Atlas Robot Shows Jumping Ability, Including Ability to Execute Backflips

While we'll always need human soldiers, there's nothing that says human soldiers have to be the first through the door, or the first down a street that may harbor a sniper.

Update: The Atlas robot has just tweeted that Al Franken molested it when it was in low-power mode.

185 I work in tech. Not robots, but in the general field. Metal sounds tough until you need it to do complex things. Then the mechanism for making it do complex things becomes complex. And a complex mechanism has many point of failure.

And if something has many points of failure, all the ways it can fail in the wide world, will never have been even foreseen.

....And then you start shooting at it.

191 >>>Human vision is superior to robotic vision? That surprises me. I would think they would have infrared, ultraviolet, heat sensing, etc.

the optic processing part of vision is what's lagging. Your brain really makes sense of visual information, finding edges and defining shapes, and robotic vision is only just now becoming capable of that.

our optic nerves present our brains with a much more coherent and defined vision of what we "see" than our eyes alone would.

I think this is a nagging problem with driverless cars. It's not that they don't have clear vision, it's that they're lagging in the "figure out what these bits of light and shadow" mean part.

Posted by: Walter Freeman at November 16, 2017 06:30 PM (I/iGu)

223 imagine seeing a dog run across your field of vision. Your optic nerve (itself a little mini-brain for visual processing) tells you that shape is actually the same shape moving in 3D space.

Imagine a robot without good processing programming and some kind of artificial visual intuition. What does it see? It sees a shape which disappears, then a split second, a new shape that reappears a few centimeters away, etc. If the shape moves into shadow or to bright blinding light, it doesn't have the intuition to assume the thing contnued moving in its previous vector and can now be found outside the shadow or blind spot it disappeared into.

Our optic nerves tell us that these points of light and shadow are connected to a tangible moving reality and that that reality has a form beyond the mere activation of photoreceptors.

Dumb robot vision doesn't have that. Well, it's getting there. But it's a tricky business.

visual intuition is, I'm guessing, a smaller solveable version of the AI problem, but still a difficult problem. Next comes language parsing, and then...

I have to disagree. Manufacturing robots are fixed in place and do repetitive motions. Cars are on wheels. This humanoid form factor is completely different. A whole nother layer of complexity. A different type of movement; one that requires balance.

At the end, it lands on a soft surface. Completely different sensory environment when it comes to balance. The little dance at the end is a cute embelishment.

On a previous project I had a bug that popped up only if someone didn't fix the equipment we were monitoring for three months. Our system would decide the problem was fixed, then two hours later decide the problem was back. The code was fully tested, had been inspected multiple times. Everything else about that feature was perfect.

And you think programmers are up to coding Asimov's three laws?

(Problem was an intermediate step in some math took its results in a format that maxes out at 2 billion and change. Three months is 2 billion and some change nanoseconds. So the math whacked out, everything looked good, then on the next check, it looked bad again.)

oh, you don't, really, except for some functions: Like raiding a terrorist house. The geography of the building is not traversible by most shapes except a human shape. You have to be able to climb stairs, etc., and you can't be too big to go through a door.

A lot of our future Killbots will just be tanks and jets and even like bugs and weird-looking donkeys.

But for house raids, or stuff like household cleaning bots, they're gonna have to be a bit human-shaped.

What's that? It hasn't been adjudicated? It's hearsay? It could be used unfairly to smear the innocent for political purposes? Sounds like the Roy Moore Standard to me. And this is not from 40 years ago, it's from 40 minutes ago.

These people solved the problem from the bottom up. They figure out physical laws, then invented components that could take the laws into account in order to perform movements like this.

What would be even more impressive would be to figure out how a cat works. A cat sees a chair or a table or a counter and its brain does something to tell its legs to apply the amount of force to reach that exact height. What sort of computation is going on in the cat's mind?

397 Area-denial weapons might be the first autonomous systems actually used. An Army officer friend of mine works on one of these systems in development now.

It's based on sound. Drones carrying charges would loiter over a prescribed area and drop bombs on anything that moved, based on its sound signature.

Apparently they can be very discriminating in their targeting. He said they'd be able to distinguish between a Russian truck and a German truck, for example.

One reason is that if you build a humanoid robot then you can have the robot go in and do everything a person could do without risk to a human. Yeah you could have a smaller or bigger robot. But can it fit through the door or reach every place a person could.

Another possible reason Is that by creating human limbs on a robot you can work on developing cybernetic limbs for amputees.

I totes understand your point and the reasoning, -but why constrain yourself? Think out of the box. Level the wall/load-bearing structure/building. Of course I'm thinking "military use only," because do we really want a domestic version of these abominations running around the country at-will and on-demand?

462 One reason is that if you build a humanoid robot then you can have the robot go in and do everything a person could do without risk to a human. Yeah you could have a smaller or bigger robot. But can it fit through the door or reach every place a person could.

Another possible reason Is that by creating human limbs on a robot you can work on developing cybernetic limbs for amputees.

There are lots of sources of pseudo-randomness in the environment that can be tapped as a source to generate "random" numbers, like, say, ambient noises, visuals, etc. that could be detected.

540 Wasn't Bob Packwood a Republican? Still, you didn't mention Anthony Weiner or several other Damn Dems, so the point still stands.

This is my problem with the Roy Moore situation. EVERYONE including the GOPe demands he quit. Yet no one suggests that Franken resign, not even his victim. (So how is it that "I voted for Trump" women come forward to say that Moore asked them out on a date 40 years ago and should quit because of it? Can these really be Trump voters?). Of course, *I* demand he resign, but not Shitz McConnell or "the John" Mcstains. This is why I am voting for the Democrats next year against any Republican who is not a loud mouthed conservative who despises McConnell.

543 What in the world makes you think we will always need human soldiers? Naive at best.
