This is "Mac", a neighborhood cat that has several homes and owns several families, including ours. We feed him well and let him sleep inside during the day if he wants. The neighbors who care for him coordinate to be sure someone is around if others are away for the weekend, and to get him flea drops and other regular cat maintenance. >>>Oh-oh, not a good sign, It looks like we all like dogs more than people.
Cats like their owners better than other cats. Why should it be surprising that humans empathize with dogs more than with fellow humans? I'm not saying that it's good, or that this emotion should be acted upon (ex. if there were a situation in which you could rescue either a human or dog), just that it's not surprising. I don't know. I've never tried to feed her chips of any kind. -- When we first got our cat, she was about 2. My Mom would try to feed her random things, and it was hysterical. The cat would slowly and cautiously walk over to my Mom's hand and the food, as if she was approaching a live grenade. Quasi pet related. Her Majesty is finishing her second and final term as a Regional Governor for the Borzoi Club of America. After six years of dedication she's turning it over to someone else. She has been in the breed for 46 years. She has bred and shown to #1 ranking two dogs - Lacey and Dutch - handling them herself in every show. Recently Dan and Finn finished their championships in less than 10 shows. Any one of her exhibits can win with justice in any show. You would think with a record like hers that some of her competitors would ask her advice on breeding, training, grooming and showing. Yet no one ever does. Truly the capacity of people to justify themselves without questions is virtually unlimited. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at November 04, 2017 05:32 PM (C16Ph) 142

Gimli's Gone - Friday afternoon I stand on the porch and survey our acres, the acres Gimli knew were his. His territory, as his Queen had taught him. From possum to coyote, cross onto Gimli's territory at your own risk. Deer he tolerated, sort of. All others, beware. And I thought: Who will protect us now? Who will defend us? Who will own us and teach us now? * There's no dog nosing the front door open, looking in, and then walking away, as if to say, "come out and play!" Or, as it sometimes seemed, nosing the door open for one of the cats. (more)... Posted by: mindful webworker at November 04, 2017 05:59 PM (rNruR) 228

Gimli's Gone - Saturday morning thoughts
He was always good at the vet's. He liked the old guy (now retired) and the new gal doctors, and they all liked him. He was always completely cooperative, except for standing on the scale; he never cared for that much. On the way to the vet's we passed a billboard I had never seen before, for a pet crematory. Talk about targeted advertising! When we got to the vet's yesterday morning, he knew where we were, and he struggled to get up and walk in on his own, but we had to bring out a cart and roll him in. After that, he just laid there. I'm pretty sure he knew he was among friends. Even the old doc happened to be in, buying dog food, and got to see Gimil once more. Milady and I, our daughter, and the in-town son (he who, fifteen years ago, was sent out to "chase off that stray dog"), surrounded his bed. He was that great dog all the way to the end. No complaints. He was looking at me, and then there were lifeless eyes. When that Light goes out, it's over. I had to go take a little walk outside before anything else. His collar hangs on the front porch. His smells (good old dog fur, and sickly excretions) still hang around, especially on the front porch where he spent his last hours. I savor it, knowing how quickly it will fade. Not so quickly: stains inside and on the cement porch. Fur, lots of fur, and he was really shedding at the end. Sheets to wash. Old dog mat thrown out. His big food dish... stuck with other retired dog dishes. His favorite blanket... we left with him. Took a walk around the circle drive this morning. First time in ages there was no dog to walk with me. There's a hole in the universe where The Best Dog Ever isn't anymore. ...1more?... Gimli's Gone
...When Gimli first showed up, Neighbor Bob described him as "not knowin' sic-em from c'mere," and it was true. House-trained, though. So house-trained he always did his biz out in the tall grass, not the lawn. Yesterday, after the vet's, the four of us went out for a memorial-celebratory breakfast at the local greasy spoon. Neighbor Bob and his son-in-law showed up there about the time we were done - an extremely unlikely coincidence. Seemed appropriate. Bob always called Gimli by the name my brother's dog had, when brother lived here forty-plus years ago. "Rattler" was a better country-dog name than Gimli, I admit. * I take a walk. No dog runs to join me. The cat food bowls have food left in them. No dog to clean up after them. I open the side door on the car. No dog rushes to jump in. He loved to go places. The vet I worked for used to try to talk people out of big procedures unless absolutely necessary. His thing was to start as small and simple as possible, and if that didn't work, go a step up. Of course life-threatening conditions were different. But he didn't like people spending needless money. He was a very frugal person himself and hated wasting money - his or someone else's.

I had a beagle once, he had a slipped disc. Found out because he would wake up screeching. What he was doing was holding his spine in such a way that it did not pinch the disc - but he would fall asleep and relax and then boom the pain hit, he would wake up screeching. It was hard on him, he couldn't get sleep, it was hard on us watching him and hearing him in pain.
Took him to the vet and they sent me to the major pet hospital here - choices were to pay $1100 for arthroscopic surgery to look down his spine and see what was wrong (they thought, but did not know it was a disc), pay $1700 and have them do the scope and then the surgery at the same time, presuming it was the disc - do the $1100 scope and then $1500 for the surgery at a later date - or put him to sleep. I could not stand the idea of killing my dog because his back hurt. We were in a position to do it, so we had the surgery done. He got another 3 and half good years. I asked the techs behind the desk what owners did that could not afford it - they pointed out that there are payment plans (flyers for a finance company - I am sure many signed up for the loans). But did not point out the obvious - I figure there are many who don't choose the surgery. And I am sure there are plenty who would do it if they could, but they can't. We adopted WeaselCatv2 from the shelter as a kitten and about a week later she got very sick. We rushed her to the animal hospital and they put her in the Kitty ICU for a couple of days to treat a lung parasite. The bill was something like $1,800 for a cat that we probably hadn't even named yet. We paid it and brought her home. I explained to WeaselWoman that perhaps the reason we ended up with her is because we had the resources and faith to take care of her when she needed it.

People in Istanbul love their the community cats, and some go really out of their way to take care of them. HIGHLY recommend the film, especially for cat lovers.
Yeah, there are cats everywhere there. Pompei had dogs everywhere. Even saw one laying on the "CAVE CANEM" mosaic, which isn't bad advice because they're apparently feral. You have to "love" people -- the responses to the girl singing to her new rescue dog. One silly woman saying the way the dog's being held is "scary" for them -- the dog looked *SO* terrified. Then the inevitable Muslim warning of the "dangers" of owning dogs... Posted by: Rob Crawford at November 04, 2017 06:56 PM (fVubI) 377

category fail - turn in your moron card for a week. Posted by: DaveA at November 04, 2017 06:05 PM (FhXTo) How's it a category fail? Posted by: Insomniac - Existential Vacuum Salesman at November 04, 2017 06:09 PM (NWiLs) ++++ The Outlaw Josey Wales, while being a Western, was not a spaghetti Western. The term "spaghetti Western" referred to movies directed by Sergio Leone and shot in Italy. He would use Hollywood actors for the big roles, but local talent for the smaller roles. He would also have the non-English speaking actors just say their lines in their native language and then overdub their lines in editing. Since Leone wasn't involved in Josey Wales and it wasn't shot in Italy, it was just a plain old Western. Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at November 04, 2017 07:02 PM (FUu/Z) 386
