Longtime Hillary Pollster Mark Penn: You Know, It's Not Really Credible That Russia Could, or Would Even Think It Could, Swing an Election In Which $2.5 Billion Was Spent With $100,000 in FaceBook Ads (Which Themselves Had Mixed Messages)

Salon's Hot 25 hardest hit.

In an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal:

[C]onsider the scale of American presidential elections. Hillary Clinton’s total campaign budget, including associated committees, was $1.4 billion. Mr. Trump and his allies had about $1 billion. Even a full $100,000 of Russian ads would have erased just 0.025% of Hillary’s financial advantage. In the last week of the campaign alone, Mrs. Clinton’s super PAC dumped $6 million in ads into Florida, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

I have 40 years of experience in politics, and this Russian ad buy, mostly after the election anyway, simply does not add up to a carefully targeted campaign to move voters.

But the Salon Hot 25 who worship Jake Tapper think this is a plausible reason why their constant attacks on conservatives who thought had just a chance to win were actually justified. A conspiracy theory created to salve their bloated but bruised egos.

It's always amusing when those who fulminate the hottest against conspiracy theories dabble in (or dive right into) them themselves.

55 The sheer screaming stupidity of leftists is jaw-dropping. That anyone could seriously think Hillary lost because of "Russian intervention" is a sad commentary on the leftists among us. As far as rigging elections, I never hear of voter boxes stuffed with ballots found floating in the waters of Republican-controlled areas, or in the trunks of Republican cars. I don't think the Republicans gerrymandered districts to obscenely manipulate the electoral constituency. I don't remember a Republican president prancing around foreign nations telling them how to vote and threatening them with trade sanctions if they don't vote the way he dictates. I don't remember a Republican president actively engaged in funding opposition in Israel (our ally) to topple its prime minister - of course the leftists never bring up Obama's role in that.

ace, every bit of this has been, obviously, absurd from the get-go.

It's like Lyndon LaRouche's ravings about the Queen and the drug cartels were taken seriously. To the point the DOJ appoou inted a f***ing special counsel to "investigate" the nonsense.

And the pundits you rightly disdain are stupid. It's not about their "egos". And that would be no excuse. Why the universal default gymnastics to, effectively, distract and excuse people who demonstrate they don't think well? There's a bell curve, it's real. People who assert ridiculous things are not to be taken seriously. They're stupid.

Posted by: rhomboid at October 18, 2017 04:34 PM (QDnY+)

61 Here's the bottom line.

Russia tried to influence the election, of course they did. They've been trying for almost 100 years every election. So did Israel, Germany, England, France, Japan, China, and every other major nation on earth. They all want to influence the US election, because it affects them so significantly.

This is not new. It is not different. Its annoying, but inevitable.

The Democrats are trying to pretend this is some kind of anomaly, some new horror we must stop. Its ridiculous, and I'm convinced it all stems from the Obama administration realizing that they'd been illegally spying on Trump and were about to be caught with their pants down by the new administration, so they came up with this cover story.

Bernie Sanders could barely afford to put food on his family's table before he got into government. He and his social climbing wife now own what? Three nice houses?

According to the CBO, the 1% started at $347,000 pre tax in 2007. After tax that's $252,000. That's a damn healthy salary, but I don't see that as "three houses" salary. More likely one nice house, new cars every couple of years, and a nice vacation every year.

Sanders is most likely living a lifestyle that's beyond most entry-level 1%ers.

While admitting knowledge of perpetual industry harassment, the only name she names is Bill Clinton's, and only goes as far to say he "tested [her] feminist bona fides*" (is that what the kids are calling it these days?), but she still loved him, blahblah.

She pointed out Designing Women never got an Emmy for writing/directing/acting, though the series had a lot of socially conscious storylines (I always thought it was because the series was heavy-handed & overacted, but what do I know).

The line that chaps the most is at the end, where she waxes poetic about how any girl driving into town in some old car should be able to live her dreams without being groped. She could have said the same about "any girl" driving into D.C.

