I'd been put on quite a few projects which management then didn't find a use for, especially lately, so about a 5.5 on the Richter Scale of being shocked.
The worst part was coming into work this morning with a "quick meeting" on my calendar, with my boss and what I call the para-boss. (Para-boss is sort-of in charge of QA and does administrative stuff.)
Anyway that was four hours of fretting about what the "quick meeting" would be about, but deep down knowing what it was going to be about. Could have done without that.

Wonderful! That's great. I had a good experience with it after my T. died. I learned something positive from every woman I went out with even though most were not matches for me.
Yeah, be careful. I think us guys are much more casual about safety than that of the ladies so we don't consider those factors very much.

Reminds me of a case I read about years ago. The guy was getting out on parole. He had murdered his wife. It was the way that he did it that was especially horrific. He believed she was cheating on him. So, he took her captive, restrained her, and painted some chemical on her skin. He repeated the "treatment" over a number of days. It had the effect of turning her skin into leather. Somehow, the authorities discovered what was happening. The woman, in excruciating pain, was hospitalized. They didn't know what the substance was he put on her and she died after a week or so.
The guy was some kind of professional, perhaps a doctor or chemist. He was also an immigrant. The crime was many years ago, like the '60s or earlier. My Google-fu is failing me, so I can't find the specifics, but I recall how outrageous it was that such a monster would ever get out.
Anyway, there are worse things than what a sicko does after his victim is dead.

The majority of people don't even get large monuments any more. Some cemeteries, like my parents', only allow flat to the ground slabs.
A GOOD funeral director helps you through this, and doesn't push you to go overboard. The funeral director for my mom and dad made sure we knew about the free grave marker for veterans.

Yes. There are quite a few of those -- some dubbed "suicide rims". You can search and find illustrations of the different types, and which are the most dangerous.
We had an old truck with those really bad suicide rims. To show you what can happen, one actually blew one time. ON the truck, driving. It was on the inside right rear. It was rust and corrosion.

For example, when depressed, getting out of bed is a major achievement. Staying out of bed is the next step. Finding your pants, then getting the lawn mower started. Mowing the lawn comes later.

It doesn't produce CO2! At the "tailpipe", sure. But the electricity comes from somewhere, and that somewhere is usually fossil fuels. Even if you argue a decrease in CO2 because of higher efficiency of power plants and "renewables" in the grid, you still have the massive CO2 footprint from mining and refining the lithium and manufacture of the battery packs.
I guess it is a nice car, and if you drive one because of that reason and the fact that you don't have to go to a gas station, that is a fine reason. But buying for the first two reasons makes you a sanctimonious prick.

I looked back in my past and realized all the women I met and became lovers with I met through friends.
Every. One.
Now with my friends scattered and not living around here, family gone. I'm at an impasse as to meeting eligible women in a non threatening environment. Thus the online dating.
Haven't been at it long so don't have much to report. Plus the cohort of women my age are looking for those way younger. As much as 20 years younger so they don't have any reason to approach me.
So I've gone the other way and am looking at women 10 years older than me. (there's still a bunch that won't take messages from those their own age.)
There's some very well preserved older ladies but alas. They're really hoping for someone a tad younger.
I don't hold out much hope honestly. But I feel I should give it the old college try so as to be sure I've done all I can and relax into geezerhood knowing that the women of this area have made a big mistake.
They always SAY they like nice guys. But we know who they really go for.

There is another aspect. Those who afford to spend that much money on a car of such marginal utility are obviously affluent. They are being subsidized by ordinary taxpayers who make very real sacrifices to pay those taxes, and who can not afford such a car.
It is a blatant transfer of wealth from the 'have-nots' to the 'haves'. Anyone with a shred of intellectual honesty has to concede that it is morally obscene. I feel that way about all of the subsidized vehicles.

The question is who "they" is. There are lots of women - I'd guess a majority of women - who want a nice, stable, loyal man as a husband and father of their children. There's a small minority - I'd guess - who haven't outgrown teenaged values and want bikers, etc., and who, if they're extremely unlucky, get what they think they want.

