Matt Damon and George Clooney: Goodness Us, We Never Heard a Blessed Thing About Weinstein's Misbehavior (Except for the Things We Did Hear About)

They're out promoting a film Damon stars in and Clooney directed. Both men's careers were boosted by Harvey Weinstein. Both are saying they didn't know anything about his reputation of rape and assault and creeping, admitting only to knowing of vague "womanizing."

The trouble with that claim is, as John Sexton notes, Damon is also admitting to knowing more than that -- but he gets very, very vague about it.

"I knew the story about Gwyneth from Ben because he was with her after Brad [Pitt], so I knew that story," Damon said Monday on ABC News. "I never talked to Gwyneth about it, Ben told me. But I knew that they had come to whatever, you know, agreement or understanding that they had come to, she had handled it. She was, you know, the first lady of Miramax. And he treated her incredibly respectfully."

Rose McGowan "came to an understanding" with Weinstein, and "handied it." That doesn't mean the complained of behavior didn't happen. And not even Matt Damon's too stupid to think it means that.

John Sexton points out something very important: Even if Matt Damon believed that Gwenyth Paltrow had just "handled it" with Weinstein, why did he undertake to help spike a story about Harvey Weinstein's sexual misbehavior with another woman knowing that -- whether "handled" or not -- it was mostly likely true?

Two weeks ago, former New York Times reporter Sharon Waxman (now at The Wrap) wrote that Damon helped get her 2004 exposé on Weinstein scrubbed. Waxman got calls from Damon and Russell Crowe personally to tube a story that tied Fabrizio Lombardo, then heading Miramax’s Italian unit, to Weinstein’s sexual appetite and about a payoff to a woman who had accused Weinstein of non-consensual sexual behavior. Damon claimed he was just asked to talk about Lombardo’s work for Miramax, not anything to do with Weinstein.

However, he already knew about Weinstein’s sexual harassment of Paltrow by this time. She married Coldplay frontman Chris Martin in 2003, having ended the relationship with Affleck in 2000. If Waxman was writing about Weinstein in 2004, then Damon had an important piece of information -- or at least knew enough to refrain from running interference on a sex scandal at Miramax.

I can't steal everything from Sexton so read about James Toback, now accused by 38 women of First Degree Creepstering, including Weinstein-like rubbing and ejaculating on nonconsenting women, and James Gunn's attempts to warn everyone he knew about him.

It's another filthy-grubby story proving again that while Washington is Hollywood for ugly people, Hollywood is also Hollywood for ugly people.

Sexton links a particularly distressing account from an actress named Sari Kamin. Read that, if you can stomach it.

It gets worse as it goes on. Let me know at which point you tapped out.

6 The "casting couch" is where a gatekeeper can make demands on someone who desires to pass through the gate and get a chance at wealth and celebrity. In the case of Weinstein the demands were kinky and sexual.

Others no doubt also make sexual demands the price of getting past the gate and into employment which can lead to wealth and power. This type of "casting couch" demand is now being exposed for the tawdry demands of the powerful gatekeeper on the less powerful.

But there is another "casting couch" where the demands are not sexual. They are political. Get your mind right or you don't get past this gate. Even major stars have to toe the line here. Especially if your stardom is fading. Spread-eagle yourself on this couch and your prospects brighten.

Yeah, I'm looking at you both Matt and George. You both spread wide for the Left's long hard one.

56 The entertainment business is filled with predator sociopaths. The actors and actresses know it and have dealt with it to advance their careers. Because they are all a lot of clinical narcissists.
Their own self-love precludes them from making a critical judgement about right and wrong regarding the people that open the doors to their careers.

Clooney and Damon are both asses. They know ALL ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED surrounding Weinstein and others just like him.
They will never squeal out, because their careers would dry up, or they just might get killed.
There are a lot of rich and powerful people in Hollywood that are just awful people.
No wonder they all loved Bill Clinton.

Statute of Limitations for criminal charges has passed.

But libel / slander statute of limitations wouldn't start running until he said something.

So, he'd be in a bind -- without a criminal conviction (which is impossible at this point), he's going to face an uphill battle proving the allegations are true when whoever he accuses has millions of dollars to throw at lawyers.

So, likely, he'd end up bankrupt and still losing the case against him.

