Thursday Night ONT

Crazy week, huh? We even had to spend some time on the blackout blog, and man, that place hasn't be dusted in YEARS. How about we start with some good advice for the holiday season?

That's a woman who has all kinds of courage, Islam demands death for apostates.

Just don't wind up like the guy we opened with, OK?

Hope?

I met a couple of twentysomethings the other day who were bitching about what America has become versus what it used to be. They were talking about the decay in morals, civic pride and work ethic, and how much their generation sucks. It was good to hear. Here's another strong young voice, this time in The Harvard Crimson

100 Years. 100 Million Lives. Think Twice.

Moms

Derek Hunter is the 1-3PM radio host on WBAL here in Baltimore. He's very good, smart, caustic and he does not suffer liberal fools gladly (although he does give them a chance to say their say). When I listen to talk radio, which isn't often these days, I listen to him rather than Rush. Well, his mother passed away this week, and he wrote a very moving eulogy in Townhall. May his mother rest in peace and rise in glory.

Musical Interlude

I thought once of doing a worst, cheesiest, Godawful songs* ONT one time, but I figure y'all don't deserve it.

Yet.

This song would have been on that list, along with Honey and The Christmas Shoes and Drop Kick Me Jesus Through The Goalposts of Life, but not this version. This version is great. I love Hank's “correct-the-lyrics-for-the-times” edit towards the end.

Congress has handed Trump a historic presidential victory

I'm still not a huge Donald Trump fan, but that's mostly because I can see just how much better he could be doing if he could learn to apply just a little strategic thinking and timing to things like his tweets. I am a fan of what he's accomplished so far, imagine if Congress cooperated by doing what they were elected to do instead of obstructing him because he isn't “one of them”. SMH

83 Hello Nightwalking Morons and Ettes!!!

Welcome to the "Wearing the Cat" Holiday Extravaganza!

Starting today through Tuesday, December 4th, both volumes of "Wearing the Cat - The Complete Novel" are FREE for the Kindle on Amazon.

Here are the links:

"Wearing the Cat - The Complete Novel, Volume One"

https://www.amazon.com/Wearing-Cat-Complete-Novel-One/dp/1541270886

"Wearing the Cat - The Complete Novel, Volume Two"

https://www.amazon.com/Wearing-Cat-Complete-Novel-Two/dp/1541016394

"Wearing the Cat" is perfect for holiday reading under the mistletoe, or a great way to relax after a hard day of Dreidel spinning, or the consummate companion for standing naked in the snow covered in caribou blood and entrails as you howl at the moon for Winter Solstice.

And here are the Kirkus Reviews of "Wearing the Cat" for Volume One and Volume Two, if you would like a completely independent viewpoint:

"Wearing the Cat - The Complete Novel, Volume One" review

https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/hd-woodard/wearing-cat1/

"Wearing the Cat - The Complete Novel, Volume Two" review

https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/hd-woodard/wearing-cat/

The review for Volume One is off-target about the latter part of the book because the reviewer couldn't see how things fit together in Volume Two. But, his review of Volume Two seems on target to me, if a bit spoilerish. Anyway, give them a look-see.

and have a laugh on me this Holiday Season.

84 Baby Sister Update

So, Joyce is scheduled to receive the Optune device on Monday, which means having her head shaved tomorrow or Saturday.

From Hubby:

"The insurance company won't cover it but it is on appeal. If they cover it down the line I will get reimbursed but for now I will pay out of pocket. I had to do this because the clinical trial may close before we get insurance approval."

I've been told that the treatment runs ~$21k/month, and it's hoped to extend her life by about 5 months (maybe more - she's actually doing better than anyone had thought).

Also, her two Minnesota friends will be in-town this weekend to help elevate her and lend some moral support.

90 So let me get this straight: Our former Dear Leader. President Ebony and Ivory Tower, y'know, the SCOAMF, had an energy boom from fracking, a transformational technology in mobile communications, record deficit spending AND the FED doing their quantitative easing, and still managed anemic growth if any and multi-decade lows in workforce participation.

And then Trump is elected, releasing animal spirits with Golden Scalp Weasel hair and two scoops of ice cream, starts rolling back regulation and Abracadabra! The economy is smoking like a Saturn V in single digits in the countdown.

