A Little of This. A Little of That.

I found this a couple weeks ago. It is a Georgian-language documentary (with subtitles) about both the Caucasian Sheepdogs which guard the flocks and the wolves which try steal away sheep when they can.

Sheepdogs vs wolves.

They never actually get a fight on camera, but they do make it pretty obvious that good sheepdogs are worth their weight in gold to the shepherds. I found it very interesting.

Hi y'all!

Here are some more pictures - the big blonde is my Cheyenne (her first fishing trip, she thought everything my husband caught was for her) and the brown one is Zeus. He's my daughter and son-in-law's dog, actually a half brother to Cheyenne and they brought him home a week after they brought home my latest granddaughter. He's a sweetie, but growing so fast!!!
Thanks for the Pet Thread - best part of the weekend for me! -antisocialist

Cute photos. It appears they live a miserable life and are so abused.
Thanks for sharing!!

Howdy.

Maggie (L) and Murray (R) on their way to the park. They loved going to the park and practically ran through the kitchen door when I jingled my keys. Maggie is going to be seven in November, Murray I lost to heart disease at 13 years 4 months this last New Years Eve morning. He was a good boy and a great companion and I miss him very much. Now Maggie shadows me wherever I go. -No Nic given.

Thank you for the story of Maggie and Murray. Quite the pair of pups.

23 Buster reminds me of my brother's chocolate lab Tia.

Our dad had gone to a fancy charity thing, gotten liquored up, and bid on a silent auction item that he didn't want but wound up winning--a female lab pup. Anyway, my brother and his family happily took possession and she was both a sweet pet and a talented retriever.

One thing I didn't like was when we were out hunting quail all day and waited until we got back to the house to clean them. Quail guts are horribly smelly. Somehow Tia gained access to where we'd dumped the guts. She ate most of them, then came inside and harfed them up on the rug as we were enjoying our cocktails. Oh well, we wouldn't even have gotten some of those quail without her, so it was all good. Her nickname was Quail Guts for awhile though.

A salute this November 11th to our canine veterans, who guarded, detected, warned, protected and comforted our soldiers and Marines. Their story is a bittersweet one: until recently they were abandoned or put down after their service. Now they have the chance to go and with the humans with whom they served.

42 It's f*cking freezing out there beyond the walls.

Same here, after an unseasonably warm October. I plugged in the heating element in the kittehs' bed and they are enjoying the warmth-- both of them at the same time.

This being Veterans Day, I hope it is okay to post a remembrance of the millions of animals who served (and suffered and died) alongside humans in war. The link below goes to a website called Purr 'n Fur.uk, and the specific page is about the Animals in War Memorial in London, with a closeup of the cat on the sculpture. Also other photos of the memorial itself, a similar memorial in Australia, and other remembrances of the horses, dogs, birds, mules, and other animals who gave their all alongside their humans.

43 Had a pleasant surprise this week. We took Prince the poodle to the groomer for the first time since we got him. (He was pretty well skinned by the rescue folks because he was so matted.) The groomer is a young guy, mid-30s maybe, with a beard and tattoos. Turns out he's a retired Marine, he and his wife have two little girls, one just a few weeks old. Mrs. JTB noticed tats on his fingers: 1861 on the left and 1865 on the right. He's a Civil War reenactor. While he was working on the dog he and I had a great conversation about black powder guns.

You can meet such nice and interesting people through your pets.

Several weeks go by, and I finally get over to see the fixed-up apartment. Mike, her cat, dives under the covers, like he's never seen me before in his life.

This after four years of our bounty, during which he daily harrassed our two cats and generally behaved like an ass.

55 It might have been on a Pet Thread, but I read somewhere about a service dedicated to getting retired service dogs adopted.

I'm not sure about retired service dogs, but I do know Tony La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation has a special program called Pets for Vets that matches carefully chosen dogs from shelters with vets with PTSD. Dogs have been shown to help such veterans to heal from the depression and other symptoms of traumatic stress. Details about the program here:

http://tinyurl.com/yb5tqfuj

La Russa also deserves kudos for his work as a cat guy, showing that real men can love cats as well as dogs. It's one reason why every time a cat gets loose on the field during a baseball game, one of the announcers will usually say, "Where's Tony La Russa when you need him?"

I have the same question. Given that police K-9s who are killed in the line of duty or die in retirement are given full honors at their funerals, it seems odd to treat canine vets so badly. OTOH, we all know how poorly the VA treats human vets.