Drives me nuts. I don't understand why people do it. Although, I sorta get why people on phones only reference the post # they're replying to but when you're on a computer...If you can copy and paste the 'Posted by:...' line why can you not copy SOMETHING from that post?
If I had to choose, I'd rather have the actual comment than who posted it. Who posted it tells me zero about the comment...usually.
Posted by: Tami at October 18, 2017 04:51 PM (Enq6K)

Here's the thing though, the "posted by" inclusion at least tells someone "hey they're responding to me" rather than just some number you have no clue about. So that person knows you are directly responding to something they have said. Others can move on or scroll up to refresh. The number alone is almost useless.

And #168 should be ashamed for saying that.

168 My brother used to live next door to a guy with a German Shepard mix which got along very well with my brother's retriever. There was a chain link fence separating the yards, but they would leave a gate open so the dogs had twice the space to run around in while my brother and his neighbor were at work. One day the neighbor said, "OK, why did they decide that your backyard is the playroom and my backyard is the shitter?"

IIRC the AMA has a lobby that protects the "guild". Ie. there is some sort of federal law that limits the number of people who can become doctors every year. Just an arbitrary limit, nothing to do with aptitude.

One way to decrease price would be to remove this limit. Flood the market with doctors. I also hope that most of the functions of doctors can be automated in the future, which would also reduce costs.

I felt quite blessed watching that. Need better binoculars. There's a big-ass pond right outside the back of my little duplex condo. It was the hook that got me to buy the place. So green and purty. Lotta damn bugs, though, need to hit Lowe's or HD next for a big bottle of Home Defense. Not fond of insects, any of 'em.

The AMA doesn't represent the majority of physicians and is a leftist organization.

If you think what doctors make drives health care cost and that to the extent that they do adding more physicians would reduce costs then you don't really understand how any of this works.

BTW there isn't a law that limits the number of doctors directly.

Patient's don't really pay for it. If it was a free market you could make that argument, but medicine isn't a free market.

Fewer of the best and brightest are going into medicine because you can devote less time and effort in other endeavors that pay better over the long term and have a much better lifestyle.

280 Ignoramus: "There's no good reason why doctors need to get a full undergrad degree before going to Med School. As college has gotten more crazy expensive it adds to the crushing debt load, which patients in the end pay for."

Good point.

Med School ought to be like an apprenticeship. Medicine is so specialized that to train the mind in other disciplines is an exercise in diminishing returns. Just cut out the extraneous and get on with it because the amount of specialized knowledge required is almost overwhelming.

Those who might need the more classical ladder should probably be reserved for MD-PhD programs where clinical medicine is not the goal.

Of course automation and robotics are going to change the industry before anything else does, so this is all probably moot.

281 It's just silly to float the idea that the 25th Amendment is a viable way to get rid of Trump. VP Pence would have to be in on it, and its invocation for anything other than true mental defect will cause a constitutional crisis worse than the Civil War.

"Impeachment Because He's Trump" has a sliver of theoretical potential, because of swing GOPe members of Congress, but would also lead to a constitutional crisis.

sounds right ... I hung out with a bunch of perfusionists (and other med miscreants) and they got to choose their little crew. They had a good laugh about the doc that would open (and therefore ruin) a $2000 thing that wasn't really needed, on behalf of his buddy, for some extra bucks.

But perfusionists ... basically less skill than an auto mechanic ... watch for bubbles ... stop the bubbles. Maybe a little more than that sure, but because they chose their special people for their specialty, started at like $75K, 25 years ago.

AND they got to decide which vendor sold them expensive equipment. Their vendor was a great guy, sponsored their volleyball team I was on, threw a big booze party with the jungle juice coming out of the profusion machine. How cool is that ... of course we want to buy THAT guy's machine. Free Booze ... parties ... thanks guys like me that now must pay $12K/yr to fund all their scams, plus all the illegals, plus Blue Cross has to find Someone to gouge.

But I showed them, dropped my insurance, and am buying toys with that money. Obamacare guns, Obamacare Tiller, Obamacare beer equipment ... cheers