77 The other thing that pisses me off about this narrative is people like Gwyneth Paltrow were EXTREMELY powerful people. Her parents were both established in Hollywood (father a producer, mother an actress) and even her godfather was Steven Spielberg. Had she said something, Weinstein would have probably been nuked back in the 90's.

It once again goes back to the fact that these women were willing to do ANYTHING to just keep and expand their star power, even if it meant a predator got to keep feeding.

All of these people like Damon, Paltrow, Clooney, Affleck etc knew and continued to work with Weinstein, but he was someone else's problem.

Also, isn't it a little ironic that almost all of the really outspoken liberals in Hollywood are tight with Weinstein?

Then I read this article. Seems that every day is a birthday for Uncle Harvey, and Matt and George say *CHECK* *CHECK*.

But, yeah, I'm sure it's just a violation or minor misdemeanor in LA to possess small amounts of weed. So, maybe some basic processing, a ticket, and a PR (or really low cash) bond.

100 77 The other thing that pisses me off about this narrative is people like Gwyneth Paltrow were EXTREMELY powerful people.

This. Times 1000.

The same goes for Asia Argento: her dad is a famous director and she had a 5 year relationship with Weinstein. No sympathy here ( nor in Italy: she was laughed out of Italy and had to retreat to Germany because people were making fun of her, saying her agreement was more like prostitution than abuse.) I loathe the smug Mr. Clooney and there is a LOT of gossip about his proclivities. May he be the next target of the self-destructing left.

If he was picked up in LA, I'd agree 100%. But I think he was arrested in Louisiana or somewhere like that where possession of weed is still, apparently, illegal; and where there are close to zero ties betwixt the police and Hollywood.

So I think just a coincidence. Frankly, we probably never would have heard about it if his name wasn't already in the news.

As an aside -- I thought he claimed to be clean and sober since the other Corey died? Or does he just mean "not shooting heroin and snorting coke anymore?"

He was driving his RV and got pulled over for speeding. Had a suspended license, so was taken in. Vehicle was searched, pot found. He claims it was medical, not his, belonging to two of the passengers, They did not have their prescription on them. Fines issued and paid. He wasn't jailed.

It's a big nothing mostly brought about by extreme stupidity. Don't drive on a suspended license. If you do that, don't speed. If you must do that, don't have pot in your vehicle in a state where pot is illegal. And, if you absolutely must do all that, at least carry your prescription for the allegedly prescription marijuana.

During the "Senior Year" segment, a sleazy-looking guy runs into her at a coffee shop, and talks her into auditioning for his new film. She shows up at the audition, which is in a seedy apartment, with Sleazy Guy as the whole production crew. He pressures her into taking off her shirt & starts filming her as she weeps.

Here's the thing: Weinstein has tried to pass of his bad behavior as being a consequence of having lived in the 60s and 70s when standards were "different". ++++

Counting cards is not illegal or cheating, *unless* you are using something mechanical to do it. They busted some celebrity overseas for using his chips to keep track of the count. Obviously, anything involving people helping you is also cheating.

Yes, they first get suspicious if you win too much. That gets their attention, so then they start paying close attention to see if you are up to something. If you keep winning too much, they may decide not to allow you to play anymore, even if you aren't cheating. But, they can't take your winnings or have you arrested if they didn't catch you cheating.

Missouri and New Jersey outlawed card counting in their state's gambling joints., for example. I don't know about Nevada.

In the past, Nevada would just kick you out for it... as the Law is that they can kick anyone out, for any, or no, reason at all.

But card counting is really killed by having 4 or 5 deck shoes, and using the auto shufflers after 1 or 2 decks.... which EVERY place in Nevada does...

I used to count in grad school, and it's easy to spot another counter.

First, most people are retarded, and play like horses' asses (splitting 5s, etc.; I once saw a guy double down on 12 "for luck"). Anyone who doesn't do stupid shit stands out immediately.

Second, anyone whose decisions to hit/stand on given hands (e.g., 16 vs. say an 8 showing) is likely to be counting, and to know that the remaining deck is face card rich.

Third, anyone whose bets parallel the face card richness of the deck is a dead cert to be a counter.

When you're counting, you can spot other counters a mile off for these reasons.

