Homer Boys in dory.jpg

Boys In A Dory
Winslow Homer

Some of Homer's work is incredibly detailed, and it is obvious that he used his skill as an illustrator and print-maker in many of his paintings. But this watercolor is a bit different than most of his work, and I love it!

I can hear the splash of the oars in the water and the whisper of the wind driving the schooner in the background and maybe one of the boys is whistling or singing softly to himself....

If suffering through the tone-deaf disaster that was the Dubya presidency should have taught the right anything, it is that you never let anything the Dem scum throw at you go unanswered, damn the "agenda."

You either fight back and call these nickelfuckers out as nickelfuckers every day, or let the Dems and MFM (BIRM) set the "agenda" for you.

114 I didn't know Homer did watercolors, so this was a surprise, a pleasant one. I don't know if this is true but it has the feel of a plein air painting. The figure rowing behind the dory is loose, too much water that let the paints bleed a bit. The sails, sky and background look to be done rapidly with little color blending, leaving a flat look. The dory is more detailed as are the boys in it, making it the focus of the painting. The subtle use of splatter adds to the watery theme.

I realize my reaction is subjective but I wonder if Homer used watercolor for its immediacy. The boys are starting out on an adventure without a sure end. As with any water travel every moment can vary. This is even greater because that dory is a lot of boat for such small boys to handle. That introduces an element of 'unsureness' or danger to the adventure, more than if they were on a hike. I especially like the wide-eyed look on the smallest boy in the oversized hat sitting just behind the prow.

People like Winslow Homer for the detail in his works, the technical proficiency on display, but his paintings leave me cold. I never feel anything when I look at Winslow Homer's paintings except admiration for his technical prowess.

But that's just me. Opinions differ.

***Umm - no. Trump merely stated that he liked to call the families of the fallen - whereas previous presidents usually used handwritten letters or (or, in the case of Obama, form letters with a pre-printed signature (you know, like a telemarketer). The MSM ginned up some made up controversy that misstated (or "lied", if you will) this into " Trump states that Obama never met with or did anything for any families of slain soldiers". Aaaah - no - he did not say that - but now that you mention it - Obama seemed to rely a lot on pre-printed form letters and really, for the most part, with only a few exceptions, did not meet with, call or write personal notes to the families of slain soldiers. Hence. the ridiculous twitter statement by disjointed lefties "How dare you say that Obama never met with the families of slain soldiers - that is a lie!!! How can you lie like that Here is the one picture of him with the family of a posthumous medal of honor winner!" "Eleventy!" Meanwhile - all the hundreds of families of those soldiers who died who got a form letter form Barry Soeto are seething. Perhaps some industrious MSM reporter might want to talk to those folks hmmm? ***crickets***
Thought so.
Trump should meet this head on and have a presser where he "makes up" for Obama's snubs by having ALL of those families over the White House, or, if they can't make it, he calls them personally over the next few months. heh. That would be great. I looked it up - its only about 2,000 families. Totally doable. Best press conference ever - opening up the people's house to the families of slain servicemen who only got a form letter. Cost to Trump - probably not than much. Watching lefty heads explode? Priceless.

But that's just me. Opinions differ."

I understand troyriser's opinion but I have a different reaction. Part of the appeal of Homer's works for me is they often elicit the senses of sound and scent, not just sight. Also, the images usually suggest a story which adds to my enjoyment.

The subjective nature of a painting's appeal is part of the fun of the art thread for me.

Not quite.
So Monday Trump gets challenged about the 4 Soldiers killed in Niger. He is vague and evasive, then in typical Trump fashion, has to insist that he does more than any President before him. So Tuesday he calls the widow of SGT Johnson and is a little awkward in what he says. And now apparently it is to the battle stations rather than letting it go.

It is ridiculous to imply that he does more than previous Presidents. Frankly Bush was the best. Genuine. Not a lot of fanfare. It is too early to say how Trump will truly do, but I do not have high expectations and he is much better when he sticks to scripts.

I agree. The left wants to make a spectacle of the dead when A Republican is president, but few flag draped coffins when it is Obama. But they love using gold star parents for their "make love not war" propaganda.

Beyond that, the Democrats belittle the man's service, not Trump. Because Democrats seem to hate our military as much as Obama did, as much as they hate the cops. Their new meme is all patriotism is racist, so praising the man's dedication for signing up to serve (patriotically) is a bad thing. To them America is the source of all evil, the Big Satan, if you will.

For most Americans, going in harm's way is honorable -- to the left it is deplorable. Because we should all lay down arms and open borders and fly our Che flags, but kneel for the anthem, and tear down all white man statues. sheesh What country do they love?

As someone else above said - Trump did not do this - the left did. And they did it by lying. AND they did it by lying at the expense of families of the fallen who were marginalized, at best, by the Obama administration if not downright disrespected. The response to this is to point out the hypocrisy and make sure families of the fallen are moves front and center and honored whenever possible - so they CANNOT be used, silenced or marginalized, by the left - which is precisely what the left wants - they want Trump to stop talking about fallen soldiers and how their families were mistreated by the Obama admin. Jeb! probably would have done that and the press would have been happy that they swept another embarrassment by a stupid lefty president under the rug - but, thank God, Trump is not that way - so he is walking up and smacking people around.

