New York Times Suspends Glenn "Thumb Fedora" Thrush Over Sexual Misconduct Claims

Ladies, stay away from Fedora Tippers.

The New York Times said on Monday that it was suspending Glenn Thrush, one of its most prominent reporters, after he was accused of sexually inappropriate behavior.

...

"The behavior attributed to Glenn in this Vox story is very concerning and not in keeping with the standards and values of The New York Times," The Times said in a statement on Monday. "We intend to fully investigate and while we do, Glenn will be suspended."

The Times also said Mr. Thrush had said he planned to enter a substance abuse program and that the newspaper supported his decision.

The substance he's been abusing? The most addictive drug in the world -- mish.

Here's the Vox story accusing him of "luring" young female reporters into private tete-a-tetes and then turning the meeting in a sexual direction.

A friend of the woman confronted him in a text, demanding he never "lure" women into such a situation again.

Those texts are here.

Thrush was apologetic but defensive.

"I don't lure anybody ever," he wrote, according to screenshots provided by Padro Ocasio. "I got drunk because I got some shitty health news. And I am acutely aware of the hurdles that young women face in this business and have spent the better part of 20 years advocating for women journalists."

I love that their go-to defense is always "I tell other men not to do the things I do."

If Thrush is acutely aware of what young women face in the business of political journalism, he should also know it’s because he himself is one of the problems women face. Five years ago, when Thrush and I were colleagues at Politico, I was in the same bar as Padro Ocasio's friend -- perhaps the same booth -- when he caught me off guard, put his hand on my thigh, and suddenly started kissing me. Thrush says that he recalls the incident differently.

Three young women I interviewed, including the young woman who met Thrush in June, described to me a range of similar experiences, from unwanted groping and kissing to wet kisses out of nowhere to hazy sexual encounters that played out under the influence of alcohol. Each woman described feeling differently about these experiences: scared, violated, ashamed, weirded out. I was -- and am -- angry.

Details of their stories suggest a pattern. All of the women were in their 20s at the time. They were relatively early in their careers compared to Thrush, who was the kind of seasoned journalist who would be good to know. At an event with alcohol, he made advances. Afterward, they (as I did) thought it best to stay on good terms with Thrush, whatever their feelings.

"I apologize to any woman who felt uncomfortable in my presence, and for any situation where I behaved inappropriately. Any behavior that makes a woman feel disrespected or uncomfortable is unacceptable," Thrush said in a statement emailed to me on November 19.

This seems to be yet another I Admit Nothing But Apologize For Everything statement of the kind we're growing so familiar with, though at least he does suggest that maybe he behaved "inappropriately." But that's pretty vague, isn't it? By design, I'd imagine.

...

It wasn't that Thrush was offering young women a quid pro quo deal, such as sex in exchange for mentorship. Thrush, just by his stature, put women in a position of feeling they had to suck up and move on from an uncomfortable encounter.

On that night five years ago, I joined Thrush and a handful of other reporters for a few rounds at the Continental, a Politico hangout in Rosslyn, Virginia. At first, nothing seemed strange, until the crowd had dwindled down to Thrush, me, and one other female colleague.

Thrush tossed a $20 bill at her and told her to take a cab and leave us, "the grown-ups," alone. He slid into my side of the booth, blocking me in. I was wearing a skirt, and he put his hand on my thigh. He started kissing me. I pulled myself together and got out of there, shoving him on my way out.

In the morning, Thrush sent me an apologetic email. I didn't save it, but I recall it as similar to the one he would later send to Padro Ocasio's friend in June. He said he was sorry, but he didn't say for what, exactly.

Ah there you go: I Admit Nothing But Apologize for Everything.

She says Glenn Thrush began spreading the rumor that she had come on to him, and says she heard from other women that he pulled the same crap with them. (See article for that.)

The writer details a couple of other stories which are more ambiguous and scandalous than actionable or criminal. But together, taken as true, they present a guy with a problem, and his problem makes problems for women.

