Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“I believe in a lot of things but the first tenet of my politics is to hold up the people who have held me up, who have filled my world with love.” Lena Dunham.

Quote II

“It is a privilege that we allow individuals to hold onto something that causes harm and death,” “It is a privilege to have a car license, it is a privilege to have a gun license.” Representative Marjorie Decker

Quote III

If you truly wanna boycott the NFL and you wanna boycott ESPN, the notion that some guy sitting out there, or gal, and they decide, 'you know what, I'm gonna cut my entire cable package because ESPN gave an award on a made-up show in July because there's no sports, to a woman who used to be a man, so I'm now not gonna have any cable TV at all and I'm gonna sit around at night and read books by candlelight like olden times because of that,' that's not happening. And if you did that, then you're so dumb that I can't even pray for you because you're beyond hope. If that was your reaction to this, was to deny yourself the ability to watch television, I mean that just hasn't happened and didn't happen, so I boycott them. Scott Van Pelt

Quote IV

“Listen, I’ve honored you by allowing you to spout off here and what you said was not right. That’s all I’m saying. I come from the lower-middle class originally. We didn’t have anything, so don’t spew that stuff on me. I get a little tired of that crap. And let me just say something — if we worked together, we could pull this country out of every mess it’s in, and we could do a lot of the things that you’re talking about, too, and I think I’ve got a reputation of having worked together with Democrats,” Sen. Orin hosta (R-UT)

Apple and their iPhone are in the news again. And it's not their newest model. TX LEO serve warrants on Apple.

Authorities in Texas served Apple with a search warrant in order to gain access to the Sutherland Springs church shooter's cellphone files.

Texas Ranger Kevin Wright obtained the warrant last week, according to San Antonio Express-News.

Investigators are hoping to gain access to gunman Devin Patrick Kelley's digital photos, messages, calls, videos, social media passwords, address book and data since January 2016. Authorities also want to know what files Kelley stored in his iCloud account.

Jerry Jones must prevail against Roger Goodell.

Roger Goodell inexplicably received a nod of approval from all 32 owners of NFL teams back in May. Those owners, whether buoyed by ratings or the decline in quarterback play or forcing good citizens such as myself into supporting the Patriots in the Super Bowl, said, “Yes, we’re on the right track here,” and voted to extend his contract.

Now one of those owners is backtracking. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has launched a salvo against the commissioner. Jones is reportedly demanding the contract extension be sent back to the Compensation Committee for “possible adjustment.” Failing that, there may be a lawsuit on the horizon. As reported by Peter King at Sports Illustrated, Goodell’s previous contract contained too much guaranteed compensation. The new contract attempts to address that. Jones’ concern is that the remedies are too nebulous.

A really cold "Cold Case File". The murder of Rodney Marks.

No one at the Amundsen-Scott station believed that the results of the autopsy would be particularly shocking. The National Science Foundation, which governs all U.S.-based research at the station, issued a statement announcing that Marks had died of natural causes. So when the results came back that Marks had been poisoned with methanol, panic arose.

Oh, they realize it, but they're putting on a brave face.

ESPN has a new SportsCenter on Snapchat show. Yes, really. I guess they're trying to appeal to kids who don't know what television is.

Anyways, a few days ago, they used printouts of two football players on sticks to "reenact" the MNF football game.

Why? Despite paying TWO BILLION DOLLAR PER YEAR, ESPN's NFL contract does not grant them rights to stream video clips online.

If you watch Pardon the Interruption or Around the Horn re-broadcasts in their phone app, then you'll notice the same thing. Video clips during those shows are replaced with still photo slideshows.

Candles aren't even a primary backup for most of us. That's for when the generator and batteries run out. I don't watch cable at all, and even if I stopped reading books, there would be more entertainment opportunities than I could use in a lifetime, many deliverable though the internet. 89 Been watching Punisher on Netflix.

The good -

They briefly mock hipsters and manbuns

The bad -

Stereotypical pro-2nd Amendment Christian redneck vet

Very mentally troubled white vet who built a foxhole in his Dad's backyard to sleep in and accidentally took a shot at his Dad (missed, fortunately), but apparently isn't doing anything for his mental health aside from attending a Vets group meeting (that he says isn't helping). Oh, and he's being influenced by the redneck (who probably doesn't realize just how close the guy is to flipping out).

