Ace of Spades Pet Thread

Welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Time to sit back, kick up your feet and enjoy the world of pets.

*****

A Little of This. A Little of That.

Jump around. Can't be at a UW Badger game? Then use the trampoline in the back yard.

I've had pets to the vets for a number of years. Never seen a patient like this.

Not a pet story. But a feel good animal story. Hunters aren't a bad group.

Dammit Dad. Hurry it up.

Mayo jars do not make good hats. Just ask this cat.

Speaking of cats, Are they jerks? h/t ALH

Meet The PetMorons

IMG_3439.jpg

Dear Hoard, here is a picture of Mittens and her pal Pugs. Big Boy could not make the photo shoot as he was sleeping. Mittens is a ‘walk on’. One cold rainy December day she was on our doorstep as we were leaving. I did not tell hubby I had been feeding her for a week to let her know she was welcome to live with us.
She says she photographs best in daylight when Mom has not been drinking out of her favorite glass with the coon skin cap. She follows on all of our walks as long Pugs is with us. - Lurker annieb

Wine? Coonskin cap? Tell us moar. Looks like the kids get along quite well. Thanks for lurking and jump in. The water is fine.

I go by Serous451AD.

Ajax has been graciously shown on the pet thread before. I love this photo though. It was taken the day of the eclipse , outside my apartment. He had no idea what I was doing staring up at the sky, but the eager, happy look on his face was priceless.

Thanks for the pet thread.

You and Ajax are welcome. He's a cutie.

Anyone who truly loves cats, knows they need to be laughed at. They are warm and snuggly, they purr and cuddle, they also drive you crazy.

This is Twitchy, named for her temperament. Our other cat won't move if you shove your cold toes under his body, she'll flee in terror if you turn your head nearby.

She is not overweight, but maybe her head is a bit too small for her body. It has become a running gag to make fun of her pudgy appearance (I assume she couldn't care less), or her stress eating. She'll push our male cat away from the food. Of course, she's probably responsible for the dip in nuisance rodent population as a parade of dead mice and shrews didn't start until she arrived.

In this picture she came and lay on my daughter's schoolwork displaying her glorious bulginess and her twitchiness. -Ruth

It appears that your cat is very much abused. It's a good thing we can't track you down. Thanks for the submission.

lena118.jpg

Thought I'd send a recent Lena shot. We lost our beautiful Jakob to cancer back in May, and Lena has adjusted to being the 'only dog' very well. As a matter of fact, she seems to enjoy it. All the attention, all the time. She's a hoot, and has helped heal our broken hearts over Jacob's death. Elizabeth (lizabtha@the HQ)

So sorry to hear of your loss. We are glad to hear that life is returning to normal. Quite the pose there by Lena. All you need is an Ole.

IMG_0957.jpg

Thought I’d share my recent pet-sitting adventure. I have shared my two babies previously (Maddie and Chloe shown on the left), but our first-time house guests for the weekend were much bigger...Kal-El (middle) and Lexie(right).....over 175# combined. They belong to my adopted son’s family who had to attend a funeral. We all had a great time playing and napping...only hard time was at feeding time..it kinda was a circus getting them to eat their own food and not bully others... lol. I really enjoy the pet thread, but was surprised no one sent in Halloween costumes. I might have to send ours in to start a trend. Thanks so much!! MrsTxEngr

I bet feeding time was a challenge.

Longtime lurker, maybe once or twice poster, but have forgotten my name...
These are Merv the Cat and Dot the Dog. Merv is 10, Dot is 8. The Doots is our third Lab, and the best combo of traits of Elvis and Beebs, who preceded her, though no relation. Merv succeeded Lucky who lived to 17. Merv is a purrer extraordinaire. Both are rescues. We love them and our grandbabes do, too.

Love the thread.
Kim

Thanks so much Kim, we appreciate your kind words. Great looking pets. Wonder if they chase each other around when you're not around?

Fluffy is the orange, gorgeous, and, what's the word kids use now...oh, yeah, "thick", kitty on the concrete.

The second pic captures her daughters, Lulu (bobtailed like mama) and Ruby. Their no-account daddy is a tiger-striped, long-tailed rascal, who doesn't pay child support, or even drop off a squirrel for the holidays, the sorry bastard.

Keep up the good work! I'm "eastofsuez", long time fan of this site.

Well eastofsuez that's quite the family of kitty-kats you have there. Thanks for taking the time to submit the photos and story.

My three jamokes....

Hailey, the black/lab hound mix my daughter got from a rescue while she was in college. When she graduated, she moved to a small apt. So we got Hailey. She hates cats...and moles...and rabbits. And the latter two she's brought us on several occasions. Thankfully, no cats!

Bruiser is the Yorkie...he runs the show. He belonged to my niece and when they were transferred to Ft. Leonard Wood, they could only have two pets...so we got Bruiser. He gives Beau trouble all.the.time.

