Thanksgiving ONT

Greetings and happy Thanksgiving! Tonight's ONT will be brief, but I have a few links for those of you who are fighting through a tryptophan-induced stupor in order to post here. Hope everyone had a wonderful day, filled with something like this:

thanksgiving-dinner.jpg

Or was it? Here are The Most Popular Thanksgiving Foods in All 50 States, Mapped.

Some of these are as to be expected, but some are not. Maryland having crab cakes isn't shocking, but what's wrong with you, Texas? Chicken spaghetti? Really? I've never even heard of chicken spaghetti. I think even a turkey lollipop would be more traditional:

Of course, there's more to Thanksgiving dinner than turkey.

Sides.jpg

Rolls? Cool. Mac & Cheese? Doable. Salad though? Don't you westerners know anything?

Of course, that's a traditional meal. Some people, however...

What I learned when I tried to make a gluten-free, vegetarian, kosher, no soy, vegan, organic, low acid, no dairy …

Honestly, I'll make a reasonable effort to accommodate anyone, but if your dietary restrictions are that esoteric, bring your own food.

Well, enough about the meal. How about The Origin of 7 Thanksgiving Traditions?

Of course, Thanksgiving is about giving thanks, and I'm thankful for all of you Morons who allow me to natter aimlessly at you twice a week. What are you thankful for? I think we can all be thankful that our Fore Fathers had the wisdom and foresight to design for us a system of government that would ensure that we remained free.

I realize that limited government has been under attack for more than a century now, but honestly, 90% of the problems we have in this country could be solved by just going back to the way things were intended.

Some of you may have given thanks in a church today. That's a proper thing to do. I don't know a thing about their ministry, or whether I would even find this church to be a spiritual home, but I do like the sign out front:

church.jpg

I have my own, somewhat non-traditional idea about what Christ meant by “turn the other cheek”, but I'm absolutely sure that he didn't mean to cower in a corner to be shot down like a dog.

Finally, now that Thanksgiving is behind us, Christmas season is upon us. I would like to remind everyone to reach out to the less fortunate in your community, and there is no better way to do that than by helping this wonderful charity:

I hope everyone had a blessed day with friends and family, and would like to close with a money-saving tip for the holidays:

Tonight's ONT brought to you by turkey:

11 Chicken spaghetti is really good! I forget what the sauce is made of, but it's a white/cream type sauce, not tomato based. There are bits of bell pepper in it as well. Red and green if I recall correctly (we haven't had it in a while).

23 Hey ll. From the basement of the last thread, as I have nothing else to say right now:

Evening all. The feast is done and the kitchen cleaned. The wife and one of my sisters went out for a drink ( they have been friends since high school). The rest of the family and guests are upstairs or in the guest house. My brother is going to come back for a few beers after his wife goes to sleep, because he wears the skirt in that family.

Quiet has descended on the house again.

Note that he is introduced by Pete Seeger. At the time Dylan was famous as a "protest singer". This was where he left all that behind and struck out on his own.

All the folk music commies were like, "WTF is this shit? He's supposed to be singing protest songs!"

This was where Dylan basically told the folk music commies to go pound sand. This was a year before he "went electric".

My father was one of eight; my mother, one of six; me, one of five. I have but two... My aunts and uncles have a combined number of children less than their total number... Of me and my four siblings, only one of my sisters has another child... The demographic decline on my wife's side is far worse! Disappointing, it is...

104 From an earlier thread...

Yes, I do. The law is the law, actions are actions. Who you are shouldn't matter. Ever.

If you think it's worse for one person to do it than another, then
write a different law to cover that. So if a cop beats you up, he's
guilty of assault, and if such a law exists, he's also guilty of
misusing his power.

But your assault is the same whether I do it or he does it.

And now, with that, I'm out. So please don't fret too much over this. We're probably arguing semantics as much as anything.

