Christopher Wray Refuses to Say if Steele Dossier Was Used to Procure FISA Warrant

Gee I wonder what the answer is.

"If you kicked everybody off of Mueller's team who was anti-Trump, I don't think there'd be anybody left," said Jordan, alleging there is "more" behind Strzok's departure from Mueller's team.

"My hunch is it has something to do with the dossier," he told Wray.

Jordan laid out a scenario in which he said he believes it may have been Strzok who brought the dossier to a FISA court to obtain clearance for surveillance on members of the Trump campaign.

"If you had the FBI working with the Democrats' campaign, taking opposition research and dressing it all up and turning into an intelligence document and taking it to the FISA court so they could spy on the other campaign that is as wrong as it gets," said Jordan.

He said Wray could easily disprove his allegation by releasing the FISA application to Congress. Wray said he could not legally release the information and that an inspector general is looking into the matter.

Rep. DeSantis told Wray he was "walking into a contempt of Congress" by refusing to answer basic questions. Watch the whole vid or skip to 2:00.

Wray continued refusing to answer.

All these folks are using Inspector Generals investigations as cover for not doing their OWN DAMN JOBs.

Its like the whole... we'll appoint a blue ribbon panel, who has no real power... to investigate.

Inspector Generals cannot prosecute... they cannot fire... they cannot subpoena outside entities (only look at internal documents)...

So the FBI IG can ONLY look at the FBI... the DOJ IG can only look at the DOJ...

So who is there to investigate a conspiracy that transcends the borders of various Departments?

IMO this is all Kabuki theatre... to run out the clock while APPEARING to investigate...

61 Forgot to note the subpoena issue. This should also offer another avenue for Congress to ascertain whether the "dossier" was cited in the FISA warrant application.

On the contempt of Congress thing, that actually could get interesting. Since it would be for specific refusals to share info or answer questions, what if Trump then orders that DOJ do all the things demanded? Any refusal to comply would have to be based on a statutory basis - and would not prevent dismissal of those subject to presidential dismissal.

78 "Wray said he could not legally release the information and that an inspector general is looking into the matter."

If true, then I do not want him to release any information until that investigation is completed. They get one shot at doing this right or they get another "guilty as sin; free as a bird" result and I do not want that.

Donald Trump, for all of his tweets, does not actually govern impulsively. Every action he has taken has been backed up by statute and long precedent and he can point you to the legal counsel opinion he received that tells him that what he is doing is proper. Such as firing Comey - he had Rosenstein's report recommending that.

So my bet is that he has carefully told both Sessions and Wray to do this properly following all procedures that are required. To do anything less may gratify your immediate emotional needs, but would just be a complete failure otherwise.

That is the reason senior people in the DOJ and FBI seem to magically be losing their jobs recently and the final report has not been released yet.

What Wray has also said repeatedly today is he can't comment or release information on things that are currently being investigated by the OIG. 107 Wray is answering correctly. If this stuff is all in the hands of the IG, Wray would have nothing to say. Let the IG get his report out. IG is supposed to be non-partisan. If you are suspicious after report comes out that IG is politically motivated to come up with certain result, then come back to Congress.

I also am wondering if people in Congress want to know if THEIR names or their people are being caught up in all of this. I think the answer may be 'yes.' Thus, the desperation to get at any info that may be available to cover their own asses - Dems and Never Trumps alike.

121 We are in a Constitutional crisis.

The FBI has blatantly refused to enforce the law against intentional, not "negligent" but intentional violation of the Espionage Act by Candidate Clinton. It seems that everyone just stops the statute midway, not realizing that the prohibited act is not giving information to the enemy, but mishandling classified information, which was done, by definition INTENTIONALLY (setting up a private server being the definition of an intentional act, to circumvent the normal handling of that information).

And Justice, and the FBI, failed to take any action for obstruction of justice when Mr. Clinton met with Madame AG on the tarmac.

And there has been no prosecution of the Clinton Foundation for obvious bribery and money laundering.

But there has been a fake, phony perjury trap set for Trump "Associates" the basis for which was created by illegal spying on political enemies of the Obama Adminstration, under a fraudulently obtained warrant.

The President should direct that they set up a Task Force of the DOJ, not a "special prosecutor" but the good ol' DOJ to systematically investigate and prosecute these crimes. And, they need to formally prosecute Hillary for (at least): charity fraud, election fraud (including appropriating DNC assets to her campaign in collusion with DWS so as to circumvent the private donor limit), bribery by foreign officials and violating the Espionage Act.

Prosecute Wm Jefferson as well for being an unregistered foreign agent for Russia.

Three fairly recent contempt findings are Eric Holder (2012, currently working for some big name lawyer outfit), Lois Lerner (2014, enjoying her tax paid pension), and Brian Pagliano (2106, Hillary's IT bagman, whereabouts unknown).

Following a contempt citation, the presiding officer of the chamber is instructed to refer the matter to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia;[15] according to the law it is the "duty" of the U.S. Attorney to refer the matter to a grand jury for action.

The FBI has lost its integrity. The DoJ is on its way.

