Quotes of The Day

Quote I

Over the years, I developed a fail-safe cure. Basically, I’d mix four tablespoons of brandy with four tablespoons of port, throw in some milk, a few egg yolks, and — if I was in a festive mood — some nutmeg. The second I woke, I’d mix it up and down it. The way it works is very clever: it gets you instantly blasted again, so you don’t feel a thing. The only drawback is that, unless you keep drinking, the hangover that eventually catches up with you is about a thousand times worse than it would have otherwise been. Ozzie Osbourne

Quote II

“Personally, I’ve begun to feel that my Second Amendment rights are being violated. I was promised the right to a well-regulated militia, and instead I see a nation that falls victim, week after week, body after body, to a series of unstable people with elaborately hoarded arsenals. I am absolutely sure our founders would be appalled. I am absolutely sure that our founders would not wish that we run out and buy even more guns because of it.” – Tess Tayor

Quote III

“There can be 12 white, blue-eyed, blond men in a room and they’re going to be diverse too because they’re going to bring a different life experience and life perspective to the conversation,”Denise Young Smith

OH NO! Stopping the flow of carbon dioxide is not enough, it has to be sucked out of the atmosphere as well.

The Paris agreement assumes, in effect, that the world will find ways to suck CO2 out of the air. That is because, in any realistic scenario, emissions cannot be cut fast enough to keep the total stock of greenhouse gases sufficiently small to limit the rise in temperature successfully. But there is barely any public discussion of how to bring about the extra “negative emissions” needed to reduce the stock of CO2 (and even less about the more radical idea of lowering the temperature by blocking out sunlight). Unless that changes, the promise of limiting the harm of climate change is almost certain to be broken.

Damned if they do. Damned if they don't. Police come under fire for using their body cams to assist them in writing reports.

The number of U.S. police departments outfitting their officers with body cameras increases each year, but the cameras can pose a threat to civil rights if the departments fail to set rules that govern when officers review footage from their cameras, according to a new report.

The vast majority of the nation’s biggest police departments allow officers to watch footage from body cameras whenever they want, including before they write their incident reports or make statements, said the report, which was released Tuesday by the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.

Where did you get your drivers license? Sears? No, the US Navy.

For the 5th time this year, a US warship belonging to the 7th Fleet has been involved in a crash. The guided missile destroyer USS Benfold collided with a Japanese tug boat in Sagami Bay. Damage to the warship is unkown and there were no injuries on either vessel.

A thousand here, a thousand there, pretty soon you're talking millions of dollars Millions paid by "us" to settle Swamp sexual harassment claims.

Over the past 20 years, the fund paid over $17.2 million to settle workplace complaints, according to a document released (pdf, p.2) Nov. 15 by OOC executive director Susan Tsui Grundmann. Grundmann wrote in a letter that she had decided to share a report of yearly payments made by the fund due to “the volume of recent inquiries regarding payment of awards and settlements.”

The report shows two two outstanding figures in 2007 and 2012, with about $4 million paid in each case. The year 2012 stands out especially as a year when larger settlements were made: The 4 million dollars were divided between 12 cases, while in 2007 the same amount was divided across 25 of settlements.

I think we have the right to know who.

Just an idea, lower your resident's taxes instead of playing naming games.

With winter fast approaching in the UK, local councils are gearing up for the annual task of keeping the roads moving with salt and grit. And what better way to prepare than adding two gritting lorries to the fleet?

That’s what Doncaster council is doing – with the added twist of asking the public this week to help name the newcomers.

Voting has reached the final stage and Twitter users are choosing between Spready Mercury and Gritsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Anti-slip Machiney and Basil Salty and David Plowie.

The old typical good news/bad news story. Sex and death.

Fewer than one in five men who suffer a cardiac arrest during sex survive, according to new research.
This is because their partner does not know how to perform a simple, life saving technique, say scientists.
It underlines the importance of teaching CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) to the general population, they warned.
Sex is known to trigger a sudden cardiac arrest and this causes the heart to suddenly stop beating. It usually occurs without warning.

Do the Amish hold the key to a longer life? Anti-aging gene found.

