Welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Grab a beverage and a snack and enjoy!!!

A Little of This. A Little of That.

From our friend Jane D'Oh. You might want to grab a Kleenex or two. Thanks Jane.

Therapy animals. Have we gone too far?

No mention of Goldilocks.

This is what happens when you do silly things to your dog.

Meet The PetMorons

-pettread 1.png

pettread2.png

Long story. My Mom got dog, Doberman mix. Next thing you know she has granddaughter (my daughter that dog loved). Dog howled when granddaughter left. Now dog lives with us. Cold (north texas ha!) night Sophie sneaked up hall from laundry room to sleep in from of fireplace. She was about 11 or 12 then. She died in 1996.

So Sophie was lonely (ha!) and needed a companion. We adopt a ridgeback mix named Dottie. This is her chasing fettuccini Alfredo under dishwasher. She died in 2005. I am a better person because they were in my life.

Unfortunately this Moron didn't give us his name. But as with all pet owners we are better people because of our pets. Thank you for the submission. If you are around today let us know who you are.

Dallas (1).jpg

Houston.jpg

The first picture is of my cats, Isis and Penelope (also known to veterinarians everywhere as Thunder and Lightning) saying hello to their parakeet buddy (?) Alex. They're all gone now, but not forgotten.

The next two pictures are of my Wire Fox Terriers. Tucker (the one with the bandage) was 14 pounds of sheer combative machismo, while Monty was a more substantial and dignified gentleman. They were both adorable.

Finally, my beloved rescue Lab mixes, Dallas and Houston. They were brothers but were completely different in all ways except one - food was their number one priority. Dallas (the brindle) was the sweetest dog ever, just 100 pounds of cuddle bug. Houston (the chocolate), who was obviously part pit bull, was my best friend ever.

Thanks for the Pet Thread! -Yui

Quite the gang! Thanks for sharing.

My #3, #1 (of 4) son wanted a kitten to cuddle at night. He is now over 30, but has inherited his father's insomnia. We had no idea that the cute, playful little brown and white kitten at the shelter would become an 18 lb beast. But Klaus is a very nice kitteh and very intelligent (but autistic, like most cats.) He has some "pet" names, like "Klausdale" or "Kitler."

Halloween special! Another cat of ours, affectionately nick-named A-hole, didn't ike her bath.

Best regards -Bergerbilder

Bergerilder a cat guy, who knew?!?! Some interesting names for your cats. Thanks for submitting them to the Pet Thread.

That's a wrap for another week 'Rons & 'Ettes.

I just want to say "Thank You' for all the pet thread submissions. We encourage the submission of pet photos, tips, stories, videos, etc. However, I do have a couple of requests, please include your nic with any submission. We all appreciate your pets name but we would like to know yours as well.

The second request is when you submit please keep it to three photos or less. You are certainly welcome to submit more photos down the road.

Here's hoping you and your pets have a Happy Thanksgiving. Hopefully you'll be out of your nap by the time next weeks Pet Thread shows up. As always you can reach us at petmorons at gmail dot com.

1 It's fun to see how scared of those little birds most cats become once they're let of the cage, and how fierce those little feathered fuckers can be too.

Just remember to turn off your ceiling fans first.

My oldest mare will prolly not make it to christmas. I'm worried for her. Im looking at getting an old foxtrotter to do physical therapy on. I have been so sick im weak and the stroke fucked up my balance and strength on one side. So i have happy and sad going on in my horse life. Guess for that 23 yo foxtrotter its happy too. Im just trying to find a way to be ok with it.

Looking at Hoover the lab and Tango the corgi, I am reminded of QEII, who had that combination of breeds.
Well, maybe she still has them (?) --- but I haven't seen any pictures of her with them in the last several years.

I wonder how much of it is being a bit further from subsistence level, culturally speaking.

I also think it is partially do to seeing them as valued members of a household (dogs for warning against intruders and animal threats, cats against vermin.) I wonder if dogs were used as herding animals in the far east and whether that had anything to do with it. Once you put a certain amount of training into an animal to make it useful to you, it becomes much less likely that you want to eat it.

31 So, kinda on topic.

They finally did study on which were better pets...cats or dogs.

Conclusion: Dogs.

Before the uproar posts, let me tell you why.

B/c dogs make their owners get off the couch and take them for walks. And get exercise. That was it.

They also added all dogs & cats were better to have than none at all.

So you could also argue cats are better b/c you don't have to get off the couch.

33 I cant believe i have to point this out. We don't eat cats and dogs in our traditions because they eat vermin and garbage. Thats gross. Also our religion says its a big no no. Since dogs and cats are damn useful on farms theres no reason to eat garbage/vermin eaters in our society. Now they are friends. But there's more to it than "i think it'd be wrong" it'd also give you parasites.

Hmmm. Yes, interesting.
We'll eat sea critters or birds that snack on beasties but we shun mammals that do so. (Even when it comes to birds, we normally only eat ones that eat fish, worms or insects, etc., not those that eat mammals.)