Posted by: BurtTC at November 23, 2017 04:05 PM (Pz4pT)

No, it absolutely is not the same thing. If I assault you - you can fight back to protect yourself. If a police officer assaults you - in most states - you are legally prohibited from fighting to protect yourself; even curling up into a ball will get you a "resisting arrest" charge tacked on.

And the LA Times is in a state that seems to go out of its way to make housing unaffordable.

A short time ago I had a conversation with my SIL about her best friends married daughter. This is a couple, fully employed who had to share an apartment in San Francisco because they couldn't afford rent on their own. I gotta respectfully disagree here. The earlier argument was, by holding the office, one has some additional exposure to the law, because, you should know better. Not committing an act in the line of duty.

In other words, the on duty cop exposes himself to greater punishment because he is acting under the authority of his position. The off duty cop should not be charged more heavily than the civilian, just because he should know better.

The earlier argument that was made was, there is no need to read a judge his rights, he knows his rights. But just as ignorance of the law is no excuse, knowledge of the law should should not bear any additional exposure. We should be equal under the law, and the judge, committing a crime which has nothing to do with his office, should face the same punishment as anyone else.

I'm sure you disagree. Have as much or little fun as you like batting this around. I'm done, off to bed, so questions might as well be rhetorical.

154 For some reason, out of the blue, l am reminded of the "I Will Not Sit At The Kid's Table" Thanksgiving Day protest of 1968. Big extended family dinner. My assigned spot was at one of the "kid's tables". No way I was sitting with 3 - 8 year olds at kindergarden sized table/chairs and not get to hear any of the good stories my aunts and uncles told. T

hey probably wanted me to help maintain order with the little ones. If they had explained it that way I probably would have been OK with it but what they said was there wasn't any room at "the big tables". 172 I just think Bob Dylan doesn't want to get owned by anyone. He wants to do his thing, then move on to the next thing. When the Left wanted to own him and be their mouthpiece, he quit doing protest songs and became a rock star. When everyone started getting into his bag, he went to Woodstock and worked with The Band. Later on when he became a Christian and started doing his Gospel thing, the Born Again Crowd wanted him to be their mouthpiece, and he pulled back and tried to be commercial and make videos for MTV and tour with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and then do The Willbury's....

Now he's doing Sinatra. He hasn't written a real protest song since 19 fucking 63, but when he croaks, the first line of his obit is going to state that he was a "Protest Singer."

177 Dylan was a chameleon back then. He got a little... strange, for a while. Tambourine Man is cool, it's hard to play like he did it, although it's pretty simple. Drop D tuning, normally Capo 2, etc. Same tuning as Hard Rain is Gonna Fall, and John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High". And "Norwegian Wood" by the Beatless.

Posted by: rickb223 at November 23, 2017 10:05 PM (v9rtm)

That's always a difficult proposition. Theoretically I have no issue with using force, up to and including deadly force, to resist unlawful violence from law enforcement. From a practical perspective, you can be almost certain that either a) you'll end up dead or in the hospital, or b) you'll go to prison if you survive the encounter. It's unusual for people to come out of that without charges, although it has happened a couple of times with no-knock unannounced Gestapo raids by SWAT.

Anyone dumb enough to buy a cell phone off a dude in a black van with balloons on it is too dumb to be allowed to possess money, anyway.

329 MisHum and all --

When we had the circular "what do you give thanks for" thing, I did the usual "for family", then added "For the AOSHQ, because it's extended family."

Sister asked was that where I'd asked for prayers, and when I said yes, got thanks from her and the other sister.

Both are libs, but with only the three of us blood-related left, and two husbands ... we don't let that divide us. Politics in family gatherings are strictly taboo.

330 Just wanted to say that as a Texan, whoever said the most popular Thanksgiving day dish down here was chicken spaghetti is crazy - we don't eat that, ever. For Thanksgiving it is turkey and cornbread dressing, sides like broccoli/cheese/rice casserole, green beans, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, salad, etc. No darn chicken spaghetti at all.

