Cowbell: US Growth Forecasts on the Rise

A growing economy is a president's best Tweet.

Don’t look now, but U.S. growth forecasts are moving higher. That’s helping to support U.S. stocks.

Projections for U.S. economic growth from two Federal Reserve banks have risen in recent weeks. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York on Friday forecast that gross domestic product will rise 3.8% in the fourth quarter, up from a forecast of 3.2% a week earlier.

A separate measure from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta forecast 3.4% growth last week. Research firm DataTrek noted that the rival forecasts are outpacing projections from human economists, who on average expect 2.7% growth for the quarter.

Even if the less optimistic Atlanta Fed model is correct, it would be the best quarter for the U.S. economy in more than three years.

Isn't the 3.8% projected growth perilously close to the 4.0% Trump called for, which many said was impossible (because Obama hadn't managed anything close)?

While voters -- including Trump voters -- fault him on his "chaotic"
style, they are pleased with the economy:

But when the subject turned to the economy, opinions of Trump noticeably warmed.

Trump wants to "bring the economy jobs 00 infrastructure, construction," said Katrina Harrell, a 38-year-old black self-employed businesswoman who voted for Hillary Clinton last year. Harrell was extremely critical of almost all other aspects of the administration, but on the economy she gave Trump credit.

"I think those are good moves," she said. "I mean, that's what he knows -- business."

Another Clinton voter, Jacob Eubank, a 35-year-old, white administrator at the University of North Carolina campus in Wilmington, shared a similar view.

"I think he's good just for the stock market," he said.

Michael Leimone, a 41-year-old cook who voted for Trump last year but now finds him disappointing, praised his economic record.

"I think he's turning it in the right direction," he said.

Comments like that exasperate Democratic officials, who say that there's little evidence to back Trump's claim that his election has worked a turnaround in the U.S. economy.

The Economist reports that blue-collar wages are "surging" -- and then gives most of the credit to Barack Obama (natch).

IF THERE was a defining economic problem for America as it recovered from the financial crisis, it was stagnant wages. In the five years following the end of the recession in June 2009 wages and salaries rose by only 8.7%, while prices increased by 9.5%. In 2014 the median worker’s inflation-adjusted earnings, by one measure, were no higher than they were in 2000. It is commonly said that wage stagnation contributed to an economic anxiety in middle America that carried Donald Trump into the White House.

Yet Mr Trump's rise seems to have coincided with a turnaround in fortunes for the middle class. In 2015 median household income, adjusted for inflation, rose by 5.2%; in 2016 it was up by another 3.2%. During those two years, poorer households gained more, on average, than richer ones. The latest development--one that will be of particular interest to Mr Trump--is that blue-collar wages have begun to rocket. In the year to the third quarter, wage and salary growth for the likes of factory workers, builders and drivers easily outstripped that for professionals and managers. In some cases, blue-collar pay growth now exceeds 4% (see chart).

"Coincided." The leftwing Economist then goes on to femsplain that this is just an acceleration of trends that started under Barack Obama that no one ever noticed and that didn't show up in economic data.

55 Scott Adams may have predicted Trump, but so did I and many others.

I don't agree with his current predictions. He sees no chance for Moore to win. I expect that he will win, because turnout factors will break his way.

Adams also sees big D pick-ups in 2018. An off-year, but again turn-out factors favor the Rs -- Trump has an energized base. I think that 24 D Senate seats being up, vs 10 R seats, ensures an R pick-up of at least five seats, maybe more. Question is how many GOPe quislings does Bannon knock out. The Rs may lose a few seats, but they'll keep the House.

2) He promised to reduce regulation. He has.
3) He promised to put America first. He has.
4) He promised to control the border. In progress.
5) He just returned from a very successful trip to Asia, including 30 CEO's that went with him to China. He has developed a very good relationship with the Japanese Prime minister, and has outlined a very coherent policy for the Western Pacific. 137 Well of course all these voters being interviewed, if their lives depended on it, probably couldn't tell you a single important detail or thing behind their favorable views of Trump's policies.

It's long been one of the dumbest - which is saying something - political/presidential myths, that presidents "run" the economy like a manager runs a small store.

A president can hurt the economy (most often the case). A president can *not* damage the economy (generally the best a president can do). But the dots have to be connected, or it's nonsense. Trump of course follows both a "great" recession and years of idiotic policies, so his sound instincts/choices naturally should lead to at least some improvement.

