Thread before the Gardening Thread: Thought Crimes Today [KT]

Serving your mid-day open thread needs

Hello, Horde. Hope your Saturday is going well. What with the "Practice Halloweens" on campus to help students pick inoffensive costumes and all, I have been thinking about how easy it is to commit a thought crime in America today.

I remember being horrified at the show trials in Life and Death in Shanghai, where proving your loyalty to communist thought could be a matter of life or death. What is happening in the USA today mostly seems stupider than those show trials. At least people sometimes had a chance to respond then.

In the case of the Boise State professor compared to a Nazi for saying that young children should not be empowered to choose their own gender, this is the part that bothers me the most:

While he has received withering personal attacks over his research, Yenor said that few have engaged with the ideas or have seriously attempted to refute his arguments.

Yenor said the personal attacks don't bother him, but he worries about the long-term impact on people worried that their views will not be argued with, but simply attacked on campus.

"That's been one of the most disappointing things," Yenor said. "Everyone in academia could live with having a debate about ideas, but a debate has to start with an understanding what the other person is arguing."

"It strikes me that there has really been, first of all, no effort to first understand what I'm arguing, and second of all, to get anywhere beyond name-calling and labeling," Yenor said.

Meanwhile, Peter Woods does a retrospective review of the essays of David Horowitz through about 2010: Battlefield Notes from a War Gone Unnoticed. Worth reading and thinking about. He had the right ideas. Why wasn't Horowitz more successful at stopping the advance of the Left on campus?

Below the fold, a video featuring Jordan Peterson on the dangers of unconscious bias testing by HR departments and governments: "You'd think we would learn from the 20th Century.

If you are doing something interesting today, why not let us know about it? Don't let anybody try to reprogram you. Not even Facebook.

4 Trump will allow release of JFK assassination files next week.

"JFK scholars believe the trove of files may provide insight into assassin Lee Harvey Oswald's trip to Mexico City weeks before the killing, during which he visited the Soviet and Cuban embassies. Oswald's stated reason for going was to get visas that would allow him to enter Cuba and the Soviet Union, according to the Warren Commission, the investigative body established by President Lyndon B. Johnson, but much about the trip remains unknown."

My pet theory is that Oswald was a lone gunman, but acted at the behest of Krushchev and Castro who both had motive.

27 Good morning. It is that time of year - my lovely wife made her specialty, an eggnog cheesecake which is, and I am not exagerating, the BEST CHEESECAKE IN THE WORLD. Man this is good.

Enjoying with one of my faves, Bruce Cost Ginger Ale with a cheap bourbon (Evan Williams this time).

We took the dogs out for a walk and they loved it this crisp fall morning.

Warden's post yesterday, I said it made me want to reach out to my father who I had not heard from in at least 7 years, and I wasn't even 100% sure he was alive. I found him on Facebook and sent him a note. It took me a couple of tries, because I kept typing and deleting, but I finally sent it.

He responded (edited for identifying info)

Long story.

I am so glad you reached out. I have wondered about you and your family. I have hoped you were doing well and being successful in whatever ways you want to be. I will be more than glad to catch up and let you know about me but more importantly I want to know about you and children.

I was living in Tx until Harvey came by. I am now living in XXX. I am using XXX's pool house as a cottage. I am well taken care of and have recently discovered that instead of life fading from me I now have new life ahead and great expectancies. I love you and yours whether you understand that or not. Love, XXX

At the behest of? I have my doubts. But I have no problem believing that the Castro and the Cubans might have had knowledge but didn't think Oswald was competent enough to do the job, and were willing to look the other way, just in case he succeeded.

On the other hand, the KGB was smart and savvy enough that they'd understand that letting an Oswald go through with it after those contacts in Mexico would be dangerous for the Soviets. So I'm really thinking that they DIDN'T know.

Of course, no one knows for sure anymore. It's at the point where one could posit that Kentucky Fried Chicken hired the grassy knoll gunman because JFK had threatened to have the CIA release the 11 Herbs and Spices recipe to the public.

42 What We Found

The total amounts of errors corrected in HUD's notes and consolidated financial statements were $516.4 billion and $3.4 billion, respectively.
There were several other unresolved audit matters, which restricted our ability to obtain sufficient, appropriate evidence to express an opinion. These unresolved audit matters relate to
(1) the Office of General Counsel's refusal to sign the management representation letter,
(2) HUD's improper use of cumulative and first-in, first-out budgetary accounting methods of disbursing community planning and development program funds,
(3) the $4.2 billion in nonpooled loan assets from Ginnie Mae's stand-alone financial statements that we could not audit due to inadequate support,
(4) the improper accounting for certain HUD assets and liabilities, and
(5) material differences between HUD's subledger and general ledger accounts. This audit report contains 11 material weaknesses, 7 significant deficiencies, and 5 instances of noncompliance with applicable laws and regulations.

