The Morning Rant: J.V. Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

You know the guy who brings me food? I don't throw poo at him. I may be a chimp, but I'm not stupid. So why does the Left despise the very society that has allowed it to flourish? That seems stupid, and I will definitely throw poo at them.

This is a long and interesting refutation of the Left's intellectual underpinnings.
The Unified Field Theory of Madness
It is well titled, because let's face it, starting with their God -- Marx -- the logic behind Leftism is laughably, pathetically flawed.

Do not be deceived: Leftism is an enigma. We need a theorem that explains not one or two aspects of Leftism, but all their traits.

The theory must explain, first, the honest decency of the modern liberals combined with their astonishing indifference, nay, hostility to facts, common sense, and evidence; second, it must explain their high self-esteem (or, to be blunt, their pathological narcissism) combined not merely with an utter lack of accomplishment, but with their utter devotion to destructiveness, a yearning to ruin everything they touch; third, it must explain their sanctimoniousness combined with their applause, praise, support, and tireless efforts to spread all perversions (especially sexual), moral decay, vulgarity, and every form of desecration; fourth, their pretense of intellectual superiority combined with their notorious mental fecklessness; fifth, it must explain both their violence and their pacifism; sixth, the theory must explain why they hate the very things they should love most; seventh, the theory must explain why they are incapable of comprehending an honest disagreement or any honorable foe.

And, while we are at it, if we could also explain why the Rich, who are routinely vilified by the Left number among its most ardent supporters, or the secular Jews, our theory would be very potent in its explanatory power.

Just spend a little time with the Labor Theory Of Value and you will discover how positively nutty and stupid Karl Marx was. Adam Smith was a fan of the labor theory, but Marx twisted it to his own ends; reducing it to the point of absurdity. It is one thing to suggest that objects that require equal amounts of labor should trade at the same value, but it is an altogether different thing to assume that additional labor will add additional value. That's just...stupid! There are many flaws in the argument, and it is instructive to bat a leftist around using any number of the rational counter-arguments that anyone with any observational and intellectual power can create.

Training Young Boys To Rape Via Fairy Tales

Mother demands her son's school take Sleeping Beauty off the curriculum because the princess doesn't give consent to be kissed and woken up by prince

There are so many things to say about this SJW harpy, but I think the saddest part of this whole story is the little boy whose mother is too busy tilting at Judeo-Christian windmills to raise her own son.

50 I blame it going back to Rousseau's belief in "appropriateness" based on perceived outcome justifying any action no matter how vile and repressive, and John Stewart Mill's perversion of "freedom" into freeing individuals from societal constraints with the final goal of destroying those elements of society he knew little of disapproved of.

Now, Smith had that view of the producers and the cost of production as setting prices, as if goods were valued by the amount of sweat put into them, but he never could get around the problem that if you were to make very expensive things at great cost, no one actually will pay you anything for it if they don't want time, and things that have no effort in them can be very valuable if they are desired by enough people. He also held the idea that all trades were equal exchanges of value, which is tosh. Marx saw that bit was tosh but considered it to be an ideal not reached due to repression inherent in the economic system.

It was Menger (and others) who developed the idea of marginal utility - that is that certain things are more useful to some people depending on supply, what it can be used for, and how useful it might be to other people.
This developed to the understanding that although you wouldn't probably trade your coffee pot for 15 pounds of coffee since the coffee is pretty worthless without a coffee pot, if you have two coffee pots, you might likely trade the second, identical pot for 15 pounds of coffee or possibly even less.
This is not because the value of the identical coffee pots is different, but because the value of a spare coffee pot may be less to YOU, and it is probably worth less to you than the value of that sweet coffee - (and greater to the person with lots of coffee and no pot).

The understanding from this is that ALL exchanges are doubly inequal, all parties in free exchange are giving things they value less for things they value more.

Marx strives to end inequality in all things, but the truth is that all things are inequal, as are all needs, all individuals, and all methods to satisfy those individuals' needs.

Then of course we need to look at that touching Socialist belief that majorities give valid authority over minorities.

74 I think leftism or progressivism or whatever you want to call it has a spiritual root. It is the fear of judgment, and therefore a revolt against any standard against which a person may be judged.

Therefore a revolt against the tyranny of virtue over vice.
A revolt against the tyranny of faith over unbelief.
A revolt against the tyranny of the natural over the unnatural.
A revolt against the tyranny of the normal over the abnormal.
And a revolt against the tyranny of the functional over the dysfunction, etc.

