The Weekend Gun Thread

Beautiful pieces of art.

Do you want a new 1911? Is money no object? If you are that Moron here is the gun for you. The Big Bang Pistol set.

Long before man discovered the metallurgical innovations that ushered in the Iron Age, iron weapons were forged, carved and shaped from crashed iron-meteorite. They were implements unlike anything available here on earth. Mankind’s innate desire for protection leads him to seek out the best in strength, workability, and longevity. Of this storied recounting of the past, a present has emerged and a future is guaranteed. Now, revealed to the world is a modern meteorite weapon – the Cabot Guns’ Big Bang Pistol Set.

Trying to live up to the reputation of a smart military blog.

Rare color gun camera films show AAF fighters engaging Japanese aircraft and targets on the ground near the end of World War II in the Pacific. The film is silent; actual air-cooled .50-caliber machine gun sounds and additional audio were added. Some viewers liked the audio, some muted it, and a few complained about it. We have a hard time figuring out the fuss -- if you want it the way it originally was, simply mute it and enjoy it your way. And we get it that some of you don't like this audio. It was what we had available back when this was produced, but we are looking at other options for future productions. And to answer other questions that crop up -- yes, this is color, and no, they did not always use black-and-white film in gun camera magazines. If you have seen any of this footage elsewhere in black-and-white, that is because after the original was shot in color, it could be used in other black-and-white productions of the era; it was much easier to copy and process black and white than color film. We have noticed this as we research archival film holdings. Some color footage shows up elsewhere in black and white. And yes, this is Pacific footage; no, you don't see German aircraft in here even if you think some of the airframes resemble them. And yes, Japan is verdant and green like this, and AAF P-51s were making ground attacks on Japan proper in the summer of 1945.

24 Yea, gun thread!

I had a pretty darn good day at the range yesterday. Put 49 rounds out of 50 into a single two by two hole at 7 yards. (One 'twitch' flyer). Pretty darn happy about that. And with the Gen 2 Glock 21 I used. The gun just works, may not be ergonomic but...groups don't lie.

The not-so-good was trying out the Walther P-22. Started getting failure to feed errors when trying to shoot double action. Finally had to break the pistol down trying to spot any lubrication or whatever problem might be causing it.

Bleh.

43 Speaking of crime...

Cout Panel Over-Overturns "Making of a Murderer" Trial Dismissal"

https://www.yahoo.com/news/ appeals-court-denies-trial-apos-001007275.html

In other words: Now his conviction will stand. Whoopee! At least in my opinion.

What is the Horde's opinion of this case?

Brief summary of the facts (as unbiased as possible):

Violent criminal Steven Avery lures a female photographer to his auto salvage yard with a phone call asking her to photograph a car. She is never seen again.

A few days later, ehr car is found abandoned near his junkyard. Police then search the yard and find parts from his car scattered around his house, which is located inside the fenced-off junkyard. Then they also find her personal belonging scattered around his house.

They investigate afire pit next to the house where he lives with his 16-year-old nephew, and find her bones and bodily remains burned in the pit.

They arrest him for murder, but he offers up an alibi: I was somewhere else that day, with my nephew! Just ask him! He'll back up my alibi.

So the cops then go to the nephew and ask him to confirm the suspect's alibi. Instead, the nephew confesses that he and his uncle brutally raped, murdered and dismembered her body, then burnt it.

So the cops then bring the nephew in to to station for questioning, on videotape this time. They read him his miranda rights. They bring in his mother, who consents to have him questioned.

During the interview, he confesses a second time, this time in much more detail, voluntarily offering up many details that only the killer could possibly know.

HOWEVER, the cops used a well-known deceptive interrogation technique, in which they lie to him about what they know, and basically try to trick and cojole him into confessing. It works. Key detail: They tried to feed him FALSE information, but in those instances he denied it. He didn't agree to every idea they suggested -- he only agreed to facts known to be true. And then also supplied details of his own.

Then at trial the judge allows the confession to be included as part of the evidence.

He and uncle are convicted, sent to jail -- life with parole.

THEN, lefty activists made a heavily biased "documentary" called "Making of a Murderer" claiming that the confession was coerced. However, the documentary leaves out all the other evidence firmly pointing to their guilt (and also neglects to mention that it'd be basically be IMPOSSIBLE for anyone else to have done it, since her remains were found burned next to their house inside a locked junkyard filled with junkyard dogs etc.).

