OK new thread so I'll do this here.
There's this social media thing going around with a picture of a grade school boy and text all about how bad he feels because people pick on him in school. Um, hands up people, who here was not picked on in grade school for something? Anyone? ...anyone? Look I get that it sucks and its no fun and it makes you cry. I understand that's awfully hard to deal with. But I was always weird in school, I knew a lot of weird people. We dealt with it as best we could and learned to handle it by going through it. This is not new, it is not special, and it is not something the whole world needs to chip in on and help, especially not just one kid because social media. Chris Evans doesn't need to drop by an give him a hug. He doesn't need a gofundme campaign. Good lord. Time will tell, but I'm not thinking that neither 1) more "accusers" of Donald Trump, nor 2) blaming Port Authority jihadi on Trump's embassy decision will have much traction with, well, almost anyone.
More interesting is Trump's Saturday video (on his twatter). About criminal aliens and "sanctuaries". I like one little dig, which is probably too subtle for the masses - he says loved ones should not be "separated" by criminal alien depredations, a nice snarky reference to the idiotic compassion-fascists demagoguery about separating families by ...... enforcing laws. BTW, anyone recall the original presidential comms innovation, of which Trump's Saturday videos are the current evolution? Posted by: rhomboid at December 11, 2017 01:23 PM (QDnY+) 72

Ha ha fag you're so tall! Lookit the tall fag!
You're so short, little short weenie! You're so average height, you're just like everyone else, how boring! You're just slightly taller than I am, whatever, stretch, did your dad put you on a rack? It doesn't matter. It simply does not matter who you are or what you look like, some kids are going to make fun of you in school, always, without exception. If they aren't doing it to your face, they're doing it behind your back snickering with other kids. That's part of growing up. Its why when you go through that and someone tries to make fun of you, you just look at them like they're a pathetic child. Because its meaningless to you. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at December 11, 2017 01:20 PM (39g3+) Social media is really bad for society. Not only does it encourage us to self-segregate into our own little bubbles, but it creates this feedback loop where you feel pressured to put up this idealized version of yourself to Show Everyone How Good You're Doing, because everyone else appears to have their shit together too. Which is obviously stupid, because they're just doing the same thing. And this isn't even going into how things like likes or upvotes or reblogs creates intellectual echo chambers. I spent a "cheerful" evening watched NatGeo's series on Nazis.
I thought I was pretty knowledgeable about WWII, but had no idea we had GI's who were prisoners/slave laborers in the Berga concentration camp. They were Jews, of course, because their dog tags identified them as such (letter H for Hebrew on them--for burial purposes in case they were killed). There was also some pretty disturbing, graphic footage of lots of stuff. Nightmare stuff. Posted by: Jane D'oh at December 11, 2017 01:28 PM (ptqGC) 91

Big crash in auto mo bile industry comming. Everyone be very afraid. Same thing with guns. Back when Obama was President everyone was panic buying guns. It doesn't matter. It simply does not matter who you are or what you look like, some kids are going to make fun of you in school, always, without exception. If they aren't doing it to your face, they're doing it behind your back snickering with other kids. That's part of growing up. Um, hands up people, who here was not picked on in grade school for something?
In 9th grade I was being bullied relentlessly by a senior lineman on the football team. One of those guys who came out of the womb with a full beard. Had about 8 inches and 100 pounds on me. Finally one day I he threw me up against a wall and having had enough, I dropped my bookbag, put up my dukes and said "let's go." He promptly broke two of my ribs. But he didn't pick on me ever again, and he took a ton of shit from his friends for picking on a much smaller and younger kid. Even though I lost the fight, I won a rep as a tough guy just for my fearlessness. There were only a few kids in the whole school who could have taken him, so it was win-win for me in the end. Interesting trivia.
To film the Die Hard elevator explosion, McTiernan strapped powerful flash devices from cameras in the area to the wall and fired them off for the sequence of flashes, then superimposed that with a small scale explosion set off on a black background on a miniature of the building. Good article on the point I've been making about bitcoin. https://tinyurl.com/yb298cl8 Bitcoin's original premise was to be an alternative currency. It's now so volatile in price it can no longer act as an effective currency. It's now just a pure speculative vehicle, driven by that most primitive of emotions -- Greed. Methos, I could be wrong, but I'm thinking Reagan's Saturday radio addresses, which (at that time) were an innovation.
Dunno if FDR's fireside chats were on Saturdays - don't think so. Dunno if any of FDR's successors did anything similar (regular, weekly, brief direct communication), but I don't know of any. Perhaps some language geek bait...
Anna Puma's link to "Venus in Furs" says that it's reproduced here in normal type, but was originally published in Frakturschrift. I learned a little of that in high school. It's angular squiggles that run together. Like an N is two anglesquiggles and an M is three anglesquiggles and since everything runs together you might as well be deciphering runes. The nation-of-destination may refuse to allow them to de-plane. A drinks cart and the airplane galley will only feed 140 passengers and 6 crew for about a day. Have them all stand and face the tail ramp. Lower tail ramp. Have C-130 do a 90 degree turn and go vertical. Plane WILL empty out. Posted by: rickb223 at December 11, 2017 01:54 PM (rGtm/) 255

