In my case I was 8 at my grandfather's farm. Here is a photo of the riffle I inherited after he passed away. A .22 riffle. I've never actually owned a gun, partly because I've never been in a situation where I needed to have one, partly because I don't come from a "gun family," so to speak.
However, I did go to one gun-safety class a few years back, and got to practice firing a Glock 19 (23?) on the range. Turned out I was an excellent shot, at least by beginner standards. Posted by: T at October 21, 2017 05:32 PM (3e8Ue) 5

We learned to shoot with Benjamin pellet guns, and then knocked around with my dad's 20 gauge and 12 gauge. We had a hand held skeet launch we used to practice. He took us to trap shoot a few times too. We mostly hunted game birds and water fowl. As soon as we could comfortably raise and hold a shotgun against our shoulders, my dad taught us. Probably around 8 or 9 for each of us.

The first time I fired a firearm it was a 20 gauge shotgun at a Hunter Safety Course when I was in 3rd grade (8 years old) at a public school. I got two fire two shells at clay targets and I was super proud to be the only boy that hit both times in my class (two girls accomplished the same feat!). The moment motivated my father to take me out and let me and my brother shoot his .357 service revolver at targets in our yard.
Nowadays, that moment truly seems weird when I see kids suspended for Pop Tarts. Posted by: Malcolm Tent at October 21, 2017 05:42 PM (dXyq7) 24

'72 was a different time. Dad and Dick would let me sit in their laps and "steer" the Mach 1. I vividly remember Dick putting a cigarette pack on the dash and flooring it- it would end up in the back seat.

My first firearm shot was also a .22 rifle at age 10. My first gun of my own was a 12 ga Stevens double barrel at age 12. First gun I ever bought was a Colt .380 pocket pistol. $60 bucks out the door and I was 16. Last gun I bought was a G17. Next on my list is a Patriot Ordnance P415 Gen 4 Edge with 18 inch Wylde barrel. I might as well face it, I'm addicted to gubs.

I want a new 12 ga. shotgun for home and I've been looking at an Ithaca M37. I'd love an older one from the '70s but good luck finding it at a price/condition I could accept.

The first time I went shooting, I was 11 and it was as part of my pay for babysitting a Marine and his wife's baby. He took me to the gunnery range where we shot his scoped 30-06 bolt action at 300 yards. For an amateur, I did pretty good, inch and a half groups. Then he let me try his 1911 at 50 yards. I didn't do so good with it. I think I hit the target once out of 8 rounds. Then I shot his Colt .357 magnum with .38 special semi wadcutters. I did pretty good with it. Then we shot a flintlock rifle he'd brought along.
As far as the first guns I owned, one was a Glenfield .22 semiauto and a Revelation 12 gauge single shot shotgun. when I was in my early 20's. The rifle in the picture looks like either a Sears or Montgomery Wards, probably made by one of the major manufacturers and branded as Sears, ect. First gun shot. A Sears .22 bolt action single shot. I was probably 9 or so. I'd had a daisy pump bb gun and a Sears .22 pellet gun since I was 7.
First gun bought was a Winchester 94 in 30/30 my dad got me when I was 13 and could go deer hunting with him. First I bought myself was a Remington model 11 which was stolen along with my .22 and a single shot .410 which my dad had bought me also for rabbit hunting. First handgun was a used Ruger Security Six which I bought from a policeman at a gun show in 1976, 4 inch barrel blued steel. It was my nightstand gun for many years until I got my P226 Sig. I still have this and it shoots very nice. Posted by: geoffb at October 21, 2017 05:59 PM (zOpu5) 55
Aside from a BB gun, plinking at cans on the porch rail of a neighbors' house when I was about eleven or twelve - when I had done one hitch in the AF and suddenly had to get M-16 qualified. Shot well enough for an expert ribbon, to everyone's surprise save the instructor, who noted that women didn't have as much in the way of John Wayne illusions to get over, and on the range did as they were instructed. Some ten years later, had to qualify on a side-arm, in anticipation of a TDY to the Magic Kingdom.
Didn't much like either weapon: I have small hands, and in both cases, they were not a comfortable fit for me. Bought a Springfield Arms 9mm a couple of years ago. It's a Glock knock-off, and just feels comfortable to the hand. Gave a Weatherby shotgun to the Daughter Unit, and a 9mm of her choice. The Daughter Unit served two tours as a Marine and would really like a personal version of the M-16, but we're on a budget here ... Posted by: Sgt. Mom at October 21, 2017 06:00 PM (xnmPy) 56