Female Iranian-American Homeland Security agent seeking to uncover criminal secrets being kept by her white male superiors (I don't know if it's been stated whether she was born in the US or Iran, but she grew up speaking Farsi as well as English).

A PMC that hasn't been shown to be evil yet. But there was a hint in the last episode I watched, which pretty much guarantees that it is because Hollywood always makes PMCs evil.

Less violence and a lower body count than either Daredevil series at the same point. Seriously, WTH? Punisher should *never* have a lower body count than Daredevil.

If you ask for $20/month, almost anybody can do the math in their head and say "hmm, that's $240 a year; that's a lot of money." But the yearly total for $19/month takes a few seconds of actual thinking to compute so a lot of folks won't.

120 In case it hasn't been mentioned yet, the talks to put together a governing coalition in Germany failed today and the country is possibly headed for a snap election.

Lots of sticking points, but a big one was the Green Party refused to back a deal that would have limited the flood of "refugees" to only 200,000 a year; *unless* members of those 200,000 were allowed to bring in family members later.

Germany is screwed.

Posted by: T at November 19, 2017 10:33 PM (MmeCn)

121 Bottom line, there's gonna be a huge shift in sports broadcasting in the next few years.

The major sports leagues now have their own "network channels" with large, high quality production staffs, and good on-screen talent, most of whom they've stolen from ESPN as they've cut staff.

Five years ago, leagues could barely do one show a day, and it looked like cable access. Now they can fill 24 hours a day without breaking a sweat.

Worse, ESPN is now re-broadcasting a daily MLB produced talk show that originally airs on MLB Network, replacing ESPN's old daily Baseball Tonight show, which has been reduced to Sunday nights only.

Honestly, if you're a fan, then you'll get better MLB and NHL highlights directly from the leagues than ESPN or any other sports network; same goes for games with their league wide video streaming apps.

It's only a matter of time until the NFL and NBA make things too expensive for ESPN to keep cornering the market on those two sports.

157 You Rhapsody fans, don't forget there is the Concerto in F, "Second Rhapsody."

Gershwin cut a lot of piano rolls. Some were on a true reproducing piano (imagine that!), others, not. So you have to be careful in selecting the recording but, it's a miracle. You can hear Gershwin play Gershwin.

Starting with the opening clarinet gliss, and then sprinkled right through all the major piano works, there's all this evidence that culture was getting appropriated in both directions, back in those dark ages. There is an awful lot of Klesmer in jass, and the surviving French impressionists outright copied jazz sounds while developing some augmentations and diminutions of chord structure that got used a lot, forming the bridge from stomp to swing band.

When I was a lad we used to give some credit it "Ferd" Grofe, too, who did the original orchestral chart and had some fine compositions of his own.

I watched one episode and called it quits. Yes, we have the hispanic kid joining the all white, evil, and criminal construction workers. Plus the other stuff you mentioned. I guess tanking the comic books isn't enough. It's time to tank the Netflix series. That being said, I haven't been impressed with the Marvel Netflix series. Of course, Disney may start tanking them on purpose since Disney is starting their own streaming service.

182 Have always pretty much loathed Jerry Jones but he seems like one of the few voices of sanity in the NFL. He also instituted a policy/program that gives Cowboys players no excuse to drive while drinking.

Talked to a guy who spoke with an NFL player. He says most older players do not like the protests but do not speak out because they will be ostracized by the rest of the team.

Nice commercial tonight featuring an NFL player talking positively about veterans. One flyover video. No in game mention of protests, etc.

Maybe some gurus are getting the word that a lot of folks are not happy with Kaepernickitis.

212 @149: "The same is coming for college ball. The major conferences don't need ESPN."

Agreed. ESPN's three tentpoles are the NFL, NCAA football, and the NBA. They really don't have much else anymore.

They won't be able to afford Monday Night Football again in a few years. There's a good chance one of the big tech companies like Apple, Google, Netflix, Amazon, etc., will make a play for those games, and the NFL sees those companies as "more equal partners" than lowly ESPN or even Disney.

So, ESPN won't have any actual NFL game broadcasts, and worse, the NFL will bleed them dry for highlights alone. Terrible negotiating position.

College football is a little more complicated. Lots of the current college conference channels are actually co-produced by ESPN, and it's questionable how many, if any, are independently profitable at this point.

