1 Good Morning Morons today is Saturday, November 18, 2017. On this day in 1883 American and Canadian railroads instituted five standard continental time zones, ending the confusion of thousands of local times. The continental US is now divided into 4 standard time zones. Canada still has 5.

57 ' saw the other morning you have a spackle job, how's it going?'

Going better than I expected.

All the screws and plaster washers recessed below the plaster surface, and mudded.

Andover two days of slowly tightening the drywall screws into the overhead joists, the rock lath panels have pulled back up against the joists.

Taling and first coat of mud are done.

And I hope to finish the mudding today, and than start the painting.

There isn't a contractor alive who would have done all this. They would have simply torn down the old plaster ceilings and replaced them with drywall.

But, I like the feel and sound of plaster.

59 " The continental US is now divided into 4 standard time zones. Canada still has 5."

Minor quibble. Newfoundland has its own time zone (UTC - 3.5), i,e, a half hour shifted from Atlantic time. This is the cause of many jokes in Canada. One could argue that Nfld time shouldn't be counted, as the island is not part of continental Canada. However, part of Labrador (which is in Nfld) is on Nfld time. So, the strictly correct statement is that Canada has 6 time zones.

They used to have 7, but the Yukon territory moved off Yukon time and went onto PST. Yukon time later became Alaska time, which is used in most of AK, except for some of the Aleutian Islands.

The creation myth for railroad inspired time zones in Canada is that they were invented by Sir Sanford Fleming. The engineering building at U of Toronto is named after him.

________

Her political career was an accident. Her candidacy in 2006 was one of those take-one-for-the-team losses against an unbeatable candidate. Then that whole anti-Republican "Culture of Corruption" meme got traction, and the GOP incumbent had some issues about the cops going to his house for domestic disputes. Gillibrand (a woman, of course) said she was against domestic violence. That was all she needed to get elected to Congress. After the election, it came out that the congressman was the one calling the cops on his wife, but no matter.

She advanced to the Senate when Hillary Clinton vacated her seat to become Secretary of State.

I can't think of a less accomplished person in the entire world than Kirsten Gillibrand. Then again, it's early and I'm not really trying.

70 'yes if to much damage tear it out and drywall it.'

Oh yes, if really busted up, replacement is the way to go.

But, I should have been a little clearer on the house construction.

and if you already are familiar with this, just sky over it.

Rock lath was an intermediate method of wall and ceiling finishing, which was a transition between traditional wood lathe/plaster construction and modern drywall construction.

Rock lath was a gypsum subpanel, usually 48x16 inches in size that was nailed to the studs or joists.

Then, the brown, or mid-coat of plaster was troweled into place, and finally, the smooth coat was applied. This gave a traditional plaster finish wall, but easier panels as the first layer, instead of the thin wood lath strips, and plaster keyed into place.

As our homes were built in around 1953, the wood joists have lost much of their ability to grip and retain the original drywall type nails used in construction, allowing the ceilings to begin dropping down and separating from the ceiling joists.

As the dropping progresses, in some cases, the plaster will crack right at the joints between two of the panels as well.

The new screws and washers spaced ever six inches on joist centers, and then hand tightened evenly across the entire surface of the ceiling exerts lifting force, and eventually pulls the ceiling panels back into place.

The plaster washers are originally intended to simply be installed on the surface and then mudded into place. But, I prefer to not have to try to put over 1/8" of mud on a ceiling, do I take a dremel with a carbide bit, and skim cut into the finish coat enough that the washer and screw are just below the surface. More time consuming, but a much more uniform finish, retaining more of the original plaster surface.

It looks good so far. Let's see how it finishes up looking.

74 Not sure that the FCC rule matters much one way or the other. The problem is media bias in general, and avoiding a cross-media monopoly really hasn't done anything to promote a diversity of viewpoints.

I guess striking the rule could potentially do harm if, say, a newspaper like WaPo or NYT were allowed to buy out a local conservative radio station, I don't know.

Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at November 18, 2017 07:24 AM (/qEW2)

75 Yes the rock lathe was a improvement over stripping lathe, so much so when I worked in old houses and churches it rarely came up to patch. Stripping lathe ( wood 1 1/2 inch wide) starts breaking up it's hard to patch. At Villanova last year there was some of that and it was done with plaster over metal screen done by a plasterer.

They haven't enforced that rule worth a shit here. Three conglomerates own all the newspapers and news TV stations in SC. One company owns everything in my service area. They even bought out the small local paper here. And it immediately changed from a conservative paper to a Democrat PR rag. All the newspapers in SC are now Democrat PR rags despite this being a heavy red State. I dropped all my newspaper subscriptions and told them why.

And a Malwarebytes scan informs me that there is malware embedded in Microsoft's Mahjong time killer. Since it is the kind of adbot that I hate the most and since Mahjong is used only to kill time, I decided to remove Mahjong.