78 Well military dogs stay in the field as their handlers get sent home after their 12 months or whatever of combat deployment. The military is now more inclined to let a handler adopt a dog who needs to retire but can still be comfortable as just a pet.

And yes I had read that in WW2 they recruited from civilian dogs and were afraid that they would not be safe back with families and so many were euthanized after the war was over. I think there is even an old Elizabeth Tayler movie about a family petitioning to get their dog returned to them.

96 Had a bit(!) of a scare earlier today. Hubby spotted a white cat outside, and I hurried (as much as I can, these days) out front, terrified that my Ghost had somehow gotten out. He's been an inside cat since I got him at (maybe) 5 months old and semi-feral.

When I got out front, though, the cat had disappeared, and given the night-time wild-life here in the Piney Woods, after I spent some time calling and whistling, I went back inside, and found him on the bed.

Needless to say, I was greatly relieved, and he got a large treat!

111 I have read a lot of stories of military dogs, other vets who deserve our gratitude

Lest we forget an older war: there were lots of animal mascots during the Civil War. In addition to dogs, soldiers on both sides had pets in camp that included toads, cats, donkeys, even camels, owls, bears, eagles, raccoons, badgers, squirrels, wildcats, and pelicans. Robert E. Lee had a pet hen who laid fresh eggs for him, and Abraham Lincoln was known for his love of cats. Here's an article about Civil War mascots, including Old Abe the Battle Eagle (aka the "Yankee Buzzard"), several famous dogs, a bear, a camel named Old Douglas, and many others.

The look of the town in that movie reminded me of the city I grew up in, Dayton Ohio, when I was a small child. It was a very nice city then. As a ten year old, I could ride all over the city on the trolley buses, and felt perfectly safe, and it didn't bother my parents. Of course, it's all been washed away. I can remember people mowing their lawns with push reel mowers (We had one I tried to use as a kid. Too hard).
It makes me sad to watch that movie, for a number of reasons. My parents generation, all gone now. Reminds me of the city I grew up in, all changed now, for the worse.

People in that movie, that was the way it was 65-70 years ago. Really.

"Fury" is a good movie, just somewhat depressing, as real war was. Pretty graphic. It's just that all the actors in it are too old.
There was a "mock-up"Tiger used in the one battle scene. But they did let them use the only running Tiger for a couple of segments of the scene, where the Tiger is maneuvering independently.
Shia LeBeuf is an a-hole as a person, but he is a good actor.

Some of the saddest battlefield photos I have ever seen are those that show the appalling number of horses killed in war. Alexander Gardner's photos of the Gettysburg battlefield after the third day are heartrending, likewise photos of the French roads through the Falaise pocket in August 1944. The Wehrmacht depended on horse transport even more than tanks, and Eisenhower is reported to have said that he could walk for several miles on the bodies of the horses killed in that battle.

I used them as a kid. They still sell them, but I'm not sure of the quality of the new ones. I still own one of the best push mowers ever sold, a Clemson E16. They had cast magnesium side plates, with a large diameter piece of steel tubing to link together across the front, resulting in a very light, but also very stiff structure. Stiffness is a good thing in reel mowers (as in uh, other things), because it allows the clearance between the reel blades and bed knife to be set precisely, permitting them to cut without drag that causes needless effort. That machine is a precision instrument, and should only be used on a fine patch of lawn. I do my actual mowing with a riding mower, and various walk-behind rotaries.

186 and UGA is still in a tough spot down 3 scores. I was hoping for a battle of the undefeated in Atlanta but I guess not now.

Heh. Y5 is always going on about pandas, who he derides for being unenthusiastic about breeding. Gu-gu will probably be up for it, now.

That panda "Gu-gu" is a leg biter the article says.

Still not as dangerous as your average Hollywood producer, though.

Yea, Alabama! Drown 'em Tide!
Every 'Bama man's behind you,
Hit your stride.
Go teach the Bulldogs to behave,
Send the Yellow Jackets to a watery grave.
And if a man starts to weaken,
That's a shame!
For Bama's pluck and grit have
Writ her name in Crimson flame.
Fight on, fight on, fight on men!
Remember the Rose Bowl, we'll win then.
Go, roll to victory,
Hit your stride,
You're Dixie's football pride,
Crimson Tide, Roll Tide, Roll Tide!!

....

True. The article is hysterical, saying GuGu has a "troubled past and a history of violence", like he'd just shot up a church. Jeez, he's a wild animal. He GETS to bite idiot tourons who're dumb enough to jump into his enclosure and hug him. It's allowed.

Lovely pictures of our fine FLOTUS.