She mentions that some women spread rumors/warnings to never attend an event with Thrush where drinking was involved, and to ignore his private Direct Messages on Twitter. Coincidentally -- or not -- Thrush stopped tweeting on September 19th, exactly a month two months (for those who can count, a category that does not include myself) before the November 19th statement he made to this writer. One wonders if she had been using twitter as a means of asking questions before he shut it down.

Some of this is... I don't want to say defensible, but let me say this: Many people, when meeting and trying to make a good impression, have a self-interested reason for being friendly. They want to "network," they want to make a good impression on someone who can do them career favors. And sometimes they want to get laid.

I don't think it's fair that two people can have different motives for pretending to be interested in each other -- one for careerist reasons, the other for sexual reasons -- and say "Oh the latter self-interested reason is bad."

Someone using someone for one selfish reason (help me get ahead in my career) can't be that surprised that the person they're trying to use is also trying to use them (help me feel like I'm the sort of man women desire).

And without a direct chain-of-command type situation, where the women he's kissing up on are his actual underlings who he can promote or frustrate in their careers at his whim, I don't know if we can go around criminalizing men's advances to women. Even if those men are married, and even if they look like Glenn Thrush.

That said, some of this stuff, if true, does seem to cross the line. Alcohol, I guess, is being offered as an affirmative defense here, and yeah, people make bad decisions when drunk, and tend to miss subtle nonverbal hints like "This woman is totally turned off by me and almost cringes at my advance."

Still, after a couple of times of being told "You get out of control with women seeking career help," maybe pull a Franken and "reflect" with your family a bit?

And what the hell's with the "she came on to me" bullshit? Not a crime -- but it seems so pathetic as to verge on pathological.

If true, of course.

In any event, this is the sort of thing Glenn Thrush must be talking about when he claims he's "championing" women in the workplace.

By the Way: I tried to link this meme in the last post, but I glitched it. Here's hoping it works the second time.

PS, I wanted to mix in a non-sex-harassment post between the last one but everyone keeps talking about this Ovoid Thumb so I figured, let's get it out of the way.

You haven't been taking the required Sexual Harassment seminars yearly have you? I'm curious why you'd say "substance abuse" if you just meant "alcohol abuse."

Wouldn't you just say the latter, if it is the latter? Substance abuse leaves open a lot of possiblities which have social stigmas greater than alcoholism.

.As I have said before, this entire thing reminds me more and more of the satanic ritual child abuse scare of the 1980s. Innocent people are going to suffer because someone had or will have inaccurate *repressed memories* of some innocent behavior surface or some such other memory issues. And that may be the price society has to pay to ensure the abusers out there are called to account.

Not defending anyone in particular, but the human memory is strange and gets extremely unreliable as time goes by and accusations from years or decades ago simply can't be trusted without corroborating evidence which is typically not to be found.

not entirely. Some of this stuff involves apparently unconsented-to groping. You can say it's "differing memories" and all but if it's as this woman claims... well, it sounds over the line to me.

Some of it is of that ambiguous-area stuff, but...

Let me put it this way: The point of the "Base System" is that you're never, as a man, more than one step past where the girl feels comfortable at. You can try to touch the boob while you're making out; if she pushes your hand away, okay, called out at second, but at least you were just one step ahead of where she was comfortable.

Jumping into making out (which she says was uninvited) plus sexual touching is skipping bases. You can't guage if a chick is comfortable where you are when you skip bases.

Yeah, right. Harv the Perv also advocated for women. We're all finding out what that's worth, aren't we? Harv also probably got drunk.
Shitty health news is no excuse. There are plenty of people who've been told they have cancer, but they didn't run out and sexually harass someone.

Posted by: nerdygirl at November 20, 2017 04:27 PM (+lVUW)

87 Here are three reasons why Glenn Thrush's behavior with women advances the cause of feminism:

1. Glenn only came onto attractive female reporters in their 20s (we'll call them "babes"). Since he didn't hit on unattractive female reporters in their 20s, it shows that he respected them as equals in his noble profession. The babes had no shame about being attractive and flaunting it, so they're not true feminists anyhow.

2. Glenn didn't hit on any female reporters in their 30s, because he respected them for their career accomplishments in a competitive work environment. He saw them as his peers!

