SJW Marvel No More? Disney Fires Editor in Chief; Instead of Promoting Also-an-SWJ Second in Command, Disney Goes Outside the Leadership Chain to Put the "Talent Liaison" in Charge

Oh, don't believe the "SJW Marvel No More." It's my theory that Disney is responding to SJW attacks on its profitable movies by giving the SJWs its not-very-profitable stupid comic books.

The comics are being sacrificed on the Bonfire of the Social Justice Vanities so that the movies can keep having those damnably cisnormative, toxically-masculine straight males playing the heroes.

Men who like icky things like hammers and heavy-metal tech and vaginas and stuff.

If you remember, Marvel Comics president Ira Perlmutter appeared with Trump to give him a check for "the veterans" when he did that counter-programming stunt, appearing at "for the vets" fundraiser in a broadcast competing with the debate he was boycotting. Ira Perlmutter does not seem then like the kind of guy to give the order to turn every straight superhero gay and replace every male superhero with a female version.

No, I'm pretty sure this is Disney. Pure corrupt leftwing Disney.

While this transgenders-are-superheroes-if-you-think-about-it initiative was greeted by many of Marvel's hard leftist "creators," this really wasn't Marvel Comics' corporate decision. I think the word came down from the real Corporate Masters, the leftwing ideologues of Disney, to placate the hard left by setting the comics on fire with stupidity and leftist politics.

While Iron Man remains male and profitable in the movies, they'll continue Iron Man's gender/racial transition into a black teenaged girl in the comics. Because no one reads those any more (thanks largely to Marvel's give-the-comics-to-the-lunatic-SJWs corporate strategy).

So okay, SJW Marvel is still on. However, at least the failed team that brought two disastrous years has been shunted aside for a Talent Liaison -- what a slap in the face to the current leadership team. At least their failures are now acknowledged.

But that new leader will just try to bring a Fresh Hot Take to the Same Tired Social Justice Bullshit Disney wants Marvel comics to do.

The new guy will put into place a whole series of exciting new failures he's been itching to see fail in print.

This is about rebranding, not remaking. They just want to give some new hype line to the company -- "MARVEL IS BACK!!!" or "EXCELSIOR ETERNAL!!!" some bullshit -- while doing the same stupid shit.

There's no reason to change Disney's corporate strategy of sacrificing the weak member of the herd to protect the strong member.

Let's face it: It works. The movies make billions and the comic books make... well, they make deadweight in the discount bins. It's like throwing an old tuna fish sandwich behind you when a pack of jackals is chasing you. Who gives a shit about the stinky tuna fish sandwich? The important thing is getting the important, revenue-generating asset -- your actual body and life -- out of the line of sight of the jackals.

15 Who the hell reads comic books any more?

I voraciously read comics as a kid.. On Saturday, I would make the trek to one of the better corner stores that checkered the south side of Chicago at that time and bought several comics.. DC & later Marvel.

But they were 10 cents back then.. I can't believe many people would pay the current going prices of $4 buck - and up!

16 Giving the comics to the SJWs won't work. Because comics are a niche hobby, and SJWs don't want a niche. They want full control of everything.

28 This is hilarious and fits the MO of the left perfectly.

The comics are currently nearly the sole source of current, profitable movie freanchises. So, they are milking the (older) storylines for current movies.

Meanwhile, they are (at least allowing, if not encouraging) the creation of present comics that appeal to almost no one.

Meaning, they are killing future (potential) profits for avoiding having to face the fact that people don't want leftist ideas. They know people don't (as evidenced by the movies) but won't fight their "allies" over that because they don't want it to be true.

In a nutshell - sacrifice the future for present profit. It's the overwhelming philosophy of this age.

As long as they've ruined the sammich for the original fan base they're just fine. This is all about conquering, so it really doesn't matter if they subvert it from within or burn it to the ground. Not like they were comic book fans to begin with.

39 Given the timing, it might also be interesting to bring up something on the gaming front.

The Marvel Heroes game, one of those MMORPGs using Marvel characters, just announced that it would be shutting down at the end of the year. The interesting part was that the PS4 and Xbox One versions, "Omega", were just released a few months ago, starting around July. So that's a really short time on the console scene, extremely short. And it means a lot of development and porting work down the drain.

On top of that, Disney shut down their in-house "Infinity" games earlier this same year. Infinity is of those Catch-Them-All games using external statues (at a princely sum) that unlock actual game content. You can still play offline, but anything that touched the online servers are now permanently disable.

And as a third thing, Disney is pulling licenses from other developers. The Deadpool game is being 'delisted', in that you can no longer buy the digital version online. Okay if you have a disc-based version for a console, not okay if they never released a physical version for the PC.

Something's going on at Disney, and it isn't pretty for the video gamers out there.

51 @28: "The comics are currently nearly the sole source of current, profitable movie freanchises. So, they are milking the (older) storylines for current movies."