There seems to be some degree of dislike between Malwarebytes and Microsoft since Microsoft updates often kill Malwarebytes. And from years ago, it was said that you can not run two kinds of antivirus software packages at the same time, but Malwarebytes kills adbots that MacAfee does not.

Yes, I know that blogs sell advertising just as broadcast media sells commercials, but I despise that business plan, even as so many websites refuse to permit me to view content until I turn off adblock.

There has to be a better way.

Now watching some of the old movies the city newspaper had a very tall skyscraper building in most cities. Now they mostly are moving out and into a store front somewhere. Noscript is the same way, and the latest update to Firefox (and I remember the hate fest we had when the employees of Firefox got their CEO fired) require and update to noscript. There are a ton of scripts running on almost every website, and enabling a script to enable content then requires enabling another half dozen.

You want a Facebook 'Like button' which imports the blog post to your facebook page? There is a script for that. Google Plus, snapchat, instagrahm, all those cool social media sites? There's a script for that.

I don't think so. In the article he's trying to strike a pious pose, distinguishing between "actual" Christians like himself, and "cultural" Christians who value politics over spirituality.

In the quote, I think he's saying, clumsily that "cultural" Christians will go with Moore because the other candidate is a Democrat, but a true Christian can reject Moore because of what he allegedly did.

The problem is that Erickson is lying about the facts in order to make Moore seem guilty. 18 year olds are adults, not teenagers. And the yearbook cannot even be properly examined, as Allred won't release it. He's simply being manipulative to erode support for Moore. Bearing false witness. Some Christian.

101 Another little interesting tidbit here.

As many of you know, Baltimore lost a Police Detective to a murderer several days ago.

Shot in the head on a public street, while conducting street interviews on another homicide from 2016.

And the residents of the city are justifiably enraged at the murder of this Detective.

But, during the hours of listening to local talk radio, and surfing local social media, there is one subject which has not been brought up a single time that I am aware of.

Gun Control.

In a liberal, Democratic city such as this, if someone had told me that gun control would NOT be an immediate topic to emerge, I would have told you that just could not happen.

Liberals are attracted to gun control as a fix-all like Rosie O' is attracted to Twinkies.

I kinda thought that. Microsoft solitaire is the same way. It is 'free' if you agree to accept advertising which comes with the 'challenge' games. They are short videos and I have the bandwidth now. But the adbot company embedded in Mahjong was specifically identified, leaving me with the impression that company had a history of injecting malicious code. It popped up again when I opened the Firefox browser making me suspicious.

All the adblockers have cut deals with advertisers to whitelist their adbots if they pay money to the adblocker developer.

Firefox solicits funding from anyone, everyone, and I suspect the Electronic Frontier Foundation supports Firefox because there was an extensive commentary in the Firefox announcement of a new release that explicitly linked the TOR network and their browser.

I always laugh about these public VPNs, anonymizers, and TOR because I always imagine the CIA, FBI, and NSA running the public VPN/anonymizer.

As I've said before -- age of consent has nothing to do with going out on a date.

Only to the leftist mentality does 'going out on a date' automatically mean intercourse. Because they have few if any morals they automatically assume (but of course, because they are so superior) that everyone else is just as morally challenged.

When I was young, first or second base only meant that she was interested in continuing a relationship. It didn't mean I wanted or expected sexual intercourse, just an indication of physical attraction. Or lack of.

The 'new rules' applied to actions forty years ago is bullshit.

No, actually that's a thing.

Gun control, gun control, gun control is what you hear when there is a shooting EXCEPT when the person shot is law enforcement.

The gun control crowd wants to take guns away from law abiding ppl because they might use them for evil someday.

But anyone who shoots a cop is not in that group, so they don't want to talk about taking guns.

No, it's like someone who creates a twitterbot that posts the same like under 500 different accounts, in order to make people think "So many people believe this. Surely there must be some grain of truth to it".

They are relying on sheer volume in order to put doubt into people's minds against Moore, even though the accusers aren't credible, like with Allred's laughable demand that people shoud just accept the yearbook story as true, and then won't release the yearbook to be properly examined.

133 The campaign against Moore is part of the campaign against Trump. Basically the Establishment Uniparty wants to use the Access Hollywood tape to impeach the President.

Here is the problem with that: there is a phrase on that tape that the left always leaves out of their hysterical shrieking: "...if they let you." That is a rather important phrase - it means that everything that proceeds that phrase is a description of consensual activity - not an assault.

it seems more like Hillary is keeping up this finger pointing game to redirect the criminal probes.

Those that are now distancing themselves from the Clintons may just want to move the party in a new direction, but they may well see the Clinton Crime Syndicate in trouble and want to be well away from the explosion. Those like Brazile are complicit ... and need to be testifying or getting their own defense attorneys.

But Mueller/Rosenstein and many on the inside still, are also complicit. So we'll see if they still manage to skate as usual. If they do it convicts the whole FBI (and IC), at least the heads, which means the whole fish is rotten. (it IS rotten, but maybe it can be salvaged if heads roll) imo