3. We're only hearing the hysterical shrieking from the babes Glenn didn't bang. Their inability to protect a source shows that they're unfit to be reporters. Feminism is not about advancing some chick in a career that she's not fit for just because she's a chick.

Posted by: Matt Yglesias, Voxplainer at November 20, 2017 04:27 PM (j+dfT)

88 And without a direct chain-of-command type situation, where the women he's kissing up on are his actual underlings who he can promote or frustrate in their careers at his whim, I don't know if we can go around criminalizing men's advances to women. Even if those men are married, and even if they look like Glenn Thrush.

Since I'm not going to read the Vox story, are these women with whom he worked or were these reporters at other places who were trying to network?

The first opens the NYT to liability. The second means he's a damn asshole who needed to be kneed in the crotch and, yes, have women call/email/text whatever each other that he's a loser who will try to paw at you if you go out for drinks on what should obviously be a networking interaction.

Look, if these weren't women with whom he was working, he's just an asshole. Now, he may be an asshole who keeps you from getting hired because you didn't let him paw you but, no matter how hard we try, we can't outlaw being an asshole.

95 The point of the "Base System" is that you're never, as a man, more than one step past where the girl feels comfortable at. You can try to touch the boob while you're making out; if she pushes your hand away, okay, called out at second, but at least you were just one step ahead of where she was comfortable.

That's a good way of thinking about it. And the hell of the thing is, if you're passive enough to wait for her to make the move or indicate what she wants next, she's likely not happy with that. She wants you to be the aggressor, to be in charge, to be so swept away with passion you try for more. Even if she doesn't really want it, she wants a guy who is in control at least sometimes. Unless she's a domme, then you get what you paid for.

Dirty little secret is that a lot of it comes from the fairer sex. Anyone who thinks that all women are innocent in the game of corporate politics is not dealing in reality.

But since men have historically been in the "power" position in the corporate world women aren't seen as the issue and their flirting and more is seen as ok. This current hysteria won't end until women start getting dragged into this morass as something other than always innocent victims.

212 Here's the thing in my eyes.

Weinstein didn't whack off in front of women because he "misread the signals"--or he has a wider variety of signals in his book.

If Thrush had a certain type of sexual morality, he should have taken stock of how attracted he was to the journo chick, looked at his wedding ring, and went home to his wife.

The lady I read didn't say that she had few clothes on after tussling with Thrush because he ripped them off, yet nonetheless she said she had few clothes on. So we don't know how many bases Thrush got before he was thrown out at "Aren't you married?"

I was listening to John Heffron on the way in to work, and he mentioned that he never patted himself on the back for a choice made after 1 am. And he's definitely never thanked himself for the choices made after 5 am.

eh like I said there are often two people attempting a fake-friendly relationship each expecting a different end-game.

besides, women flirt for a lot of reasons, including assuaging their own insecurity. women want to be desired more than they actually desire.

also we have a weird culture now where flirtation is almost this default mode of communication. you see that on social media a lot. I think it's weird.

all i know is: never skip bases.

I read this old, old book that I found in my attic when I was a kid. It was like a sex guide for young adults or older teens. It was written in the 50s so it didn't talk about sex.

Anyway, it said something like (remember, this is the 50s): Girls found boys "handsy" not based on how quickly they moved through the bases but based on whether or not they tagged up on each base before moving to the next. Boys that skipped a base got labeled as either "handsy" or creepy. Boys that hit each base in the proper order wouldn't get so branded, even if they moved through the process quickly.

321 >>>Afterward, they (as I did) thought it best to stay on good terms with Thrush, whatever their feelings.

Ace mentions the boilerplate non-apology apology from the accused ("I don't remember anything, but I'm sorry for everything")...

...but this is now becoming boilerplate from the accusers: "I was made uncomfortable / sexually harassed / sexually assaulted / raped, but I decided not to say anything, because I wanted to advance my career in Hollywood / journalism / government / X workplace."

So we have accuser after accuser after accuser who admit to making the decision to choose the advancement of self over turning in a sexual predator.

And I wonder... how many of these females were told to shut up and 'play the game' by so-called women's rights supporters? Those who told women to look the other way about Bill Clinton, because he supported abortion? Ted Kennedy, because he supported abortion? Harvey Weinstein, because he supported abortion? Joe Biden, because he supported abortion?
And on and on and on.