Hence an inevitable favour in the left and protectiveness toward vice, unbelief, the unnatural, the abnormal and the dysfunctional.

It is significant that it seems to occur only in societies with a Judeo Christian tradition. There is no Leftism in China as we know it here. Or in Islam or in India or in most of Africa. The fear of judgment seems to be specifically a fear of the Christian God.

75 The labor theory of value is risibly puerile. I've asked adherents of it whether a pothole filled with teaspoons of asphalt has more value than one filled with a skiploader.

Crickets.

Value resides in the opinion of the market, and at a given time and given circumstances. Contra the Reds, nothing has a fixed, immutable value ("a fair price/wage etc." See also "gouging."). What's a glass of water worth? If you're dying of thirst in the desert, it's worth everything you've got; if you're drowning in a fresh water lake, the same glass of water has a negative value.

Surely this is obvious.

87 69 I think the chimp thread is the right place for me to ask this. The Empress sent me a Glossary of Cartographic Terms, because of course that's what people do.

There's an entry that I can't reconcile with my understanding of the universe:

Metonic cycle

Period of 235 lunations or about 19 years. devised by Meton, an Athenian astronomer (5th century B.C.) for the purpose of obtaining a period at the end of which the phases of the moon recur in the same order and on the same days as in the preceding cycle.

In the same order? In my lifetime the moon phases have always gone full, waning gibbous, half, waning crescent, new, waxing crescent, half, waxing gibbous, full.

Why would the glossary include the phrase "in the same order"?

Interesting comment.

IMHO, it's culturally based in terms of shame vs. guilt.

Shame is public; guilt is private. External vs. internal.

Judeo Christian society are guilt based, while many others, most notably Islam, are shame based.

Note that for the most part, shame based cultures (which are not Judeo Christian) are the ones that have no Leftism.

This is one of the most basic refutations of Marx.

And what is fascinating is that the history of the labor movement will show 100% acceptance of this point. Samuel Gompers wanted "more", and his argument in many cases was that workers were getting better and more efficient, and therefore deserved...were owed!...more benefits.

It is to raise men as gentlemen in a culture of virtue and ethics. But they are trying to eliminate all ethical systems and any concept of absolute moral code. So all that's left is this list of do's and don'ts and an attempt to strip men of all masculinity.

Okay, here's a question: Who's the better capitalist? One who builds something from nothing, and creates something of value and jobs at the same time, where there were none before...

Or someone who takes an existing system of rather good efficiency and replaces it with another system which creates no more jobs than the existing system. Which creates economic turmoil for those in the current system.

Sure ... though I think the original tea party thing got invaded by interests other than "us versus them", middle America versus DC oligarch insiders.

I just breezed the Unified Theory thing, but he ends with a good point on Christianity. That is pertinent for the individual, BUT the big tent can have atheists or others that can agree in more basic tenets of individual liberty. Maybe Christian tea party groups and other tea party groups are needed, and they can coordinate.

Ace for example finds/makes a safe space without being Christian or Jewish (afaik). But a tea party group can be quickly divided (and it happens) when one demands all meetings start with prayer, and demand ending all abortion be the number one issue.

Ending third term abortion is the winning political issue, and many tea party non-Christians would join a tea party group to "save the nation from tyranny", but would not want to sign up for the rest. The rest can happen after we save the nation, and probably happens better on a cultural level.

(just my opinion on part of what happened to tea party groups the first time around)

One of the shocking things about living in a recovering socialist country in Europe was the preference given to producers over consumers.

Shop assistants clearly used to consider themselves more important than customers; I've heard them remonstrate with customers, saying "I work here; you're just a customer here." They expected deference from customers, shown symbolically in such trivial matters as expecting customers to step aside to let them pass, things that you'd never see in the States.

Capitalism is a system of creative destruction.

And what's something out of nothing about Trump? He built buildings, which is not a paradigm changing model, and he bankrupted some airlines and casinos and then had a successful reality TV show.

Leftists are explicable as victims of poor parenting.

They spend much of their lives rebelling and trying to recreate the "bad parent" in the form of a government that owns everything and doles out goods and favors only to those who show the proper deference and adulation.

Naturally, it flows that leftists want to be at the helm of this beast, so they can perpetuate the only form of justice they know: fealty to the all-powerful, arbitrary authority figure.

195 to me, the big problem with the "Chicago School of Economics" was the said country doesn't matter, global free trade will work out for everyone in the end. They did not put a price/cost on liberty, pollution, unequal laws, communist killers, slavery ... etc.