First gun I shot was a .177 air rifle, which was mainly used to pick off sparrows nesting in my dad's shop and some other target practice. Later I went on to a Savage .22 pump and a Ruger 10/22.
After almost 20 years without much firearms exposure, I got a Remington 870 for home defense, then started dabbling in trap shooting. Later got a 9mm, a .380 carry weapon, .22 pistol, .22 rifle, .30-06 rifle, 5.56 scary black rifle, and a 12ga SA trap gun. Kids use(d) a .22 bolt action rifle, a .410 shotgun, and a 20ga SA shotgun. Those little single shot 22 rifles were made by a bunch of different companies, especially in the 1930s and 40s, maybe earlier. Ivor Johnson, Mossberg, H and R, and others. They were sold by Sears, Western Auto, Montgomery Wards, mail order, any place that sold guns. They might have a name but often did not. The simple ladder rear sight is surprisingly accurate.
I had two bought at a pawn shop for about 15 dollars and still have one. As long as the spring for the firing pin worked, they were pretty much fool proof. The other one I cut down the rear stock for my best friend's two little boys. I still take mine out for fun. I have 'better' 22 rifles but this one is still fun. 1975. I was 5. 20 ga. bolt action with 2 capacity magazine. Dad did the actual heavy lifting, holding and kinda just let me pull the trigger a few yards from the 50 gallon burn barrel. Quite an object lesson on the power of a firearm. I shared a bedroom with a brother 9 years my senior and all 3 of our firearms- 2 shot guns and a 22 pistol and ammo hung on a rack in our bedroom. First firearm was birthday gift at 12. H and R single shot 20 ga junior model. Kicked like a mule. Despite my exposure to firearms at such an early age I've never committed a firearm offence. Weird.

First gun fired? I think it was my dad's 12 gauge shotgun with light loads. I was a wee lad, and it kicked...a lot. But he also had a .22 pistol, and I might have fired that too. Damn...that was long time ago.
First gun owned was a gift from my father; a Colt 1911 Gold Cup. First gun purchased was a Colt .22LR target pistol. Fun little thing. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at October 21, 2017 06:25 PM (wYseH) 100
My parents were kidnapped and robbed at knifepoint by a couple of little gangbangers coming out of a square dance in Paramount Ca. My dad, who served throughout WWII and Korea, including having Zeros trying to sink his ship, really never recovered . They bought a gun, a .38 colt two inch and we went to the Long Beach police range for months learning to use it..We all got pretty good, but it wasn't enough for them. They still moved out of LA county, into deep, very red, Orange County which doubled their work commutes, and then fortified that house. I have no idea what happened to the weapon..

My first gun was a Daisy BB gun. That was a major concession as my mother was terrified of firearms. I don't know why, she had never been around any but it was a phobia.
The first real gun I shot was a 22 bolt action at Boy Scout camp, circa 1961. It was the highlight of the week. The first gun I owned was a Ruger Single-Six with the 9 1/2 inch barrel. Wish I still had it. The future Mrs. JTB fired it at an indoor range on our first date. She liked the shooting and was damn accurate. Thus began the respect (and caution) I have given her since. First gun was a 16ga Remington pump from Sears. I shot the thing loose, then graduated to a Marlin 39A .22 lever action, a tack driver used for squirrels. My older brother got Dad's 1911. What is it with this weekend?
My mom has a picture of me with my dad, I must be 3 maybe 4, he is behind me, arms around me and his hands around my hands, which are gripping what must have been his service .45. We would have been shooting at the burn barrel in the backyard in Daleville. I do not remember that at all. First time I remember was a .22 rifle at Cub Scout camp. When I was in the Army I carried a .45 - probably one of the last units in the Army to have them - and I carried a 203 because "Hello to my little friend." We had more weapons than people so I could pick and choose. First gun I purchased was a Mossberg 509A1. I wanted one in Marinecote but for whatever reason it wasn't available so its matte black. Got it right after Columbine because world seemed like it was going crazy. Posted by: blaster at October 21, 2017 06:44 PM (jHrzU) 132