A grad school buddy and I were once busted in Tahoe around 3 am. Our game was strong; we could easily chat and joke and maintain the count without obvious effort by just glancing at the table.

A pitboss came over and asked, "Are you guys playing Revere or Thorpe?" We pretended we didn't know what he was talking about.

"Don't insult my intelligence."

We admitted we were playing Revere. He remonstrated with us that we were doing all this work and should just have fun, but after a while was impressed that we maintained the count throughout this colloquy. Finally he told the dealer to let us play, as long as we played at our current frugal level (as befitted a couple of impecunious grad students).

Phew. Boy, were we relieved. That was back in the era when The Mob ran things. See, e.g., "Casino."

That's true, but counters can also be pissed at a retard at first base for inexplicably taking hits that adversely affect the composition of the deck.

Suppose the deck is face card poor, the dealer has a face card showing, and a couple retards take seven hits apiece to bust their hands, and NOW the deck is face card rich, i.e., the dealer is likely to draw out on the remaining people.

Counters know what just happened, and are annoyed.

Assuming an infinite deck ... 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, 10, 10, 10, 5.5 for Ace.

Why is the assumption that the down card is a 10 ?

It looks like average is around 7 to me. I have made moderate amounts of money playing this way. Why am I wrong ? I assume I am ... but don't know why.

Casinos make a lot of money for state. Thus they have lots of say in gambling laws.

218 That's true, but counters can also be pissed at a retard at first base for inexplicably taking hits that adversely affect the composition of the deck.

Suppose the deck is face card poor, the dealer has a face card showing, and a couple retards take seven hits apiece to bust their hands, and NOW the deck is face card rich, i.e., the dealer is likely to draw out on the remaining people.

Counters know what just happened, and are annoyed.

I recollected the scene in 'Oh God', where George Burns says , "People say that 'Only God can make a tree', well a tree is really pretty easy, try to make a mackerel."

Someone who takes an unwarranted hit on such a deck can take the dealer's bust card. Several people doing that can materially affect the probability of the dealer busting.

So in some cases the Hollywood elites were clearly engaged in criminal activity - rape, sexual harassment, etc...but in some cases these people are engaged in perfectly legal activity - like sex for a role.

Traditionally western civilization put a soft ban on that - companies would fire you if they thought you were doing it and you would be drummed out of polite company....though Hollywood from the beginning had no problem with it. Probably because acting doesn't require much skill, and for most roles you really could pick anyone.

So what is the end game here? Suppose Hollwyood goes the full Mike Pence and no more hanky panky in casting. Is the left going to be happy when the pretty girl route to stardom ends? It will be just more nepotism I presume.

Note, I have no problem with Hollywood finding a few scruples for once here...but I don't see how they are going to like any potential outcome of this...

Yeah ... this is where I depart from most gamblers. Never believed in playing "expected pot odds" in Texas Hold 'Em either.

I always play each card as a new probability event - and adjust accordingly. I tend to win small.

But I could see adjusting odds, on the fly, based upon that 1.5 win percentage ... depending on my cards. But if I'm holding twelve ... I'll continue to play given an average expected card of 7.

Posted by: ScoggDog at October 23, 2017 08:48 PM (fiGNd)

A couple answers.

First, there is no threshold. In counting, you use the deck composition to modulate your bet size in proportion to how that composition favors the player.

So the more 10-rich a deck, which favors the player (because he gets paid 3/2 for blackjack, and who can split 10s and hit two more 10s, or double down and hit a 10, i.e. can change his bet after seeing his cards), the larger the bet. The variation in bet size is effectively continuous (although that stands out).

To your second point, back in the day, casinos used to use a single deck. The swings in composition in a single deck can be HUGE. If you're counting, when you get to the end of deck, in some cases you KNOW there are only face cards or no face cards left. That's a huge advantage in playing your hand/ modulating your bet size.

Nowadays, with 17 decks, and shuffles halfway through, the swings in composition are minuscule. Which is why casinos do that.

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at October 23, 2017 08:55 PM (YqDXo)

275 And tying this all together, Ben Affleck has been banned for life from playing blackjack at a Vegas casino. Man also has a massive alcohol problem too. He's not innocent in any way, but he's got problems. Would be interesting to know what caused them.