Whoever writes the History, we all watched the faculty lounge Socialist fail. He wasn't unlucky, he didn't inherit something that couldn't be fixed and he certainly didn't do the heavy lifting to set Trump up for success. He was flat wrong and he failed. All those kids who can't get jobs watched it happen, and some of them may figure things out because of it.

94 Hello Nightwalking Morons and Ettes!!!

Frankly, I can understand that, as long as the other offenses don't bear directly on the one at bar at the time.

Consider the absurd example that the defendant accused of murder had a shitload of overdue library books. How does that bear on the present charge?

I think it's a case of building a firewall between offenses, so that a possibly flawed conviction for an earlier, unrelated offense doesn't snowball into another conviction.

Now, personally, I don't put any stock in psychology research (most of it is abject bullshit) but the courts take psychologists words very, very seriously and tend to consider psychological research to be right up there with any of the hard sciences.

The courts like to have things both ways (all ways, really). Consistency is not something that our courts care about.

Most "prejudicial" background probably leads to correct conclusions. But the courts are happy to block all prejudicial background information and let the lack of that information lead to more incorrect verdicts. It makes the courts happy. They think it puts them on some sort of higher moral ground. LOL.

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at November 30, 2017 10:33 PM (YqDXo)

========

There's the second commandment, "thou shalt not make graven images". But I think this was only intended as a prohibition against idolatry. Even the ark of the covenant had images of the cherubim on it.

The koran often had false understandings of canonical biblical texts, as if Mo had never read them and only heard altered versions.

For example, there are koranic texts that imply that Jesus did not die on the cross, but appeared so as an optical illusion, or that Christians thought that Mary was a fourth member of the trinity. It wouldn't surprise me if they had a distorted view of the second commandment that caused them to eschew *all* artistic depictions of reality that they hold to. That's just my impression as a hobbyist. BTH would be able to answer this definitively.

Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at November 30, 2017 10:47 PM (/qEW2)

They aren't "false understandings". Mo plagiarized stuff and the perverted it (to fit desert arabs). Then he liked to turn around and call the originals "liars", to explain why his plagiarized versions were different from the originals.

As to Jesus on the cross, my understanding was that the koran claimed that it was someone else - not Jesus who died on the cross.

Sura 4 on the former; sura 5 on the latter. Muslims would say you were right on the former. On the latter they'd say you were blending in two anti-Christian Qur'anic verses into one: Muslims reject the Trinity, and they reject the Christian overpromotion of Mary, but the Qur'an is smart enough to distinguish between the two.

322 I think Q. 4:157 is the most interesting. Taken exactly, Q. 4:157 is about THE JOOOZ. It claims that the Jews were the people who thought they could kill God's King on Earth (Messiah).

But maybe the verse is not really about the Jews; and maybe it's not really about Jesus.

Maybe it's code. Maybe it's about the anti-Umayyad opposition attacking the new Jesus, 'Uthman. Or maybe it's about the anti-Shi'ite oppressors attacking 'Ali, or al-Husayn.

Insomniac,

Three months ago, our beloved daughter, Michelle, took her own life. She didn't think anyone other than her family cared about/loved her. She didn't think that life was worth living anymore. She had just turned 26.

Nobody knew that she was depressed - she hid it from everyone. If we had known, we would have moved Heaven and Earth to get her the help that she needed.

You have been telegraphing for quite a while that you don't think that life is worth living.

PLEASE seek professional help. Please don't put your family and friends through what our family and Michelle's friends are going through now (and will continue to endure for the rest of our lives).

You may not think that anybody cares what happens to you.

WELL, I DO.

I'm willing to bet that a LOT of people care about what happens to you.

If you need someone to talk to, I am always willing to listen. You can contact me at teresa.hamilton.koch at gmail.com.

Please reach out. Life is a wonderful gift, and you matter more than you can possibly know.

405 I don't think of myself as squeamish -- I've worked on sewer jobs, from time to time -- but the single most offensive thing to me about a city is that foul odor of non-functioning sanitation. And almost all big cities have pockets of it, not always in the oldest or most neglected parts of town, either.

Toronto grossed me out, years ago. And Toronto is an above-average town.