There's a difference between bullying and laughing at the fat kid who can't lift himself two inches up the rope. I'm sure that laughing at the fat kid is now totally unacceptable and will mean detention and parental involvement for the laughers. In the 'old days' the fat kid leaned out, came back, took the test again and actually got somewhat up the rope. Now? He stays fat and dares the others to laugh at him. Because he knows who has his back. I don't see how that's progress. Posted by: Acme Explosives at December 11, 2017 01:54 PM (ajiE5) 257

I did the chiropractor thing for years, ever since I was in high school. I have a degenerative condition but I wanted to keep playing sports and put off surgery as long as possible. Some of them are good, I had one who used to work with the Celtics and Boston Bruins and he was awesome. And I have had some that were flat out quacks. Verrrry simple fix for those countries that do not "accept" their deportees from America. Step #1 suspension of all travel for that country's nationals to the US, suspension of visas, work permits, immigration applications etc. and assess a $1M administrative fee, per refugee, per day. Step #2 freeze all that country's (and its nationals') bank accounts in the US, and freeze all payments and fund transfers to that country from the US and use it to pay the fines that have been generated. Step 3 - let's face it - there wouldn't be a step 3 - as the countries would be begging to take back their nationals after step 1

74 I'd love it if Sarah Huckabee Sanders strode to the press podium, paused, looked around the room, then shouted "I'VE GOT A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH YOU PEOPLE!"
Years and years ago one of the old time Architects in this state (his license number was a single digit) walked into the licensing exam room, looked around and announced that none of the people sitting there were qualified to take the exam, and promptly canceled it. Don't know if all the celebs replying will make his life easier. I think kids are a lot meaner in their teasing in today's rotten, God-less culture. With all the social media apps and whatnot, the bullying can get pretty extensive and very cruel. Also seems the kids watching it happen really enjoy it, too. When I was a kid, I don't think it was as bad - but I went to Catholic school so that kind of behavior wasn't acceptable. We were just bullied by the nuns, not each other. Don't know if already noted above, plus willow territory, but the US has already started action against foreign countries rejecting return (deportation) of their nationals, by suspending visa access to those nationalities. I think 5 countries were involved. Not sure where that stands.
But as mentioned, that is in fact the obvious and likely effective response. As for DACA/appropriations stand-offs, as I said a while ago and some have repeated here, it's a "govt. shut-down theater" match made in heaven. For those seeking restoration of rule of law, that is. And the "trade-off" should be for the entire practical agenda, all of it. Full appropriation for border security, including personnel and operations as well as infrastructure, for the entire foreseen project. Implementing RAISE Act, which ends chain migration and does other important things. Requirement for E-Verify by all employers. Whatever funding and legislative changes are required to expand and streamline the immigration courts as the administration is now seeking, to speed law enforcement (incl. deportations). And, per the comments of many above, make it conditional and phased, with concrete accomplishment of the rule of law provisions PRECEDING each phase of DACA implementation. Can be done. Must be done. I still wonder if Trump isn't spectacularly ill-served by his legislative affairs staff (and by implication senior staff who should have some clue). Having ANOTHER CR drama, at all, is actually a black mark for Trump, aside from being an absolutely indefensible condemnation of Ryan and McConnell. But since you've allowed one to happen, again, and the gods have given you an almost unimaginably perfect combo of leverage and policy/political opportunity, dammit make the most of it. Hallmark's ultimate creation is the Good Witch, originally an annual movie and more recently, a 60-minute series.
Catherine Bell (you may remember her as the hot Marine lawyer sidekick from JAG) is a mysterious outsider who returns to her ancestral small town to sell crystals, mystic herbs and good-luck talismans to the small-minded rubes from a shop called Bell, Book and Candle. It's all vaguely spiritual without ever getting explicitly wiccan or sectarian. Other than Bell, now a still-hot widowed mom, and a town full of smoking-hot successful small businesswomen, there's nothing to recommend this crap. But I love that there's a completely doctrine-free annual winter festival of lights and zero mention of God or Jesus in the entire skein. Its apparently the only Christmas-free spot on the red-and-green network schedule. Posted by: Little Mrs Spellcheck at December 11, 2017 05:28 PM (kbn8Z) 297
