A Little of This. A Little of That.

The Birds, The Bees and an Amorous bull.

A vet tech takes home a new pet. The problem with this new pet? It was taken to the vet to be euthanized.

Not quite the horse scene from 'Animal House'.

Lucky dog.

Not all dogs hate UPS drivers. Here's proof.

Not every dog wants to work for 'The Man'.

Oops these cuties took a wrong turn.

Nothin' quite like azalea fed venison!
This young buck basically lived in my front yard last year for a few months, but I haven't seen him this year. Actually, venison joke aside, I kind of hope he's ok! -

All of our pets are either walkons or "gifts". Mittens appeared on our doorstep a few years ago. She is quite the social cat and follows her friend Pugs on all our walks. Fortunately, we live on a quiet dead end street, in the country.
Our gray tabby, Big Boy aka Ciccino. "Sweet Little Thing" in Italian, came from Arezzo, Italy in 2009. Yes, Mom, I'll be back to get him as soon as I get settled. Sure, famous last words! I used to call Ciccino "cicci" until I finally got our vet to tell me why everyone laughed when I called him Cicci.
Pugs loves everyone and especially his cat friends. We've had him since 2015, when our vet called telling us he needed a home. We're his fourth family and his last.
We're off to bed, hubby gets the least room. Big Boy and Pugs the most, Mittens and I share the rest of the space.
-Lurker, annieb
Ps that's a coonskin cap on the wine glass.

Thank you annieb. What a nice group of "kids" you have there.

Leo made a previous appearance at 10 weeks of age, weighing in at 12 pounds.

Here he is at 6 months and 40 pounds.

Note the primary dog is bored of photos. -blaster

No mischief in those eyes of Leo. Yeah right. Cute dog.

So - Good Old Publius does not, himself, have dogs - what with being a denizen of that most horrific of places known as the City of New York. However, Publius grew up with dogs and his famiglia has always kept them close. So, having recently visited the Pater and Mater Familia of the Redux clan, in the wilds of Nova Scotia, I give to you pictures of the Redux Clan's two remaining pooches. The first is Molly - she is a golden/lab mix and an absolute doll. My parents got her from a nearby family which could no longer keep her (and after having bred her etc.). She is a good hunting dog and loves the cool waters of our lake and the beach. Give her a stuffed toy and she will, lovingly, disembowel it. She is also addicted to petting - and if you pet her and stop she will put a paw right on your crotch, or other nearest body part, but usually your crotch, and then look at you with those mournful eyes until you pet her again. The other dog is a greyhound/saluki/German shepherd mix (!) and her name is "Turnpike Sally" because she was found wandering around the NJ Turnpike, emaciated and very scared. It apparently snarled traffic for a while until animal control got hold of her. Poor thing. Anyway - the Redux Clan fell in love, adopted her and shipped her to the compound in Canada. She used to be absolutely scared of everyone and over protective of the Redux parents. Yet time heals all wounds and she is the sweetest thing you will ever meet now - but is fast as the dickens and wily. She has a wonderful pampered life chasing ground squirrels at my parents' place. Here she is lounging on the Persian - no . . . the carpet, not the cat!. Aaah - `tis the life! "Good dog. Good dog."

Pax Ex.

Publius Redux

Thank you for thinking of us and submitting those photos. It is nice to know those dogs have a tough life. Real tough!

Hi it's Keena.
Never thought I was a cat person til a part Maine coon stray adopted us many years ago.
He's 27 lbs and very loving w us but a big hunter. He even outsmarted a coyote. He kills everything: rats, mice, voles, birds, lizards and yes, baby bunnies. This is him at what we estimate is age 14!
I just call him Kitty.

Thanks Keena. Quite the hunter you have on your hands there.

1 Mis Hum,

Thanks for posting the photo of my parents 3 cats on last Saturday's Pet Thread. I would have thanked you then, but I didn't see the thread until Sunday morning.

18 I can finally participate in Pet Thread.
Our adopted cat, Lexi, climbs up on top of my chair & sits on top (I sleep on it & have for years) & she hits me on top of my head until I wake up to feed her! One night it was 3 am, past three days itis %;30.
Last night she wouldn't leave me alone, hitting me on head until I gave her can of soft food around 10 pm.