And because it ejects down, the inside of my left wrist would be covered with painful little black circles. But I loved it, and we first shot it at my Uncle Bud's place in Ellenville. My grandfather's service pistol. Colt Model 1892 .38 caliber. He carried it to the Mexican Border after Pancho Villa's raid, and then to WWI with Pershing and the American Expeditionary Force. He served in the US 28th Division. For WWII he upgraded to a M1911 .45 caliber pistol. When he passed, my mom smuggled it from Penna to New Mexico....in her hand carry. For those with Ruger 10/22 rifles, Cabela has the Ruger BX trigger replacement drop in unit on sale. Picked one up today for 65 bucks but haven't installed it yet. They get a huge number of five star reviews. Supposed to drop the trigger pull from 6 pounds on the factory issue down to 2.5 to 3 pounds. That can turn an already great rifle into something better.

First gun I shot was the old man's .22 revolver when I was about 6. Shot the shit out of some beer cans out on the farm.
First I bought with my own money? Ruger P89 when I was in college. I owned some weird shit in college (not at once, a series of trades, Calico Liberty 100, Street Sweeper 12ga, .44 mag Desert Eagle. Nothing very practical but shit it was fun. Most recent? Ruger Precision Rifle in 6.5 Creedmore....that thing is a tack driver. First time out it put 5 shots through three holes you could cover up with a nickle at 100 yards. I haven't had it past 200 yards yet and honestly it is a bit boring at that range. Need to find a good 6-800 yard range to really test it. Posted by: DanInMN at October 21, 2017 06:56 PM (iUBrJ) 148
My first gun was a .22 H&R Sahara youth single shot blowback rifle. I got that in 1972 at age 7 and it became my son's first rifle at age 7 in 2013. I bought my 9 year old daughter a Savage "Rascal" .22 at age 8 last year for Christmas. I need to get my son an upgrade, likely this year. Probably a 10/22.
Most fun at the range, hard to pin that down. Most recently went to the plinking range with my son, daughter and father. I was using his .22 Browning Semi auto that he gave me a while back. A month or so before that I got my 1917 SMLE to the range that I did a nice amount of bedding work to using JB Weld. I'll be dammed if it didn't shoot great. Some of the ammo was head stamped 1918 as well. As with many others in this post I also have a Ruger "Six" in my case a 4" police six. Fun revolver. That .22 a Stevens? or don't you know?
My first gun was just as I got out of the Navy. Ruger .22 autoloader. With the slim barrel. Then went to a .25 colt pocket autoloader. Then an Ivers Johnson .38 (god I'm so ashamed) A genuine Saturday Night Special. No swing out cylinder. No. Just like the old time revolvers where you had to pull the center pin to remove the cylinder. Worked great though for the price: $50 in 1972. Eventually over time I traded or sold all my guns. Didn't feel the need for one. Lived in the city so no hunting or chance to target shoot and my neighborhood was low income but cool. The posses knew me and left me alone. Cause I left them alone. The assault weapons bill didn't bother me cause it wasn't really a blanket ban and it had an expiration date. Then the JEF steps up and scares the pants off me. Congress critters blather about gun control but unless there's an idiot in the WH that will sign the bill there's not much to worry about. And there he was. Yakking about things he knew nothing about. I now have 4 guns and mostly use them for target practice. Some lobbyist for the gun companies should thank the JEF for all the good work he did in arming America. I don't know if there are many muzzleloader shooters among the Horde. I mean traditional styles with patched round ball, not those new fangled in-line abominations. It is a different pace of shooting and perhaps a bit more involved but tremendous fun.
If you just want to blow off some rounds quickly, BP guns aren't for you. But if you have an appreciation of history on many levels, might enjoy making some of your gear and accoutrements, and want a relaxed pace of shooting, you should look into it. It's a very satisfying aspect of the firearms hobby. Posted by: JTB at October 21, 2017 07:08 PM (V+03K) 163

