Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Saturday Evening Movie Thread [Hosted By The JamesMadison]Play Ball! So, we’re in the middle of the playoffs. We almost had a World Series rematch. What better time to talk about some baseball movies than now? Thanks to kallisto for the idea. America’s Pastime Being such a beloved sport for so long, baseball has also inspired more than its share of movies. From Pride of the Yankee to Damn Yankees to The Sandlot we’ve seen movies find the inherent drama of the game and capitalize on it to create some wonderful films. Two of those (lesser) movies that my dad always had a VHS of while I was growing up were Major League II and Rookie of the Year, but my favorite has grown to be Moneyball. Drama Sudden Turnarounds So, the history of the movie version of Moneyball isn’t 100% accurate, but it’s still a great piece of filmmaking. One thing that it does incredibly well, I think, is convey the true feeling of watching a baseball team through a year. This is highlighted in two sequences: The Streak, and the end of the season. The Streak (where the A’s won 20 games in a row, an AL record maintained until this year when the Indians won 22), is an absolutely fantastic sequence, and it caps with the real life walk off home run after a roller coaster 20th game. Everything felt like it was going to end until that one play, and then an eruption of emotion. It wasn’t as predictable as the one, two, three homerun (Hatteberg knocked out the very first pitch), but it represents the expectation of the high, the withdrawal away from that high, and then the sudden apex. The end of the yeah happens in game 5 of the ALDS. Oakland is riding high when, almost inexplicably, it all just comes to a sudden end. The soundtrack quiets, and all that’s left is the sound of a radio personality talking about how the A’s were good, but just not good enough. That particular level and delivery of disappointment is familiar to anyone who follows sports. "We’re almost there!" "We lost? How did we lose?" The Long Game I think that the drama of baseball, though, comes in the length of the season, not in individual games. The drama of a game mostly comes from the culmination of a season’s worth of work (are we that nervous at the end of game 3 of 162?). Baseball is a game of tension that builds over months and peaks in individual games while movies take place over 90-120 minutes. Condensing all of that into such a small frame is difficult, so the drama really changes. Still, baseball has inspired good films, and we should celebrate that. All I know is that I need a live rooster. The Elephant in the Room Weinstein. I don’t care about the personalities behind movies. Certain people I wish to keep making movies forever (Terrence Malick being a prime example), but mostly, they’re all disposable and easily replaceable. That gets doubled when it comes to the non-creative types, like most producers. Seeing him burn makes me smile more than anything else. But, movies are a medium, not an industry or Hollywood itself. People in Spain make movies who have never been to Hollywood. Francois Truffaut had only seen Hollywood movies when he made The 400 Blows. If I never saw a Hollywood film again (past, present, or future), I’d still never catch up with what’s been made much less what’s yet to come out. Let Hollywood burn. All it’s really doing is making superhero movies these days anyway. That's because Hollywood lives in a complete bubble. The bubble is full of perverted people with broken lives who never know or have forgotten real life. Any remake concentrates on things that messed up people concentrate on. You start to realize it when you hear some of these people. The people who made Galaxy Quest were talking about how it would have been even funnier with the foul language and the sexual escapades. It's like the new Star Trek having characters drop F-bombs. They are stuck with thinking the crass and crude are simply wonderful. Posted by: WOPR (Colonial Marines can't use harsh language) at October 21, 2017 08:14 PM (J70i0) 102

I haven't seen a lot of baseball movies but I liked "The Natural" from Bernard Malamud, who was a great writer even though I like some of his other novels better. Baseball seemed to be a sport that united Americans, in that I knew people who who born here in the 20's and both their parents and their own boys loved the sport whether they were Roman Catholic with family originally from Italy or Jewish sons of grandparents from Russia and Poland.

