass of Michigan votes republican and yet has two Dem Senators.
The Republican party in Michigan has put up pathetically weak Senate candidates for years who get destroyed with little effort in the general election. I'm hoping 2018 is a different year, as we have stronger candidates who are running, no thanks to the party. I mentioned John Jones, who is running and whom I am currently supporting . Amazing resume, conservative, veteran, businessman, MBA, and black. Lots of appeal to a broad spectrum of voters.

I know people from Alabama and Mr. Jen has frequent business trips there. Alabama citizens are not a cohesive group of Honey Boo Boo toothless Bible thumping hillbillies. That's why they voted overwhelmingly for a NY real estate developer whose policies aligned with theirs.

595 Probably the only solution to this mess is to break up the union, but that would be problematic because the looney left areas are not contiguous. We would have to relocate a bunch of libs to get them all together. Perhaps we could cede AZ and NV to CA and move all the NY and IL libs there, then wall off the whole place. They would probably not like it and would raise various objections, which is why we have the Second Amendment. (I used to like AZ, but with two, count 'em, two crazy Commie Senators they are probably a lost cause.) Another alternative would be to send them to Peruvia, but then the Peruvians would raise Cain.