EPA has forced a lot of mid-sized cities to build sewage reservoirs, so their former "dual" systems (that were meant to treat all runoff, sanitary and ground-water), wouldn't get overwhelmed in every damn rainstorm and dump raw sewage into waterways. Their founders planned so well that the retarded successors could graft off the sewer-improvement money for close to a century. So those towns all have cesspools, the technical term for it, lurking. They're fairly deep, at least, but one day all the poisons that lurk in that mud will blossom. And the back-venting lets you know they're down there.

Then, whenever there's prosperity, or grant money, they get to excavating "Old Town" or "Underground _______," and start putting restaurants in foundations that the builders meant to have abandoned. So, there are leaky sewer lines above the level of the new development. That just ain't natural.

There are two types of historians, and, two is all the types there are. Some believe that "hinterlands" exist to supply people, crops and raw materials to urban centres. I'm of the other school, that cities are there to supply products and certain services to people living out where people belong. Wm. MacNeill is very old and very wise, but he and I are just never going to see eye to eye on that.

425 The thing about this Steinle verdict is that no matter what else he had to have pulled the trigger all the way back somehow for the gun to have fired. It was a DA/SA Sig P239. It will not fire, due to internal safeties, unless the trigger is pulled all the way. If it was cocked and thus in SA mode the trigger is easier to pull, 4.4 lbs, but still has to be pulled.

They say that after the shot he threw it in the bay and ran. If it discharged from his handling it without it being held like you hold a gun then the recoil would have flung it away. It was a .40 SW which has a snappy recoil especially in a small gun like the P239. He had to have had it in his hand with his finger on the trigger and pulled the trigger.

He may have done it unintentionally if the hammer was cocked, but he did pull that trigger. If I had done it* I'd have been convicted of at least manslaughter. But we have two systems of justice now.

*I wouldn't have because I'm not a murderer, I don't handle guns without checking them to make sure they are unloaded, and even then I never point them at a person or even in the direction of a person unless I need to shoot them for self defense.

========

Oooh boy. I've heard a theory about why this is so:

There's the third commandment: Thou shalt not take the name of the lord in vain.

The theory holds that this originally applied to covenants, or contracts. Ie. it was traditional to swear by YHVH you would do this or that, and if you broke it, you'd be taking the name of the lord in vain.

But eventually, this meaning got lost. Given this, Jews looking at the command, came up with a way to deal with it by simply never saying the lord's proper name, because Jewish theology has a concept of "building a hedge around the Torah". Ie. if there is ambiguity about a command, take extra precautions so that you wouldn't come within distance of breaking it.

So if you never even say the name, you cannot in principle break the command. Better safe than sorry. That's the theory I heard from Robert M. Price, with two PhD's in theology. Take from that what you will.

459 The Hemi Dart is truly automotive greatness, sans refinement, handling, adequate brakes or anything resembling occupant safety, other than a simple lapbelt.

That said, as is said 'bout strong whiskey; "that'll put hair on yer chest!"

Closest to that kind of experience I "enjoyed", was a ride in a Chevelle SS 454. That engine so overpowered the weak unibody, that the driver's side door became loose in it's frame, while the passenger door could only be opened with a stout shoulder slam from within.

And it could not hold a candle to a Hemi Dart.

Interestingly though, today there are several Corvette offerings which exceed 200 mph.

Ford has the awesome GT, but a couple of the Shelby Mustangs are +200 mph rides.

MOPAR has the Hellcat and Demon to achieve those numbers.

And they all have air conditioning, power windows and other amenities, galore. Even the stripped out Demon runs with air conditioning and power windows.

Here's the amazing thing. They're all stable, "safe" (for 200 mph values of the word) and stable cars.

I'd wager than 99% of their drivers really don't possess the skills to drive 'em at those speeds, either.

If I were MOPAR, I'd one up the Demon, and roll out the Dodge Darwin. Except the lawyers wouldn't let me.

479 Aw hell, there was nothing wrong with the Dart's design. With a Slant Six.
They were amusingly over-motored with a 318, pretty damn potent with a 340. I don't even want to sit in that 440.

I tore a 67 Mustang in half with nothing more than a 302. I'm going to just presume there were some gussets and bows that came with that wedgie, because otherwise the thing-like-a-frame wouldn't hold its weight.

