Is This Something? ISIS "Capital" Raqqa Now Claimed to be Under Control of US-Backed Syrian Kurdish and Arab Forces

Well, I guess it's good that some ISIS guys were killed, but we'll have to see if the US backed forces are much better.

Probably at least somewhat better, at least.

An alliance of Syrian Kurdish and Arab fighters, who are backed by the United States, announced they have taken full control of the Islamic State's so-called "capital" of Raqqa, Syria.

Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) spokesman Talal Sello released a statement on Tuesday afternoon announcing that the fighting was over after a four-month assault, BBC reports.

The SDF is expected to make a formal declaration of the city's liberation in the near future. The final assault came at the end of three years of IS control in the city, and involved a final stand from up to 300 IS militants, according to the the BBC.

Earlier on Tuesday, the SDF cleared the last two major IS positions in Raqqa – the municipal stadium and the National Hospital.

Reuters news agency reported that fighters raised the flag of Popular Protection Units, a Kurdish militia that dominates the SDF, inside the stadium and celebrated in the streets and chanted slogans from their vehicles.

If you click on the link, you'll see a picture of female fighter, who I'm gonna guess is a Kurd (just because we hear about Kurdish female fighters) holding aloft the flag of the Syrian Democrat Forces.

It's a good picture. I wish I could be as hopeful about it as I might have been back in 2004.

Ah well -- I will choose to be optimistic and declare this to be Really Something.

Bonus: The SDF is primarily Kurdish and has declared their parts of the former state of Syria to be autonomous. This angers Turkey. And that's a good thing.

I would like to arm these guys up so they can fight the Turks.

Feeling Better: The SDF mocks ISIS by doing donuts in Al-Naim square -- which ISIS had done when they took the city in 2014.

Yeah, ace, it's something, and it's good. SDF or its components, separate or together, don't have to be (and likely aren't) some righteous pure band of boy scouts.

Very bad, very important neighborhood. Some are clearly enemies, and dangerous. Some less of either, some a lot less of either. Worst ones getting defeated = good for us.

Recall it was very much in our interest that one of the worst regimes in history - Stalin's - survived, so that they could, together with us and the Brits/Commonwealth, beat the Germans. And then, nearly over-night, that regime became our global enemy for several generations. Life rarely resembles the crappy fictional stuff people seem to love.

Iraqis would likely find a way to be stupid, even without the enstupiding influence of Tehran at the moment. And moving on Kirkuk is stupid. Being under a Stalinist system for several generations, most Iraqis seemed to lose any adult sense of how things work (well).

There has been conflict and angling and maneuvering and skullduggery in Kirkuk since Saddam's regime fell. Almost every day, it's never stopped. But Baghdad is making a big mistake if they think they can win it all (the $$$$$) there. Kurds have lots of pressure points to use.

Tinfoil, inertia, the greatest force in nature.

You might ask why Germany is still in NATO. Or why NATO still exists.

In fact, these questions were asked by some, waaay back in the 90s. They got no serious answers. Since then "NATO" has become even more of a farce. On the practical level, where it matters.

Inertia.

Likely a 4 or a 5 weight. Depending on the size of the river/stream and of the fish.

Small creeks, occasional fish up to 18-20" on the dry. 3-4 weight

Med Creek / small river, occasional fish up to 22-24".
5 Weight

Larger River / Lake, occasional fish 24-30" .
6 Weight

If you want a Bass / Trout utility rod - Get my email from the Dildo and I will send you one.

As far as brands go, pick a size and I will let you know which Brand / Model would likely be your best bet.

Most Fly Rods Models span too wide a range 2wt - 10 wt. You want to choose a model that was based / designed around your usage before it was filled out to make an entire model line.

Yes.

But, Fast Rods are fragile, and the chew through tippet and leaders. So, shops love to push them. Hard to learn a proper cast with one, though.

I prefer med-fast action for 90% of applications.

190 >>. Hoping for something good but less expensive for a little 7' 9" Powell 4/5 wt that's nice for dries, small streams, tight quarters, etc.

I might. Might. Have a 4/5 sized, Machined Aluminum Reel (Semi-Sealed Disc) downstairs. Chinese manufactured.

Equivalent to the Cabelas, Bass Pro and such branded reels.

If not, I am pretty sure I have a nice alloy one that will match that rod.

I have a bunch of backstock from when I dissolved our Rod Co.

195 185 Are Kurds like the mythical "moderate Muslim"?

Ie. do they just want to be left alone, and have no interest in funding terrorism or engaging in expansionism?

++++++++++

there's like a two step shuffle.

as if we have to reward any random nationality on earth with mass immigration to the West just because they act like normal people.

second, the kurds are good muslims but notice they aren't on a lefty sponsored hijrah to the west.

I know, right?

as if his position is so secure, he can dictate US immigration policy.

Let's just read the 14th amendment as granting the world a right to come to america just because...get this...every person in the world has an ethnicity and a religion.

wanna stop a particular person with a combination of a particular race/ethnicity...you are either creating a special class that discriminates against other or discrmiinating against another class.

duh. The left likes to read these amendments as suicide bombs.

I'd heard Zoroastrians were really dwindling as far as numbers. Nice to know there are a few surviving ones among the Kurds. Lot of debate over how much influence it had over Judaism and Christianity (ie. a devil who was almost equal and opposite to God).
