I wonder if the staff of that newspaper needs some lessons in poo-flinging, because I am just the monkey to do it! Duke Professor Bars Student Newspaper Staff from Enrolling in Her Course It is said the "sunlight is the best disinfectant." Clearly not at Duke, where a pompous ass of an economics professor has quite publicly proven her stupidity, parochialism, insularity, and ignorance of the proper function of academia.
“Anyone who is on the staff of The Chronicle is not permitted to take this class,” Hughes’ syllabus for her “Inside Hedge Funds” course reads. Students at the Chronicle, the student newspaper at Duke University, got ahold of the syllabus according to a report that was published on Monday, “Audio recordings of this class are not permitted and students will be asked to keep the information shared by some of our guest speakers confidential,” the full quote reads. “Anyone who is on the staff of the Chronicle is not permitted to take this class. Please honor this in order that we can continue to get high quality visitors and information.”Does professor Hughes really believe that some hedge fund manager is going to whisper the secrets of the financial universe to her and her class of undergraduates? Is her knowledge of the topic so profound that it must be zealously guarded from...uh...who is it being guarded from? When I was 18 and a callow youth I used to be impressed by professors. I was disabused of that notion rather quickly, and in the intervening years nothing has happened to change my opinion of academics; that they are, in the main, arrogant, narcissistic asses whose primary goal is to impress children. Duke's motto is "Eruditio et Religio,"...Learning and Religion. Professor Hughes got the "religion" part right...the religion of academia.

An epidemic of guns? What does that even mean? So we are to ignore the fact that homicides are on a long-term downtrend in spite of a huge increase in the number of guns owned by Americans? And just send the cops to random homes, break down the doors and confiscate whatever weapons they find? Sounds like a plan. But let's look at the reality. A small number of gun owners will fight. And that means dead cops and dead gun owners. My guess is that the resulting carnage will result in a huge increase in gun homicides, but that's sort of the plan, isn't it?

She took the required courses so she could teach and assume her role in the IT curriculum. Me, having 10+ years in IT at that point smelled a rat right away.

I think that takes a 2/3rds vote and I doubt they can get anything close to that. Its all just posturing, to claim virtue and out of fear of losing the women's vote.
But unless something a lot more severe comes out like 4 more girls all say he ravaged them in the dugout at the local ballpark then told them to put ice on it, I don't think it will cost any votes from women who might otherwise vote Republican.

Mitch was in cahoots with the WaPo outing of Moore. Even Chuck Todd picked up on this, as allies of Mitch decried Moore within the first hour of the WaPo story. Mitch is doing this as his response to Bannon's declaration of war on Mitch and the GOPe Senate.
I expect no more women to come forth, and little new facts to come out. We may find a money trail but I'd expect that it's been deeply buried. So the story will just hang.
Moore won't drop out -- he's ornery -- and he'll probably win the election. Mitch can't not seat him (so sayeth SCOTUS), but he can press a vote to expel him with the support of the Ds and the GOPe in the Senate.

We have two competing propositons, one propostion is that 40 years ago Roy Moore was an out of control sexual predator who simply stopped being a predator shortly after these supposed incidents occurred and that his politcial opponents of which he had many on both sides were not able to dig this up for some reason during the past 40 years until now after the primary when it is too late to replace him on the ballot.
Barring some compelling exculpatory evidence i say this entire thing is an op and total bullshit akin to what was tried against Trump.

I pass knowledge from the text and from life experiences to my students. I think that it works rather well too.
The fun part is I'm in the Business School and it is swamped this year by students seeking to transfer from other disciplines into something where they just might be able to make a living. Business, as they say, is booming.