41 I can see better now
Dottie story: We lived in a house with a patio door and sliding patio screen door. We got Dottie and she was about 6 inches tall. There was a small split in screen she could get through. So over the next 6 months as we left screen door open Dottie kept going in and out of small tear. Ending up being about tall/wide enough to push a spinet piano through.

So Dottie is barking and growling. She has a racoon of about 30 lbs (she weighed about 4 in the yard and they are fighting like day 3 at the Alamo. I proceed to separate them and the coon runs up a tree. About an hour later, more ruckuss, more blood, it is dark and I cannot see anything. I call Dottie, blood everywhere and she is smiling. Smiling like the cheshire cat, most fun she has had in here life, I am talking Las Vegas fun!. So I bring dog in house and clean up blood, none was hers. So next morning I looking out window of second story bedroom double doors. There in the fork of oak tree was dead coon. Oh crap, that is going to smell bad. I walk out on balcony and there he is, dead coon. Wife and I have coffee and I go to figure out how to get dead coon out of tree about 20' off ground. Then TADA, Rocky raises his head, he is alive, beaten and tired. I tell him Dottie is locked up and he scampers down tree, never to visit (much to Dottie's vexation) again.

43 We've had at least one dog continuously for twenty years and a season. Now, two weeks without one.

The three we've had each just walked up on us one day. I couldn't imagine going to the shelter to get one. Well, I can, but I can't imagine getting just one...!

We pet them, teach them, train them, feed them, groom or bathe them, give them shelter and territory and purpose, control their reproductivity, chip them, vaccinate them, tend them when sick, and then deal with so much when they're dying... no small cost of material and peoplepower.

When Gimli walked up and adopted us, we took on all that with a groan, but happily, immediately. We're not quite in the same shape as we were then...

Hard to imagine going to get a dog...

However, if the Lord of Pets throws another good one at us, I suppose...

46 Two weeks ago I had granddog (keep falling asleep when PetThread comes around) for a few days. Newest grandson is wonderful, but can't get him away from other grandparents, so my consolation prize is the puppy. Went to a family wedding and son put puppy in the crate. We argued a bit because I turned back from one of my walks when her howling got so loud I was worried, but she was put in the crate with my old dog and cat for company.

Puppy managed to get out of the crate and greeted me coming home early in the front window. Our forensic examination determined that she picked up the sides of the crate and slithered out. Wait a minute, that's not the cat in the window. It was funny, but I am still picking pieces of the rug she ate from the crate out of the rest of the house.

Good thing I went home early with eldest grandson. Who knows what havoc she could have wrought.

I have heard before that Ridgebacks have a pretty strong drive when it comes to critters.

Dogs seem to have an instinct when it comes to these kinds of things that transcends experience. Ajax is a Australian Cattle dog who has never seen a cow or sheep. However, when he about 6 or so, he was staying at my parents. They went out to do something an did not notice when he slipped out while they were leaving the garage. They were gone for about two hours.

This is in a suburban neighborhood. A lot of kids usually run through my parents yard. When my parents returned after a couple hours, they found Ajax sitting proudly in the middle of the yard, and not a kid in sight. The neighbors related that he had chased the kids every time they got close to the yard, but never once they were beyond the yard. He evidently did not bite a one, just chased them and nipped at their heels to get them moving.

71 For the past nine months or so, my cat has been licking a spot on her back. It's not bare... but it's getting there.

The vet said "fish oil," but that's not doing anything. I've tried an expensive cream, but that... did nothing.

The place she licks is usually associated with allergies; I don't think it's her food, so my guess is "seasonal allergies." She's not under stress, so I don't think it's that.

Any ideas? I don't want to put her in the cone, since she gets super depressed when it's on; as for a sweater... no. She won't got for that either.

77 Neighbor has an old jack russell (turning cranky in her old age) and got another to keep the family dog tradition going. Unfortunately, the newer one ran out the door and bit 3yo grandson when he was trying to get into his carseat. Daughter is used to dogs, so didn't panic, but made it clear that they couldn't let dog run loose if he was going to pull that nonsense. Hope it works out, but I am not a terrier fan overall.

I have 2 Bengal cats, Ava was 10, Reagan is 8. I noticed over maybe the past two months Ava was losing weight. I must've been in denial, I attributed it to her getting older.

Long story short, she either had cancer or IBD and also possible bowel obstruction. She had some secondary problems in her blood work also. Three home vet visits, steroids, antibiotics, anti nausea meds, sub q fluids. She didn't respond to the treatment.
She lost a half pound in her last week and she was eating.

We gave her a fighting chance but it wasn't enough, the vet yesterday told me we were doing the right thing.

She also caught a mouse when she was coming off the anesthesia Monday. I was shocked. She was tough.

1. I actually started the apple cider vinegar and water, but didn't follow through.

I don't think they understand language that well. When I had a cat, it would play this game. I'd be reading something in bed, and it would crouch, and start wiggling its behind in order to pounce. I'd shout, "No! No!" and it would attack, I brought up my forearm to shield myself, and it would tap it with its front paws and run away.