Conferences could partner with some of the major regional sports networks instead. Fox owns a bunch and so does NBC. There are plenty of big independent companies in that sphere too.

No spoiler, but I had to look up something. If, when you see Superman's mouth, you think it looks CGI, that's because it is. They had to reshoot and it ran long. Henry Cavill had already started production on Mission Impossible 6, and had to grow a mustache for it. Paramount said "too bad" to WB for needing him back to reshoot, and they forbade him from shaving his stache. So they had to CGI it out. Mystery solved.

Did you not read what I said? There are games already on all, or many of those other networks already. The suggestion was made about doing deals with regional networks, but, at least where I am, the regional networks are either a) garbage quality or b) already have games being shown on them.

Unless you are willing to tell the teams currently televised on SEC Network that they are being kicked off so the SEC network can televise Alabama/Auburn, I just don't think that will fly. You could do what is currently done with the NFL, and only show certain games in certain areas. But, many people want to watch all the games, not just the ones in their area.

You might be right, and honestly, ESPN being "nationwide leader in college football" wouldn't be an awful thing for them, just smaller than "worldwide leader of sports."

It depends on where college football goes in the next decade. They'll want to expand the playoffs to eight teams. The NCAA might not be comfortable giving all those games to ESPN alone anymore.

Bigger question is whether the big conference television and streaming channels are rock solid "partners in ownership" agreements or just licensing agreements. I'll have to dig around for more information on that.

318 @287: "Internet speeds and equipment would have to be more widespread and flawless in a big way before sports via streaming service will really take off."

Very true, but honestly, we're less than five years away from mobile phone streaming being faster, more stable, and more widespread than traditional phone and cable services.

The bigger question is how mobile companies will form agreements with content providers to manage download speeds and data caps. That's the whole Net Neutrality thing.

I downgraded my Comcast service to internet only last week. I'm doing Live TV streaming tests this month and next. Most services aren't as flawless as actual cable, but they're good enough. The problem is they chew up huge download totals.

But, in theory, Comcast could say they've partnered with Netflix, and those streams won't count against my monthly quota.

Or T-Mobile, who already gives away free MLB.tv season passes to their customers might say the same thing about baseball streams; won't count against data caps.

Brave new world coming soon.

327 honestly, we're less than five years away from mobile phone streaming being faster, more stable, and more widespread than traditional phone and cable services.

The issue here is that the more information you pack into a transmission, the higher frequency/ shorter wavelength. And those don't pass through walls real well.

So you have to put transmitters around your home or businesses have to put transmitters around THEIR establishments, to move those signals into high bandwidth Series Of Tubes.

Be interesting to see how they work out the engineering . . .

In the UK they experimented in putting in short range receivers/repeaters in customers' homes to avoid laying phone cable, and to allow the use of frequencies that were not otherwise useful for phone and data communication because of obstruction.

No idea what happened with that, but it probably is not more expensive than my local phone company that put in fiber and then put a large battery in every customer's home to power the system.

343 @322: "I don't like the idea of NFL Network or MLB Network carrying most of or even the most important games."

Baseball is a good example. They makes tons and tons of money from regional sports networks. That's how they can afford giving players those nine figure contracts. You'd never know it by listening to sports pundits though. They keep saying baseball is dying, and yes, nationally, it's not as strong as it used to be, but regionally, it's stronger than ever.

Baseball's streaming technology (MLB Advanced Media) is way ahead of everyone else too. They actually power the backend for ESPN's streaming app and HBO too. Yes, HBO. Weird, I know.

They offer you both home and away broadcasts for each game. They have much better blackout rules than football, and beginning last year, you can actually stream live games in market. They offer condensed games after broadcast that remove commercials and any breaks in game action. You can go back and watch any game from the entire season.

Again, it's becoming a brave new world for all these guys; big leagues, content producers, network distributors, etc. Topsy turvy stuff. Some leagues will handle it better than others. Some networks will too.

358 @327: "Be interesting to see how they work out the engineering . . ."

It's funny 'cause AT&T used to offer in-home repeaters for mobile users in weak signal areas. You'd hook them up to your internet service. It wasn't a good solution though. The tech wasn't quite there yet, unstable, there were wonky regulation issues too, and of course, you had to buy the repeater, and it wasn't cheap.