She was abandoned & no one knows how long & Ithink she's afraid she won't eat again soon.
I'm feeding her as much as she wants, within reason, for 3 more weeks. By then I think she should know this is where she is staying.

Posted by: Carol at October 21, 2017 03:24 PM (NKOy9)

19 Putting a pet to sleep is an awful thing to have to do and choice to make. I do make the choice to stay during the process so my beloved friend is being held by me at the end for whatever comfort that can provide (probably to both of us).

Never heard of a vet making a unilateral, secret decision like that before. Just wow.

27 Great photos and stories about the pet morons. A local nursery has a pet Halloween contest the Saturday before. We are talking about a ton of cute. Just got back from the pet store. Mrs. JTB decided to indulge and got a bumble bee costume for Prince the poodle. He loves being dressed up in it, wiggling even more than usual. (Or he just loves the extra attention. He is cheap that way.) If we can get to the contest next week we will try to get some photos.

28 I have two cats. Both rescues. We got the older one to replace the best of all kitties. She didn't love us very much, so we got another because why not? He is more dog than cat. Plays fetch, follows us around, and continually gets in the way. They have bonded which is nice. They kill every bug that enters my house. Once a flying squirrel got in my house and they rounded him up quite nicely too. So, all in all they are keepers.

Be careful with leashing a dog to any place where he can make a run for it and up hanging himself.

My friend lost his small dog after tying her up on the back porch so she could enjoy the outside without the worry of her running away into the street.

She decided to jump off the deck and chase something, but the leash wasn't long enough for her to make it to the ground. She was found hanging.

Carol. Oh, Carol. It's VERY hard to cut back their rations once they get used to pigging out. I say that as the mommy of Baby Zoey, the pudgy princess. We all lost a bunch of weight with the move and the drive. She's down from 18 lbs to a bit over 16 and I plan to keep her that way. But it will always be a struggle.

45 Here's my only advice to a new pet parent, cat, dog, kitten, puppy. Do NOT feed them the minute you get up in the morning. Because they aren't stupid and they will start waking you up for food. Get up, pay them attention, give them love, play with them, go about your business. But if you allow them to associate your getting out of bed with food in their faces, you will regret it. Sooner than later.

Carol, the problem is, if she's been on the street she will have "food insecurity" all her life. I've always done the free feed with my cats. Baby Zoey was a bottle baby and, well, if Hoover made a cat, she'd be it. She just can't stop. It's hard because Cecil could (and, at this stage of his life, should) have access to food 24/7. I'd be real careful. Kitties with food issues get fat, they get diabetes, all kinds of bad stuff. She doesn't need to gain the weight right this minute. Gradual is better. It's food. It's not love.

She tried to catch a UPS truck as it was pulling it of our driveway once...ended up with a scraped up leg. Driver felt horrible but I told him it wasn't his fault. She's listed in their system as 'bad dog'. But she's really all bark...has never bit anyone in her life.

67 Peaches,
I will listen to you about the feeding,

She gets plenty of love. She likes being in same room with me. This morning I got up for two minutes fron my kitchen chair & she jumped on it. She wouldn't move to leave me any room to sit on, I had one cheek on chair, other off. She doesn't like to sit on my lap, but near me. She liked it under one coffee table in the living room, but I have home & cell phones within easy reach. They woke her up a few times and she's found quiet spot in here,
My ipad, Mac also ring and announce and they're all within 3 feet of each other, plus all announce including home phone.
She will be looking for another spot the next time all the idiots call about electric, credit card rates, etc even though I have had both on Do not Call since 2003.
Repeat callers are reported to FTC! I have had enough.

70 Carol, I know that cats and dogs are different and even all cats are different from each other as all dogs are. We rescued a greyhound back in the day and it took him about a month to realize the food was not going anywhere and that he didn't need to worry when his next meal was coming and how much it would be. He stopped wolfing everything down in a hot second eventually.

That said, I just don't want to withhold food from my pets "for their own good" unless there's a drastic problem. They're animals for goodness sake. They don't care if they live an extra year by staying healthy. They have no conception of their future or mortality. They care about food, soft places to sleep, and most importantly, the love of their humans. They don't care about living to see their great-great grand kitties/puppies.