They arrived by horse and buggy, a parade of Old Order Amish, tied together by blood and soil and a shared history of having farmed the countryside around Berne, Ind., for almost 175 years. Many had never been to a doctor before. A few would later faint at the sight of their own blood, as a battery of doctors and nurses from Northwestern Medicine in Chicago set up camp in their community; pricking them with needles, collecting urine samples, capturing images of their hearts and testing the hunch of Dr. Douglas Vaughan, a cardiologist at Northwestern, that the Amish of Berne were the lucky holders of an anti-aging gene.

Bad news for beer drinkers. Doctors blame beer for gout flare ups.

Beer, and not its more fancy cousins in the alcohol world, is more likely to be a cause of the common but painful condition.

And contrary to popular myth, spirits are less likely to contribute to gout, while wine is shown to have no link with the disease.

In finally proving what many had thought for years - that gout is linked to alcohol consumption - American researchers have calculated that drinking two or three beers a day can increase the risk of developing the disorder by as much as two-and-a-half times.

There is good reason for requiring cops to write their reports before the video shows them what lies they can get away with and which lies won't fly. If they are writing an honest report, they should need to check the video first. Just write it the way they remember it.

60 Sorry Tess, you were not promised the "right" to a well regulated Militia, only that one is necessary to the security of a free state.

What you, and all of us, were promised is that we have the right to keep, that means own and have available to us personally where ever we want, and bear, that means carry on our persons or as part of our baggage, arms. Arms Tess which includes the class of arms called firearms but also includes many others like knives, swords, spears etc.

If this promise had not been so thoroughly broken over so many years then all those people whose deaths you morn would have had the ability to defend themselves and others from the monsters which will always lurk in humanity.

By breaking that promise the monsters are still armed and we, the good people, are often not and so we die Tess. And what you want will cause blood to be on your hands too Tess. Our blood on your hands. It won't wash away either, lady.

77 I was reading a book about 55 Cancri and its high carbon planets. Apparently heavy carbon content in the protoplanetary disc sucks out the oxygen, and the hydrogen escapes.

So not much ice in the inner or even close-outer regions. Although some ice might survive out in the comet belts.

Life that evolves on such planets might be interesting. I'm guessing a carbon-heavy planet could get it, if a comet landed and dumped some water there after most of the planet had already formed.

So: a planet with runaway plant growth, perhaps?

The same way traffic jams form in LA etc.: there are a limited number of routes for ships to follow. I've read that a lot of the Gulf of Mexico is very shallow (ca. 14 feet, IIRC), and the former Navy base in Puerto Rico (Vieques?) was situated there as it commands a deep water route, i.e., a choke point, in that area.

We tend to think that a ship can sail anywhere. Not true.

The bio-availability of iron is often the limiting feature in microbial growth, because Fe(III) at neutral pH - essentially rust - is not very available (the solubility product is very low, ca. 10^-40, IIRC).

As a consequence, many microorganisms have evolved ways of solubilizing Fe(III), such as ferrichrome and enterobactin. Conversely, humans have evolved human serum transferrin to sequester iron away from bacteria as a way of fighting septicemia.

255 Yet the most damaging thing about America's renewed spasm of climate-change rejection may not be the effect on its own emissions, which could turn out to be negligible. It is the cover America has given other countries to avoid acknowledging the problems of the agreement America is abandoning.

========

The takeaways: a) This deal that we MUST join lest the world be destroyed, would have had a negligible effect on our emissions. b) By pulling out of the deal, America is responsible for the bad behavior of other countries, in much the same way that Republicans by appointing Clarence Thomas are responsible for Bill Clinton's history of sexual abuse.

Turned on one of the local AM news channels about ten minutes ago, and they were reporting that both the CA Assembly and State Senate are taking action against members (one in each body) that have been accused of sexually harrassing women. I didn't catch the names of the politicians. But the guy in the Assembly is being stripped of his positions, and the State Senate is launching a Third-Party investigation of their guy.

meat eating is problematic in terms of the environment, animal welfare, and human health. One mechanism through which one of those concerns can be eliminated - and the others potentially mitigated - is to remove animals from the equation.

This week saw the world's first international conference on the industrial manufacture of meat. Arguably, that is what the beef, pork, and chicken industries already do but, in this case, the meat is to be grown in industrial bioreactors instead of inside animals that are subsequently killed.

359 Hmmmm. I thought pastrami was corned beef with pepper and spices added to the curing process. So basically, pastrami is improved corned beef.