There was a huge Ash outside my bedroom window it was over 25 years old. 5 stories high and almost as wide. I loved it. It got that Ash disease & had to come down. People actually hugged it good-bye. I was lucky enough to get a big chunk of it.

But I used to lay in bed and watch the squirrels play in it with their babies. And birds with their nests and young uns. It was so alive. And in fall it filled my windows with blazing red, orange, and the colors in between. It was glorious.

Do a search for a vet that does home visits. I live in horse country so the vets come to me. They do surgery and have X-rays and ultrasound machines in their big trucks. Some vets will do housecalls for euthanasia.

I think some vets will do it at your home even if they don't have a mobile clinic.

Cat does the same with me with the underarm thing. Maybe to clean his eyes, I don't know. My kitty is an older female Maine Coon that I inherited from my father several years ago. She's a rooster cat. She grew up with him going to dialysis for the early shifts.

She insists upon the social ritual of refilling her food bowl every morning before sunrise. It doesn't matter if I refresh her food and water before bed.

I yowl at her from bed when I don't wanna get up, and she looks at me like she doesn't give a shit.

160 Love the photos and stories of all the pets. Even when we get misty thinking of the ones now gone, it's worth it. Never had a pet that didn't make life richer.

Seeing the birds reminded me of a pair of 'keets we had years ago. I got to name them and they were called Maggie and Drumstick. People, mostly women, were horrified about naming a bird Drumstick but I thought it was hilarious. (I still do.) Those two lived 3 times the average span for parakeets, so I guess the name didn't cause any stress.

Oh, I expect we won't. Our hearts are still too heavy to think about getting another pup (we already took in my mother's Yorkie a couple years ago, so we're not pup-free).

Our inclination is toward getting another golden retriever puppy, for several reasons. First, they're such sweethearts, and so totally adorable as puppies. Second, to maximize the amount of time we have with him.

But let me think about getting a rescue dog. The problem here is that the pound is full of pit bulls (left by Marines going on deployment, I expect), and we're simply not pit bull people.

A friend just stopped by for an hour coffee visit and from the start Lydia's all "meyow meyOWWW" and licking her ass ferociously, bounding around and climbing on the coffee table (where of course she's not allowed) knocking things over and getting hairs in the snacks.

Finally I barked "Grandma! Will you STOP BEING A BRAT and GET BACK IN YOUR CRATE", and she did, even though of course she got all pouty about it. That's when the cat started acting up.

That is a Vancouver City transit bus, owned by a Provincial government entity, the B.C. Transit Corporation (or some variant thereof; it changes names periodically, as it gets reorganized from one cluster-fuck to another). It's also an electric bus; those diagonal wires you see go up to trailing poles mounted on the vehicle's roof, and those pole carry shoes which pick up current from overhead power lines. Those electric buses can scat pretty good, way faster than their Diesel counterparts. I knew a guy who drove them.
Vancouver is Moonbat Central, hence the PETA ad.

I went halfway down and asked her if she was feeling kind of stiff and did she want me to come and get her and she just blinked at me. I could go on for pages with tales of her. Her name was "Boo-boo", sort of silly, but naming her that is a story in itself. She would really respond as I kitten when I made a "booo-boooo-boooo" sound while tickling her belly.

If there is truly a heaven, when I cross over, I will be able to call "Boo-boo?" and her meow in response once again.

Blinking with cats is a sign of trust. And a way to signal "I'm not a threat".

I didn't know this for a long time, but sort of automatically picked up on the blinking thing. When I see a cat, I will automatically blink slowly.

I not only talk to my kittehs, I sometimes sing "Take Meow to the Ballgame" to them, especially during the winter BWS (baseball withdrawal syndrome) season.

You described by yesterday, after i got the mares and their little bastard's feet done. Love them all madly, but there was not a single one not feeling mischievous in the cold morning air. Was so wiped i nearly couldnt get chili thrown together, but now i got food for a week. Its Grims fave, and he can take it to work.

Was thinking about it...i talk to all animals like they are people, as well as my truck. Name all vehicles and my saddles too. But the cats do talk back and so did my dog Waldo. I miss him so bad. To me animals are l8ke people. Different people, alien perspective from human, but you can learn it and its awesome

As Gumdrop says, there was definitely an element of catharsis, along with (much needed) laughter at the situation.

But just like Jay, we couldn't bear to see it again!

I remember you were looking for a Scottish deerhound. A lady at the dog park has one and I told Jules to ask where she got if I wasn't with.

Finally crossed paths again and she asked. Answer...Scotland. Sorry we couldn't help.

She also had a Russian wolfhound and did walk them on the nearby trail. I think she was Russian or something like that. Odd here in small town N IL. Had an accent and not very friendly.

BTW they are thinking of closing the dog park, it's the only one around for miles. Volunteers started it, then petered out. When possible closing was announced support appeared, so who knows the fate.

239 43 -- mindful webworker: We lost our German Shepherd several years ago and we're suddenly dogless for the first time in thirty five plus years. It was horrible. If a piece of food fell, it actually hit the floor and one of us actually had to bend over and pick it up. No more prewashed plates or pots. How do people live like that?