The mockumentary creates a big outcry on the left, and they get a judge to overturn the conviction based on dubious evidence (coerced confession) being allowed at trial.

And now, to catch you up, a panel of 7 judges reinstated the conviction, ruling 4-3 that the confession was freely given.

Final detail: The boy is really really stupid, er, mentally disabled, I mean "intellectually challenged."

So, what do you think is just?

He almost certainly is factually guilty, and almost certainly would have been convicted even without the tape of the confession being allowed at trial. BUT, was the judge wrong in allowing the confession? Does he deserve a new trial anyway?

57 The P-51D Mustangs were based on Iwo Jima. Initially they were intended to escort B-29s on their daylight bombing missions. Like their European counterparts, once the escort mission was done and the -51s still had fuel then they could do freelance attacks.

There is other color footage out there and not necessarily gun camera either. Some of the earliest was shot aboard USS Hornet before Midway and was used by John Ford to make his VT-8 tribute film for the squadron's families.

Gun cameras triggered when the guns fired. Hence no sound and how the action seems to jump.

I admit I missed the 'documentary'. Closest I came to it was when Lileks mentioned it in one of his podcasts talking about how documentaries manipulate you through the use of music, then he related some of the facts surrounding the case with much more ominous sounding music to make his case.

Seems to me that I have to agree with Mark above, Justice was served. If the young man was emotionally and mentally retarded (and his winner of an uncle probably did not help him much) that is something to be taken into account during sentencing.

I thought the Netflix series was a pretty shitty hit piece on the Manitowoc sheriff's office. We sure didn't hear much from them in many hours of TV, did we?

Having said that, I think their handling of the kid bordered on criminal. It solidified my view of detectives that they don't so much give a shit about getting the truth, as they do getting convictions. The kid's first attorney should be in jail.

I think Avery did it. Too many coincidences. I'm ok with the judges desicion, and I know they'll feel better now that they have my approval.

Finally, if you live in a rural community and you win a big settlement against the sheriff, move the f*ck away. That's not something that gets forgotten.

I usually err on the side of the accused, but presuming the summary you provided is factually correct (I don't know anything about the case), then no, no new trial. If he was aware of his rights and offered up information, tough titty. The police aren't required to tell you the truth. 73 Kimber makes a really good .22LR conversion for their 1911s, and in two sizes, one for the full size frame, and one for the Pro/Compact/Ultra frame. You can usually pick one up for about what you'd pay for a good .22LR semi-auto, and it gives the benefit of cheap practice with a practical defensive firearm. Plus, if you have Minions, it's a good way to get them started. And the conversion is dead simple, simply remove the .45 top end and replace it with the .22LR version.

Watched the video, but he didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know. Since I have a bunch of Blackhawks/Vaqueros in the safe (or scattered around the house) I'm obviously a fan.

88 Just brought home a Ruger AR-556 on sale at Cabelas. A surprise from Mrs. JTB as an early Christmas present. I've never even held an AR-style rifle before so now I have to learn about it. This will be fun!!

Considering my last center fire rifle session was with a 99 year old M1917 in 30-06, this should be interesting. I guess it was time to get a rifle made in this millenium.

I hope she can use it as well. Recoil should be mild and the rear stock can adjust for both of us. My old military surplus bolt actions are too long for her to use comfortably even when I load some gentle cast bullet rounds.

Anyone have experience with these?

121 43 Speaking of crime...

Posted by: zombie at December 10, 2017 07:11 PM (42M22)

IMO, he's as guilty as sin, as is Avery himself.

I watched "Making of a Murderer," and didn't think it made out much of a defense for either of the malefactors.

Avery obviously killed the victim, despite his stupid claim that someone was framing him. If someone wanted to frame him, they'd have merely placed the victim's body in a semi-hidden place (e.g., one of the junked cars) where it would surely be found eventually. Burning her body like that would be counter-productive to framing him. Also, if a third party had been burning her body - something that I presume would take at least an hour, maybe more - he risked having Avery or another resident of the compound show up during the festivities.

Last, since when is being stupid a defense?

(Both Avery and nephew apparently have IQs of about 70. Why they're not in Congress as Dems is a good question.)

I had fixed one other flat last week, so I was expecting two, but found a third one I had forgotten about.