For our own amusement, engineer an aluminum block & head Slant Six, forged, shot-peened, balanced crank, forged rods & state of the art pistons. Roller lifters, extra large cooling passages, high volume oil pump, all the goodies.

State of the art EFI & related sensors.

Sequential Dual Turbo Charged, with fat intercooler.

Stick that in a stock LOOKING Dart (with Hotchkiss suspensions, large disc brakes on all corners, reinforced frame & cowl, four row radiator, etc.

I mean, real Granny car, dog-dish hubcaps...(which sit on 2 in. wider 17" painted steel wheels).

Well, knock on wood, I may get a little piece and quiet tonight.

As Uncle Jed was always going to do with Jethro, I had a long talk with my father's doctor -- he had an appointment today. It's getting where you need about 3 months or better just to get to talk to one now.

Anyway, he was having problems sleeping, big time (seems to be night time agitation, actually). Anyway, long talk about his behavior and problems.

She prescribed some new stuff, one being some new fangled sleep drug that was approved in 2015 -- I'd never heard of it. According to what I was reading, it works via a very different mechanism than the others.

With anything new, especially in the elderly, any damn thing can happen. But lo and behold, he went out like a light about 15 to 20 minutes after taking this latest crap, and is in there snoring away. First time in I don't know how long.

So, knock on wood...... Who knows, in 5 minutes he might jump up, completely out of his head, gone wild on the stuff, and I'll to fight to keep him from falling or otherwise killing himself all night long.....

My former boss has one exactly such in his garage in local city which I won't mention here for security's sake. Like many such, it's dashboard bears the signature of one Carrol Shelby.

Moreover. That same former boss also has in his garage, a 2005 Ford GT. One of only TWO in the world with a dashboard, also signed by Carrol Shelby.

Former boss and Mr. Shelby were very close friends, going back well over 50 years, racing together (on different teams) in the legendary Mexican Grand Prix races, and many more, besides.

He is also close friends with Sir Jackie Stewart.

Wrapping it up. I once got a ride up to a relatively sedate 90 mph in the GT. Never got a chance for a ride in the AC/Cobra.

But, I'm still friends with the gent, so there's still a chance.

514 @489 Yeah, pipe-dreams like that are what got me into Studebakers.
I had Rambler Sixes before and after the arrival of fuel injection, and although the total claimable power didn't change much, it became a whole different motor. I guess you'd know, one went to Indy.

I got some sad news today, in that both the regular Bonneville campaigners in Avantis are calling it a day. They started out practically as kids, but still after production had ended, and have soldiered on all these years, both holding various records at different times. But they're not getting any younger, nor are their engineering and support groups, and they say the condition of the salt is more of a challenge every year.

Flying mile and dry lake time runs are great fun because there are all these old classes that can be "exploited" by taking a new look at old parts. Avantis have been run with smaller V-8's than ever came in them, and one ran with a flathead six. Bet AOP knows the guy.

I wouldn't say 'odd'. It happens more than you might think, given the size of the population, but rare as a percentage.

It becomes a compulsion to 'get even' or get revenge, or satisfaction, or justice.

I recognize that same feeling in my own reaction to things, and knowing there is nothing I can do about it makes the feeling all the stronger.

Thinking that you can get revenge is a frightening thing. A guy in my High School burned down the county courthouse building. We never did hear what his reasoning was.

And now with the new Real ID law of 2005 everyone has to prove their citizenship/place of birth. In that courthouse fire, all county records were lost. So I don't see how the county can verify my date and place of birth.

569 Been reading the Wiki on the original Plymouth Valiant.

Seems they engineered the original Slant Six to be made of Iron or Aluminum, from the very beginning. And made and sold a very respectable number of all aluminum Slant Six powerplants.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plymouth_Valiant

There's more in the Wiki. But our mythical "troll" engine already 90% exists, made in the early 1960s.

AoP, Stringer Davis, me and a few others, could build THE MoronMobile!

We'd have to use a 1st generation Valiant body for the platform. Because it's uglier by far, than even the most rusted out Dart.

Have to go with that vintage Metallic Green of whatever color MOPAR called it back then, too.

My neighbor had one of those back in the early '70s.

We called it the Frogmobile.

Can someone just send me a winning Lotto ticket, please?