Beau, the black pit, was my in-laws dog and our newest addition. When my FIL died and my MIL moved to a smaller place, she could also only have two pets. So we got Beau. (there's a theme here, huh?) He's a goofy, sensitive dog that lives to fetch a ball. He'd do it til he collapsed if you let him.

They were all plotting against me in this pic.

Tami

Thanks for taking the time to submit this photo Tami. A theme? Is it only 4 legged animals you take in or do you take in the 2 legged ones as well? Asking for a friend.

Thanks guys and gals 'rons & 'ettes. What a great group of pets this week. Lots of love on display.

If you would like to share something with us, please send us your nic name, your pet's name and any other interesting information. You can also send in tips, stories and the photos to us at petmorons at gmail dot com.

Thanks and have a great week!!!

--My parents had a cat named Cinnamon as well --a he!

He was big and athletic with some obvious Siamese lines, but also as affectionate as any dog we had. Even if he was resting, he *loved* peek-a-boo: show yourself to him around a corner, and he'd get up and run at you. I miss that fuzzy old tomcat.

18 Gorgeous group of pets this week! As ever, Moron taste in kittehs and doggehs is top-notch. I approve.

Also, I suspect my cat Pippin would take exception to the top picture. He's currently cuddled up against my shoulder and purring his head off. But then, I've always suspected that Maine Coons are just dogs in cat disguise ...

20 Great looking pets!

There were couple of posts regarding the motorized fountain type water dishes in last week's PT but the thread was as bereft of life as a certain parrot by the time I got to it. It's true that they can have cleanliness problems as shipped. But, by replacing their next-to-worthless charcoal filters with a strip of aquarium filter padding, I've found they'll stay far cleaner. Plus, the cats seem to enjoy the bubbling action. See this guy's Amazon review for some ideas:

21 From the sidebar article saying that dogs are smarter than cats:

The article said that humans have 16 billion neurons. Is that an average among all humans? There are vast differences in IQ between individual humans. Do people with high IQs have more neurons than people with low IQs? The article didn't say.

It also says that a golden retriever has 627 million neurons, while a "small dog/mutt" has 429 million. I've never owned either, but goldens are widely regarded as doofuses while poodles are considered to be very intelligent.

I was totally not forced to type this by my feline overlord.

The rag football journolisters were stating Sumlin might be considered at FSU (not to worry that's bullshit- just had to throw it out there for you).

40 Re: Lena. It was the first cold morning, early light, she's like....why'd ya make me leave the fire. She loves her comforts, and is a fine lady. Having just one dog is a new experience for us, but there are some upsides, esp involving picking up poop and dog hair. Do miss our Jake still, but not with that awful early grief. Now we smile about him more than we mourn.

42 Awwww. Love all the pet morons! Kids ask every Saturday when the Pet
Thread is up. They're agitating for another pet after we had to put our
dog to sleep last year. I'd love another dog, but feel like we need
something lower maintenance due to our crazy schedules. Maybe a cat. I'd get birds, but Hoplite Husband isn't a fan.

Speaking
of birds, for those who are fond of poultry (no, not THAT way), there's
a interesting documentary on Amazon Prime (produced for CMT), called "Chicken
People." Basically, a real-life "Best in Show" about people who breed and
exhibit exotic chickens.

44 Another fine group of Moronimals.

We helped an emergency vet make another boat payment on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Much to everyone's horror, our Lacy dog Tex ate a fishhook because it had a piece of ham on it. Whelp, shit, dump out the Bloody Mary and drive into town. Fortunately the whole diversion only took a couple of hours and the vet was able to put him under and get the hook out of his throat. His new nickname is Fishbait, but he hasn't learned it yet. I have to admit it's really our fault for not keeping a better eye on idiot dog.

Posted by: stace at December 02, 2017 03:34 PM (6HFDU)

45 So, my cat was having itching/ licking problems, and I told my vet. She suggested fish oil, and wasn't particularly worried about it. The spot indicates that it's probably some sort of seasonal allergy.

Well a few weeks go, someone suggested a 50/50 apple cider vinegar mix on the spot. I'd read about that elsewhere as well.

And... it's gradually working. Putting it on once a day. The cat doesn't like it, but is tolerant. She's not a pick me up and carry me around cat, she's a curl up next to you and purr cat.

Win: cheap home solution
Lose: expensive jar of manuka honey lotion for pets

I don't get why liberals can't be satisfied with this type of immigrant, that nobody would object to. They seem almost desperate to seek out immigrants who kill, drive drunk, commit terrorist attacks, join gangs, etc.

116 Woke up (late) this morning, to the sound of the two guy cats quarreling. Kicked them both out the door.

Came out of the bathroom to the sound of the two gal cats quarreling, which is unusual. Kicked them both out the door.