74 And also Carol, thanks for the info on Hrothgar. That has been a burden on my mind. I have been praying for him and the rest of the family (especially the children). It's all we can do. I lost a son 13 years ago and know that had it not been for the prayers of many wonderful folks - some of whom I didn't even know personally - I would have lost my mind.

77 Carol, thank you for the update on Hrothgar. I think about him often, and I understand his desire to be left alone. Going through that kind of grief is exhausting enough without having to deal with well-meaning friends. One often feels called upon to make them feel better, and it's draining.

79 There's no "almost famous" about it. This is one of those things that all civilized cultures have in common, not to mention that civilized places have the expendable income to support pets in addition to families where fathers play a part, so I guess that leaves 20% of America out of it ... but I digress ... all I really wanted to say was how much stress is dissipated, every Saturday, by the wonderful pet thread. Thanks.

Lab in the pic with the burger could be Spastic Lab. Don't know about that one, but I could make her drop the burger with the command "leave it".

She also sits when being fed and waits until the release word. You need to start this from puppyhood to ensure they always obey.

Did the same for when she's being petted, or greeting someone I only let her up on me.

All this is part of good canine citizenry.

81 When I first went to Africa, our group (it was a charity trip) visited a schoolhouse, where the students were probably about first graders.

It was utterly bare bones: The teacher had a humble desk and chair, and the students sat on mats. We handed out snacks (wrapped cookies) to the students, and while each of them fiddled a bit with his treat, none of them at all tore into it.

Africa is rife with contradictions: sometimes it's almost a Hobbesian state of nature, and I've also seen where in my experience there is a virtuous respect for moral authority: no doubt those students obeyed their teachers day in and day out.

82 Some real adorable animal friends, as always. Out in the Iowa countryside, dogs and cats that kill varmints are our proud companions. They catch mice, bunnies, frighten away thieving deer, and scare the caca out of coyotes. They are the early warning when something comes down our long gravel lane. The dogs give me a chance to fetch the 12 guage and 357, and time to put on ear plugs.

iPad spelling. We have had her a week today. If Lexi develops diabetes it will cost $, but I completely disagree with theory of 100% dry food. I like Goldfish once in a while, but wouldn't want to eat only them, plus they have too much salt & my lips burn for hours.

84 My Gennifer is better trained than I am. If I tell her when opening the front door "no squirrel chasing" she gets directly into the car or heels. If I don't she goes after the yard squirrel dedicated to torturing her. If she takes off after it, it's my fault for forgetting the words. Can't call them back mid-squirrel chase, so I have to wait till the damn thing is treed and then say her name. She always gives me that, "Whoa, did I just do that?" look. The some long argument about "instinct." Blah blah, I tell her.

88 I went to an all-girls prep school run by ancient (and I mean ancient) old school marms. We stood in unison when a teacher or senior entered the room. Sat without "fidgeting," ma'amed and sired, pushed in our chairs, cleaned the cafeteria, etc. Weirdly, I remember no discipline. It was expected and everyone did it.

My kids go to catholic school and when they're in kindergarten sit on the floor for assemblies or in mass without any issues. I got a note from my son's 8th-grade teacher on Thursday that he had "chatted" during class. I had the 'disruption" talk with him and that was it.

We've done a grave disservice to kids by allowing horrific behavior. My older boys in the work force see instances all the time of people not having a clue how to behave in public.

This with no real punishments or anything, just expectations.

89 Some thoughts for Carol about food-insecure kittehs-- I've had two who were food-insecure and fostered several other kittehs who were also food-seeking furry missiles. There are some things you can offer Lexi that might reassure her she is loved (and living in a forever home) without giving her more food than is good for her. 1) Does she like catnip? Dried catnip or a catnip-stuffed toy is a (literally) mouth-watering treat for many kittehs. 2) Cat grass. You can buy kits with potting soil and a mixture of wheat and barley seeds that will sprout in about a week after watering. I've also bought small pots of fresh wheat grass at the local Petco from time to time. Most of my kittehs have enjoyed chewing on the grass. It's not the same as food, but it seems to satisfy their need for a snack. 3) You could try giving Lexi small portions of cat food more often rather than two larger meals. My Coco likes kibble so much she will wolf down her daily allowance, then drink a lot of water, then throw up the food because her belly feels too full. I learned that dividing her daily kibble quota into three or even four small mini-meals works just fine-- she's happy, she's not eating more than she should (she used to eat my dude cat's kibble when he wasn't watching), and I'm not stepping on piles of barfed-up kibble on the kitchen floor.