After talking about his realization of what the brain scan meant, the guy who wrote the article then discussed talking with family, friends, and co-workers, who all confirmed that yes, he was probably a psychopath. But he'd managed to learn well enough to mimic normal behavior that he was able to live a more or less normal life, and even had a successful marriage.

I remember that article well, and it went on to some very interesting conclusions from this researcher. Because he noted that while he indeed tested for psychopathic tendencies, he also had a very successful life, has a prestigious job, and was held to be near the top of his professional field. Now this revelation did give him insight into problems in his personal life, but even there he didn't have more than most people have at some point.
His conclusion that the reason psychopathic tendencies are much more widespread than you may think is that, when they are kept under control, or only appear in what one may call a "weak" configuration, then they are actually a great competitive advantage, especially for men. (and they show up much more in men) To succeed, they just need to be intelligent and driven enough to make sure that they never cross the legal lines that would ruin them. (Although Harvey Weinstein sure did, and got away with it for a long, long time)
His ultimate conclusion was that most men who rise to the top of their fields, most heads of corporations, and the vast majority of Political leaders are all men who show significant psychopathic tendencies. That's why they rise to the top.

I used to feel the same way and I was happy with myself. So happy that I never attracted any women as I was off by myself with no interest in adapting to anyone.
So it was working out well until this last year when I start feeling very uncomfortable about being alone and the desire to have some contact was so great that I tried to connect with those long gone.
Did find one, she's married though so no help there. I don't know what happened to my ability to shrug off being alone.

Out of high school, enlist in the military, then go to college. You will learn more stuff, more useful stuff in the military than you will in college, excepting a science or technical degree.
Getting a military occupational specialty that also includes the basic science or technology that you might then want to pursue a college degree is also a big winner.

Me, I am actually high-empathy. Crazy high empathy. I found that out back in college, talking some psychological tests and part of a class.
I pegged the meter on empathy. You may have seen a component of those tests: correctly identifying the emotion from facial expressions. Well, I'm damn good at that.
At the time, I wanted to be Mr. Spock, and couldn't believe this. I refused to believe it. But one of the professors of psychology looked at the results and then explained me to me. Blew my mind.
I'm so high empathy that being around a lot of people is exhausting, because my brains overloads trying to process all the emotions being displayed and stuff like that.

But I would not describe myself as such.
I think the tests are kind of bullshitty. I may sort of care about other people, but at the end of the day -- not really. I don't lose sleep over other people's bullshit.

It's used for close work, dry flies on smaller streams, so the 5 is better. It's an interesting little rod, not clumsy with a 4, and can handle the 5 until you get silly with distance.

I don't think I'm a loser, but I do know my limitations. As far as looks, I'm average. I really need to lose weight. I'm not rich, and probably never will be, at this point.
I have a lot of female friends, who think I'm "nice". We all know how that works out.
So...I'm going to focus on things that I enjoy...singing, art, the occasional acting gig. I'll spend time with friends and family, especially my lovable grandkids.
If someone comes along who decides they want me to be a part of their lives, that'll be great. If they don't, that's just fine too.

Second stop - the National Gallery of Art to see a new exhibit on Vermeer and other Dutch masters and a second exhibit of Fragonard fantasy paintings. The Vermeers were fantastic, and I love Fragonard. These paintings had a loose brushwork, almost Impressionistic, although they were painted more than 100 years before the Impressionists. So awe-inspiring to see such masterworks. So often we think we know a painting because we've seen it reproduced a thousand times, but you can't appreciate the brushwork unless you view a painting in person.

I say that because...I have dated really successful guys who I have had pretty much no interest in, and I have dated less successful guys who I would move mountains for.
Similarly on looks....there are some really good looking guys who I just haven't been interested in, whereas there might be a guy who is shorter or not my type or whatever, that I might find endearing as all get out.
My point is....there is no rhyme or reason- looks, money, personality. You like what you like. And, a lot of the time it just comes down to feeling that inner something with a guy/girl.