First your children still need food electricity and a roof. so child support while it hurts is a duty not to the bitch spouse, but to your kids.
I will add I received exactly One support payment with 3 children from that marriage, But fortunately I could earn a decent living after suffering in a22 ft . travel trailer with the kids
I understand you anger at the wife/husband , because hey divorce brings out the worst in everyone.

But I would say the children shouldn't pay the price for our own stupidities.

so
addendum; I realize the child supporter whether male or female also go through flux of income and judges should have mercy .

anyway not all women were like me and could pick up the load and carry it.

as some men are in the same spot.

so even ,, children have to be supported and regarded as the Top priority no matter how hurt you are.

I got to see one of those up close a personal on a trip to Guangzhou, when I was teaching at a university in Hong Kong. We were on a research trip to the Special Economic Zone, which was an industrial area to help prepare PRC for the turnover of Hong Kong-they were experimenting with quasi capitalist businesses. As soon as our group got off the train, we were whisked through customs and taken to a holding area, where there was a trial going on. As the only blond gwailo, I was pushed to the front. Then they shot a number of men in front of me. Shot them in the stomach.

85 When the hell did Halloween become an event for people over the 6th grade? We had a few parents in the neighborhood who dressed up to answer the door but it wasn't a social thing for them. This perpetual childhood meme is tiresome.

BUT, if I were inclined to put on a costume now it would be as politically incorrect as possible. I am older, meaner, bigger, and better armed than any of these SJW wankers. It would be amusing to see them splutter in indignation or bite their tongues to keep from pissing me off.

88 This topic reminds me of the Sargon/Thomas Smith "interview" from last week's Mythcon/Mythicist convention. Sargon brought up the charge of "thought crimes" and "thought police" several times against his SJW . The whole thing's on YouTube, and if you haven't seen it, it's pretty amazing. Great to see someone thrash a SJW in a public forum, but even better to hear an audience cheer the thrashing on, and see the SJW completely flustered that he's not supported.

109 Here is a story about my Dad. I first heard it from my mother, how he had been RIFfed from the Army after Vietnam with 19 years of service because he was hard-headed and wouldn't take the classes he needed to finish his associate's degree. Then later, I heard his side of the story.

He served 3 tours in Vietnam, first as an enlisted artilleryman in the early 60s, teaching the Hmong how to shoot at the Viet Cong. His 3d tour he was near the end, 72 or so, and was a pilot and a Major. By this time, we had "Vietnamized" the war and were mostly doing air and artillery support for the SVN Army and often they were using the US Army to settle old tribal scores. If SVN called for fire on a location, we fired on the location. Those were the rules. So, if some SVN COL wanted an area cleaned out for his people....

So, anyway, he had gone to VN to help the Hmong shoot artillery, 10 years later, we were shooting artillery at them.

He went on R and R in Thailand, and, perhaps a bit in his cups, decided that he wanted to let the President know what he thought about this. So he wrote a letter:

Dear President Nixon,

You sorry son of a bitch....

Pro-tip: As a field grade officer in the Army, do not write a letter to the Commander in Chief addressing him as a "sorry son of a bitch."

Ralph Raico, a political historian, liked to quip that it was refreshing to go to large libertarian conventions because when he was an undergrad, the entire US Libertarian movement could fit into Murray Rothbard's living room, and often did.

I would have loved to see Raico debate Gary Johnson, mostly to see that idiot taken apart logically by a towering intellect, followed by that 90 year old towering intellect shuffling across the stage to the opposing podium and beating Johnson with his cane.

...Oswald's trip to Mexico City weeks before the killing, during which he visited the Soviet and Cuban embassies... to get visas that would allow him to enter Cuba and the Soviet Union...

A theory -- I may not be recalling exactly (I've read so many!!):

Oswald was single shooter, but not such a great marksman.

Oswald went to Mex City after failing to get visas in Texas.

When he couldn't get them, Oswald blamed the Texas governor.

So, Connelly was the target.

JFK was collateral.

As soon as our group got off the train, we were whisked through customs and taken to a holding area, where there was a trial going on. As the only blond gwailo, I was pushed to the front. Then they shot a number of men in front of me. Shot them in the stomach.

118 The professor at Boise State does not understand that dialectic discourse does not work with those that think in rhetoric.

Those of you that think explaining how things really work will change these individuals are badly mistaken. For them, the reality is their rhetoric and if the facts do not match then they are either ignored or distorted so that the rhetorical point remains intact. Rhetoric must be combated with rhetoric, not dialectic.

Unfortunately, maybe 10 percent of the population deals primarily in dialectic.

i always thought zap ruder was a bit too convenient. what was the odds that a guy with a high tech camera would just happen to be at that spot when jfk was going by? astronomical! and after the film came up he sort of disappeared; never heard of him again. and his name, very weird.

well, everyone knows the cia likes to use anagrams for their ops. so i parsed "zapruder" and the only anagram was "druz pear"; the druz are arabs and pear is a fruit - what is an arab fruit? - the date palm! lamp is an anagram of palm... but there is no anagram for "date". so date must be a day on the calendar, like a day of infamy!

but date could also mean an encounter. so what is the anagram for romantic meeting? "rmn to cia get me in"!