Not really though.

RedLetterMedia guys did a good bit in their Ragnarok review. All comic book movies more or less fit into a standard "gang of misfits face adversity and regroup to save the world from a doomsday plot." They aren't using the more bizarre, fanciful, and unique comic book story lines yet, and likely never will.

Hollywood people likely believe they can do comic books better than the comic book guys can, and judging by the quantity and quality of remakes and reboots in recent years, it's fair to ask whether or not comic book movies are basically doomed at this point.

78 Ah, the old "you're out walking with your friend when you see a bear" ploy. You only have to run faster than your friend.

When I was in Scouts (before they went nuts) a bunch of us were walking from camp up to an obstacle course. It was early morning. We were being loud (shocker right?) and right next to the trail, something large and brown jumped up and came towards me. I was trying to back up, but couldn't. In a second it was gone and my brain had time to process what just happened.

1. It was a doe we startled. It jumped up and ran by me.
2. My buddy was what kept me from backing up. He had jumped behind me and was pushing me to keep me between him and the large brown thing that suddenly came towards us.

His family still regularly gives him the business for this incident.

I haven't played it yet, and because of the outage, won't be now. But it sounded like it was making money even with the console set. Keyword: was. Several commenters on the Xbox side noted that they were able to get some recent purchases refunded because of the closure/change. And that everything in-game is now at fire-sale prices, like 1 unit of whatever the in-game currency is. So they won't be making any more money for the next month and a half. Losing money, even, for the refunds.

At this point, I don't think it's an issue with money. There's something else going on. Kind of like how NCSoft killed and Franken'ed the City Of Heroes MMO. Money was still being made, and there was word the developers were even trying to buy the rights so they could keep the game going. But Paragon Studios was both an American company and a Not-Korean company, so into the wood chipper it went.

People forget, but some of the biggest game launches are just as big, if not bigger, than summer blockbuster movies. Hundreds of millions of dollars in production costs.

It's a bloated marketplace that thought they'd keep growing forever and it's beginning to cannibalize itself with repetitive stories and scammy business tricks.

I'd guess game franchises will move away from big annual launches and toward monthly subscriptions for incrementally updated games.

And it won't be long until you're stacking up a whole bunch of individual subscriptions just like the streaming video marketplace seem hellbent on doing as well.

People were tying Disney to Star Wars Battlefront 2's lootboxes, which are really just an electronic slot machine designed to get kids hooked on gambling...

But yeah, Disney has been making some interesting moves in videogames lately. I'm wondering if a "great videogame crash" is going to happen, like it did back in the 80's and Disney's trying to get in front of it. Because I can totally see it happening.

Oh, that's already been happening.

I mean, EA has Origin (or EA Access on the Xbox), Xbox has GamePass, there's Gamefly, there's a new one coming from Gamespot, Disney is heading that way I bet.

Actually, I'd bet that each and every big publisher is looking at it.

Games as a service has been around as a concept for a while now.

171 It's a bloated marketplace that thought they'd keep growing forever and it's beginning to cannibalize itself with repetitive stories and scammy business tricks.

EA's new Star Wars game is getting DESTROYED in public forums for one of their "scammy business tricks". They're locking powerful fan favorite characters unless you do one of two things:

1. Grind for hours and hours like you're an East Coast tollbooth operator.
2. Pay money

Fans are freaking out because basically if you want to play as powerful Darth Vader anytime soon, you're paying real dollars for it, on top of the game price. So if you play online games, you're competing against more powerful characters on day 1 because Timmy's step dad is trying to shut Timmy up so he can get busy with Timmy's mom.

Diversity and Comics pointed out that while they do "Muh Body Diversity" in the comic and depict her as dumpy, fat-boy-body mongoloid, in the TV SHOW, which could actually be profitable, they cast an actress who is conventionally pretty with huge boobs.

So this is the basis for my "Tank the comics, protect the profitable comics/tv show biz" theory.

196 @113 - Walter Freeman

The Marvel Heroes / Omega game closure goes against that train of thought. It's an MMO, online-only game. It had updates through the years on the PC, and apparently a few on the Console versions as well in the few months it was born.

The one difference is that the Console versions were the 'Free To Play' variant, which are "The Thing" for games that want to try and get continual funding instead of an initial first-time sale. I think the PC versions may have went that way as well.

The days of monthly fees for MMOs are in the trash heap - only World of Warcraft has managed monthly fees to this date, and Blizzard/Activision's newer products have gone with an initial purchase (Overwatch, Destiny, Destiny 2) followed by lots of in-game purchases to try and continue the revenue stream. And lots of other developers are going the Free-To-Play (with 'optional' purchases), even with previously-paid games.

It's an unstable situation in the gaming world, but given the constant killing of both online AND offline games related to Marvel and Disney, it's hard to know what the hell is going on.