I'm glad to know, BTW, that Lexi is lapping up all the love you can give her.

92 there is a right way and a wrong way to adopt a pet that was given up for euthanasia. my Wife worked as a vet tech for a number of years - and one of the practices regular patients was a ~7yr old long hair ginger cat that was brought in with a major urinary blockage and in really bad shape. the people who had the cat were heartbroken and wanted to end his suffering, and couldn't afford anything more than that. So they paid and left. My Wife had a feeling about this cat so she called them up and offered to refund them their money and have them sign over the animal and she would be responsible for him. it was a gamble because he was in a real bad way.

That cat lived another 10yrs.

101 Wow, that vet story is weird. I had to put down my first kitty and nothing could have torn me away from her. I wanted her to know she was loved to the very last second. My husband slept on the kitchen floor with his 14-yr-old Dalmatian after she had a paralyzing stroke and she died in his arms.

The only thing I feel that was truly wrong here is the vet taking the money for the euthanasia.

Something else that was done with Liz from the start was to teach her that coming to me was ALWAYS a good thing, no matter the circumstance. That was and is a form of protection that she instantly break away and come when called.

Have no problem rewarding desired behavior with food, I carry a handful of her dry food for that.

Currently, we're working on leash free walking, with her at the heel position, both left and right side. So far, VERY good.

My younger brother was at death's door in March-July & beyond of 2013. I came here to ask for prayers for him, but he's alive & was in hospital in Maine when he had 4 infections. Maine Hospital had him on vent for 10-11 days & when they woke him up he couldn't move. One idiot suggested he may have had stroke & they waited 8 days to do a full body MRI. He needed immediate neck surgery because infection was in his neck and surgeon removed infected discs & he is considered quadriplegic & was going to spend rest of his life in nursing home.

He transferred to home in MA neared & kids. In May his ex called to tell me he had to have tracheotomy & asked what I thought, I said if he needs it, it is only temporary.she & son had to have meeting at hospital & it was tracheostomy (permanent) b/c he had been on vent so many times since August 2014 & if they did not agree they would disconnect him & he would die. They agreed & now he is going to spend life in hospital. Only four hospitals in Massachusetts
Can take care of people with them. But he ultimately agreed to it.

129 I lost a beloved dog this week.

She was old, she just didn't seem it to me. At all.

She'd passed a routine vet checkup a week before. She was energetic and happy until one day before the end. That day she just stopped during a walk, decided it was a good time to lie down and rest.

Later in the day the vet identified the problem, prognosis 100% bad, timeline short. She must have been ill for months. There was no treating the cause, but treating the symptom wouldn't hurt her. It might buy us a good month, or a few hours. We rolled the dice.

What it bought her was one more night at home for the kids, to whom we'd broken the news, to see her cheerful and on her feet; one more happy morning walk; one more barked-for breakfast - then an hour later she lay down again. To rest awhile.

She had a good life, loved, was loved. A lot.

I'm sorry about your dog, but he had a good life, I know it still hurts.

141 The bunny that Keena has might not be a juvenile... Where we live our cat regularly brings in Brush Rabbits that are full grown at that size.

My wife's cousin, and orthopedic surgeon, was visiting us and remarked about our cat's surgical abilities... he very often manages to eat a mouse without consuming any of the entrails, and the doc was amazed that he could do that using teeth and claws alone.

142 We have a doggie guest, of sorts tonight. Got home from watching the neighbor girl in a play, Aristocats Kids, very cute. Well the neighbor shout out there's a chocolate lab oose, but not ours bigger.
They got a lease on it and the older daughter put a pic on Snapchat.
One of her friends recognized it as belonging to her neighbor. They took it home but there was an older lady there w/ dementia, said it belonged to her son. So they didn't leave it w/ her, she's probably the reason the dog got loose. Son was at church.
So he's on our dog run lease between the deck and garage for now. Hopefully he gets home and retrieves the dog soon. It's one big lab, ours is 95 lbs and this one is much bigger, well and fatter.

And prayers up from here for Rita.