140 Thing about Cabot pistols... not just the Meteorite pair, but anything they make.

They're milled to no greater than 1/1,000,000th in. tolerances to spec., in every dimension.

And the planes and parallels, they're as near to perfectly flat and true as modern aerospace milling machines can produce. Which is, very.

If you ever see a Cabot display at the NRA General Meeting or SHOT show, give 'em a visit.

They'll have a 1911 frame and slide, both bereft of other parts. They'll also have a can of spray degreaser, and new, clean, cotton rags.

De-grease those parts to your hearts content, and then put the slide on the frame and run the slide. You'll swear that it's running on a fine film of light oil, but it's not.

Base price on the cheapest Cabot starts above $3,000. Which is better than the $11k that were the factory's first offerings.

*counts nickels*

Nope, not quite there yet.

As it is, criminals are allowed to go free when evidence is illegitimately obtained, but those responsible are generally not themselves prosecuted either.

Nah. I don't think so.

Think about it: the victim was seen alive at the Avery's residence. The ex would have had to follow her there, then murder her (either there or somewhere else), then burn her body at the Avery's residence (assuming no one was home at the time), all the while hoping that no resident returned while he was doing so, because explaining his presence and a burning body would be kinda awkward.

Both Avery and Dassey are borderline retarded, but then most criminals are, so being stupid is no defense. The average IQ of prison inmates generally is, IIRC, around 80. Which explains why people rob liquor stores for $200 and risk five years in prison, or $40 per year for their trouble.

153 WRT the confession, that was obtained by trickery at best: I think the conviction should be allowed to stand.

By all accounts, it's perfectly legal and ethical to trick someone into confessing, as long as the confession also adduces facts known only to the perpetrator.

My favorite: the cops told a suspect that they had a "truth machine" (aka a photocopier on which they'd placed a piece of paper that said "He's lying").

They asked the clown questions, and having a pretty good idea of what happened, every time he told a porky they punched the "copy" button of the photocopier, which dutifully spat out a piece of paper saying "He's lying."

The suspect broke down and confessed. (Did I mention that most criminals are unspeakably stupid? I believe I did.)

Too elaborate. Occam's Razor, FTW.

Consider: the perp followed her to the Avery's place - where she was seen alive by a third party - then murdered her (or kidnapped her), drove off, burned the body somewhere else, then waited for the ashes to cool enough to scoop them up, and bring them back to the Avery's place again? Please.

Also note: some driving by the Avery's place at the operative time (shortly after the victim had been seen there by a third party) reported a blazing bonfire in progress.

Occam's Razor, comin' and goin'.

Ah but you forget:

California just destroyed ourselves by passing Proposition 47, probably the worst, most ill-conceived state-wide referendum ever passed in any state in the history of the US.

Why?

It essentially DECRIMINALIZES any theft of items valued under $1000. Prop 47 classified "low-value" theft as a mere minor misdemeanor, which gets the perp, caught red-handed, a mere ticket and fine.

As a result, low-value thefts have skyrocketed in various cities around the state, and there is literally NOTHING the police can do about it, since such actions are now no more serious than jaywalking or having an expired parking meter.

I've read several articles claiming that perps all know this, and cite it as the reason to go on a crime spree.

In Berkeley for example, since Prop 47 passed, there has been a crime wave of iPhone thefts, laptop-grabs, and back-pack snatches, and car break-ins. The perps often get caught -- an then let go!!! And literally 45 minutes later they're back at it -- and get caught again -- and GET LET GO AGAIN!!! With mere "citations" each time. This happens on a near daily basis, in other cities too. Police are absolutely powerless, because theft is no longer illegal.

202 140 How exactly are they getting those tolerances?

Posted by: MAxIE at December 10, 2017 08:19 PM (9TR2V)

The way their rep explained it to me in 2013, was that their CNC machining center operates in a constant-measurement mode, with a very precise (nanometer wave?) laser measurement which is accurate to nearly a molecular level.

This constant measurement is fed into the CNC, which also accounts for metal expansion due to heat from being worked, as well as wear to the cutting tool itself. And all of those parameters are calculated with every revolution of the tool head.

They're using state-of-the-art equipment, which was designed for such tolerances for exotic aerospace needs, and which also makes the articulated, zero-leak "joints" for unmanned submerged equipment which works at Marianas Trench depths.