My Great Uncle Earle gave me my first gun, a rifle, when I was, I dunno, my parents were separated but not yet divorced, maybe 13? He was one of my Grandma's numerous siblings. For reasons still not clear to me, my mother allowed me to retain possession of it.

My vote that the pictured gun is a Winchester Model 94. Bolt action Winchesters were not widely offered but the .22 bolt-action was one of the few, a starter model (a boys gun). The value of that gun is more than a comparable condition/vintage as it was indeed an atypical action for Winchester. I had one and it too had no markings if I recall.

There's a wedding happening right now at the shooting range just outside the little Norwegian village where we are staying. I thought perhaps this was in conjunction with the Lutefisk and Meatball supper being dished up by the local Lutheran church tonight. But, no. They are two separate events. It would be most unfortunate if they were mistakenly combined.

first gun I shot was a .22 pistol at age 4. I was forced to do it by my mean uncles. I didnlt want to do it and cried. But after that I took to shootin irons like a duck to water.
First firearm was a 22 rifle I got for Christmas (a Glenfield, with no serial number since it was prior to the 1968 law). I still have it. It has some wear and tear on it but still goes bang. I had to ship it to myself across state lines once and had to argue with the young feller at the 01 dealer (who couldn't find the serial number) that it never had a serial number. Finally the owner came out and said "he is right, it doesn't have a SN. 22's didn't have to have SN's prior to 196. Posted by: The Walking Dude at October 21, 2017 07:15 PM (cCxiu) 179

First gun I ever fired was a .22 pistol owned by the father of friends. That was when I was about 14 or so. I got my first gun, a .50 caplock carbine, about a year later, and shot that and my father's new-to-him caplock longrifle a few times until I finally finished putting together what I really wanted - an honest-to-God flintlock longrifle. Finished that when I was in college, and then never really got to shoot it much after all those years of work because I never had the money for powder and gas to get to the range.
Wasn't until Obama was about to be elected that I decided to get a breechloader, an Ishapore-made SMLE in .303. That was my best fighting rifle up until I was finally moved to get an AR last summer. Posted by: Grey Fox at October 21, 2017 07:32 PM (4mE7F) 207

First gun was a Stevens single shot bolt action in .22LR a lot like the one pictured above. Got it when I was 13. Had it for many years. First gun I actually shot (age 10) was a Winchester .22LR semi auto that had belonged to my grandfather. Ended up with that one for many years also.
First gun I bought was a S&W Model 15 Combat Masterpiece in .38 special. Bought it with my very first check earned working in IT. Owned that one for many many years. Of course pulling the lanyard on a 155mm... Ever slap fire one? Older, big silver tube model. M119A? Sorry. Been over 40 years. Screw primer holder in to just shy of locking into place. Slap striker up with right hand and smack primer handle away from you, to begin unscrewing process, at the same time. After slapping striker right hand continues up to push breech handle lock button as it's grabbing handle and yanking it down. Believe it or not, after a bit of practice I and one other got fast enough that we handle down quick enough that the recoil was what was pulling the breech open. Could get 3 rounds downrange very quickly. Was kind of important in the early 70's. Think direct fire, fleshette rounds. Smart Ass pumped the gun ten times and shot me in the thigh. That little ball of Bazooka went thru my Levis and I had to extract it from my bleeding leg wound with a pocket knife.