Sorry to hear about your experience in higher ed with your professors. However, as someone who was a consumer and then currently as a prof, your experience is not universal. If I cared to, I could go on and on about the students, their morals, and their behavior.
Just like other people, professors vary in their approaches, their humanity, their wisdom, and their skills.
There is a reason that most of the really bad behavior and poor judgment in academia (apart from classroom rules) comes from the adjunct/temporary pool just as some contractors tend to be the one to misbehave in the military/national security field. They were screened out by somebody for full time status but for temps, the need is just to be there as a warm body.
Most of the professors are reluctant to allow recordings for several reasons--it is easy to take out of context, some organized campus groups such as frats and sororities distribute them among the members to avoid class, and it can involve violations of intellectual property which is all the professor has (same thing as bootlegging a musician). It also leads to tuning out by some students.
I allow audio recording in my classroom, probably against my better judgment, because I give essay tests that require students to problem solve and I change these every semester. I would not allow and do not allow video as it creates privacy issues as classrooms are not really public spaces--imagine if you were a student who asked a dumb question in class and it was distributed via social media. Audio would be bad enough but video would be permanent.
Anyone who showed up with Google glasses would be shown the door. Videoing people surreptitiously is generally a bad idea in a class period. To hide doing it also distracts the student from active participation in the classroom.
If you choose to do so, you can minimize your exposure to the hacks in academia just like in real life. It requires research on the student's part and discussions with other students. Ask senior students in the program--most will spill their guts for beer and pizza and dish on profs-good and bad Professors will vary in their approaches and purposes in the classroom and a bit of research into a professor can yield quite a bit of useful information about what your classroom experience is likely to be.
Some profs like acolytes, some play devil's advocate, some play the authoritarian, some play the sage on the stage, some play the fool, some like to buddy up with students, some view students as distractions from their research, a few are sociopaths, and some view their job as to cull out the weak and unworthy or the "bad thinkers". You find the same types teaching in your local middle and high schools as well.
Most of us in academia represent a mix of the above roles and a few are probably more pure in type. Nevertheless, I find little resemblance in my experiences as a student at a number of universities to what you present above.
In my humble experience, the worst experiences as a student personally were generally with those who came from elite school backgrounds who felt diminished by teaching at a not so elite school and lack any experiences outside of academia. Ironically, some of the leading lights in the profession at many of those schools were some of the most kind, thoughtful, and helpful within the profession regardless of their personal ideologies. To them, the ideas and truth are what matter, not so much the status climbing virtue signalling.

This. Also, early on in 39-40, the men were most often separated from the women and children, and either sent to work details in Germany, or shot right there. The women thought they had a chance to save their children by aquiescing. It was later that everyone was herded into the cars, but by this time, they had been starved and riddled with disease for so long that they were too weak to do anything. The Ghetto uprising was a last valiant effort as a group. The few that survived that went to the forests to join Resistance groups. But there weren't many left.

Are you serious? If I'm a professor, the ONLY reason I don't want my lectures recorded is because I know I'm crossing the line between the logically and academically defensible and indefensible. Because I know I would be forced to provide "context" to statements where there actually was no contextual loss, and I would be driven further into chaos. Recording college courses is a necessary first step in wiping out leftist indoctrination where there should be factual learning. Funny how it's only those otherwise worthless liberal arts courses that need to be hidden from the public view. If it's a public institution it should ALL be public access and public record regardless of what the professors want to keep hidden.

I had a different approach. I viewed my job as a travel guide, pointing out features of interest for later study (because that's where students actually learn things), showing the inter-relationships of the various ideas, and providing a verbal outline that subordinated lesser ideas to greater ones (pet peeve: when lecturers present all ideas as equally important, the intellectual equivalent of flat-filing).
But all of that was strictly as an intro, the subliminal message being "But to learn it you have to take this travel guide, go home/to the library and get on top of this stuff."

Some faculty (usually in the arts) used to agonize over slacking students. Not me. I used to joke, somebody's got to make those lattes - thank you for volunteering. If you can ace this course without attending lecture or doing the reading, I salute you.
My perspective was that the students were adults, and could make their own decisions. I enjoyed teaching, and tried to do a good job, but it was maybe 10% of my job. Running a research group, hustling grant money, publishing, giving seminars, organizing symposia, etc. was my main focus.
Timmy's decided to fart around? Why would I worry? Is he worried that I won't get a grant renewed and will have to fire some postdocs? No. Of course not. He's got his concerns, I've got mine. As long as I'm doing a good job teaching, I figure I've held up my end of the deal vis a vis him.