Also remember, Disney killed LucasArts, the game development studio, when they acquired all the Star Wars stuff from Lucas. It basically exists as a skin-suit now if you happen to see it actually applied to any games.

So, there's something going on. But at this point, I'm thinking it's closer to the Microsoft style of management - A bunch of cool things that are murdered in their sleep due to horrible mismanagement. Or worse.

Comic books started getting SJW in the early 70s namely with the Green Lantern when Denny O'Neil wrote it and ruined some really good Neal Adams art work with all of the preaching. That went a way for a number of years in fact, when Tom DeFalco was editor and chief of Marvel he had a back to basics approach and wanted the more fun times of the Jack Kirby days. Sadly those days of fun escapism seem to be completely gone

263 @196: "The days of monthly fees for MMOs are in the trash heap - only World of Warcraft has managed monthly fees to this date, and Blizzard/Activision's newer products have gone with an initial purchase (Overwatch, Destiny, Destiny 2) followed by lots of in-game purchases to try and continue the revenue stream. And lots of other developers are going the Free-To-Play (with 'optional' purchases), even with previously-paid games."

Yeah, see, I think that's a short-term shift that's unlikely to endure. WoW was ahead of its time in that regard.

Gaming has gotten so freakin' huge in the last ten years -- massive production costs, pre-launch advertising costs, cross-media intellectual property tie-ins, etc. -- and now you've got traditional big media types calling the shots rather than techie developers or upstart gamers.

It's a much more risky business than it used to be, and studios want more dependable revenue streams. All those in-game purchases are more or less de facto subscription fees. The problem is constantly offering "new things to buy and unlock" can't last forever because you can only nickel and dime folks for so long until they become resentful.

The free-to-play in-game purchase model is being pushed from the mobile sphere into desktop and console gaming. The difference is mobile app development has basically destroyed what people were willing to spend up front on software; not just games, but all software.

How much longer are people going to willing to spend $40 dollars upfront, never mind $60 or $80, for "real" games when they know they're getting less and less for their money, and they're basically paying a big cover charge for an ala carte semi-gambling experience?

Software as a service is bound to creep into gaming eventually.

Liberalism is about self-flattery. They're see themselves as heroes, because a hero is a pretty good thing to be, so they're almost like heroes--in the way that libs mean "almost like" (which means a point of similarity)--in some point of similarity, and they feel that they really do a better job than the toxic masculine and misogynistic rapey heroes of the old days, ... so they're really the heroes, and you just can't identify that because of your rapey ways!

320 Yes, Riverdale, on The CW. It's sort of like the original Beverly Hills 90210 meets Silence of the Lambs, except that most of the characters (except for Veronica and her parents) are lower-middle or working-class people. But they've got a black-masked serial killer who has actually killed some people -- it's not a comic hoax -- and it's done in a creepy film-noir vibe, though in color.

Yes, that's it. Embleton has a recognizable style; I saw some of his military history paintings some years later, and realized that was the "Wicked Wanda" fellow. Very neat and satirical writing, and wonderful painting in that strip.

329 268 Here's what a real-life woman who can kick men's asses looks like:

---

Ah, but probably only average joe men, and probably only 50-60% of the time even then. Maybe even less.

It would be interesting to see a no-holds-barred competition with her vs a completely average middle aged dude with two or three months of training.

Guys who have trained similarly and are competing at the same level or much, much lower but in mens groupings? She doesn't win once with the first group. I'll be generous and guess she wins 10% of the time against the second.

I hear from a friend who says he has insider knowledge that, while comic book stores are taking it in the shorts, someone's buying up the SJW comics in graphic novel form, and they're still making money, so Marvel/Disney doesn't really can about the uproar. I have no way to evaluate the truthfulness of this, though.

Another question for the SJWs. When will a super hero be portrayed as a character with physical disabilities?

Actually going back to the 90's, In Living Color had a character played by Daimon Wayans called 'Handi-Man' who was a superhero. But I preferred Hom-e the Clown.

353 Lol, I had forgotten all about "Wicked Wanda". Ahh, the good old days - sure it was porny, but that one had some real wit and a lot of satire that had some real bite to it. Stuff that actually made you feel more clever for having read it, unlike today's spewings that all feel like they were written by Billy Madison.

Posted by: Tom Servo at November 17, 2017 04:00 PM (k1TUh)

354 CB Cebulski, the new EIC, has lots of editing and creative experience. So...not a bad choice or even a slap in the face. He's been working to expand Marvel's bidness in Asia and I guess that really helped push him over the top, especially if Marvel feels that market is growing.

356 I tried to read Green Arrow after watching the TV show. "I am a social Justice Warrior." And that was the end of that. Same for Super Girl after the "We hate TRUMP." season finale. They really have misjudged their audience.

We are a Nielsen family so yeah, Super Girl you lost 1000's of viewers. Same goes for the NFL. We became a NF to let them know the shows we like. Promote our opinions.