There are surely agents who are honest, trustworthy, and committed. There are too many who aren't, and when it's the leadership that is the most corrupt, the honest ones are irrelevant. They will follow orders.

Now the question is can the FBI be reformed and can a morally bankrupt institution that is the US Congress be the one to repair it?

And I'm unable to see how any OIG activities would be affected by disclosure of any information, of any kind, to appropriate oversight committees of Congress. OIG investigations are just that, they're based on facts, mostly documentary. If the top members of the four most relevant committee on the Hill get a peek at some FISA warrants to see specifically whether the "dossier" was part of them, it will have no impact on any OIG findings or subsequent prosecutions.

As noted above, there may be statutory issues. But interference with OIG investigations does not compute.

I don't inherently trust anyone, including you. But I do look at the evidence and have been following this pretty much since the beginning. What I don't do is keep screaming that nothing is happening when I am watching it happen right before my eyes.

People are starting to fall and information is starting to leak, in other words real results are happening and none of it would have happened without the OIG investigation.

Posted by: JackStraw at December 07, 2017 03:01 PM (/tuJf)

Ok getting serious for a moment. Back when I was a kid, all the washing of the dirty laundry like the Strzok demotion would happen quietly and behind the scenes. Sure you saw and heard bits and pieces in the news, but you really had to read the tea leaves. And, if you read the tea leaves, moves like this would indicate that a house clearing was about to happen, getting dangerous people isolated until such a time the hammer would come. It was a pretty standard play.
The sometime around Bill Clinton, there was a shift to a tone where the same movements would occur and then nothing would happen. Basically the moves done primarily to protect and pay off, most recently things like Kosikin and Lerner. I kinda figured there would be no more of the old. I kinda just gave up thinking that comeuppances would ever be delivered to a Dem.

196 There may be a good reason, or a few: (1) The OIG Report is coming and is supp0sed to be a bombshell. "Independent", it is not by an appointee or potlitical and cannot be claimed as such. That is why the WaPo/NYTimes outed the 'rat hack and lead Fibber Strogjsiklk (sp?). They want to get ahead of the OIG Report. (2) Flynn's anti-leak team is still at work. There will be more "Trumps bank records subpoened" fake news leaks to come which will be traced to black hats and dealt with. (3) as noted, what, if anything, has any of these Congresscritter investigations accomplished? If there are ongoing efforts to find black hats and leakers, why risk those efforts with this Kabuki Theatre?

Time will tell but Wray is a Trump guy, supposedly stand up guy and I would withhold judgment for at least a couple weeks. If this hide the ball was a problem, Trump would be tweeting on it. He is not. Just like he is not attacking Mueller who may very well be a hero in the end.

Hard to know about the scale but yea, I think that's where we are headed and to your earlier point that is why a lot of information is being held until the investigation is done.

Congress has investigative and oversight powers. It does not prosecute people. The reason there is an OIG investigation in the first place was in response to requests from, wait for it, Congress. That is the way the system is supposed to work.

And is not in the least unusual for a prosecutor to hold the information he has until the end of an investigation when he is ready to charge or not. This is an enormously complicated and intricate web of corruption that includes leaks, potential corruption in the request for FISA warrants, potential collusion between the DOJ and the Democrat Party and on and on. There is simply no reason right now other than curiosity for the OIG to turn over information to Congress. They got the investigation going, their next big role is oversight which will happen once the report comes out.

The true parts there are that Trump and Melania went to Moscow. And also that the Obamas slept on a bed there.

295 I don't get it - why is this a big secret? I mean, what law prevents him from disclosing, to congress no less, what evidence was used to procure the FISA warrant? Or at least say, yes the dossier was used, or no it wasn't?

call me crazy - but I am perfectly willing to accept a rational explanation for all of this. Steele had a meeting with Strzok and pushed the dossier. Strozok, being stupid, brought the dossier to the FBI. they used it to get a warrant. Didn't find much. Obama found out they had the taps, and had Susan Powers act to unmask them, then arranged for the information to be passed around as widely as possible. If that is the story, they got played.

The FBI didn't necessarily have to be in collusion with the Clintons. It looks bad, sure. But it could be an innocent error in judgement from someone too ready to believe the worst of Trump. Fine then - now is the time to stop dicking around and fess up. Dicking around makes you look guilty as sin, and may cost you your job, reputation, even jail time.

Strzok is the FBI, and he's been an investigator long enough to know the whole thing was bullshit. Based on what we now know about his political leanings (and intensity of such), it's not difficult to imagine he had a hand in setting the whole thing up.

This is no different than cops who call in an anonymous tip so they can get a warrant to search your house.

Wray is answering correctly. If this stuff is all in the hands of the IG, Wray would have nothing to say.

Where does this idea that an IG investigation results in a lockdown of anything related. If that were the cause maybe the douchebags that were transferred should not have been.

Yeah, the investigators themselves are supposed to keep their cases close to the vest, but the fact that an IG is looking into a "matter" does not invoke an unwritten gag order.

The IG excuse is nothing more than a conceiled 5th plea.