In the 70's, guys drove their trucks to school and parked them in the school lot. They all had gun racks behind the driver and they all had at least one on the rack. Nobody every thought a thing about it.
They still have rifle ranges in the basements of the high schools here. At least the schools that were here then. Some still use them for archery. I don't think they still use the air rifles at the schools, but they do offer rifle team, and I think they practice at a local range.

Well, since our Armed Forces were drawn down by Fredo, and since we don't really have huge deployments in combat zones today we are not over extended. But we are under trained and maintained.
And each Service has Different Standards and Recruiters have Standards all of their own . LOL

Well, since our Armed Forces were drawn down by Fredo, and since we don't really have huge deployments in combat zones today we are not over extended. But we are under trained and maintained.
And each Service has Different Standards and Recruiters have Standards all of their own . LOL

Maybe. But one of the reasons listed by Rosenstein for firing Comey was his going public with confidential investigations. Sessions just reiterated it during the hearing.

The thing that amazes me is the level of delusion that people have regarding the effectiveness and strength of the modern state. I would argue in some ways the modern state is weaker than the Empire the colonists rebelled against 240 years ago. The modern state depends heavily on a complex military and intelligence apparatus that would be heavily compromised if even just 5% of it were to become moles. US infrastructure is in terrible shape, and a few well placed guerilla strikes would cause complete and total chaos and disruption of the power grid, food and gas transportation, and commerce. Thousands upon thousands of miles of bridges and railways which would need to be secured by a military whose combat troops number in the hundreds of thousands.
Then there's the question of credit and financing for some sort of counter-rebellion campaign and the interests of foreign powers. You think China and Russia wouldn't be all over funding revolutionaries under the table while they got busy in eastern Europe and the South China Sea? How many thousands of miles of unguarded coast are there?
Hundreds of millions of guns, a military whose grunt force is largely right-leaning, a massive middle part of the country (the bread basket and massive chunk of land crisscrossed by vulnerable interstate roads, bridges, and railways), and a government that is so inefficient it can't even find time to repair the interstate or seal our southern border let alone our coasts.

I think it's happening but not as fast as I would like and certainly it isn't being written about it as much in the media. But what Sessions is doing right now is undoing the unlawful practices of the last 8 years by following the law and rules that the DOJ was always bound by pre-Obama.
As for things happening, it really isn't getting much press but the downfall of the Podesta Group, one of if not the biggest Democrat lobbying and power bases in DC is dead and John Podesta is still under investigation. That will do enormous damage to the left going forward.
Fusion GPS has been exposed as a corrupt manufacturer of fake news with ties to the left and to the media. They are also under investigation and for all intents finished even if they don't go to jail which is a real possibility.
And I do believe that in addition to the 27 leak investigations that Sessions mentioned today their are indeed ongoing investigations into Uranium One and lots of things the Clintons and others were doing. My family used to use the dolls as sacrifices in various historical reenactments. Barbie on fire in the kiddie pool in a vaguely 'Viking' ceremony. I think they gave up trying to get Ken dolls, and everything burned, blown up, or slung in the trebuchet were barbies. In order to get food and resources into cities, the railway card and trucks still have to travel on the interstate and railway systems. Cities are powered by power plants, lines, and substations. Police aren't military (yet). I don't think beat cops will be doing their jobs with any regularity in the hypothetical we're supposing (revolution/ at least partial breakdown of order).
I get your point about the military, perhaps I was being too charitable. Even assuming a minute number of them misbehave in any way, it takes a large psychological/morale toll to fire on your fellow citizens. And a few hundred thousand soldiers to police a nation-state where a good chunk of the population is rebelling? Seems a fat chance they'd be successful.
Again, I'm assuming in this hypothetical that a solid chunk of people, 30% are outright trying to bring about some kind of revolution.
Regarding the South- I think they may have won had they refrained from attacking at all. Their adventures in the north leading to Gettysburg were a mistake.
