11 Colorful stuff.

About the item on the sidebar, regarding the theme from Shaft: I agree that the instrumental intro is dynamite, but I've always liked the big change at just before 3:00, when the music surges forward. Of course that's when Hayes begins his narration, which is not as good.

77 A lot of Millais' paintings don't have the classical aspect of other Pre-Raphaelists but I enjoy them. I like the detail and color palette. Despite having a central figure, which would usually provide focus, I look at his paintings as an overall image. To my eye each part is equally part of the scene. I find that a little different and interesting.

The chit had already been checked for authenticity by the officers before letting her in. She's just exchanging the chit for the man himself. Mainly to ensure that no one tries to use the chit to gain another rebel's release.

Of course, since the door is already open, it's probably because the guard force is a little lax. The military jailers certainly weren't the elite of the armies of the day.

113 I love the vividness and realism of it. But composition wise, it seems a bit busy. I'd expect her either to be handing the order to the soldier and making eye contact with him. Or looking at her husband. But instead she is handing the document with one hand, holding her husband's with the other, and looking into the distance. Too many things going on at once. Maybe it should have been done as a diptych.

115 Prayers please for the Zimbabwean student we are hosting. He's a mess, worried sick about his family.

He's a Christian and a good kid.

As for Mugabe, I can't even type what I feel about that bastard, and Jimmuh Carter who made it possible for him to take over and rape the country.

I briefly date a Rhodesian rancher/Oxford grad who was a good friend of a guy I worked with in Atlanta. My friend hosted a reunion for his Oxford grad friends in ATL and asked me to join them for dinner, and I ended up going out with the rancher every night that week. He was sweet and kind, and asked me to come visit him in Rhodesia which, thankfully, I never did. I often wonder what happened to him. He owned the ranch his grandfather had owned.

Anyhow, please keep the good people of that country who have suffered so long in your prayers.

They are insanely expensive. I hate the colors of the Galloway tartan anyway (my family is "Scots-Irish" which apparently means they were Scots sent to Ireland and left for America as soon as they could) so I'm jealous of those who have nice tartans.

And, yes I know clan-specific is a fairly recent thing, but it does make sense that there would be regional differences based on dye plants available.

145 I sometimes mention that an artist CBD features makes me want to know more about them. He used Rubens a while back so I got a book on his paintings. What really caught ny attention was the many sketches he made before starting an oil painting. These were often in black, red and white chalk and\or pen and brown ink. Some of these are works of art on their own and worthy of study. For those of us with little talent but an interest in drawing, these mediums provide an inexpensive way to experiment. Just a bit of serendipity from the art thread.

166 I've realized that the Jacobite's actually had a very good case, and good reasons for rebellion. They wanted to put the actual Scots-British heir on the throne, Bonnie Prince Charlie, who was a Stuart, descended not just from the Scot's kings of old but from the English kings as well. (Margaret Tudor)

Parliament, instead, had hired out a line of minor German nobility and called them Kings so that they could putz around in a palace and play dress up while in actual fact Parliament and the ministers ran everything - which usually meant for their own extreme profit.

The Jacobites position was, essentially, if we're going to have a King let's at least have a British King who has some connection to the people here, not some German meistkopf who doesn't know his schwannstucke from a stick in the ground.

Little known Muldoon fact:

209 "Which is the one problem with a monarchy. IF you get a good King, it works great, until the King gets old and feeble. If you get a bad one, there isn't any way to get rid of the guy.

Well, that, and the blood fueds between factions."

Which is the object lesson that Zimbabwe is getting educated in this morning. Whether it's ancient Rome or modern dictatorships, if there's no publicly accepted path of succession when the ruler loses his effectiveness, the man who takes over is always the guy who is able to get control of the Army first. If an ambitious man can pull off that trick, it doesn't matter where he comes from or who his parents were.

Once in while it works out, but seems like it usually turns out to be the same old thing with more guns.

Posted by: Anon a mouse... at November 15, 2017 10:02 AM (MINbv)

Perhaps, but art is a very symbolic medium. It's very rarely shallow and needs its imagery to speak at multiple levels. How do we know that the woman loves this man? Her face is very expressionless (a very classical trait) and her gestures are very stiff. The dog is the key. As someone asked above, why is the dog even here? It is the emotional microphone of the scene. Notice, too, how the dog's face is right next to the held-hands (is that a word?), and it is looking right at them. Follow its line of sight and you get to the exhausted man resting his head on the woman's shoulder. Even though that is in low light, we see it clearly. The dog turns the woman from a dutiful wife into a loving companion.