So economic theory is fun within closed systems, but even within the US we don't have a closed system (right to work states, for example). But going to China and selling freely back to US made the oligarchs of Wall Street rich, and when the leveraged too much, the commoner was forced to bail them out.

TARP seems a lot like the ultimate treasonous act ... not sure how we get back to realities of the value of labor, when trillions are created out of thin air for the oligarchs, underwritten by our DC sellouts. Add that laws don't apply to them and we have ... chaos.

As with the Left's "there is no truth" it is something which has implications which should destroy Islam as practiced but doesn't because double-think is done there too.

Sure, that's part of the system. If I have a super rare product nobody wants (like wombat eyelashes or something) then its worthless no matter what the rarity. Or if I have something people want, but it costs so much to produce that nobody will pay that much for it, its never going to sell either.

Cell phone prices are a very interesting experiment going on. Every new release, they charge more. Its the manufacturers testing how much people will pay for their product. As a fairly new commodity, nobody is really sure. Eventually they'll reach a price nobody wants to pay for, and have to lower or trim it a little. I mean the cost to make a new phone goes up every new iteration, but not as much as they raise the price.

I phones, apparently there's no price too high for these credulous idiots to pay for the symbol, even when its objectively a poorer product than its competitors.

Now, I don't like Takei and think he's a jackwagon, but I also don't like people being basically fired for some person's accusation without any evidence, from decades ago.

But that's not the real story here. When you dig deeper you find...

The Never Trump faction still claims that the president of the United States "is no conservative." And yet, with rare deviations (such as free trade), he spends nearly every day implementing the conservative agenda. Ideas that center-Right activists have demanded for decades are becoming public policy, one after another - to the pleasant surprise of even some of Donald J. Trump's most enthusiastic supporters.

A lot of his rhetoric is not conservative. He's protectionist, he likes government run health care, he's pro-abortion (at least he was in the recent past), he's fine with homosexual "marriage" and so on. In speeches.

But when you start to look at what he's doing you get an entirely different picture. President Trump is the first president in my life time -- perhaps ever -- to govern more constitutional than he ran.

The nevertrump guys cannot get past his rhetoric. But I see what he's doing and so far its really, really good stuff. One of my favorite bits is that he appointed guys into various federal offices who are gutting them. Donald Carson, considered a moronic piece of stupid around here by some, is cutting down the Housing and Urban Development department, for example.

But as long as Trump can keep people chasing squirrels with his tweets and statements, they generally don't even see what is going on behind the scenes, which leaves him basically a free hand.

Well for you. And really video game consoles have always been a bit strange for price. Most people the higher price is still a good value. And with the exception of Nintendo almost all consoles are sold at a loss for an extended period of their life cycle. Their value for the manufacturer is that you will buy enough games and peripherals, and now their online services in order for them to start making money off of you.

283 "Why harsh on Staples (Tom Stemberg, Romney was a financier not the originator)* "

I had many issues with Mitt in 2012. One was the idea was that he was an entrepeneur. At its start Bain Capital would do Venture Capital -- which is investing in new ventures with big risk and big reward. Staples was close to this.

But Bain quickly evolved into an LBO private equity shop, which is about buying and flipping public companies financed with Other People's Equity and a lot of debt, with tax advantages, and squeezing out expense, often by firing people. This is kind of capitalism -- and legal -- but it's the complete opposite of entreprenuralism.

Don't get me going on Carried Interest.

Mitt's involvement in the 2016 proved to me what a snake he is. He gives Mormonism a bad name.

It's pretty clear that "hate speech" isn't what it takes to lose that checkmark despite claims to the contrary.

I looked into getting verified for business reasons but it really is random. You fill out certain information and then Twitter decides f they care and if they *want* to verify you based on criteria they don't share. The minute they unverified Milo the checkmark lost all real meaning.

294 185 My $.02:

Leftists are explicable as victims of poor parenting.

They spend much of their lives rebelling and trying to recreate the "bad parent" in the form of a government that owns everything and doles out goods and favors only to those who show the proper deference and adulation.

Naturally, it flows that leftists want to be at the helm of this beast, so they can perpetuate the only form of justice they know: fealty to the all-powerful, arbitrary authority figure.

There's a booklet in here somewhere.

---------------------------------------
I don't disagree with your basic premise but, yeah, you would need a booklet.

"Leftists are explicable as victims of poor parenting."
That phrasing might work in most cases but......

