Oh Boy: Really Hinky Plan Being Talked About to Save the Alabama Senate Seat

An NRSC (National Republican Senate Committee) says the race now stands at Jones 51, Moore 39.

I know some will say the NRSC has a vested interest in pushing out a dooming poll for Moore, and I can't disagree. However, it can also be the case that they're taking shots at a ship that's already going down.

Luther Strange denies he's been approached about a convoluted, and, I gotta say, illegal-sounding gambit to delay the election apparently being talked up by some people (unidentified).

The plan would supposedly work like this--

Wait, before I get to explaining it, I have to say, if it seems like it doesn't make any sense, that's only because it doesn't make any sense.

Anyway, it would work like this if it worked, which it will not:

Luther Strange resigns from his seat early.

The governor declares the seat open and appoints another replacement Senator.

Because a replacement senator has now been appointed, the governor... then cancels the current election and declares the election to fill the seat will happen later.

I... don't think you can do this when you've already scheduled the election for the replacement to finish Jeff Sessions' term.

There's going to be presser from Alabama by Moore's people (if not Moore himself) 'later this hour." I thought it was scheduled for 4pm but I guess it's been pushed back a ways.

I assume he's going to say "I'm not going anywhere so I'm the only chance you've got."

BTW: Last night, both Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity laid into Moore for his deflections and non-denials.

I don't speak to those guys or anything. I just felt it in the air.

Oh, reportedly Steve Bannon has been asking people in his "inner circle" for their thoughts on whether these claims are true. I'm not in on that either.

Let it be litigated out for the next year to the Supreme Court.

I would just not have luther Strange anywhere near it.

Moore is not worth it for me to possibly see the balance of power go to Schumer. Maybe he's a totally innocent man that is the victim of a crazy conspiracy, but at this point its about salvaging the seat and Moore can work on his reputation after the election.

Does it really matter if Moore is innocent if alabama voters are abandoning him?

151 Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans say that Alabama Senate GOP candidate Roy Moore is virtually certain to face a formal ethics complaint - which would lead to expulsion proceedings - should he be elected next month.

https://www.politico.com/story/2017/11/14/
moore-senate-republicans-expulsion-244907

This is the right way to handle the situation. Elect Moore. Seat Moore. If someone wants to, they file an ethics complaint against Moore. There is a hearing. The anti-Moores can present evidence to support their complaint. Moore can present a defense. If the Senate desires, Moore can be thrown out of the seat. If that happens, the Alabama governor appoints a temp replacement and a new election is held. The people of Alabama choose who they want.

Those that were lamenting that there is no formal way to have the charges against Moore formally litigated will get their wish. Both justice and democracy will be served.

It's the right thing to do. McConnell stumbles uncontrollably into the truth (to paraphrase John McLaughlin).

191 How does recall work in Alabama?

Because it seems to me you let the election proceed, and if the democrat wins, you go to a recall, unseat him, and get the thing back in the R column.

If Roy wins--I guess you can still see if a recall would work, but he will have won under what seems like the worst sort of opposition, so a recall would be less likely to pass.

If Moore is elected the Senate can't not seat him over these allegations. There's a SCOTUS precedent right on point involving NYC Congressman Adam Clayton Powell.

Finishing out an existing term though is way different than a normally scheduled Senate election.

Like in AZ, there is a mechanism for a recall. There is also a law that a Governor has to appoint someone of the same political party. Every state is different.

For a state to change when a special election is held seems pretty tame to me.

remember, all that's happened so far is a political party primary

We saw the same with Akin, but what Moore is battling is WAY worse.

Akin was leading by double digits, gets asked a pretty straightforward question about pregnancy and rape, and Akin basically says a woman can will herself not to get pregnant after rape.

Polls still see him ahead like a week out, then drop further,

Akin crashes and burns on election day with 39% of the vote, yet Romney easily win the state by close to double digits.

303 151 Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans say that Alabama Senate GOP candidate Roy Moore is virtually certain to face a formal ethics complaint - which would lead to expulsion proceedings - should he be elected next month.

https://www.politico.com/story/2017/11/14/
moore-senate-republicans-expulsion-244907

5.We now have the leadership talking about cancelling the election.

Are you still seeing no difference?