"Constantine, who had most of his male relatives killed."

Pretty standard in middle eastern monarchies, any time period. (which is what the late Roman Empire was turning into)

Little known bible story - one of those that doesn't get taught - was that the very first thing that "Wise" King Solomon did after King David's death was to execute his well known older brother (the one who should have been the heir apparent) and also execute Joab, his father's right hand military man. Reading between the lines, it sounds like an entire faction got executed upon the death of the old King, which is probably why Solomon had such a long and peaceful reign.

260 Regarding this Roy Moore "attempted rape" allegation and the locking car doors, Rush talked about this yesterday, and the fact is that while you could get a car with power door locks, as far back as the 1960s, you only saw those features (also power windows) on high end cars like Lincolns and Cadillacs. The average car (Ford or Chevy, for example) almost never had those features. Indeed not until the 1990s, did these features (power windows and door locks) become common on cars in general.

Rush says that the child safety locks (that would prevent a door from being unlocked was not available until the 1980s. I didn't start seeing them until the 1990s. First ones I saw were a little switch on the car doors themselves that disabled the inside locks so that a kid could not unlock and open the car door from the inside.

The point though is that back in the 1970s you could not get even power door locks (the child safety feature did not exist then) only on luxury cars. At that time Moore was fresh out of law school and had just gotten a job working as an assistant DA in whatever town he was living in. Where would he get the money to buy a Cadillac or Lincoln?

There was no right to primogeniture in ancient times, or even in the Bible. Many times, the heir was the son of the favorite wife, or the kid that didn't piss the king off the most. Solomon was Bathsheba's kid. Joab had killed someone under David's protection, but David kept him alive because he was an effective general. The brother could not accept David's choice of Solomon over himself and tried to rebel. He was executed as a traitor. It wasn't a case of "get rid of a rival" like the Ottomans or Caesars.

And any car of that era, if the door locked from inside, it could be unlocked from inside. In most cases, simply working the interior door handle automatically causes the inside lock button to pop up. Even on cars with power door locks. Back in that era, police cars were about the only ones in which you could be locked in against your will.

Regarding this Roy Moore "attempted rape" allegation and the locking car
doors, Rush talked about this yesterday, and the fact is that while you
could get a car with power door locks, as far back as the 1960s, you
only saw those features (also power windows) on high end cars like
Lincolns and Cadillacs. The average car (Ford or Chevy, for example)
almost never had those features. Indeed not until the 1990s, did these
features (power windows and door locks) become common on cars in
general.

Rush says that the child safety locks (that would prevent a door
from being unlocked was not available until the 1980s. I didn't start
seeing them until the 1990s. First ones I saw were a little switch on
the car doors themselves that disabled the inside locks so that a kid
could not unlock and open the car door from the inside.

The point though is that back in the 1970s you could not get even
power door locks (the child safety feature did not exist then) only on
luxury cars. At that time Moore was fresh out of law school and had
just gotten a job working as an assistant DA in whatever town he was
living in. Where would he get the money to buy a Cadillac or Lincoln?

The questions not asked..... Ma'am, what kind of car was it? Did you try to lift the little golf tee shaped thing on top of the door and pull the handle?
In many cars back in the day, if you pulled the interior handle on the car door the car door would automatically UNLOCK!

========

No, there could be a function to that.

I've actually thought this might be the case after it came out. What if there was a specific target in mind for assassination at the concert, and the fact that other people were shot was done on purpose so as to make it seem as if it was a spree killing by a nut, and that no one in particular was being targeted?

For example, let's say a spy enters someone's house in order to steal a safe he knows contains important documents. He'll also steal some jewels and other valuables and trash the place to make it look like a common burglary. So if the spy's country is accused of espionage, they can say, "Nonsense! It was just a break-in, nothing to do with espionage".

341 263 I'm going to El Paso for Thanksgiving. Anyone know of things to do there?