Annie's opening monologue in BullDurham -- about the "Church of Baseball", among other things -- is such a dead-center hit in the thematic heart of the film, I don't even care that I normally find voiceovers cheap shortcuts.
Besides being the greatest baseball movie ever, that's one awesome sex sequence. Couple of movies that I have seen over the past week, trying to find something decent in the streaming options I have.
Security. Antonio Banderas and Ben Kingsley. Lots of bad things about the movie. Like the fact that the backstory on Banderas' character is, well, not credible. He should have been the guy he played in The Expendables 3? That would have made more sense. And yet, for free, not awful. The Day. Cast you have never heard of. Post-apocalyptic. But the apocalypse is a total mystery - nothing about what happened. Just there are survivors, and bad guys. (I read that originally it was supposed to be a zombie movie - I think they decided that was overdone. Good choice.) Starts slow, then bam! Brutal, though. But pretty good film. loves For Love of the Game. I know what it feels like to stand on a mound with your arm falling off, hoping for one more inning. That would've been a great movie if, instead of taking the chick to the ballgame after her car broke down, he would've killed her and stuffed her in a dumpster. Wife and I went to see it and SHE'S saying, "Oh my God! Will you shut UP, you whiny bitch!" I couldn't disagree with you more. I really like Arrival. The director sets an environment which disorients the viewer. The disorientation perfectly compliments the story line. The soundtrack and the subtle sound effects at key moments in the film all work together to advance the narrative. The movie is much more than the language/time orientation MacGuffin.

One odd thing about baseball is that many people stop watching once their own team is out of it and don't really know guys on other teams unless they get tons of publicity like Judge or Harper. In a way, they are more provincial that football fans. everyone who has followed The NFL knows who the star QBs are and everyone used to watch the playoffs and the SB.
that's not only because football has become more popular but because it's a much shorter season than baseball with 16 games instead of 162. Even the most dedicated fan can't watch or listen to all the games their own team plays, much less follow the fortunes of other teams. You know the guys in your own division; not much at all about the guys in other divisions. Posted by: Donna&&&&&&V. at October 21, 2017 08:51 PM (P8951) 288

I can understand an interest in a competition. Who will win? I could probably get caught up in it again if I still had tv. I can also understand the desire to watch something unfolding *now*, not contrived beforehand, whose outcome is unknown. But what I don't get is the loyalty to a franchise. Any of the players could be traded off at any time. The franchise itself might move (ex. Dodgers). I do not grasp what constitutes this bond on the part of the fan.

I'm trying to find a decent adaptation of Quixote. I have Man of La Mancha here, but haven't watched it yet. Don't really expect that to do it. I have an old Russian version, and an old Spanish version. I bought the one made with Lithgow in the lead, but the bluray doesn't work on any of my devices, even though it said it would. Baron Muchausen is heavily inspired by Amadeus at the texture level. The budget was 9 times greater than Time Bandits, and 50% more than Return of the Jedi.
It's inventive and very replayable. https://youtu.be/1fbD0btGvBE Because the movie thread seems to want longer posts, I will paste what I said a few days ago: The English Patient had the most talented people and the most pedigreed awards possible, including the Oscar for best picture (one of Harvey's payoffs) and nominations for director and cinematography. At no point in three hours will you be slightly entertained or piqued. I can name twenty movies from the same year that are more replayable, more talked-about, more clever, more heart-felt, or more profitable. Iron Sky -- you know, that one about moon nazis -- is just about the greatest low-budget trash-genre movie of all time. It takes a campy shitty premise and ridiculous characters, and manages to satisfy every arc cleverly. The acting is funny and watchable. I even like ersatz Sarah Palin. I would not ask David S Goyer or John Hughes to improve upon it. They can't. It is a perfect little piece of trash. It is the Cistine Chapel painted with dry macaroni and glitter. I guess the lesson is "do humble things well" or something. Posted by: BourbonChicken at October 21, 2017 09:35 PM (rnAwa) 470

Posted by: Lizzy at October 21, 2017 08:08 PM (W+vEI) ------------------------------ I liked that movie. And I especially liked the ending because it struck me as true to life. As you say, it's exactly the kind of thing a female might do, even if she's a talented, competitive athlete. Of course, the moral to the story is that there are things more important than winning. Okay. But there is also the (unintended) moral: Whether you're a player or a fan, you don't want a woman on your team because she may sabotage a win for personal reasons. So he does two things of purpose in the movie: He mentors a kid who is just starting out, and he finds a woman with whom he can settle down. The end of his baseball career is an afterthought. Annie knew as much about baseball as any of the men on the field -- except maybe Crash. Her relationships with Nuke and Crash are part of what drives them on the field ("Wear my garter belt!") And though I'm not one* to awwwwwww tacked-on romances in action films or anything else, what elevates Bull Durham to greatness is that it's more than a baseball film. Like Tin Cup in that respect. Small wonder, both Ron Shelton pics. You may as well take out Costner's relationship to his dad in Field of Dreams.