I actually see a lot of parallels. Especially with Moore being the weakest, Democrats wanted him and they got it,

348 Governor Kay Ivey doesn't have the power nor the inclination, I think, to attempt this.

She herself was appointed as governor from the position of lieutenant governor after Robert Bentley got caught on tape fooling around with his female advisor.

She fired a lot of his cronies and is seen by many as fair and as having inherited a mess which she has cleaned up.

Ivey is up for reelection in a year and faces a more formidable group of state politicians than is currently in Senate race. I don't think she would take a course this risky since she has tried to stay down the middle so far in regards to Moore.

I was walking down the hall to class and reached behind some girls to tap my friend on the arm to get his attention.

You're saying it's not a law.
I am saying it is actually written in the law.

We can debate how the Supreme Court would rule, but saying it doesn't exist is not the same thing.

And how the SC ruled on something 40+ years ago is not something that is permanent considering not a single judge from that Court is still on the current Supreme Court.

Lena Dunham made some false accusation about a Republican at her college who wore cowboy boots or something in her biography. The same one with the infamous "pebble" confession.

I wonder if your liberal friend was concerned about the accusations against Bill. And if she didn't think those were cause for concern, why would she think similar accusations would concern anyone else on either side of the aisle.

611 You can test ink and determine if there were two different kinds used, or can tell how long ago it was done - some of the entries made years later.

Also with copied signatures, you can see the stop and start marks where a copiest checks their work and a real signer never does. A lot of little forensic tells.

The word you're looking for is 'forgery'

If you have someone else's signature, you copy it until you're good at copying it (or hire a professional, if for example you're an attorney that specializes in political hit jobs), and then you make a copy someplace it's useful to you.

Usually a check or credit card receipt.

Whoa! Mitch said that? Even after an election, after the AL electorate had a chance to evaluate and render their judgement via the ballot box? If that happens, a Mitch McConnell endorsement won't be worth a spoiled tissue in 2018."

That's partly why we are here now. The GOPe threw everything they had at Mo Brooks and Roy Moore. The ads were horrible smears. I'm not sure why Mo Brooks didn't do better (I've lived in Hunstville); but he didn't. Then they doubled down on Roy Moore. Really slimy ads that just barely had enough truth in them to avoid defamation action, which may still happen. When that failed, and very little was said about Mr. Jones' positions (full on DNC supporting NoCare, abortion, taxes and so forth), things were awfully quiet around here. The Harvey got weinsteined and still not much happened, though I think Larry Flynt or someone like him posted a bounty for dirt on Roy Moore. Flynt routinely posts bounties for dirt on non-leftist Rs. Now the stuff hits the fan.

What I have not seen yet is a fresh complaint. One within the last few years and with charges timely filed in a court, preferably criminal, since the standard of proof and procedure is much stronger than for civil actions. I've seen no report that Judge Moore has been unfaithful to his wife since their marriage. All of these charges date to prior to his marriage. WUWT?

Then Ms. Allred jumps in. If I had a reservation against Judge Moore before, I don't have one now. Did Ms. Allred take on BJ Clinton? No? Didn't BJ Clinton not confess, in the end, to perjury and suborning perjury? Did the Senate not convict BJ Clinton? Do you expect me to hold Judge Moore to a standard you didn't hold BJ Clinton too? Really?

635 I will forever stand by that this special election never had to take place. What made Strange unlikeable to Republican Alabamians was how he tried to hinder Bentley's impeachment proceedings and not some "stick it to the establishment" mentality.

Ivey made a grave error calling the special election and opening the door for a Democrat to be put in the position of taking the seat. I truly don't get it. This unnecessary election has cost big $$ and given the state a huge black eye (whether Moore is guilty or not.) Will be interesting to see how it plays for her when she finally has to run for her appointed position.

And Roy Moore will never step down from this election and I would say chances are better than good he will win.

636 I've dealt with a lot of CEO's and administrators, lawyers and the like who had secretary's who would create the letter and sign their bosses' name and when they did they always had to initial right by it to show who signed it as only so many folks were authorized to sign for someone...it used to be common place so there is some potential credibility to Moore's story.

An idiot forger might look at the divorce decree and see Moore's signature with the "D.A." and think that's how he signed things. Then, voila! New entry into the yearbook.