One of the guy cats peed on a curtain over a cat bed, which is weird. They've all been fussing more lately, but especially the guys.

The younger guy, Charlie, usually a mellow yellow fellow, has been stalking and jumping the others lately, but especially the other boy.

Milady reminded me that the older, gray guy, Spark, used to do that when he was young, going after the aging Zeus. (I hadn't even remembered that Spark knew Zeus, who was one of our original seven cats born in 1995. Lots of critters since then.)

Could be cabin fever, what with being inside more in cooler weather, but I wonder if there's territorial and dominance games going on here, in the absence of the ol' top dog Gimli.

Those always get you. A few months ago, I got home at around 4am, and let Ajax out back- like I always did. He usually would do his business and then come back to the door while I puttered in the kitchen. Well that night he did not come back to the door. After about 15 mins I got suspicious and looked outside- and someone had opened the back gate.

Crap. So I ran up stairs, got his leash and my coat and went to the front door to start looking, my mind racing, trying to figure out how far he could have gotten in 15 mins (he is fast- Montana was my best guess.)

I throw open the door... and there is Ajax looking at me like "Hey, Boss. Where we going?"

170 Steve and Cold Bear: Yikes. Four cats?

We've been down to four for several years now. Least we've ever had. Don't want to think about most.

It is odd how cats don't like other cats, though...

Generally, our cats have all got along with one another, even playing nicely, which is why this recent behavior is unusual. I hope we get past it.

I've told the story at least once here about the adult male cat that adopted us at an Illinois truck stop. I wasn't going to take him, but when he offered $15, well, how could I turn him down!

Of course he was named "Buck."

rickl brings up a good point here, and on the previous thread: the number of neurons does not necessarily equate to a high IQ. Therefore the only way to assess intelligence is to actually test it, and not count neurons, until we can figure out a precise way of how to relate the structure of the brain to intelligence.

And I think cats are too intelligent to gamble. Only losers gamble and play lotto (tax on stupid people). Cats manipulate things so that there is no chance of things going awry.

I keep wondering, when will a police officer lose it? There was a case in Britain where a Muslim decapitated an Englishman in broad daylight simply because he was wearing a British military uniform. He was sentenced to life and had to be restrained because of violent behavior. I wondered, why didn't any Brit policemen just lose it and shoot him in the head instead of restraining him? Same with this asshole. Will some police officer lose it and just kill him? When you realize the rule of law is dead, I can imagine it would drive some to extreme measures.

207 Brian Ross so much wanted it to have happened with Candidate Trump, not President-elect Trump.

But Obama had only started humping the Russians Hacked the Election meme after the shock outcome of election day. The real October Surprise was actually Pussygate, which was meant to leave Trump a smoldering corpse.

So Obama had to do something to make the Russian meme look real, so he expelled Russian diplomats and seized two Russian facilities in retaliation for something Obama knew hadn't happened. The Russian meme was also necessary cover for Obama's people "wiretapping" the Trump campaign during the election.

As a final FU to Israel, Obama also had Samantha Power abstain instead of vetoing, letting an anti-Israel resolution get passed by the UN.

It's these two things that either Jared or Trump told Flynn to talk to the Russian Ambassador about. And somehow this is the Big Illegality of the 2016 election.

But the funny thing is that they ARE bright. Very.
Goldens as a breed rank super-high in canine intelligence tests, along with German Shepherds, border collies, and shelties.
Labs are smart too, though usually not quite as tractable.

225 Relevant to the Pet Thread: just got in the door from a trip to town. Checked the mail, got groceries, had a couple of beers in the bar, and watched some hockey, got a bottle of rum at the liquor store.

Driving home, cross the highway, get on the gravel road, and see the tail lights of a vehicle about a half-mile ahead. Dark, you know, full dark. But scarcely surprising to see another vehicle. Lots of other people use this road to get to town. But I'm closing on it rather fast, considering I'm doing less than the speed limit (50 mph on the grid roads). Again, no big deal; plenty of reasons for people to drive slow on the gravel. Suddenly, out of nowhere, there in my headlights is the back end of a dog, barrel-assing up the road as fast as his legs will carry him. I jerked the wheel to the left, and barely avoided running it down. By this time, the vehicle up ahead had come to a full stop, and I stopped beside it, and then pulled ahead and parked ahead of it, as I saw lights approaching fast in the rear-view mirrors.
I get out and walk back, and the 20-something woman is just slamming the back gate of her minivan. A pickup roars past us, doing the speed limit, at least. "That your dog?" "Yeah." "You know I nearly ran over it; it's mostly black, and next to invisible." "Sorry." "You know it's not a good idea to run your dog on a road at night, eh?" "Sorry." "Could have been me, could have been him (pointing at the fast-receding pickup)." "Sorry."