Somehow going after a man because he's successful seems a negative to women. Maybe they think that others think they're being bought. But that's not what it means. It means that women like and seek out successful men and those who can provide for a family. That's all. Nothing wrong with that.
It's instinctive on both men and women's part the traits they find attractive. Biology and the survival of the fittest (otherwise known as who passes their genes down to the next generation.)

I think it was my drinking and partying habits that ended up ending some earlier relationships. I kind of calmed down in my mid-20s, and this current relationship has gone stellar (7+ years).

It's funny, I will choose to either watch a movie many times, or listen to the soundtrack many times, but not both. My most replayed soundtracks is the original Blade Runner by Vangelis. For a long time I never felt lonely even though I was alone and with no SO for a long time.
This went away just recently. Don't know why.
It was just an ease with being alone and not having someone to spend time with. If I even thought about it. (which I did occasionally)
I'd had a couple of long term relationships but none stuck and neither did I. Mutual usually. Went my merry way with hardly a look back.
Now. Boom. I feel unfulfilled is the best I can express. Like I'm missing something. And it's kind of late to feel this way. Maybe it is because of my age. Dunno.

Oh my gosh, you have no clue how much that sounds like me.
I went through a really terrible break-up deal, and I decided that...the whole marriage thing just probably wasn't for me. And, I decided to stop looking.
Did that for 4 or 5 years...just didn't actively try. Then, all of the sudden, out of the blue one day, I realized how lonely I was, and how much I wanted...companionship more than anything. Love yes. The physical stuff, sure. But, it was the companionship I wanted. Unfulfilled is an excellent word to describe it.

I usually use default, or G1. If you are not a precision LR shooter (if you were, you wouldn't be asking, likely), then that'll get you close enough to wrk up your own drop table.

G1 is basically first gen calcs, very old school back to at least WW1
the newer generations are better, but not by very much
the big thing is to enter G1 for a G1 calc
you enter a g2 valu into a program running G1 calcs and your results are way fucked up

I kind of dig it. I have a light hair and beard color, so it's not totally noticeable, but I have some grey beard hairs coming through and I kind of like it. Thicker, manlier hair.

no good deed, not a JAG here (paging ThunderB), but my understanding is that the Bergdahl defense, as could be expected, threw an "undue command influence" argument against the wall, hoping that would argue for leniency in sentencing. In other words, their job.
Kind of a weird situation, though. The prosecution argued the remarks (which *were*stupid to make - not importantly stupid, but stupid) occurred before the Golden Scalpweasel was CiC, therefore irrelevant. The judge observed that the prez made a recent comment, in response to a question, referring the questioner back to his campaign-period statement.
The judge then said he had to consider public perceptions of fairness in the military justice system, in weighing whether the presidential candidate/incumbent remarks would matter.
With all respect to the judge, FFS! An open/shut, and particularly heinous, case ofdesertion that led directly to many deaths and serious injuries to our own troops, in war-time, with a vile and literally criminal enemy? That was so bad and well documented that it was plead out, guilty? In the context of the most well known military justice cases in recent years being 1) Marines who were slandered by senior members of Congress, and yet acquitted, and 2) a mass-murdering jihadi traitor who STILL hasn't been tried and will probably not (incredibly) face the death penalty?
Col. Nance's sincere concern for the prestige and reputation of military justice is admirable, but there needs to be a check as to which planet he has been on since 9/11 ......

Walking from the Renwick to the NGA we passed a 'protest' called Injun Nation. The 'protest' consists of two tent-sized teepees made of old trashy plastic and other garbage. There were two 'protesters' at the 'protest' with a sign that read "Kill Whitey." The 'protesters' were both white, which doesn't make sense. The whole thing looked like a homeless encampment, which in fact it is. Seems these two guys figured out if they filed a 1st amendment permit for a protest event with NPS they could then camp out on the square for the duration of the permit. Their permit expires next week. Good riddance.

