It's a meme around here that cultural appropriation (an ignorant and stupid idea to begin with) goes both ways. Why is it perfectly okay for our Western culture to be appropriated, yet corn-rows and tacos and rap and sombreros are sacrosanct?

Stop driving, eating clean food, going to the doctor (Eastern Medicine is fine though) and using indoor plumbing and then get back to me.

Speaking of edumucation, for no particular reason yesterday I searched for info on the CA state univ. system (not the Univ. of CA system, the other, larger, less "prestigious" one). Specifically, thecurrent % of incoming freshmen who fail basic English and math capability as determined by placement tests.

Only number I saw was 40%. 40%. Savor thehighly extracted outrageousness of that, with its subtle undertones of insanity, and a bitter finish. Forty percent. This huge portion of the student body must take remedial classes - which don't count towards graduation, since, um, they are covering matter that is supposed to be learned K-12, BEFORE college. This is of course delays graduation. CSU's 4-year graduation % is 20% (% of students finishing in 4 years).

It gets better. Starting this school year, there will no longer be remedial classes. Haven't figured out the mumbo jumbo that purports to explain how unprepared students will somehow be "educated" at anything like a college level when they are NOT at college levels to start.

Gonna go WAAAAY out on a limb here, and speculate that what will be done is nothing, and what we have here is a massive, formal, official degradation of the value of a CSU degree, in one swoop. Just giving in to educational failure of the K-12 complex, a gigantic "social promotion" debacle.

Oh - in one of the linked articles recently, I learned that the "diversity" czar at UCLA makes $400K+ ...... words fail .....

The incident in which the two White women were forced to close their taco stand because it was racist or something came up.
Sitting nearby was a guy, clearly of Hispanic or Central American heritage, listening.
I said I wholeheartedly agreed with the concept of cultural appropriation and that Mexicans should henceforth have exclusive access to nachos, sombreros, and mariachi bands, and we will take airplanes, laptops and penicillin.