- New fuel line on the genset
- All tested and ready to go!

I'm pretty close to the Pulse massacre and have several friends who knew victims.

That was a muslim terrorist operation carried out by a known, radicalized muslim zealot. The official line was that there was "no direct connection with ISIS" because they couldn't find any emails or correspondence with an ISIS member.

The shooter called 911 and explained to them why he was doing what he was doing while he was doing it. There's no mystery to it at all.

Watching the news coverage in real time of a terrorist massacre that happened right across town was a surreal experience. This city is still reeling from it.

178 Middlebury is back in the news over at Powerline. Some vandal spraypainted SJW slogans on entrance pillars to several of the beautiful old buildings, and the school responded by calling for introspection and self-examination on the topics of racism, white advantage and bias.

It seems it still hasn't occurred to the school how endless this rabbit hole is, and until they start summarily kicking out the malefactors there will be no end.

This isn't a wave that will eventually recede, it's Maoist and will end in violence against those faculty or students considered less woke than necessary.

180 I've always believed Oswald acted alone and if the Cubans or Soviets had knowledge of it beforehand , they dismissed him as an incompetent crackpot who would either fail to kill the president or die trying.
The only thing that might be interesting is that IF the Cubans or Soviets had knowledge beforehand, and out of "courtesy"--or to cover their asses--let the CIA know and the CIA failed to take the threat seriously.

Other than that, some don't want these documents released because they might reveal some of the stunts the CIA was pulling around that time, or some other embarrassing info that the deep state or certain individuals would rather keep private.

195 I got back yesterday from the Bogleheads conference near Philadelphia. This is the fan club for Jack Bogle, who founded the Vanguard mutual fund group and introduced the first low-cost stock index fund. Mr. Bogle gave a talk and had a fireside chat with Dr. Bill Bernstein, author of "If You Can", a 15-page guide for millenials on how to get rich slowly. I met a lot of nice folks in the 2-comma club ( > $1M net worth).

(Mr. Bogle had a heart transplant 20 years ago. He's the only fund manager known to have a heart, because they saw it being installed.)

Jonathan Clements, ex-WSJ columnist, ate at our table, then sat on the Panel of Experts QA. Other experts were Dr. Bernstein, Christine Benz (Morningstar), Dr. Wade Pfau, Allan Roth (who once got his dog a "Top Financial Planner" award), and Mike Piper. We got on busses to Vanguard HQ in Valley Forge, heard Vanguard execs answer questions, and visited our money. Gus Sauter, once Vanguard's Chief Investment Officer, closed the show with a talk about active vs. passive investing.

Can't say I learned much I didn't know already:

Diversify and keep costs low. Simpicity is possible, and a lot of investment advisors are in business to make it look too hard for you to do yourself.

The three-fund protfolio works fine (US total stock market index, foreign total stock market index, total bond index). Take your age, put that percent of nest egg in bonds, Put the rest in stock, split about 2/3 US stock, 1/3 foreign stock. Sock away 15% of your income into that, from your first paycheck. (Bogle says: Don't peek at your statements until you retire. You'll be so rich when you retire, you should be at your cardiologist when you open the statement.)

For annuities, most kinds suck and are designed to enrich salesmen and confuse customers. SPIAs and QLACs don't suck, and can be the right tool to assure that you won't run out of money before you run out of life.

It's remarkable how many investment strategies follow Rekenthaler's Rule: "If the bozos know about it, it doesn't work any more." Gene Fama and Ken French got a Nobel for discovering the "value premium" -- value stocks outperform growth stocks in the long run. But since they published their findings, the value premium disappeared.

(You think you're not a bozo? Got a Bloomberg terminal? Did you take graduate courses in linear algebra and random processes? Can you explain the difference between buying a covered call and selling a naked put? Because that's who you're trading against.)

The only bad part was the trip up. I was in the middle of a 3-way accident on I-295 near Baltimore-Washington airport. A big van rear-ended my li'l Miata and bounced it into the car ahead. Nobody hurt, everybody insured, all three drove away, but oh my pretty little car! (Busted headlight taillight, smushed trunk lid, front wheel well scrapes on tire).

224 I suspect it's related to the sun roof drains

A little chlorine bleach should take care of it. Burn out the organics that are blocking the end of the drain line.

227 Speaking of thought crimes: recently TSA has taken to searching books at airports. On one such occasion on my travels they grabbed my backpack, and pulled out my book to flip through and, one supposes, to ascertain that it was in fact a book. It was Richard Pipes "Russian Revolution" which I find appropriate reading for this 100th anniversary year of the event.

I quipped to the TSA agent "I know, I know, that book violates the creed of the United States and will one day get me arrested."