Well, you can I fall in love with a Mexican girl. Go to Rosa's cantina, where Music will play and Felina will whirl. Blacker than night are the eyes of Felina, wicked and evil while casting a spell. Your love could be deep for that Mexican maiden. You'll be in love but you'll be able to tell. At night a wild young cowboy may come in, wild as the West Texas wind, dashing and daring, a drink he might share with wicked Felina, the girl that you could love. o in anger you could challenged his right for the love of this maiden. His hand might go down went his hand for the gun that he wore. Your challenge could be answered in less than a heartbeat, and the handsome young stranger would lie dead on the floor. So then just for a moment you could stand there in silence, shocked by the foul evil deed you did, and many thoughts could race through your mind as you stand there, so you would have but one chance and that would be to run. So out through the back door of Rosa's you could run out where the horses are tied. You could catch a good one, that looks like it can run, and get up on it's back and away you could ride as as fast asyou can from the West Texas town of El Paso out to the badlands of New Mexico. I mean, back in El Paso your life would be worthless, with everything's gone in life; nothing left. Then wait a long time since you saw the young maiden, and your love could be stronger than your fear of death. So then you could saddle up and away you go. Riding alone in the dark, maybe the next day, a bullet could find you, but while you are riding nothing will be worse than this pain in your heart. So when at last here you get on the hill overlooking El Paso, you'll see Rosa's cantina below. Your love might be strong and it could push me onward down off the hill to Felina.

Off to my right you'll see five mounted cowboys, and off to my left ride a dozen or more. Shouting and shooting, you can't let them catch you, so you have to make it to Rosa's back door. Something will be dreadfully wrong for you'll feel a deep burning pain in your side. Though you'll try to stay in the saddle. You'll get weary, unable to ride, but your love for Felina might be strong and you could rise from where you've fallen. Though you'll be weary you can't stop to rest. You could see the white puff of smoke from the rifle and feel the bullet go deep in your chest. Then from out of nowhere Felina could find you, kissing your cheek as she kneels by your side, cradled by two loving arms that you'll die for, one little kiss and Felina, goodbye.

Or you could get a guided tour.

347 What kind of car did Moore drive around then? I drove around an old ford LTD (shared with my sister) with power locks and can't really remember how the locks worked.
My Dad had a rather fancy company station wagon in the mid-seventies that definitely had some locks that could be pushed down and not easily pulled up. Once we had to lock the door to keep a family member from exiting the vehicle while it was cruising down the interstate, so I'm confused about all this can't lock a passenger in business.

Also I haven't heard any news of Roy Moore being a serial killer but Ted Bundy had rigged his car without much trouble to not open from within.

Not all locks popped when you pulled on the door handle. I I were a fifteen year old girl fighting off a guy with his hand on my neck I'm not sure how quickly I could have gotten out of the car. Which, by the way, I did more than once to escape a male who had the wrong impression of what I might be interested in, so I'm not really sure what is or isn't possible.

Yeah, I know we can come up with a scenario where everyone involved magically disappeared as soon as the shooting stopped, but really.

376 Power door locks, then and now, have a solenoid that is loosely connected to the lock linkage. Their action is only momentary, as long as the button is being pushed. Once the button is released, the lock's position can be changed manually at will. And if one were to keep the button pressed for long enough, the solenoid would burn out and blow a fuse.

One of the design considerations for the power lock system is that it cannot trap the occupants inside a wrecked or burning car.

how to turn off Cortana in Windows 10...

Even though I have all of the settings possible turned off on Cortana (voice recognition and tracking what you type - supposedly), it knew that I had a package coming to my house, and told me it can tell me when it will be delivered. I couldn't believe it.

So I disabled it today completely by fussing with the registry. I did create a RESTORE POINT before messing with the registry, just to be covered, and I seem to be having no issues after disabling Cortana on two laptops so far.

Here are the steps I took, and there is a link in this PC World article that brings you to a creating a restore point page, to ensure if you make a mistake, you can go back.

Posted by: JackStraw at November 15, 2017 10:53 AM (/tuJf)

I'll take your word for that, but I think that checking the details of the story is actually a fair point. If it could be determined that one element of the story is a complete fabrication or ridiculously implausible situation, then it can lead to other details being questioned. Tang memo standard.

After 40 years, there are few verifiable details, even especially since we can't ever find the actual specific car in questions. But in these cases, if the accuser is speaking the truth, they seek to give verifiable corroborative detail. If they are lying, they speaking in vagueness to avoid corroboration. The liar has to walks the line while the truth teller puts a large stake in the ground.
Otherwise we are back to the hit job standard of its the seriousness of the accusation that matters not the reasonableness of the claim. She claimed he locked her in the car. That's pretty specific, and its that specificity that is giving strength to the claim and its that specificity that should be tested.

The questions not asked......Ma'am can you please describe the car. bench or bucket seats. Stick shift, or automatic. was it his regular car or was this a new one to you? Meaning he borrowed or rented one?