Pastrami is culturally Jewish and corned beef is culturally Irish and I'm ethnically Irish so I should root for my team but I can't get away from the fact that improved corned beef has the word "improved" in it.

Then one of you rapscallions mentioned that there's no such thing as pastrami hash, which is a good point because corned beef hash is proof that God loves us.

I may tell a story about corned beef hash which reflects poorly on my character, or I may keep it to myself and pretend that I'm not an asshole. It's the internet, I might be a dog.

This is a meditation. Don't construe this as a vote for either side. Pastrami vs. corned beef is very important and I'm going to need some time with this.

453 So, a million years ago I was married and living in Germany.

I'm all about the multi-kulti and I loved living abroad but there were times when I was dying for a good American diner. I kept thinking I was missing them, because how can you have a whole country without a diner? It didn't make sense.

And I especially wanted corned beef hash.

So the time came to move home and we were having a going away thing with friends that my wife had made and I was late to it. I was late because I was saying goodbye to my girlfriend (I told you this story was going to reflect poorly on my character).

When I did show up my wife said hey you're too late, we had corned beef hash and it's gone.

Her friends were rich. I didn't even question it. Rich people can get things that normal people can't. It didn't occur to me that I'd lived in the country for three years and never seen corned beef at any price.

Hah, I wasn't even thinking of the Ba-Tampte pickle, I had in mind the mustard.

Ba-Tampte products are like hen's teeth around here anyway, but we can get some other decent never-saw-vinegar half-sours so I get the fresh refrigerated local ones. If I find a Ba-Tampte trove at a local shop I usually just sweep all the mustard and pickled green tomatoes off the shelf into my basket.

518 Anybody heard about some version of the following fraud?

A Chinese company purchases the lab space and equipment of a defunct technical company in the United States. They initially hire locals and just send a few Chinese middle managers and technical people. The locals have trouble following the Chinese corporate documents and procedures, which are Byzantine, inefficient, partly in Chinese, poorly translated and poorly explained.

The Chinese company eventually send more managers, who
begin to complain about the supposed incompetence of the local work force. A stream of Chinese "former employees" of the company are brought in from Canada; one could reasonably suspect they are former in name only, having travelled to Canada and stayed just long enough to become a citizen, then immediately moved down to the U.S. to take all new jobs as the company expands. Note: It's extremely easy for Canadian citizens to get jobs in the U. S.

The locals are eventuall all forced out for being 'unsuitable' and the Chinese company has effectively moved part of their workforce to the United States. No jobs for Americans, just colonization by China.

Anybody?

begin to complain about the supposed incompetence of the local work

brought in from Canada; one could reasonably suspect they are former in
name only, having travelled to Canada and stayed just long enough to
become a citizen, then immediately moved down to the U.S. to take all
new jobs as the company expands. Note: It's extremely easy for Canadian
citizens to get jobs in the U. S.

The locals are eventuall all forced out for being 'unsuitable' and

579 Get some really good corned beef, sliced not too thin. Put 12 ounces of it into a foil pouch.

Do the same with 12 ounces of drained sauerkraut. Preheat the oven to 300.

Stick both pouches in the oven seams up so you don't get drippy in there.

On a griddle, take four slices of jewish marble rye buttered one face, grill them butter side down until nicely browned.

Take the pouches out of the oven. Spread russian dressing thinly on the not-grilled sides of the bread, then build the sandwiches. Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, corned beef, cheese again.

Put the built sandwiches on a cookie sheet and then into the oven for 6 or 7 minutes.

Enjoy your reubens.

Yorkshire pudding is primarily a vehicle for the delivery of gravy.

Here in Alberta, the large Ukrainian community makes kielbasa, pronounced "koobaSAW" , which is a very yummy sausage.

Long, long ago, in a land faraway, I worked morning room service at a semi-fancy hotel where Della stayed for a couple of nights.

I hastened to say I would replace it but she laughed it off, "Honey, I'm not eating the peel!"
But she did not tip me.

The next morning, her last, I kept the orange under perfect control. "Don't you let that rascal get away!" she said. And she gave me a twenty, which was a yuuuuuge tip back then.

714 Firefox has some 'quirks' in the comment box here at ace. Just ignore what it looks like, make sure your tags are correct. and it comes out ok.