Ballistics tables will not help in my attempts to become decent at hitting a 5" steel plate while moving, with a 1911.It is remarkably difficult. My instructor is a retired SEAL (US, not Soviet) - and of course it's all just for fun. But damn. Lateral movement much easier than shooting while advancing toward the target. But both still difficult. No real solution for the "sight bounce" up/down as you move, but it's minimal when you've got both feet on the ground.
Best part is all these shooting problems require LOTS of shooting to fix. Reloading is key ($$$$$).

Oh, and on guns. Stick with the G-1 calc., as has already been well stated here.
Don't bother with the others, unless your shooter's notebook is replete with loads, velocities, drop info logged into tables, and many, many "etc."s yet unnamed.
I once saw a "sled" class benchrest shooter, with fat three ring binders for each of his rifles, each binder cross indexed with load info for each caliber in a separate binder.
So detailed the data, it included full meteorology notes as to temp, humidity, barometric pressure and wind speed.
Folks, when it gets that complex, it's just not gonna be a fun day for me.
I'm happy to work up a 3,000 fps load for the Swedish Mauser, that'll hold Sub MOA till it's boring to keep shooting.
One hole groups are nice, and I've shot 'em.
But I'd rather get to load up 100 rds. of that Sub MOA ammo in an afternoon, then spend a whole day producing only ten rounds of "PERFECT" ammo, in the quest for nothing but "bullet diameter", one-hole groups.
Mr. Deer won't care if I hit the ventricle or aorta. I can work with that CEP at three hundred yards, and still have fun at the practice range, and hunt well enough for venison in the freezer.
Yeah, I know guys who lathe turn individual bullets for .338 Lapua loads, and let's not even discuss the absolute obsession with total uniformity in every aspect of the brass, it's preparation, measurements and assembly.
I just wanna shoot and have fun. Cheaply, and accurately, within (for me), reason.
BTW. Same outlook for wimminz. The perfect is the enemy of the good.

Paintball guns work well on chipmunks for me. Squirrels typically are pellet gun territory, but I don't take out the shotgun for anything smaller than a raccoon.

If the bullet maker does not specify which ballistic model (the G number) is used, it is G1.
Look at rifle bullets on Hornady's site. Some list both G1 and G7 BCs.
G1 is used for stouter, blunter, flat based bullets. G7 is for sleeker (long pointy nosed) and boat tailed bullets.

I feel you. My problem is not so much the squirrels (who like to throw acorns at my car and ding it up), but the chipmunks, who have a "great escape" network of tunnels around my property and seem to enjoy fucking with my chickens more than anything.
You gotta do what you gotta do though. Luckily, my predator problem is fairly limited. The bears scare the skunks and raccoons away mostly, and they seem to leave the chickens alone.
Squirrels and chipmunks are more of a nuisance for me than a real problem.

I used them for 4-5 years and then I couldn't find the bullets locally for a few years. Bought a few boxes of something a little different and worked up new loads.
When I built the new re-loading bench, I found 200 more of the original bullets and decided to load those up, again.

I've been growing a beard for a few months now -- actually keeping up with grooming it and waxing it and whatnot.
OK, let's talk beards. It's getting to be beard season for me, I usually grow one in the fall/winter. It took me years to figure out trimming. I used to just let it grow until it was unruly and then hack it all off.
So now I can maintain a trimmed beard. And I shave my neck because it looks better and neck beard is just itchy and also makes me look like a hobo.
Waxing? Please expound. Or expand. What is waxing, is this a thing for long beards or regular beards?