Short Magazine Lee Enfield, aka ShtLE aka SMLA aka Rifle No. 1 Mk. III*. It has gone by a couple different names over the years.
Not to be confused with the No.4mk1 and variants, which are often erroneously called SMLEs also. Posted by: Grey Fox at October 21, 2017 07:51 PM Yeah, that sounds like it. Good rifle. My cousin who is a bit on the crazy side was always coming up with something that didn't make a lot of sense. He made a zip gun. Barrel too large for a .22, so he said lets use a .22 magnum. We took out the lead, emptied the powder, and put the lead back in. He then said I want you to shoot me. I said why not, the cap can't provide a lot of power. There was possibly a couple of flakes of powder that didn't come out. He said it hurt really bad. Not my idea.

1st rifle - Remington 22 Fieldmaster at about 10. Next was given to me by my granddad - a Savage 99 30-30 rolling block lever action - really short barrel, with the Wells Fargo Stagecoach logo branded/cut into the stock. (the WF logo was probably fake, but still cool) excellent for whitetail/coyotes in AZ. Both stolen in the 70's. Also had my other granddad's WWI officer's Colt .380 auto. Now, a .22 cal air rifle from Portugal for critter removal, slowly rebuilding the armory with more modern and fun to shoot things that go bang.

Got a Remington 500 (22 caliber) tube-fed rifle for my 12th birthday. Prior to that my father signed me up with a local rifle club to teach me the all-importnt basics. The rifle had a very long barrel and a short fore-stock so it looked a bit like Natty Bumpo's. I think it took 13 or 14 long rifles in the tube , so it was my first assault weapon. Wasn't sure how long I'd have the chance to do so. It's registered in CA, but I guess I should figure out if I've gotta do something here. I can't believe they're gonna be super picky. Not sure I even care. Thinking about a nine and a long gun now. Posted by: 1HooLurks at October 21, 2017 09:08 PM (oYbia) Heh, sweet. You only need a permit to carry (open or concealed). I should notify the State of California about my unfortunate boating accident. Bastids would probably send me a bill for processing the information. Scoremaster model 611x (probably about 1962?), and that Glock 26 with the red dot doesn't look too concealed carry, but it's cool and the gang.
Posted by: Mike Pitzler ---------- Surely a model, 511, no? Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at October 21, 2017 08:14 PM (5OO3x) Yes. 511x. Just ordered a 10 round magazine from Midway for $20. That .22 looks a lot like my Cooey Model 250, especially around the bolt. Now, Winchester bought out Cooey, so the nameless gun could also be a Winchester made for Sears.

349,
That Pioneer looks a lot like my first gun that Sears sold but this picture... http://tinyurl.com/y6uzy8d3 Doesn't match the one in the post pictures because it doesn't have that knob on the end of the bolt. Made by Harrington and Richardson who made many inexpensive guns. Posted by: geoffb at October 21, 2017 10:05 PM (zOpu5) 384

Posted by: Mike Pitzler -------- Oh. Well, that's good info, mine is (okay, 'was', boating accident) six rounds. As an aside, the 511 was one of those guns (in this 'gun') available as a smoothbore, for .22 shot shells. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at October 21, 2017 10:12 PM (w1zJX) 385

My first shot was with a Walther PPK (9mm kurz) at the LA Gun Club during college. My first purchase was 10 years later when the Napa PD sold off their 9mm SIG P226s. I bought one of those complete with standard capacity magazines. That was 20 years back!

The .22 rifle looks like a Marlin Model 100. That was my first rifle also. Mine is a Model 100G. The barrel is a little shorter than yours. I still have it in the gun safe.

Our grandfather (WW I vet) had a gun collection; too many to count. After he died, our grandmother sold almost all of them. :-((( Our dad inherited a beautiful Winchester double-barrelled 12-gauge, a Colt .45 revolver, and our mom got our grandmother's little revolver.
That one has a story: Our grandfather travelled a lot on business during the Great Depression, and our grandmother said to him one day, "Honey, I need to be able to protect the children and the servants when you're not here. Would you get me a gun that fits my hand?" So he went to the hardware store (you could do that in 1930) and bought her an HR breakback .32 cal. short round revolver. Cute as a bug's ear and it fit her hand just fine. So the "Lady Pistol" in our family is that little .32. Here's the problem, tho: short rounds are only manufactured about one month out of the year, and they're hard to find at Cadell's and Wally World, etc. Posted by: Beverly at October 22, 2017 01:03 AM (AFhtN) 391
I went to Gun for Hire in Jersey and tried out a .38 revolver (fun!) and a Glock (wicked!). I encourage any of the femmes to do likewise: it's a blast.