Firefox without noscript, I mean, has quirks in the comment box.

This instant, this is firefox, private window, with noscript on a non-admin local user account and it is quirkless.

Something about new HTML codes require a rewrite of noscript. so I'm not at all sure why this instance of the new Firefox is running the old noscript. There was a 'work around' but I didn't do it.

Posted by: Zettai Ryoiki at November 21, 2017 01:37 AM (e9G8E)

Using Pale Moon right now. It works like the older versions of Firefox, from which it evolved. The older versions of Firefox without the cruft. It enables one to copy over their Firefox "profile", albeit with a little jiggery-pokery, renaming files and whatnot. Which means you get to keep your bookmarks and toolbars. Of course they nag me to update, and I continually refuse, until such time I get word around the 'net that the upgrade is both safe and desirable.
I did run Brave in another laptop, and liked right fine.

Interesting.
Firefox and Google Chrome have a new 'service' called 'pocket'. If you find something on the web of interest to you, you can then 'save' that web page to 'Pocket' where your saving of the page is a measure of your interest and they can then recommend that page to others, or other similar pages to you.

Something similar to Facebook Likes, or the web site Stumble Upon.

Firefox, Google, and Microsoft are really pushing this save your stuff to the internet cloud.

730 They use a standard proportional voting system with preferences. Voters note their candidate preferences from one until the end of the list, if the voter wants. If the first preference doesn't make the cut (low vote getter), they go to the next preference.

I realize we're talking about a senate here.

But thinking about this as an abstract system, if this method were used here in the US to elect members to the House of Representatives by state, it would totally eliminate gerrymandering. The disadvantage would be that any particular representative wouldn't be closely tied to the interests of a particular locale.

739 I had crab legs a month ago and throughly enjoyed it. The only problem with them is they're a lot of work for not much meat.

The other issue with shellfish is that you'd better wrap up the shells in a plastic bag before you put them in the trash. I forget to do so with the crab shells and the next morning I gagged when I walked in the kitchen.

Posted by: Donna&&&&V baby, it's cold outside at November 20, 2017 11:51 PM (P8951)

One of my favorite meals is to take a flounder fillet, then top it with long strips of meat from crab legs, then top it with a little mozzarella cheese, then put another flounder fillet on top. Maybe drip a little white wine between layers. Bake, lightly covered with alum foil for about 40 minutes. Serves two, maybe only one.

It solves the problem of so little meat from the crab legs. The flounder picks up the crab flavor and is very filling.

And yes, trash gets stinky and a raccoon will probably visit before trash pickup day.

Mozzarella on fish???? I really like flounder pretty much prepared any way, although I'm now partial to sautéed sole, but mozzarella?

In the immortal words of Nancy Regan: Just say NO!

As for shrimp shells and crab shells, make a stock before you toss them out. You can make a nice cream sauce with it or, as I like to do, add some shrimp stock to the tomato sauce when making shrimp (and green olives) with pasta. I'll even add some shrimp stock to the pasta water.

ATSupply, is this the 'grit' of which you speak?

Brown butter, or beurre noisette, is widely used in restaurant kitchens to bring a rich, nutty note to dishes. It's made by heating butter until the milk solids brown: as the butter cooks, little flecks of brown will appear in the melted yellow liquid. This happens because once butterfat climbs above 266 F / 130 C, its natural lactose sugar and its casein and whey proteins undergo the flavor-creating Maillard reaction. Here, we whisk skim milk powder into the butter to add extra sugar and protein to the butterfat, improving the yield of nutty brown flecks.

Yeah, that's probably better. I just read the Wiki (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarified_butter) and didn't realize that if you're making your own, when you melt regular butter, some of the solids rise, while some sink.

780 JBT, I roast a few peppers. Then I place them in a covered glass container to 'sweat' so the skin rubs off easily when cooled. I place the cleaned pepper pieces in a bowl or saucepan and use a stick blender to puree, adding a little water if need be. Then I add the sliced olives and capers until the sauce has the right chunky consistency to my sight/taste. It also freezes well which is why I make a large batch when I do make it.

I 'stole' that sauce (from memory) from an Italian restaurant I used to frequent. All I know about my version is that it does taste great. Pretty simple to make with easily found ingredients. Just don't use those canned black olives because they taste like cardboard.