I'd guess there will be more "mesh network" type technologies going forward. Fewer big signal towers in urban and suburban areas. More small radius transmitters that work cooperatively. The technology is evolving quickly.

Saturday night, my orchestra had a more traditional program, with another guest conductor, great big young fella with a lot of Viking vigor. And he turns out to be the regular conductor at...Calgary, Alberta.

Alberta has over 4 million people, so I can understand supporting several orchestras. Bet the road trips are grueling though, in Medicine Hat and Peace River.

Most people don't know this, but if you rent one of their cable modem / wireless router combos, then it broadcasts a secondary, publicly accessible network by default. That's the whole "xfinitywifi" hotspot thing.

"With millions of hotspots, you can stay connected at your favorite places!"

Yes, because many of those public hotspots are actually full paying private customers who live above your favorite restaurants and coffeeshops, and your borrowing their wifi with Xfinity's blessing.

Sure, you can turn off the secondary network, but I doubt many people do.

Why was Gary Johnson called "Governor Johnson" in 2016?

For once, this isn't California's fault.

He was sentenced to death, but his sentence was commuted automatically when SCOTUS (briefly) said the death penalty was Unconstitutional.

After it became legal again, the California Supreme Court under Rose Byrd (appointed by Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown) said that the death penalty in all forms was a violation of the state Constitution.

The people responded by amending their Constitution to specifically affirm the acceptability of the death penalty.

Yet Rose Byrd court kept on overturning death penalty cases on "technicalities" until the voters kicked her and two other Cal. Supreme Court members out in 1986 in the same election that saw George "Iron Duke" Dukmeijian re-elected by massive margins.

Yup. Back when California voters still had some sense. I suspect that Moonbeam got into office because his Dad was former governor "Pat" Brown. But the interest didn't survive past his first term.

I've no idea how his current governorship compares with his first term. But he's a check on the more liberal CA state legislatures these days.

It's true that the CASC killed off a bunch of death penalties for a short time around 1972. And I have my share of disdain for their arrogance as well. But...

It carried out 709 executions from 1778 to the 1972 California Supreme Court decision in People v. Anderson that struck down the state capital punishment statute.[1][2]

California voters reinstated the death penalty a few months later, with Proposition 17 legalizing the death penalty in the state constitution and superseding the Anderson ruling. Since then, hundreds of death sentences have been handed down, but only 13 executions have been carried out, the last one in 2006.

As of 2015, there were 746 offenders on California's death row. Of those, 126 involved torture before murder, 173 killed children, and 44 murdered police officers.

Not the answer. ESPN charges PER SUBSCRIBER. If Verizon has 10 million customers for instance, ESPN charges a 'head tax' for each and every one of them - whether they view ESPN, subscribe to ESPN, or not. A la carte cable won't fix that.

Streaming and over-the-air antenna systems are the only way to kill the beast. Save yourself some money. A very nice pile of money. Invest in an antenna and become familiar with streaming. You won't regret it.

We've let the politicians know for at least a decade we want a la carte cable and they've patronized us and done nothing. It's never going to happen.

There are so many inexpensive 'toys' out there that can be hooked up to over-the-air antenna that have most of the functionality of a Tivo. Put a TV Guide app on your phone for a program guide. Program an incredibly inexpensive PVR with a super fast flash drive (or two or three for the price) for weekly recording. FF through commercials. Pause, rewind, 2X, 4X, 8X, 16X, 32X playback and rewind.

Buy an Amazon FireStick (cheap) and subscribe to somebody (Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, etc) to get your feet wet.

Beating the same dead horse of a la carte is not the answer.

Like I said, ESPN charges a $8.00 to $10.00 a month BASE fee per subscriber... every month based on the total number of cable subscribers. If you choose to include ESPN in your package then you pay another fee on top of that.

If a cable company doesn't like it... true, they can negotiate. With the likely outcome that people who really want sports will now be unable to get it... and then change cable companies or do without and kill cable completely. ESPN has the cable companies over the barrel.

I guess it's free market, but it doesn't seem like it. It has the distinct odor of monopolistic behavior.

It will break ... unless advertisers and cable companies prop up ESPN in the face of declining ratings - and I do not ignore that possibilty.

But barring that ... ESPN simply will not have the cash to but the television rights to events. And without that - they are back to where they started - a channel that talks about sports more than they show sports.