Please, anyone, name a single thing that happened in the 8 years of the affirmative action intern - a single thing - that could reasonably have been good for the economy. Can't recall one. On the negative side of the ledger, of course, we have enormously stupid policies that directly suppressed growth (O-care, what amounted to vandalism against the key energy sector, utter fiscal chaos, clear and bizarre anti-freedom and anti-entrepreneurial atmospherics from the top).

138 Make 50 grand a year. Take off 10-12.5k for a family of 4 insurance. Take off 10k for mortgage. Gas take off 3 grand a year for the family. Federal and state income taxes let's say 5 grand minimum. Property tax 2-3 grand. Food 6 grand a year at 500 a month for family of 4. Car payments and insurance on 2 cars would be 600 a month so 7200 a year. Utility bills 3k for the year. Home and life insurance 2k a year. Doctor bills before your family meets the decuctable 3-4K a year.

In the red and not everything has been accounted for yet. 50 grand for a family of 4 is double the poverty line I believe.

You may be right, but ... first, we never really recovered from the housing bubble in 2008; we more or less limped along, it seems to me. For this reason, the usual cycle - which would imply we're due for a recession - may not apply. There was lots of cash on the sidelines as leery investors and businessmen waited to see what fiasco the Magic Negro would foist on us next.

Second, Trump would inevitably be blamed if there were a recession, so he might as well take credit for the economic boom. I think he actually does deserve credit for it, in part.

198 It would be nice if Trump would use his bullhorn to raise the level of the discussion just a tad, because it still *is*, mostly, a mindless model of "coincides with" for most people. They have no understanding of how govt. can hurt the economy. They do, indeed, "think" only in terms of correlation, not causation, when it comes to politicians and policies. And of course they labor under the suffocating distortion of the media, upon which they rely for info and frameworks - and which fails them utterly.

So crowing about new Dow highs is meh, as I see no effort at all to tie economic improvement to policies and ideas Trump actually does champion, or is or has enacted.

I even recall, many times, hearing that such claims showed how stupid and naïve, and unserious Trump was as a candidate. NO ONE could promise and deliver 4% growth.

And here is the thing - this is being done despite congress, and with tax reform still waiting, and the obamacare drag. Imagine, just imagine, what would happen if we could ditch Obamacare, complete tax reform, and get congress to do its job. Probably 6%. 4% was a low end prediction you idiots.

That is the cost, every damn year of your silly policies. $300 to $600 billion per year in economic growth, compounded, you ninnies! That is how you do welfare, how you solve deficits, how you repair infrastructure.

At a superficial level that's true, but at a more profound one, I don't think it is.

Under the Reign of Error, I suspect businessmen, employers generally, and investors felt that they had bull's eyes on their backs. That, the onerous regulations, plus the uncertainty of what that idiot might do next, inhibited economic growth.

Removing that cloud from the horizon, even without doing anything substantively, I think has spurred the hell out of the economy.

I would liken it to Trump's effect on illegal immigration. Any new legislation? No. Wall built yet? No. But nevertheless, illegal immigration has dropped off dramatically. Why? Because of the tone Trump has set.

I maintained to my family that 95% of what a President does is setting the tone, the atmosphere. Compare and contrast Carter with Reagan for an example.

242 Back in the 90s I used to get my Economist late Friday, hot off the presses, and devour it on the train home.

It was awesome then. I think I remember it hitting newsstands at midnight on Thursday, but I might be misremembering.

What I didn't know at the time was that its editor was Michael Kinsley, who was also the founding editor of Slate back when Slate was good.

Kinsley is in the Dershowitz category of liberals who are good to read because whatever their bias they are intellectually honest.

243 Yep, Scientific American, another casualty of the great endumbening.

It gets tricky to discuss how things used to be, vs. today, because while the press has always been a problem (Nixon was elected, twice, *despite* the press, and eventually driven from office mostly *because* of the press), in some ways things used to be better.

There was a time when, for example, the NYT's top national security reporter could move directly into a key sub-cabinet job involving national security with ..... the Reagan administration. I don't have to ask you to imagine any such thing today. It gets complicated and tedious to explain, but the press has gone from mostly a problem to a complete catastrophe, for the country.

244 A private university in New York City is hosting a panel on combating anti-Semitism - but there's at least one glaring problem, according to critics: an avowed anti-Zionist protester (Sarsour) is among the so-called experts.

Further, the event, which is moderated by Amy Goodman of Democracy Now, appears to reject anti-Semitism while also exhibiting an anti-Israel stance.