583 In March 2016, Rojas had fought with his girlfriend when he grabbed a gun, fired it a few times and suggested the day may be his last one, police said. He then took off in a car and began driving erratically.

That’s when the undercover officer who was taking his child to school decided to pull Rojas over on Collins Road near Roosevelt Boulevard, police said. When the officer took his eyes off Rojas momentarily, the 19-year-old began shooting through the windshield of the officer’s car. Three bullets hit the officer, including in the face. His son was not struck.

The officer fired back as Rojas ran away. He then stole a truck and raced back to his neighborhood, barricading himself inside his home after crashing the truck at a neighbor’s house. Rojas was shot after police officers said they saw him through the sliding-glass door pointing a gun at them. Rojas was shot in the torso, leg and hand.

In court the officer, a former Army soldier, called Rojas a coward.

“I will take those bullets instead of a fellow officer and an innocent bystander,” the officer said. “When I brought the fight back to you, you ran like a coward.”

Kevin Rojas was smug in court when the officer called Rojas a coward and said he would have a tough time in prison. The officer then took out a tube of K-Y Jelly, a personal lubricant, and said: “You are going to need a lot of this.”

Nice. My Mortgage agent told a story last year when I was doing the closing on my house and getting to the debt declarations. Someone they had done everything for on the day of the closing came driving up with his brand new truck he just bought. Which you know wouldn't be on that nice big stack of legal paperwork he had to fill out. So went from being ready to have a house to just having his new truck.

So the lesson is, when you're buying a house don't go buying a new truck the week before.

As I pointed out to a former Senate colleague who was in town yesterday, after he expressed his astonishment at the utter passivity and ineffectiveness of the GOP "controlled" Congress so far under Trump, the only single issue I can recall that moved even part of the GOP to immediate, public action or talk thereof was the end of DACA (well, if you don't count the jaw-dropping, nearly instantaneous calls for Moore to drop out of his race).

Tennessee is a Primo job!

Leach is a character. Says what's on his mind, Trump supporter. Hates the press.

On the football end: One of the most creative and innovative offensive minds in college football- Literal genius on the offensive side of the ball. Knows how to recruit and develop quarterbacks for his system. But that system does have severe drawbacks after several years of facing defensive coordinators & adjustments.

I like Leach, but I'm not sure he would flourish in the SEC where pressure defenses and depth wear down offenses (currently)...However, Tennessee is totally different. Big-time program that has big-time backers and can get big-time recruits. Think it would be entertaining and he just might do what Steve Spurrier did at Florida.

Sorry for the bloviating-- I just miss writing on this type subject. Spent many of my younger years working the sporting industry (and a few more recently serving voluntarily)...

I watched an interview with some sort of "known"(?) local lawyer on one of the SF 10:00 o'clock local broadcasts.

Ex Overview: He said that he thought the Prosecution over-charged, as there simply was no evidence to support a Murder 1 charge ... the bullet was deformed, supporting the claim of a ricochet ... ... ...

It sounds, to me, like either someone put pressure on the Prosecutors to go for Murder 1, or they made this choice themselves, with the expectation that the jury could not convict.

I think I mentioned, in the other thread, that if the bullet ricocheted, murder is off the table, unless the perp was a known trick-shot artist on a par with
Annie Oakley. Manslaughter, or criminal negligence causing death would be appropriate, though, one would think.
Seems to me there ought to be a study done, on the subject of over-charging by prosecutors, to see if there is any system to it. Are they over-charging just to be seen as "tough on crime", or is it more sinister in that it isbeing done to allow favored perps to walk free?

641

"... that if the bullet ricocheted, murder is off the table, ..."

I'm inclined to agree ...

... however, bullets don't ricochet like billiard balls. They (this one was fired from a pistol, and is thus mostly lead) deform, and tend to follow the impact surface, but at a slight angle away.

If you're taking cover from gunfire behind a car, there's a good chance that any bullets that fall short and strike the asphalt on the other side will continue under the car ... maybe hitting the underside, maybe hitting your legs or feet.

Thus, it's entirely feasible that he was aiming more or less at Steinle.

However, from a Prosecutor's point-of-view, this is meaningless, and a bad argument. The Prosecutors could likely have made a lesser charge stick, and Zarate would be doing 20 or so years ... waiting for some Federal punishment, then deportation.