The response to these people is "I didn't say that at all - so that is a lie - but now that you mention it - the way Barry Soeto treated our fallen boys is a disgrace - form letters? You will never see form letters in MY administration. In fact - we are going to open the White House to all the families of the fallen who want to visit . Please arrange this through your local Congressman and we will open our doors to you . . any day."Boom.I did not suggest you were a #nevertrumper . . . . but . . . now that you mention it . . . you do sound concerned.

One bright spot is that I got about 3 1/4 pages of my new story for Kindle cranked out on Saturday last and I'm hoping to finish it this weekend. I know the whole plot and the ending - it's the writing itself that's the problem.

Lefty Santa Barbara loves their Summer Solstice Parade, which sometimes pushes the envelope a bit. Back in the mid-90s, there was one float with an S and M theme.....studded leather, whips, and a painted but naked woman walking out front. Middle aged, a little fluffy. Tall, like amazonian tall. The float was organized by her and her husband/boyfriend, who was pushing 60 yrs old, but had gauged ears and facial piercings (he used to frequent the same restaurant I did, used to see him all the time).

Much handwringing, pearl-clutching and caterwauling about nudity in the parade from the local leftists.

Within a few months, the couple got busted. Seems that they were running a long-time brothel in town that everyone totes didn't know about. Totes didn't know.

390 Worst street name I ever saw was in Louisiana somewhere:

"Old Trash Heap Road."

I'd love to advertise a house for sale on that one. Locally, we have Smuts Road, which is bad enough (named for a family that used to own the land)

My favorite is a road south of my town, outside city limits, kind of an important thoroughfare, named "That Road". How did you know you had gotten to "That Road"? Well, it was the one that didn't have any signs on it. Anywhere.

It was always fun to either follow or give directions to someone about it - "well you just go down south a town a bit til you get to That Road, and you'll know it because it ain't got no sign. So turn there. But be careful and don't turn on some other road, cuz you'll get lost, just be sure and turn on That Road."

The Victorians were pretty freaky themselves, when they wanted to be. Victoria herself, when told she must not have any more children, lamented to her doctor, "Can I have no more fun in bed?"

And the book When Passion Reigned is a good, if scholarly, take on Victorian-era sexuality.

============

I long ago realized that writing is work. Waiting for "inspiration" is a fool's errand.

The only time that I feel that I'm anywhere close to pure creation is in the pre-writing phase where I'm developing characters, doing multiple outlines, and generally figuring out where the story goes.

After that, it's just work. Sit down and write. Get that first draft done. It's going to be shit, but that's what second drafts are for. The second draft is going to be less shit but still need work, that's what third drafts are for.

You're probably right.

Our government has our best interest in mind, and the FBI is, and has always been above reproach.

The smart and honest men and women of the FBI are doing what they have to do to keep us safe, and we should trust every single thing they say.

Honestly, I'm not very smart, so it's hard for me to understand why timelines keep being drastically changed and why a witness would go missing for a number of days, but the government knows best, so all we can do is give them our blind trust.

Also... I'm female, so my reasoning abilities are limited as well.

So I guess Sessions is not an honorable man, because when he had a (tiny) conflict on the Russia thing, he rushed to recuse himself and put the whole matter in the hands of the Swamp, which rushed to put in the most conflicted man they could find, that was also involved.

But Rosenstein gets to decide for himself to NOT recuse, because he is so honorable that even if he committed criminal/treasonous acts, he could investigate himself, no problem.

sheesh. Sessions sounds like he is owned by the Swamp.

My two cents on SD caliber.

Using quality, proven, modern self defense designed rounds..... there is not much performance difference between calibers. There is no such thing as "knockdown power" pertaining to handguns.

That being said. I prefer to carry as much ammo as I can comfortably conceal. I love the 45 ACP.... but I want more than 5 or 7 rounds. My MINIMUM carry number is 10. 13-15-17 is better.

My choice for conceal carry puts me into double stack 9mm firearms.

Like I said. My personal opinion.

YMMV.

524 I'm tardy to the party this morning on this thread, and I'm a total lurker, but I wanted to say how much I love the "morning art thread". I know nothing at all about fancy art and I look forward to it every morning!

Autumn is in full swing, but as I reside in S. TX we are just staring to feel it, mostly in the mornings. This time of year seems to bring out the hardcore America love in me and I tend to pull out my old copies of Coopers works, The Scarlet Letter, The Crucible (all of which I admit I just skim these days), and my absolute favorite novel since about the 5th grade, The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

I wondered if the artsy person in charge could post some works that are reminiscent of Colonial America, works that remind us where we come from and why we continue to love this land unapologetically.

Sorry, I caught the feelz this morning I guess.
Really really love the mini art history lessons in the mornings!

525 and my absolute favorite novel since about the 5th grade, The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

That is a great book. Read it many times myself-even as an adult. She also wrote another good historical novel, "Calico Captive" which takes place in the 1700s . Have you read that?

527 Fenelon, no I have not, but I just right now bought it on Amazon. Thanks for the recommendation!

I'm in my 40s and i still read The Witch once a year around Halloween/Thanksgiving. And I still use the same tattered paperback copy I got way back then!

Just this weekend i lent it to my 11 yr old stepdaughter and she texted me that she's hooked. Made my day!

528 See, a very bland color palette of an outdoor, river side painting!

That's great; I still have the same tattered copy I read
years ago too, and I'm glad your stepdaughter likes it. You'll have to tell me what you think of Calico Captive.