If Democracy Now is involved then it is leftist subterfuge for raging anti-Israel anti-semitism.

Dunno when The Economist went off the shallow end. I used to get it at home (newsprint). That was probably the 70s/80s. 309 #137 - exactly.

What I try to explain to people is that the economy has a natural growth rate of 3.2 to 3.5% over inflation. It will grow at that rate indefinitely if left the hell alone.

Politicians can rob from this growth rate...pull it down from its long term average by pursuing dumb policies, and essentially trying to steal tomorrow's growth to spend today. Once the idiot policies are removed, economic growth will often surge right past the long term average and make up for lost time. Therefore, the longer dumb policies keep growth at 2%, the stronger the recovery will be once those policies are removed.

trump has the huge advantage of following the idiotic polices of Obama, meaning economic growth ahs been suppressed for eight years. So we will have to grow 4-5% for several years to make up for lost ground.

318 286 I maintained to my family that 95% of what a President does is setting the tone, the atmosphere. Compare and contrast Carter with Reagan for an example.

I can't put a number on it but in general I agree with that and have watched it in action (or not) since JFK.

Yeah, I just pulled a number out of my ass. Kinda like Obama Administration economic numbers.

No kidding. I'd be afraid to touch her.

I'd be afraid to be within 100 yards of her. Out her of sight, out her of mind, out of any possible assertion that would cause my life to be in tatters.

Must be at the age of 30, because at 29 years old, mine are high and tight like a 19 year old Marine Corps recruit's crew cut.

Same thing with parents. Tell a kid they are a loser they'll have better than even odds of being losers. Tell them they are winners same thing. (yes finer points on feeding, punishment etc. but in general)

323 Bander, I was just going from vague memory. And absolutely, it was a fantastic publication back then. Amazing what dense, substantive, and readable coverage on the entire world you could get from one magazine.

Can't think of anything like it today.

Can't even think of what to stitch together, from any number of existing outlets, that would come close, today. That's how far things have fallen.

Think about it, the guy wants to be "sexy" to a lady, so he acts like a woman and gets all flirty and shows a little skin??

Posted by: Soothsayer -- That's class! at November 20, 2017 06:57 PM (YUajH)

Not the same thing. A man who does this is a bully, forcing a woman to deal with his rudeness.

I sincerely doubt there was anything remotely "flirty" about it. More like, "here's my cock, deal with it, honey."

327 My Economist era was late 80s early 90s. I thought it was the best thing since sliced Jello. I completely cribbed my writing style from them back then.

I 'borrowed' from Alexander Pope, then PJ O'Rourke, then Jonathan Swift, then Oscar Wilde, then Carlene the Misanthropic Bitch. Once you've cribbed from three or four masters it's not really cribbing anymore; it's influence.

Especially if the masters are Irish.

They get sued a lot because of lying and inaccuracies in the text. Easier to do that in England too.

Really, they're great when you need visuals though. Some big thing unfolding they've got all the snaps you could want.

330 We voted yesterday on our pastor's compensation package for next year. We have two ministers, a Senior and an Assistant. The health insurance for those two families is costing us $77k next year.

This seems high to me.
Posted by: Grump928(C) at November 20, 2017 06:56 PM (60v4h)

That is insanely high. It must be the Cadillac Gold Plan + Mercedes Benz bullion.

If you are a member you should ask to see the books and get an explanation. I hate to say someone is skimming off the top, or one of those terms, but I'd get an explanation of that line item. Maybe it was 17,000, or 7,000, and someone made a typo.

If you voted, then you're not the Catholic Church. Maybe go to an Elder. I'd have pants on fire over that number.

If you're concerned, there are probably some cosmetic surgery options available out there. Get a lift, a tuck to remove the wrinkles, depilation, etc.

Yeah. My BFF's writing style is so similar to mine that I joke that one of us is redundant. We've talked about whether it was PJ's influence or any of others that we have in common, but you're right.

One assimilates all the influences and the cribbing becomes just your eddy in the common river.

340 B. Hussein O' Commie: "Some of those jobs of the past are just not going to come back, and when somebody says like the person you just mentioned who I'm not going to advertise for, that he's going to bring all these jobs back, well how exactly are you going to do that? What are you going to do? There's--there's no answer to it. He just says, "Well, I'm going to negotiate a better deal." Well, how-- what--how exactly are you going to negotiate that? What magic wand do you have? And usually, the answer is he doesn't have an answer."