Here's what happened: A dozen MS-13 gang members lured a man into a park, stabbed him over 100 times, cut his head off, cut his heart out of his chest, and buried him in a shallow grave. Nice, huh? Right outside the nation's capital.

I realize you don't need a motive to prove a murder, but it can certainly be an investigative tool. What possible motive could he have to murder a woman in the midst of a crowd on a pier? Robbery and attempted rape seem to be unlikely. Sheer terrorism, ala jihadi? In which case, you think he would proudly claim a kill.
Maybe he stole the gun, and was just playing with it, and fired a shot without really intending to fire a shot? Still makes it manslaughter.

Your Jimbo Fisher prompting got me looking deeper. Credible media sourcing says: FSU losing 3 recruits on decommits (verified but context over why is not). That seems to indicate there's legs to Jimbo to A&M.

Every rag/media TX feed was stating it was a done deal to announce Thursday. But, secret meetings & stuff put it off (which is why I stated skepticism- Aggieland always shows the body for proof to rub it in Texas Longhorns faces)... Now the rags are saying Monday on the announcement at College Station with $7.5 Million per & 10 year deal. And they'll be buying out Jimbo's FSU contract cause FSU won't release him right now or they'll owe him Matt Lauer money.

702 81% of foreign-born Hispanics want bigger government . . . and this is why the Democrats want to bring in all the Third Worlders into America. . . . which is exactly the civilization-destroying bet the Democrats have to offer the population; they can't win arguments; they can't win on facts; they can't win on economics; they can't win on ethics; they can't win on tradition; they can't win on the Republic; they can't win against people who want smaller government . . .

705 --On a basic level, why would any top level coach leave FSU for the $EC?

The ACC is a much easier path to the playoff. Sumlin was an ace recruiter; would Jimbo really do much better there?
Posted by: logprof at December 01, 2017 03:33 AM (GsAUU)

Yes, ACC is much 'easier'. But the SEC is still the perceived top-tier conference including to the NFL perception...Sumlin was not the recruiter he was credited with. When you lose numerous backyard recruits - you won't survive with a shit conference record.

Fact is, A&M is actually the best coaching job in Texas. Jimbo does have ties in this state. He would be successful recruiting and that National Title skin-on-the-wall carries big weight. It would be a coup for A&M to land him. But Aggies gotta Aggie- so I'm not sure they can pull it off.

706 Adventures in Crockpottery

I have an old crockpot that has to be at least 32 years old and left behind by/inherited from the ex-wife, a Rival (in that sickly avocado green color, that's how old it is). I'd never used the beast before. But I do enjoy a good pot roast. So today, I finally made a pot roast in the crockpot, using those new-fangled plastic crockpot bags. I used a round rump roast, with a nice fat cap, along with whole potatoes, whole small onions and giant carrot pieces (plus garlic cloves, fresh thyme, black pepper corns, and celery and mustard seeds). It was beyond good. The au jus that resulted thanks to the jarred beef base I used was soooo delicious I wanted to put it in a glass and drink it straight.

While the pot roast came out great, the point of the story is the (now antique?) Rival crockpot which worked as intended all these years later. We sure don't make things like we used to.

Okay. What does that mean?
.
.
.You earn 30 days leave each year in the military but when you start you have -0- days of leave on the books. Most Sailors get some leave after Boot Camp typically a week or two which puts them in a negative leave balance two months after they enlisted.

Once they graduated "A" School they typically get another 10 days or so of leave before reporting to their first duty station which puts them 10-15 days in the hole depending on how long their school was from the get go.

Earning 2.5 days of leave each month means they will have to serve 7-8 months before they get back to a zero balance. In the meantime Holidays come by and everyone wants leave but they can't take leave because Command policy is except in emergencies no one can go into a negative leave balance.

767 'Okay. What does that mean?'

Active Duty military earn 2.5 days of leave per month.

Leave Balance is how much leave you have earned, minus how much leave you have taken so far.

Negative leave balance is when one takes more leave than one currently has earned (Is on the books).
Allowable, as long as one has enough obligated service time left on their enlistment to earn, and make up those negative days.

But, not desirable.