Get some sub-sonic loads for a .22 LR bolt-action, scoped rifle.
Pretty much about the same power as a .22 pump-up pellet rifle, and no louder, withal.
What it does offer, is superb accuracy, and with a bullet 'bout twice the weight of the pellet gun, an absolutely lethal impact to Mr. Squirrel.
It'll be safe downrange, just like your pellet rifle. But, with no worries about wearing out springs, seals, O rings or the unique damage that air-rifles do to scopes and their internal mechanisms.
Remington and Aguila both make make quality, sub-sonic .22 LR ammo.
Get a GREAT .22 boltie. CZ-527, or Ruger 77/22, or any Anshutz ($$$), or a Marlin or Savage.
Don't buy a "22" scope for it though. Buy at least a good $200 Nikon or Leupold centerfire rifle scope. Don't by the blister-pack $39 scope at the sporting good store.
Get the thing properly zeroed at 25 yards, to the degree where you KNOW where the shot will hit within 1/10th inch at that distance.
Then learn how to adapt for the 15 yard shot, or the 30 yard or 40 yard shot.
My CZ 527 Lux, with 24" barrel. With subsonic loads, all the powder is burned in the barrel, before the bullet exits the muzzle.
It's not "silencer" quiet. But it is close. VERY close.
And, it's always ready to go at an instant. You can't keep an airgun pumped and loaded, with degrading the O rings and other seals.
Upgrade, ma'am. You'll get'cher squirllz.

Very well done museum. If anything, it doesn't blow the horn loud enough on the amazing and decisive role played by the SeaBees in the South Pacific/WWII, one of the most amazing examples of American ingenuity in that war that was stuffed full of incredible American accomplishments.
Well worth a visit. Also got up to Ojai for the first time in centuries. A billion degrees (yesterday), but still nice. We took the 150 down thru Santa Paula to return to the coast, loved the oil seeping out of the hill.

I feel sorry for you. You clearly don't understand the principles of OPERATING a motor vehicle, INCLUDING the occasional "difficulty" that is part of that Operational Universe.
Which, on occasion, requires one to perform necessary non-DRIVING evolutions, so as to SAFELY REMOVE one's vehicle from various roads, highways, streets and yes, even parking lots.
One ought not spend one's life utterly dependent on the response of AAA or some nefarious tow truck driver to ensure a completed drive home, after work, etc.
Though you acknowledge (as your query posits), that there is more to "driving" a car than the twist of a steering wheel or the stomp of a brake pedal, you then quickly hide behind the straw man argument of wiring and splicing and trannies and all manner of other rhetorical bullshit.
Either way, there is a Fundamental Concept as to Vehicular Responsibility which is missing from your personal lexicon.
Here's another, simpler example of required maintenance that ought to be a "check" on a DMV test. Clean yer damn glass, inside and out! Countless nighttime road accidents are caused due to "flare" of lights on filthy glass and fingerprinted mirrors, from every angle.
You want some real driving license tests? Let's soap down a 500' skidpad, and see who can steer out of a skid. No maintenance issues there for you to quibble about, right?

And I personally have been the recipient of damage twice due to the inability of the drivers to maintain directional control in the snow and ice.
None of which was my fault yet the damage inflicted in one case was permanently disfiguring. Due to financial loss, relocation and such, I was unable to pursue a liability claim.
So I truly can understand and echo the anger and frustration with the thoughtless and misguided.

That happened to one of my aunts, my mother's oldest sister. She married him, and ran off to CA with him, and put him through college. Once he got out and got a job, he dumped her.

I've lived in snow areas all my life--currently the Adirondacks where you get serious snow normally.

I was out fishing at a beach and went back to my truck for a jacket when an older lady came up to me with a problem. She'd got her truck in the sand and while it wasn't quite stuck she thought it was about to be and what should she do?
(For some reason, her uncle from whom she got the truck had an Explorer with 2WD. Who gets an SUV in 2WD?).
Now, I love being a boy scout in situations like this and I assured her we could get it taken care of because I have 4WD and a tow rope, and also an entrenching tool and a jack support for jacking on sand. (Shut up, I heard you think of that Weinstein joke).
So I told her that and said I'd get her sorted out. Suddenly another guy pops up wanting to be the big man. He says "just lower the tire pressure to 18 psi and you'll drive right off, I have a tire gauge". She asks me if that will work, I don't think so with the 2WD and the soft sand, but give the schmuck his shot while I get my gear sorted.
(I have to put down the back seats and move all the fishing stuff away from the hatch where the tow rope lives. Also the come-along. I didn't even brag about the come-along).
So the guy lets air out of her tires. She can't move. I pull up and hook up the tow rope. We rehearse who will do what and I pull her smoothly off the sand and onto hardtop.
The point of this story is I got to feel smug and it was better because I was able to shame that useless interloper.
I mean, the point of this story is that I like helping a damsel in distress.

