The close up on the image shows a wonderful handling of the faces. He doesn't have that over-stylized thing going, each face is an individual.
I would ask if that was taken from a photo, but if it was, he redid it because even in the 1880s the film wasn't so fast to take a snapshot unposed. That spray of leaves in the upper right corner is a nice touch in framing the scene too. Looking briefly at the pics of the works at the wiki page, Kroyer was taken with portraying deep focus three dimensional depth in his work, and he loved that oblique angle used in this painting, and worked really well with very deep scenes. It is possible to make decent pictures with a camera, but you need a good eye for composition to make a very good picture. I really don't have that skill, so I would play with very shallow focus to make what I wanted to stand out from the composition. I used to have a girlfriend who had that eye for well composed deep shots, but couldn't figure out how to use a camera exactly. When we went for walks she would spot the shots and I would shoot them. Surstromming -- take some fish pieces, put it in a can with some salt water. Seal can, but do not process with any heat. In a few months, when can is bulging but before the seams give up, open can and "enjoy". Most airlines will not carry cans of surstromming because the internal pressure is enough to blow the cans open at altitude. Posted by: Rob Crawford at November 22, 2017 09:53 AM (6xy6b) 86

"Actually he is the one who is turning over all the
information that was held by the Obama administration. What is coming out now is because the information is no longer being hidden. It remains to be seen what he knew or didn't know and whether Mueller told the complete truth to the Armed Services Committee or if he withheld information. In any case, Congress had no power to stop this deal it was all in the hands of the Obama administration. Posted by: JackStraw Listening to Tom Fitton with Judicial Watch (and the Hannity guests like Sara Carter) my impression is they have been delayed and have to sue for info that is kept hidden. They have denied things that are now exposed, and only then does some (limited) action happen, and that itself may be part of the slow walking. It would be nice to believe otherwise, and Sara says they will have a "special team" (not Mueller) to investigate. But we have to see if it is "special coverup" or special like agents that complained about this the whole time but were overruled. this is zero hedge, which sometimes takes a walk on the wild side, but this sums up the "Sessions/DoJ running interference" subject. http://tinyurl.com/y7kgnokp Posted by: illiniwek at November 22, 2017 09:55 AM (/aIFg) 98

There's a German-Polish meat shop (unfortunately named Adolf's, sheesh) here that makes their own sausages.
Counter woman offers me liverwurst, which I try out of politeness, and it is absolutely to die for. I like liverwurst but it's kind of bland, just a nice texture to be dressed up with onions and mustard. This stuff is sublime and flavorful in a way I hadn't expected, and the point of this anecdote is that it was too soft to slice. It was a spread. But yeah, you can make a great pate' or sausage out of liver and other organ meats and also out of hooves and snouts and ears and the squeak. Scrapple tastes good, sausage tastes good. All sausage from every culture is a way of making sure that the scraps of the animal do not go to waste. Posted by: Bandersnatch at November 22, 2017 10:00 AM (gIRsn) 109

To this day, the only thing I refuse to eat is Brussels Spouts and stuffed bell peppers.
I used to hate those too! But the costco stuffed bell peppers are actually good (not bland like all the others I've had). The stuffed bell peppers was mom's favorite. My only complaint was that it should have been a side and WHERE'S THE MEAT? I always saw SBP as a side dish. I was too young to understand about it being mom's favorite and all the times she sacrificed by not fixing it. By the time I realized it, I was out and on my own. I enjoy these domestic scenes that Scandinavian artists of this period do so well. The play of light is always appropriate to the scene. In this case the sunlight shining through the leaves brings out the shad they provide and is captured in the raised glasses, which keeps the focus on the celebratory nature of the painting. There is plenty of color but it doesn't overwhelm the feeling that Kroyer wants to portray. It is all very pleasant. I bet it was looked at with smiles and longing during those dark Danish winters.
I admit I like these domestic scenes that these Nordic artists do. Technically brilliant and ever pleasing to view. From our perspective it is a window onto the world before the cultural disasters of WW I and later in the 20th century. Posted by: JTB at November 22, 2017 10:23 AM (V+03K) 206

I wish Trump never got into the tweeting thing about the basketball players. Some of the tweets have been cringe-inducing. That said, I understand why he started it. How many Americans even realized that he "negotiated" their release? The media is not going to say anything that may make him look good. So he tooted his own horn. But he should have backed off after he mentioned it once. To get involved with a fucking jerkoff like LeVar Bell is counterproductive.