Take my family. Six kids. Four of us voted for Trump for various reasons. One didn't vote at all but can easily understand why 4 of us chose Trump. No problem.

Then there is my full-blown moonbat sister.
Did she get somehow get "poor parenting" when her 5 siblings did not?

What I do know is that she has daddy (and mommy) issues that the rest of us don't have. It's as if she never moved past adolescence in that respect --- and she's in her 60's. She has some ideal of what a parent OUGHT to be and the real ones don't measure up. But at the same time she seems to be overly concerned about the parents' approval of her. I dunno.

In any case, while "poor parenting" alone could explain many turns to the Left, "poor childing" (!) can also be part of the equation. Some personality types apparently have a harder time leaving behind childish things and developing a healthy adult view of authority figures.

Posted by: Meremortal, no prosecutions, no peace! at November 24, 2017 01:38 PM (3myMJ)

To me a wristwatch is just an appliance that you wear on your wrist so you can tell time and date. For my purposes, a twenty-dollar Timex gets the job done as well as a $6000 Rolex. My watch stays on my arm when I'm elbow deep in the guts of some car I'm working on, so there's no point in me having several grand worth of watch at risk of damage, is there?

"It is great for a work setting where your employees do not have access

And as I said earlier today, value is determined by the purchaser not the producer. Value is in the eyes of the buyer. Advertising/PR seeks to color the glasses the buyer sees the product through.

This applies in the realm of politics too. Consider Fusion GPS as a ruthless and mercenary advertising firm. One which specializes in negative ads against their client's competitors and has no guiding sense of limits/morals in their professional activities.

308 Explanations like this are great for understanding the liberal mindset but unfortunately, I don't think there is a Unified Theory of leftist idiocy. Nor is there a central directing force, a conspiracy of some group of people led by Soros, Euro/global-elitists, or whoever. They are all just cogs in the brainless machine Fighting it would be easier it there were a unifying force or leadership. This is the problem. Leftism has so many permutation, endless new versions, bad ideas and new leaders and movements, sub-movements... It is constantly moving, mutating plague that it's own adherents have no control or understanding. We will never get rid of it of for the foreseeable future and doomed to fight is again and again and again...

309 There was a point in the R primaries (Feb 2016, after FL) where Mitt could have jumped in himself, because no one else was going to beat Trump.

Instead, true to his weasel self, Mitt only stirred up shit using surrogates like Cruz solely to undermine Trump. Ted may never recover.

In some ways, I hate Mitt more than Hillary (because she's certifiably nuts, and he's sanctimonious).

310 Then there is my full-blown moonbat sister.

Its the old nature vs nurture thing. Some people just have a personality that inclines them in one direction or another, regardless of upbringing. The same parenting or background can produce a loving, normal person or a hollow shell of a bitter person. Someone can be abused as a child and grow up wise and protective or abusive and awful.

Its part of what annoyed me about MindHunter, that they strongly implied that serial killers are that way because of how they were raised. And there's definitely something to that. But not everyone who is raised that way goes nuts and starts doing horrific things. To be fair, they point that out too, but its always a danger when you look into people's backgrounds.

I'm inclined to be dry and analytic, my oldest brother was rash and emotion-driven. He got into tons of trouble, I was always the "good boy who did what was right" (I put that in quotes because I am a sinner just like everyone else, I just sinned mostly inside rather than in action). We were raised in the same loving, supportive, wise family.

Yeah, I use my phone's clock function too, sometimes even the alarm function. But the wristwatch is so handy, just swivel my arm, and the time display is right there, 24/7. My flip phone, the external screenlet goes dark after a few minutes, so I have to flip it open to read the time, after fishing it out of my pocket. A pocket watch is actually easier to use as a timepiece than a flip phone, and I have several nice vintage ones.

Yes, I was skeptical too. But, the pics of him in dress uniform, in helicopter, pics of him as an EMT with others, praise from co-workers, all have gone a long way in convincing me. Turns out, he has done similar things before, someone did some research. But this was first time someone came back to thank him.

Plus, that he made them take the GoFund Me page down b/c he thought it was too much money is unheard of. And already said he will donate to other charities. And looking to work at Amazon.

There still is that skepticism lurking in me, which I hate, but part of life. Our Sevice Men come back with needs and our govt. fails them. So many on the street. So many not getting counseling for pain they are in. 22 suicides a day. It's appalling. That this could be corrected for him and some friends would be wonderful.

But I get the cynicism. I have it too.