Let me regale you with an abbreviated tale, of me arriving to a major shooting event immediately after heavy rains. Appx., 2006.
I and my (then) Crown Vic were the first across a soaked pasture. Carrying two dozen long arms and more pistols, plus +7,000 rounds of ammo, across said field.
Got up to the firing line in fine order. Later 4x4s were pushed by tractor, etc.
Days end? MORE torrential thunderstorms, including Central Texas Tornadoes.
My car lighter, and I watched many trucks become mired, and stuck.
But I observed their paths, and chose...differently.
That Crown Vic surfed the mud, and emerged, unscathed.
I was actually and really and truly CUSSED OUT by one VERY pissed off Chevy Monster Truck owner, who had to get extracted via John Deere.
Think that made my day? That made my day!

Perhaps a video game to train would-be drivers on the noises certain car problems can cause, and how to deal with them. Say, bearing knock in the engine, busted muffler/exhaust pipe, brakes down to metal, CV joint failed.
And maybe a little primer on the economics of car ownership: new vs. used, buy vs. lease, cost of credit, cost of insurance.

The 20 minute trek on curvy, hilly 55 mph roads can be quite harrowing, with speedy commuters in the afternoon, and pitch dark skies with critters and drunks at night. We do car maintenance with her at home, so that's not our biggest concern.

Heh. Last week, I made two gaskets for a Stromberg WW carburetor out of cardboard from a beer carton. Engine didn't run, but not because of the carb. Found the head of a valve wedged in the top of a piston.

About three years ago I'd had a bad breakup and decided to go on match.com to try to sex it out of my system. I had a pretty good batting average. One month of membership, six or seven first dates, banged three of them by the second or third date.

The family in which the gravestone marker was removed is a sad story. But there is much we do not know. Were they pressured to get a more expensive stone? What decisions were made to finance it? Were there sound money allocation decisions after all that?
My personal choice is to be more cautious with my decreasing amount of discretionary spending.

The guy was some kind of professional, perhaps a doctor or chemist. He was also an immigrant. The crime was many years ago, like the '60s or earlier. My Google-fu is failing me, so I can't find the specifics, but I recall how outrageous it was that such a monster would ever get out.

And advice: don't worry about regular college. You probably won't like it. The people are nice individually but they all think alike and you might not like what they think.
Find something you like to do and then work hard at learning everything about it.
A degree can be useful but always have a backup in every step you take. Cause sometimes it comes in real handy.

Math is easy for some types of people. As English is easier for others. And although English seems simple, it's one of the more complicated languages to learn. Just ask a foreigner who has had to do so.
I took 4 years English courses in high school and am still learning.
Math too. but through disuse have lost most of it. What you don't use, you will lose.
Relax and enjoy life living and knowing you have a mother who loves you and cares for you. That's a plus in this world.

I have seen recipes for crabapple pickles, but never tried to make them. My tree had the fungus and apple maggots. Being crabapples, I couldn't see spending money and time to spray. It did look pretty in the spring when it was in blossom. When it started growing into the powerline I cut it down.
Every tree disease known to humanity is in this neighborhood.

My former lemon tree had some badass thorns on it. Alas, the cold weather finally did it in. I was getting 600+ lemons, huge ones, off of it per year. And I bled for them.

One damn thing after another, Cattle futures, land deals, travel agents, stealing the WH furniture and crockery, creating a phony charity and then charging thousands for "speaking" fees (which we KNOW are for influence) "donations" from foreign countries and even outright sale of their office.
And they're still getting away with it. Right out where everyone can SEE!!!!!
They are poisonous to the country's weal as they show the lil folks that the law is not the same for everyone.
That nurtures contempt for the law in general. It's why so many from the southern countries are quite easy in their law breaking. Because where they come from the law is what you can get away with. There isn't even an attempt to be fair.
It's no spread to the US and I fear we will decline soon because of this tear in our moral fiber.