TJM, the production costs of Metropolis basically drove Ufa right into the greedy clutches of Paramount who got unrestricted rights to adapt the movie as a result.
So the truncated Paramount version for decades was the only version. Mordor's colorized version with the Queen sound-track is based on this version. World War II threw a spanner into things with the Soviets looting Berlin including taking almost all the German film stock for Metropolis and a slew of other films. Meanwhile in far off Buenos Aires a copy of the original Ufa release was being shown with alterations. Then it vanished into film archive obscurity. If you have the Kino edition of Metropolis watch the documentary on the efforts to reassemble the original Ufa release. It is fascinating. Yes, the damn Yankees must lose. And then the Astros must lose to the Dodgers. Because that would make everything right in the world.
It's simply true. The one movie that truly captures the essence of baseball from a player's point of view is Bull Durham. To this day, female groupies are called "Annie's" and no other movie catches the superstitious bullshit as well nor acknowledges that there is something unquantifiable that makes baseball tick. Baseball, at it's core, is a very serious, very important game played by some of the silliest human beings you've ever met, and watched by the same. Without a sense of humor, baseball does nothing, and without it being quite serious, it isn't worth watching at all. I don't wanna hear any more crap about "not enough homers" or "no excitement." If you aren't excited about baseball, then you have no idea what is going on, and you owe it to yourself to find out. Plus, everywhere in this world where we have exported the game of baseball successfully, those are the places that remain peaceful allies over the long haul. It isn't a coincidence. I'm rooting for the 'stros because if they win, it will depress the TV execs. They want every WS to be LA v NY. Posted by: mnw at October 21, 2017 10:12 PM (YUN1C) +1 Posted by: Deplorable Ian Galt, still loving the Cubs, trying not to jinx the Asstros at October 21, 2017 10:13 PM (8iiMU) 595
Best version of Murder on the Orient Express is the Poirot TV show on the BBC. Not only was David Suchet born to play the part, but its emotionally powerful, even overwhelming. Poirot's innate sense of justice and what is right, the driving passion of his very being, is completely destroyed. Like his last story where... well I won't give away the final mystery. I don't like Christie's writing but she was really, really good.

Bet he could still put Ventura in a headlock and pummel away. Saw him pitch against the Red Sox when he was in his prime with the Angels. Had really good seats near the plate. I have never heard anything, before or since, like the sound of his fastball hitting the catchers mitt. It sounded like an explosion. Posted by: tu3031 at October 21, 2017 10:14 PM (O5Q3r) 597

According to PornHub, "Howard the Duck" does in fact have a sex scene.
Not in the version I saw. There's a scene where the very hot young Leah Thompson in lingerie seems to be coming on to the duck but she's just yanking his chain. And boy is she sizzling in that scene. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at October 21, 2017 10:16 PM (39g3+) 602
That's called the "cold-shoulder" cut.
Very chic right now but destined to fade quickly, I'd guess. It looks awkward, IMO. Posted by: Margarita DeVille at October 21, 2017 10:11 PM (0jtPF) --M. DeVille, the go-to fashionista at the HQ! there was a mock documentary on last night about the infamous Pine Tar game, which gave some interesting background - like how just how much the late 70s-early 80s Royals hated the Yankees, who regularly shat on the Royals playoff dreams. On the flip side, Billy Martin and the Yankees had their own persecution complex- when the commissioner and judge ruled in the Royals favor, they were sure it was because of Yankees hatred.

WTF you mean "almost" ? The Indians lost a week ago. I'd say "almost had a rematch" would require AT LEAST one team that played in the WS last year to make it all the way to the WS. It wasn't even CLOSE.

BTW, the Moneyball A's season ended when they ran into the greatest franchise in the history of sports - the NY Yankees. Many teams' fortunes came up short because of the Yankees, and a lot more will come up short in the near future because of those same Yankees.

Am I the only one who can't help but watch every baseball movie they make - good or bad? I'm not just talking half-way decent flicks such as Angels in the Outfield, the Scout or the Rookie, but even the truly bad like Major League 3: Back to the Minors, Little Big League and even Ed (Matt Leblanc and an ape).
As for Garp, it was enjoyable in part. John Irving was also made into movies with Simon Birch, Cider House Rules, The Hotel New Hampshire and The Door in the Floor. They are also enjoyable in part. Irving generally uses bizarre and even startling humor to dampen the melodrama and social activist story lines. This doesn't always work out on screen. The movie that won acclaim in Hollywood was, naturally, the one the removed the bizarre humor and amped up the social activism (abortion) instead. Go figure...