430 Speaking of Moore - is that yearbook situation straightened out yet? I had taken the yearbook inscription as a given mildly inappropriate thing he had done, that seemed to bolster both his pestering of young girls at restaurants and that girl in particular.

I thought maybe the image CNN tweeted out had been distorted by photography because of lighting and angles and whatnot. Inks do sometimes shift color when photographed at different angles The explanation doesn't really satisfy because of other weirdnesses.

The "blue ink" part really does look like an addendum to an earlier inscription. I wasn't really buying the "'Roy'" looks like "Ray" look at the other vowels" expert(not) optnions until a very uncomfortable thunderbolt struck.

Is your old yearbook full of stupid rhymes? In my late seventies yearbook half the inscriptions are little verses and rhymes by people who liked me well enocugh by just didn't care enough about me to write something personal or just wanted to seem cute and clever and be remembered themselves.

It might explain the very quirky phrasing of the inscription which I first took as a sign that Roy Moore is certainly not good with words and probably half deranged as well as schmoozing inappropriately with young babes from the local high school.

To a sweeter (etc) girl I could not say/
Merry Christmas" 1977 - Ray

That doesn't mean the addendum is a hoax, even if it is an addendum.
Maybe he just appended his name to that post because he liked the sentiment, didn't get the rhyme, and thought he would just tack on his inscription to the girl - explaining the added date, and the different hand, and the different ink color.

Any way , TBveryH, I don't like Moore and would just as soon have it settled hes what they say. But that yearbook thing needs to be explained away.

442 >>>I'll take your word for that, but I think that checking the details of
the story is actually a fair point. If it could be determined that one
element of the story is a complete fabrication or ridiculously
implausible situation, then it can lead to other details being
questioned. Tang memo standard.

After 40 years, there are few
verifiable details, even especially since we can't ever find the actual
specific car in questions. But in these cases, if the accuser is
speaking the truth, they seek to give verifiable corroborative detail.
If they are lying, they speaking in vagueness to avoid corroboration.
The liar has to walks the line while the truth teller puts a large stake
in the ground.
Otherwise we are back to the hit job standard of its
the seriousness of the accusation that matters not the reasonableness of
the claim. She claimed he locked her in the car. That's pretty
specific, and its that specificity that is giving strength to the claim
and its that specificity that should be tested.

The questions not
asked......Ma'am can you please describe the car. bench or bucket
seats. Stick shift, or automatic. was it his regular car or was this a
new one to you? Meaning he borrowed or rented one?
.
.
.Well then the first accuser's story must be discounted as her own mother said she did not have a phone in her bedroom, the key fact in her entire story which enabled her to take a phone call from Moore and leave the house unseen by her mother.

One usually follows the other in these situations. If he was upstanding, he wouldn't have been near girls that age.

There's simply too many people coming forward, with colleagues and townspeople, even security guards saying this was known he trolled malls, etc.

493 Maritime - I just wish the yearbook business would get quickly cleared up.

I think he's every bit the creeper alleged, AND that the present attack is a carefully timed and cynical hit.

I actually still believe this woman was botherated by him, offered a "ride home," assaulted and that he drove off leaving her in a dark parking lot. Not the least because I was a teen in the late 70s, who didn't think much about ulterior motives of avuncular acquaintances of who would offer rides home or ride to work, and had a surprise necessitating escape. I had friends who had to fight off creeper dads driving them home from babysitting jobs. This seems possible to me, and the woman seemed to have been traumatized by it and ashamed of her stupidity, as I certainly was myself.

I'm wondering if Roy Moore just didn't append his yearbook sig onto someone elses. The guilty flee when none pursue, maybe he was asked to sign, but a bit conscious of his guilty intentions and that explains a choice ot append his sig to someone elses note?

I can't explain it but I wish someone would explain why it looks tacked on.

Posted by: josephistan at November 15, 2017 11:21 AM (7HtZB)
The point of that being "Ray" is that the first part is someone ELSE'S dopey yearbook inscription, some guy named "Ray" that she knew.So two ways to travel from there - Roy doesn't "get" the rhyme (or does, but close enough to "Roy") and appends his own name onto the earlier inscription. Odd thing to do, but maybe he agreed with the sentiment, and felt he could just adopt it, and/or he wanted to be able to say at some future date that she tacked it on herself. The guilty flee though none pursue, and he probably was aware that folks didn't take kindly to his trawling for teen dates.
The other way would be for her or someone else to append the original inscripttion to make it appear that Roy Moore signed her yearbook