Trump joked once about how vicious real estate could be, and that politics was even worse.
I don't think he wants to be loved, but he is at the top tier of power and the lies and deceit of the left are their main weapon at the moment. He probably hates that doing good things gets so viciously attacked ... but he has had the cocktail party types hate him before ... he seems to brush that off. I almost never go to Bed, Bath and Beyond unless it's for something for the church. On All Saints Sunday we did the terrible, awful Catholic thing (J/K ;^) ) of lighting candles in memory of the Saints-Which St Paul defines as followers of Christ-not just canonized Saints-who have gone to be with the Lord and who let their light shine while on earth. I went to B, B and B for candles. I am the least craft oriented person i know and getting little things for house just doesn't happen very often. I hate shopping-period. Several weeks ago I went to a brunch for volunteers for our local Farmer's Market. the woman have lovely little embroidered towels in her restroom and everything in her beautiful house was tastefullycoordinated . Fenelon, Thanks for your kind words. I'm never sure how my straight arrow comments about the art will play with all the snark and humor. (And this thread brings out some funny stuff.) In case I forget for the next book thread, I've been thumbing through "That Nothing May Be Lost" by Father Paul Scalia. He's the son of the late Justice and delivered that beautiful and touching eulogy. The man is a gifted writer and brings, by my admittedly low standards, wonderful insight into aspects of Christianity. The orientation is Roman Catholic but I believe it would appeal to many Christians. Hope everyone has a blessed Thanksgiving. Posted by: JTB at November 22, 2017 10:59 AM (V+03K) 369

hmmm, this may be a good opener for Worst Thanksgiving EVER: Mine is the November after my mom passed away. She made the best Italian fusion Turkey day dinner, just outstanding. So the first holiday after her death my brother and I couldn't bear to go to anyone else's house that day. We went to a restaurant, not knowing they served the most disgusting slop they called dinner. Honestly, I don't know how they got away with it. That was the worst Thanksgiving for me. >>> Is anyone here doing Friendsgiving? Is that a millennial thing?
Maybe? If I was far away from family I'd do that. I found out one of my friends was going to be spending Thanksgiving evening alone and was dreading it. This cannot stand! So she's spending the eve with us instead. So kind of a Friendsgiving. I am so grateful for her being in my life. What DOES seem to be a millennial trend is the local grocery stores providing the whole meal, cooked and ready to go. So many of my friends are doing this. One pointed out it is always delicious, it comes out to less than $10 for a family of five, and your kitchen stays clean. Makes sense in a way! But I do worry certain traditions will die off, like Thanksgiving meal prep, because my generation is too lazy to continue them. Posted by: LizLem at November 22, 2017 11:04 AM (hvf9s) 388

Posted by: kallisto at November 22, 2017 10:59 AM (kD8Fh) Same here. My mom died in October eight years ago while our son was a boot camp. He wasn't able to attend her funeral, and the whole time was awful. I had planned to do something simple for us and a few close friends, but we were invited to a couple's house we're not really close to, and husband insisted we go. The wife isn't a cook at all, and had bought a dried out pre-cooked turkey breast and a few slices of dried out ham. A friend of hers made a gelatinous dressing that was actually bright green and reeked of pure dried sage. I made a sweet potato casserole that their teenaged daughters wouldn't eat because Calories. It really made me miss my mother a million times more. I vowed then and there I'd never give up doing the holiday myself again. Posted by: Jane D'oh at November 22, 2017 11:05 AM (ZRC8N) 391

So they're conjuring up former cops after former 15 year-olds struck out. I'm still curious as to whose money is funding this; dems or Mitch. And even if true, why would this matter after the Beautiful People have once again said that a ravening dog that kills the innocent for fun is good at sniffing out rabbits, so we must keep him? --- The whole squad of cheerleaders? Seems legit. Posted by: Methos at November 22, 2017 11:13 AM (XQvuQ) Searching the internet takes you to what looks like a left-wing hack site with a video embed from an MSNBC Andrea Mitchell interview with an alleged retired Gadsden female cop. If they require some type of protection, that seems like a criminal act, right? .. Nope. But if my make coach and make headmaster noticed a 32 year old stranger hanging out around my girls' basketball team at a game, they would have seen to it that the stranger un-assed the campus.