Gah, was just thinking about Christmas. No idea what to get dad. He doesn't have the attention span to read anymore. He has an extensive library. He wanted me to spend the night tonight when I took him home, but I have other obligations in the am. Will spend afternoon with him and spend night tomorrow and make tacos per his request. Moving in with him may be sooner than I planned. It will not be easy.

334 Slap, thanks for being the keeper of the prayer list.

I have a thanksgiving to report. My stepdaughter went on the prayer list last year because her dad and I got uninvited for Thanksgiving after the election. It seemed to bring out some disappointments in our family relationships.

Anyway, this year, not only were we invited for Thanksgiving, but my stepdaughter called me a few weeks ago for some spiritual support. She is feeling the call to renew her relationship with Christ and trust God more deeply. She is in academia, which generally doesn't foster the kind of humility for true faith.

It was very humbling that she trusts me enough to share her questions, doubts, and fears.

Anyway, things are going in a better direction and I hope she follows through in her spiritual growth.

I want to express my very deepest thanks to the Horde for caring about my concerns and supporting me and my family in your prayers, and I wanted you to know that God has heard you and answered.

May you receive His richest blessing in your lives.

338 Back when I was driving over the road I had this student with me and we stopped at the Wolverine Truck Stop outside Detroit. We were on our way into the truck stop when this guy pulled up and said he had brand new VCR's for sale out of his trunk. I told him that we weren't interested, but because it was getting close to Christmas, the rookie thought he was going to get a deal. Brand New for only $40.00! Guy shows us one out of a box for what it looked like and the rookie fell for it hook line and sinker. I kept telling him not to do it, but he was ready. So guy takes his money and gives him a sealed box. We go in and eat, come back out to the truck and he decides to open it. He was the proud owner of two bricks taped to the box so they wouldn't move. I didn't say another word, but then, I really didn't have to.

341 Yet again, my oldest son and I blew the gravy. My MIL made the best damn giblet gravy in the entire world. She passed away in early 2009, and my oldest son and I have been trying to replicate it since then. (Both he and I worked as cooks for several years, me in fast food, him in much higher end places, so it's not like either of us are kitchen virgins.) We've come really close a couple of times, but otherwise, like today, it's been a complete disaster. We suspect that today's mistake was burning the roux. No matter what we did to it, it still tasted burnt. The rest of the family is getting really ticked at us for being such screw ups. Gah! I'm surprised they let us sit at the table with them, but there was an awful lot of kvetching.

I am kind of wondering if the secret to Mammaw's insanely good giblet gravy wasn't MSG. We have been trying to replicate it for years and I keep trying to remember how she made it and she almost always used a small brown bottle of something (does kitchen bouquet have MSG in it?) 366 Generally the taller ones will have more of the glass bubbles with the temperature tags. I would go with a 15 to 18 inch model. I got one for a birthday present and I loved it, right up until the cat knocked it off the bookcase and it broke. And they are reasonably accurate. The one's in the wooden case would be a little more break resistant I think. Also a little classier.

I've advocated against bullying and abuse of turkeys all my life. I've no recollection of the event in question, although I cannot tell you how sorry I am that my actions were interpreted by the turkey to be demeaning and abusive, and for that I feel truly ashamed. I will make it a point to reflect upon my life and try to do better. I think turkeys always ought to be believed when they make such claims, otherwise we risk silencing their voices.

407 Minutes left of Thanksgiving Day here in the Central Not-Daylight Saving Time Zone.

Before this day is out, I'd like to try one more trick. Something I haven't done in decades: A standing back-flip on the trampoline. In the dark. All I have to do is avoid the big hole that has prevented anyone from using it for a long time.

Here, hold my brandy...

408 Wonkette (stumbled on to her site accidentally from the sidebar) claims Franken's "apology" was for "wield[ing] power in a way that made someone with less of it uncomfortable." Got that scalding take?