What a sick culture the "women's rights" culture is that they value abortion over stopping sexual predators.

I think *that* is actually the biggest reveal of all of this: seeing all these so-called "women's movement" females admit that they chose protecting the sacrament of abortion over turning in sexual predators. Despicable.

I'm certain I've been subjected to harassment of a sexual nature (my best definition of 'Sexual Harassment') by a woman. But I ignored, I mean totally ignored it every time.

But I'm a foot taller than most women and I never felt threatened by it in the least. Plus, ain't gonna happen unless 'Little' Tractor Seat rises to the occasion. Which none of these women did I have any interest in at all.

Disclosure.

It won't happen when there are parallel systems of punishment against men where Constitutional rights by and protections are taken away.
- Family Courts
- Duluth Model
- VAWA
- Titke IX courts on college campus
- false allegations go unpunished with women
- men cannot be sexually assaulted or raped by a woman
- #MeToo justice tried on social media years after the fact
- the norm of there is no reason to doubt the accuser
- women teachers getting away with banging their students. For every 1 caught 100 to 200 go unreported

The average man is fucked. You have to be a millionaire to have a chance in hell to defend yourself.

I also do not see the Uniparty standing up for men in the near future unless we go full Sharia law by 2050.

Oh, I definitely would. But that's being smart. Being smart is also not walking down city allies, regardless of how permissible it is.

Of course, I'm married and don't work with my wife. So I wouldn't even do that. I generally do the Pence thing, and do not isolate myself with women who are not my wife.

That's also smart. Even though being alone with a woman is by any HR standard, permissible. The current suggestion is that you're some kind of maladjusted perv for even noticing that it's a female that you're alone with--because you're probably assuming her gender anyway.

However, co-workers hook-up, and its consensual--not anywhere I've worked, as far as I know. But it happens. Is it completely impermissible that somebody should date somebody they just happen to work with. I met my wife at a job, btw, and we dated while working there.

The best policy for an employer is like my cube-neighbor. His wife works at for the same company, but they cannot work in the same department. But the policy about how people have to transfer, makes it not a de facto violation of policy to start , but a necessity of continuing to transfer within a certain period.

People knew and careers where ruined if you spoke out.

Weinstein had a list of 100 people on his Hit List and had people employed solely to gather data on them. According to experts he is not the only one who does this. It is very, very difficult to go up against these guys and win.

If the police won't help, you can get buried in court case costs accusing these guys. It is unbelievably disgusting and soul-destroying. And it is not just sexual stuff. Lance Armstrong destroyed peoples' lives that told the truth on him. Think about how many were complicit in that?

That's why women are coming forward in groups. I've even see it in posts here. Well, it is just one person saying something, it's probably not true. Let me tell ya, for all the women who are coming forward, there are just as many not saying anything.

I think men and women working together so much presents a lot of temptations and opportunities that we didn't see 50 years ago.

In any X number of encounters with the opposite sex (or sex you're attracted to), you're going to have Y "clicks" or attractions. A certain fraction of those, Z, are going to be of the mutual type.

The greater the X the greater the number of Zs, where you both dig each other.

And resistance to temptation will only last so long.

not saying we have to go back to women being house-bound, but there are downsides to every major change in modes of living.

Check out Crazy Days and Nights. It's a gossip blog by someone in Hollywood who really does know his shit.

Did you know Don Henley raped a couple of underage girls back in 1980? That he fed them lots of drugs and one of them almost died from an overdose?

It's on his wikipedia as a minor charge of deliquency of a minor but apparently the situation was much, much worse. He took pictures of them too.

According to that site, Jerry Brown helped him cover up the worst parts of it. Also one of the girls later died of an overdose and the other girl swiped some of the polaroids at the scene and kept them. She's now the wife of a politician in California and she's going to expose the whole sordid ordeal.

Dunno about that last part, but the first part pretty much fits the situation. I mean, I believe it. We've seen and heard these stories many times.

You can find all sorts of sad facts about these broken people on that site. It's amazing how fucked up it all is.