Og, at Neanderpundit, has written several long pieces concerning how these state of the art CNC centers work. It's what he does.

Most of you are familiar with the S&W .380 Bodyguard. Most of you are not familiar with the fact that Og at Neanderpundit is the dude who set up the four CNC centers that produce the slides for said Bodyguards.

Inside the slide of each unit, is a small set of machined "dimples" in a geometric pattern.

That pattern will let Og know exactly from which machine a given slide emerged, which is essential knowledge for quality control purposes.

It's all WAY above my knowledge grade in metalworking. But it is a part of the machinists' world in todays age.

And we shooters...benefit greatly.

Well, even the liberals are rethinking their madness after what happened a couple days ago in Berkeley:

A pair of "20-to-30-year black men wearing hoodies" (according to witnesses) were prowling an upscale Berkeley neighborhood, looking for opportunities to commit some consequence-free robbery on some too-guilty-to-resist Berkeley types, when they spotted a random dude with a backpack, and tried to grab it from him and run. But instead this guy decided he wasn't going to give up without a fight, so he gripped his backpack tightly and wouldn't let go (it probably contained a laptop with the PhD thesis he'd been working on for five years). What did the perps do? They pulled out a gun and shot him. He fell to the sidewalk but STILL refused to give up, and wrapped his arms about the legs of the guy who had grabbed the backpack. So, what did the perps do now? They shot him again. Twice.

Then ran away with his backpack, laughing.

Luckily, the guy miraculously survived. But it goes to prove: When you invite "low-level" crime, it very often escalates to more serious crime.

Duh. Everyone knows that but a liberal.

But now half the liberals in Berkeley are pissing their pants in fear. Maybe Prop. 47 should be put up for a vote again.

In Berkeley for example, since Prop 47 passed, there
has been a crime wave of iPhone thefts, laptop-grabs, and back-pack
snatches, and car break-ins. The perps often get caught -- an then let
go!!! And literally 45 minutes later they're back at it -- and get
caught again -- and GET LET GO AGAIN!!! With mere "citations" each time.
This happens on a near daily basis, in other cities too. Police are
absolutely powerless, because theft is no longer illegal.

Seriously fucked up and inexcusable situation, Patterico's attempted rationalizations aside. They toyed with him and shot him instead of handcuffing him and taking him into custody. Oh, and the shooter, by the way, had "You're Fucked" custom-engraved on the inside of his ejection port cover. He was itching to be Billy Badass and shoot somebody, and his sergeant (assuming that reporting about him being the one yelling the madcap orders at Shaver is true) gave him the cover he needed to do it. If any of us did this in any remotely similar circumstance, and tried to claim self-defense, we'd be laughed out of court. Both those fuckers should be rotting in prison.

236 And as to the stated tolerances, you might write to Cabot and ask 'em about the fact, or the "why".

Their "About Us" page would offer some insight there too, I believe.

And remember, it's +/- 1/1,000,000th to spec. Not "part to part tightness". If the latter were the case, the slightest heating of the parts from firing would seize the mechanism.

"To Spec" means, that if John Moses Browning said that the width of the slide rail is (just making this up for example) "0.015 in.", then Cabot makes it EXACTLY to that dimension, with as little +/- as their equipment is capable.

To me, it seems they're a bunch of former aerospace machinist geeks, just showing off for fun and profit. But mostly, profit.

I've recounted my conversation with their rep, accurately. As have I also reflected accurately upon the like-oiled feel of a Cabot slide and frame which I had personally de-greased, mere seconds before assembling the same.

Thus far, I have encountered no reasons to doubt their claims, and I tend to think that if challenged, they could document and back up their claims.

It'd be some major eggfaceage to 'em, if they turned out to be liars democrats.

Write 'em and see how they respond.

Chicago is an ongoing experiment in Darwinian evolution. The smart ones get out.

In addition, the thugs are not great shots. If we gave marksmanship training to Chicago thugs, I aver there would be less problems in the future.

Democratic policies are also an issue. The politicians in power want to act as slave-owners, rather than fix obvious policy flaws like incentivizing lack of fathers, and destroying standards in schools.

Posted by: NaCly Dog at December 10, 2017 08:46 PM (hyuyC)

240 If you have read Piper's Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen you know the Hostigos musket was a form of wheel-lock that, instead of using a standard key, used a more modern gunlock system to draw back and spin a serrated steel wheel against a chunk of pyrite to make sparks.