She also says, "We need to hear...more people like Al Franken...he's handling this with ... dignity and respect..."

And most hilariously, "You are in for a world of disappointment over the next few weeks if you thought that predatory dudes could be identified by their stated politics."

Of course she actually CAN if she's running with the safe money odds.

Flipped around the dial after dinner and two local stations were updating us on a much needed update of the allegations against Moore. Keep us informed.

I am kind of wondering if the secret to Mammaw's insanely good giblet gravy wasn't MSG. We have been trying to replicate it for years and I keep trying to remember how she made it and she almost always used a small brown bottle of something (does kitchen bouquet have MSG in it?) The richness/intensity of the flavor seems to be the missing link.

421 Bingo! Booted up my old HP laptop that I loaded Linux Mint 18 onto back in May or thereabouts. Finally found the proper power brick for it, right here on my desk. The on-board battery is dead, despite it being a relatively new purchase. Shut it down again, and left the power brick on to charge up the battery. Once the battery is back up, I get the loveely job of taking the damn thing apart to try to find out why only half the keyboard works after the last time I took it apart. Hoping it's a ribbon cable not seated properly in its socket.

434 Nope. No MSG. A sprinkle of Kitchen Bouquet if the gravy was too pale. The old girl was straight off the farm and didn't hold with novelties like MSG. (Of course, she was such a great cook she didn't need it in the first place.)

Followed the oral recipe to the letter. One tablespoon of flour to one tablespoon of turkey grease. Stir into nicely browned roux, dump in chopped up cooked gizzard and liquid gizzard was simmered in, followed by small additions of water until appropriate consistency. Also included all fond from bottom of pan to add flavor and color. Some salt and pepper. We think we burned the roux.

Oldest son worked for a while in a Cajun-style restaurant. Claims he had to make really dark roux because it turned much paler when actually used for cooking. I was off in living room teaching youngest grandson the chorus to The Witchdoctor song while daughter screamed at me that the smoke alarms were going to go off at any moment. I assumed oldest son was smart enough and experienced enough to know when to add the giblets and broth. My bad. But it was really important that youngest grandson learn the chorus from the Witchdoctor song. It's a major component of American culture!

At Christmas, we will not make the roux so dark -- if we are allowed anywhere near the kitchen. Youngest son, who has watched entirely too much Elton Brown, says he's going to do it. Hell, we won't even let him make the green bean casserole or the mashed potatoes.

Same here. Born in TX, raised here as much as an Army brat could be, and I never heard of "chicken spaghetti" until today.

In my house, if we don't have turkey for Thanksgiving, it's prime rib. In which case we have turkey for Christmas. And I am the only one in the family who eats rice as a side...but then, I'm the only one in the family that eats rice at all.

443 My friend down in NC had a bad start to Thanksgiving. Her female friend had an older woman who lived with her. (Her friend's husband had died this past New Year's.) She was having trouble breathing since the weekend and decided Thursday morning to take her to the ER. When my friend's friend asked her to buckle up, she was unresponsive. Called 9/11 and they told her to get her out of the car and begin CPR. (The woman was on the heavy side and her friend said that if they hadn't been lifting weights the last year, she would never have been able to get her out of the truck.) My friend got a call that she died on the ground while giving CPR. EMS came, got a pulse back and took her to the hospital but the woman's niece, a nurse, told the hospital she had a DNR, so she died. My friend had gone to the house, then drove her to the hospital as she was in no shape to drive. My friend had to finally drag her friend out of the hospital because there was nothing she could do. Brought the friend home where she polished off a small bottle of wine, then fed her so she wouldn't be inebriated on her drive back home.

Not a great way to 'celebrate' although I guess the lesson here is that if one is to be thankful for anything, it's being alive, all bitching about the pitfalls and troubles of life notwithstanding.