My father had a .22 LR Browning rifle, that was probably the 1st gun i ever fired. Either that or his RG pistol that took the same ammo. Yes, the same people that made Hinkley's gun, just not the same model. Paternal grandfather gifted me a 20. ga single shot from New England Firearms for 13th birthday. We were cutting the soybeans a month later, the whole family was blasting rabbits, i couldn't hit one to save my life! Gun hid in a closet for years and years in embarrassment. Passed to little sister for HD gun, she passed it back to me. First gun with my own money, Remington's 1911 R1, i blame Jeff Cooper and Buffalo Bill Cody!

The rifle looks like a 'Spavia'. I had one for a short while. The first rifle I shot was at Camden Park, the shooting gallery, it was a 22 short semi auto rifle, I was 6 years old. The first rifle I owned was a winchester 22 long, lever action, single shot. I was 10 I think :-)

Late to the party but have to chime in, because gun thread.
The first weapon I ever fired was a BAR, semi-auto. Frelling 14 pounds, I think. I think the neighbor was trolling me. Next was a classic .22 bolt action with 5 shot detachable magazine at Eagle Lake camp in Colorado. My dad, Marlin, bought me a Marlin .22 with a 7 round detachable magazine. I suspect the name thing helped as my dad does not like guns and neither does my mom. First pistol I ever shot/owned was a Taurus PT-92, bought back in 1991. I think I've shot over 20k rounds through that thing. It works, dunno about the new models but the early 90's Taurus is basically a Beretta with a frame-mounted safety. 43 Winchester made a basic single shot .22 bolt like that. Made tons of them, no serial numbers, hardly any markings.
Well they had serial numbers in Australia. They were still selling them in the early 1970s but thats when Aussies started mking enough income for magazine-fed .22s. My first real shot (apart from air rifles) was a 7.62 Omark M44 with peep sights at 900 metres, at a country fullbore rifle club when I was maybe 15. Good score too. Your rifle looks like my first gun (which I still have also). I was 9 years old and it was a gift from an uncle. It is a Marlin 22 caliber. I taught all my kids to shoot with it and it is still one of favorite to shoot.

It looks a lot like the Remington my grandfather used to teach me to shoot when I was about 6 - but without some closer shots of the barrel and breech area, can't tell.

The first weapon I ever shot was my Dad's Remington 550-1 a .22 lr he and we hunted squirrels with My Brother got this when Dad passed away.
The next weapon I fired was a Savage-Stevens 940A in 20 gauge Dad used this to hunt rabbits. My first weapon was a Springfield bolt action single shot .410 I used to hunt rabbits and squirrels with Dad and my brother who had a Savage Stevens .410 as well. Over the years I was able to shoot a variety of weapons, but the very next weapon that was handed to me was a a loaner was a Harrington and Richards M-14 rifle in 7.62 x 51 mm NATO. Along with a Remington rand M-1911A1 in .45 acp. After that I was variously armed with bigger and more lethal weapons. Now I have weapons I have collected over the years. My most recent buy is a Ruger semi auto. Posted by: obsidian at October 22, 2017 12:25 PM (ARK2U) 400
First gun I shot, I was 8. Remington #6 rolling block single shot .22, The first gun I bought was a S&W model 29 pistol.

I want a new 12 ga. shotgun for home and I've been looking at an Ithaca
M37. I'd love an older one from the '70s but good luck finding it at a price/condition I could accept. I've been shooting my son's Mossberg M590 lately - I like it enough but it's his. Do like the safety position though. Are the newer Ithacas build as solid as the older ones were? Bought one about 3 years ago and have been very satisfied with it.