There are a lot of problems with the original wheellock, they are bulky and awkward and can be delicate. Truly a wonder of 15th Century technology, but perhaps new designs can be approached.

I decided that I wanted to make a sort of wheellock based on the flint-lock action, where the cock holding a flint is replaced by a serrated wheel, like in a wheellock, and the striker and frizzen are replaced by a pyrite holder and a pan cover.

Anyhow, that is my proposed project. It is now officially bumped above making a non-silenced .45 delisle carbine out of an old Enfield action.

287 The meteorite 1911's are a novelty item, and Cabot depends on them being too expensive to actually be used. You cannot predict the metallurgical specifications of a slab of meteorite. It's chancy enough depending on reputable metal suppliers delivering known quality raw material. You cannot know the alloys, nor the heat treatment endured, nor the possibility of various inclusions or voids. Anyway, as cool as a meteorite 1911 might be, it is a bad idea as a dependable firearm or a product other than an object of art. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

288 For anyone interested in trying long range shooting on a budget. There is one - and only one - low priced scope which will work. It is literally a milspec sniper scope ( it has a national stock number ). The turrets are accurate and repeatable. It has a large amount of travel in the turrets (30 mm tube). It is rated for the recoil of a 50 BMG, waterproof to 10 meters, and the glass is clear. While it is an older design - it is like a DC-3 airplane - a classic that nobody has really done better than. When they were new in the late 1980s to early 1990s time frame they cost over $1000 ( of that era's dollars ) however so many have been made and sold that the manufacturer has recouped all of the original engineering and tooling costs and today they sell for $299.95.

The scope is the SWFA 10 power 42 millimeter diameter objective rear focus SS. It is available in several configurations but I prefer the mil-mil with the mil-quad reticle.

From my # 236:

And remember, it's +/- 1/1,000,000th to spec. Not "part to part tightness". If the latter were the case, the slightest heating of the parts from firing would seize the mechanism.

"To Spec" means, that if John Moses Browning said that the width of the slide rail is (just making this up for example) "0.015 in.", then Cabot makes it EXACTLY to that dimension, with as little +/- as their equipment is capable.

What they're aiming for, is a pistol made EXACTLY to spec. And with perfect planes and parallels in the machining.

So, if spec says that there is SUPPOSED to be a 0.008 gap between the frame and slide, then that gap will be that number EXACTLY, with that very near "zero" +/- factor in the execution.

The 1911 does have such gaps between parts as designed. They're right there in JMB's blueprint thereof. Cabot is not eliminating those gaps. Merely rendering them perfectly to spec.

The Eloi Berzerklyites are grateful when they are not victimized, and understanding and contrite towards the criminal when they are.

If crime starts to pick up in Berzerkely, it won't even occur to them to question their laws. They'll blame Trump for inciting the gangstas into violence, and they will still regard the violence done upon them as understandable. This is the path to extinction for them, and good riddance.

346 Oh, and as for Precision Measuring and Manufacturing.

The chip labs, on the experimental side, are already messing about with etched wire pathways that are only ONE metallic molecule wide.

No, not in mass production, but the measuring and manufacturing know how, exists.

That's a wee bit smaller than a millionth, I'd imagine?

And again, I stated it above. Their measuring device is a laser capable of accuracy at the level of the experimental chip labs. And the laser and machine systems are in a constant, once-per-revolution of the tool head, measure & correct feedback loop, throughout the process.

What amazes ME, more than the laser, is what the hell kind of stepping (or other) motors, acutators and controllers on those CNCs make this stuff possible?

Not just at Cabot. But the microchip world, and anyplace else that machines to those tolerances.

High tech lasers can be calibrated to measure some insanely fine numbers. Feeding those numbers back into the CNC computer? No problem there.

Having those numbers translate into accurate, repeatable and reliable MOTION by the machine?

That's the smoke and mystery to me, right there.

378 Just brought home a Ruger AR-556 on sale at Cabelas.

Sadly, the stupidest thing would be to actually USE a Cabot for a carry gun, or even bedside gun.

Use it in action, and see it disappear into some poorly maintained evidence room, for years, or forever.

And yes, the Cabot guys ARE all former/retired high-precision Aerospace machine guys. This, to them, is like breathing.