Why try to do something like that when you know the odds are purposely stacked against you?

No wonder they hate men. They don't know any.

287 But I could see adjusting odds, on the fly, based upon that 1.5 win percentage ... depending on my cards. But if I'm holding twelve ... I'll continue to play given an average expected card of 7.
Posted by: ScoggDog at October 23, 2017 08:53 PM (fiGNd)

Here's the problem: the most likely card - a 10 - busts your hand. The cards 2-5 merely give you another stiff, in fact a worse stiff than you had with a 12. (Because there are fewer cards to make your hand.) A 6 or 7 gives you 18 or 19, which is a losing hand if the dealer has a face card showing. Only a 9 will make your hand.

The crucial consideration is what the dealer has. If the dealer has a 6 showing, stand on 12; the dealer most probably has 16, which he has to hit, and which he most likely will bust. So you don't chance busting any hand in that case.

No, I don't think that's right. A whale is a guy who bets big, not someone who wins. The reason the casinos give him all the comps is to get this big better to play at their joint instead of a competitor's.

Even if the whale wins, they want him to keep on playing, figuring that sooner or later, the odds will win and the whale will lose.

I get that.

I've done some two-card projections ... using the long-hand combinations and permutions ... without splitting ... to tried and project those odds. But there are SO MANY possibilities.

The corrolary to what you say ... as I see it ... is that a 10, although the most LIKELY card (4/13 possibilities) ... still isn't a PROBABLE card.

Thanks. My buddies and I in grad school spent years studying math (as part of our studies in physics and chemistry), and decided to make use of it in a ... more practical context. Back in the day, I used to practice by putting on both the radio and the TV (for distraction), and burn through a deck of cards in 40 seconds, literally as fast as I could deal, after which I could tell you what cards were left.

Can't do it anymore, through lack of practice, age, and (ahem) Scotch, but those were good days.

Revere basically detuned Thorp a bit, thereby simplifying it enough to allow one to make betting and card-playing decisions in real time.

After eight hours of playing we used to be so wired from concentrating that we couldn't sleep. We'd go over to the poker tables, just to watch, and we'd have the count from every card that hit the table. We couldn't stop.

It was actually kind of scary. But it's how we could talk with people, then glance around the table, and have the count, without obvious effort. Counting was kind of like ... driving.

I know the law of large numbers pretty much gives the same odds that either red or black will come up but what is the statistical probability that the same color will come up 9 or 10 times in a row? Yeah still the law of large numbers. I wonder what the record is of the same color . I also know this is the reason the casino puts up the board. To get those suckers , including me to bet. I've done this a couple of times and broke even once and won 500 once. It takes too much time though for the table to be ready for a bet.

376 I saw a short interview with Tony Goldwyn. Yep, related to the giants of the golden age of movie studios. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

He said he had a casting couch encounter at 19 yo on one of his first interviews. He was young and confused and then when it dawned on him, he got out of there. He said it took him years to get over. The same things the women feel...guilt, shame, self-doubt (did I do something?) Just the "almost" took that big a toll.

Clooney, Damon & Affleck are thick as thieves. Then there are the movies they did with Pitt. To ask me to believe they were that much in the dark about a 25 yo open secret is insulting. What crap weasels. And Clooney, Mr. Sanctimonious, is a special kind of jackwagon to be lecturing the country on values. What a slimebucket.

There are heros in this sordid story. But the 3 asses of the Apocalypse are not them.

403 @399 It's not as if anyone after/i] WWII went to a HoJo's on purpose, but I'm a little tetchy about my local one right now -- after it was "that place" that people went for dinner After Church twice a year, it had a full long life as a pancake house, first as the Original franchise, then the owner bought it out, and "stayed well" right to retirement.

Unfortunately, so many other regional-chain breakfast places had come along, nobody would make the investment to turn-key the place, so it got vacated, and a jerk thought what the hell there's nothing to it, running it right into the ground as a neighborhood bar with dinner, even though everything was in his favor.

So it's about to come down, with its terrazzo "Simple Simon and The Pieman" logo in the front lobby not worn one whit after, I reckon, 63 years. And the lot will go to a Dollar General even though it is about half a mile from the next Dollar General. This is how we live now.
