6 Foul! That's a caplock musket on the Springfield patent.

A pilgrim would be using a matchlock, and English dog-lock or possibly - verrrry possibly a Dutch Snaphance with the separate frizzen.

Nice work by Rockwell, but these things are important.

41 Rickl,
When I had my minor heart attack last November and finally got the EOB's many months latter....they billed my insurance about $125,000 and the insurance paid about $95,000. I wound up about $15,000 out of pocket because of our high deductible and the fact that my rehab didn't start until January so a whole new deductible. I finally got the final bill for the remaining balance, about $3000 and just told them I'd make payments and they were good with that.
So, I'm thankful for being alive.

49 Happy Thanksgiving All!

I just want to add a little tip.
When you next buy garlic , peel all of the garlic and drop them into your olive oil. They flavor the oil and when you need garlic they can be fished out and used in cooking. An older Italian woman does this and I thought it was a really good idea! She puts the oil and garlic in a semi shallow plastic bowl and keeps it in the refrigerator.

Turkeys used to be abundant here 15 years ago. Two were coming up over a hill and I snuck around the other side to surprise them. They saw me and buried their heads in some tufts of grass. I knew right where they went but couldn't see them at all. They took off when I was like ten feet from them.

Three trail cams have been out in the woods for a week, but I bet I don't have a single turkey on them. Deer, raccoons, squirrels and rabbits, maybe the blue heron or bobcats and coyotes. Will check a little later.

A few years back I was able to vacation a couple times at a large ranch in that area that some relative had an interest in - 5000 acres all inside one fence.

We'd drive around the ranch roads in an old pickup, and it was the only place I've been where it was routine to come over a little hill and see a flock of 50 - 60 wild turkeys running off at our approach. The ranch hand said there were several flocks like that on the grounds.

98 On the turkey habitat change ...

some people blame the bobcats, we have more of them now and they hunted some this year. But not many are hunting raccoons (lower price on hides) and they are overpopulated. I think that is more likely, or both. (some say the coons eat more corn than the deer)

The habitat hasn't changed much ... though bush honeysuckle has taken over many woods, which may indeed crowd out a lot of other food sources.

Several really big storms have blown through also over the last five years ... took down a lot of trees, which opens the canopy, so that bush honeysuckle is worse than ever. A lot of woods are choked with the stuff.

191 The mascots for the Catholic HS my oldest two attended are the *Crusaders*. Some leftist heathens petitioned the board to change the name for all the well-known BS reasons.

Big fuss - the parents and school board crushed them like the pis-ants they are.

Crusaders it remains - AND they added a sword to the crusader logo just to underscore how the parish feels about the whole thing.

I like the humor in this one, especially as it probably wouldn't be allowed (hate that word in this context) today. So different from his family Thanksgiving painting we've all seen. Now I wonder how many would get the allusion.

One thing that made me smile was the way Rockwell painted the background. It has a definite Bob Ross feel to the technique. And against the dark trees, the young boy's face and expression really stand out. It would be easy for any viewer to start imagining a children's story ti go with the painting.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's sad that those who fight for the right reasons are the ones who wind up getting killed, ala Europe in WWI.

Another ponderable thing is the nature vs nurture argument. As much as I absolutely loathe the progressive leftards, they will fight to protect their ideology, as wrong, misguided and contrary to All Things Good as it is. Now, if we could just direct their fervor towards good things, we'd be fine.

Too bad we can't brainwash them with teh good things, since they seem to be so susceptible to allowing others to do their thinking for them.

According to the Reynold's site,

Q Is it ok to cook a turkey in a convection oven with an oven bag?
A Yes, if it is a full-size convection oven. Countertop size convection ovens (like the size of a microwave oven) are too small and the bag may touch the sides or the heating element and melt. When using a convection oven, reduce the recommended oven temperature by 25 degrees and roast for the same amount of time. Always preheat the oven before using an oven bag and never exceed 400 degrees.

270 A sound detected in the search for a missing submarine with 44 crew members aboard is consistent with a non-nuclear explosion, officials in Argentina said Thursday.

Argentine Navy spokesman Enrique Balbi said at a news conference the relatives of the crew have been informed and that the search will continue until there is full certainty about the fate of the ARA San Juan.

271 Nancy Kerrigan was not bad looking, but she looked like ice wouldn't melt in her mouth.

The dumb thing was that Tonya was really, really good on the ice. She just wasn't as graceful and ballet-like. She was more athletic, so the judges didn't like it as much.

That's so very accurate, booknlass. It almost makes me want to say a prayer for all those leftards that God will shine His Light upon their minds that they might recognize Truth and they'd stop looking at the bad side of everything, even if they have to make up something bad in order to do so.

But that's something I can't help them with. That's between them and God. I mean, I'll always hope for the best for them, but that's about all I can do. I hope that's enough.

279 Oh, I agree. It's just one of those vague notions that strike a fellow from time to time - was thinking of the Europeans and Japanese.
Now, here in the states, we've got some amazing profiles - probably the best in the world, and certainly the most mixed and selected.

========

Once we learn to manipulate the genome at will, this will be a non-issue. We don't really know how mixing adds value, if at all.

If we can immediately and precisely specify something of value, then good riddance to the hit-or-miss, lengthy process of selection.

Kerrigan had a weird presence on the ice. Her arms and hands were always spastic looking. Like when she did a spin it looked like somebody just spun up a scarecrow.

But the quail, which were plentiful, are rare now.

298 There is an excellent book I've read, "Disasters of the Deep" by Edwyn Gray. It's a history of submarine accidents. It doesn't cover combat losses, only accidents. It also serves as a history of the development of submarine technology.

I'm sure there are worse ways to die than being trapped in a sunken submarine, but that has to be in the top ten.

I think I saw a wild turkey sitting on top of a mailbox once. I only
caught a glimpse out of the corner of my eye as I was driving. I wasn't

I saw a big one, a hen, I think, as it didn't have much in the way of comb or wattles, just strolling across the southbound lanes of I-15 near Cascade, MT, round about Nov. 5. There was next to no traffic, she probably made it OK.

Somehow, it needs to be written into the Consumer Protection Act that automatic updates of software in any consumer-owned device, be it Fitbit or Cadillac are flat-out illegal, and vendor must provide notification first, and then seek permission. And no "implied" permission.