543 Currently, there's a mutual dependency, and both sides have each other over a barrel.

ESPN doesn't charge cable companies high subscriber fees for ESPN alone.

That's an accounting trick. Most cable companies are forced to take all the random ABC and Disney channels along with ESPN for an undisclosed total package price.

Cable and streaming companies pay Disney different prices too since they negotiate independently.

The subscriber fees you read about are guessed by market researchers based on ratings data and advertised cable prices. It's a guessing game and a shell game to some degree.

Watch Amazon for their FireStick devices -- over the holidays they almost give them away. For like twenty dollars - one time fee for the device. It's a cheap way to get your feet wet.

559 @553: "what storage devices do you use to record shows?"

That's the thing. You can't really record shows. Some of the paid streaming services are starting to offer "cloud DVR" functions, but those will be gimmicky for a couple of years while everyone experiments with how to make money.

YouTube TV, for example, is giving everyone "unlimited" storage, but they won't let you fast forward through all commercials "recorded" shows.

And streaming boxes like Roku, Amazon Fire, Apple TV, etc., are cool, but you can't really watch much without a cable or streaming package.

Download the ABC app? BBC America app? Fox News app? ESPN app? Okay, you can watch a few on-demand items for free, and maybe some "online only" streams, but if you want to watch the real, normal channel, or anything new in the on-demand catalog, then you need to enter a login and password from a content provider.

Bottom line, you'll still end up paying someone somewhere for the good stuff.

I dream that streaming internet will get people away from some of the sports brain drain bobble heads, and get them into independent thinking. The horde is not representative of the low info voter, and then there is another half that doesn't even vote.

But the control freaks are busy making sure our thoughts are directed in other ways, like via the censorship efforts of the big internet conglomerates. Still, the internet will offer other pathways for the inquiring mind that wants to know ... drones with cameras are getting really good, ultra HD is available to produce rather cheaply

... blogs need more video outlets like CRTV is trying to do (Blaze, Newsmax, etc.), though it would be nice to package the conservative bloggers in an ESPN style package. 20 to 50 million subscribers with real alternative news could bring down those subscriber prices.

564 Ace Tractor Supply, cool!

I looked into Tivo but they are ridiculous

565 I'm lucky I live close to a city and get lots of network with my little outdoor antenna. I realize those living much further away from a city, can't do that.
All the sub channels really give you a lot, even QVC etc....I watch a lot of ME TV.

Now they are limited. Not nearly as functional as Tivo. You can't record six channels at once for example. But set it to record something at a certain time every week, works fine.

With the savings from canceling cable I don't feel bad owning two of them. In different rooms.

567 Anyway he asks what I pay for TV now and I told him and he just left....didn't even say goodbye.

I've had a number of sales pitches from people trying to suck me back to cable, and they seem to give up when you tell them you're happy with your antenna. It's like they know its futile to try.

568 @561: "MLB AM is majority owned by Disney now."

Technically speaking, Disney bought a majority stake in a spin-off called BAMTech, and BAMTech doesn't have exclusive patent rights on all the technology. It's mostly a purchase of digital infrastructure and human talent. The sports leagues and HBO may divest and reestablish their own companies down the line.

569 I cut the cable or satellite as the case is, I bought a Mohu antennae and got a Roku cost $230.00 now I sign on to stuff I think is worth watching and not things that have strayed into the gender, political protesting agenda. The last straw was DTV adding unasked a six installment payment of $46.99 or a total of $281.91 for the NFL channels, which I have never watched. I have always despised Pro football too much like Pro wrestling.
That raised my bill from $120.78 to $155.78 and when I protested they told me eventually you will have to pay that price a month anyway. So, I called and cancelled the DTV, told them why and the DTV man told me he didn't like my attitude and hung up. I called back and told them go ahead hang up BUT first cancel my DTV.They did, threatening me with having to pay early cancellation and equipment fees which I don't owe.I may have to pay DTV that last $155.78 but I actually saved me and cost DTV $1500.00 in two years time I will have cost DTV $3,000.00 extrapolate the loss from there. Yes it is sweet.
So Van Pelt, Bubba I'm still not in the dark and doing better, oh yes, I did mention your name as one of the reasons I was cancelling."Cheers"

570 Where was that barn?? That could easily be the barn I played in growing up, then had to fill with hay bales in my teens. Exactly like I remember it from (many) years ago, flag and all.
