Credit Suisse Forecasters Reduce CBS' Earnings Outlook by 5%, Due to Poor NFL Ratings

CBS earnings to disappoint due to weak NFL ratings, Credit Suisse says

Declining NFL television ratings will lower CBS earnings, according to Credit Suisse.

The firm cut its third-quarter EPS estimates by 5 percent, citing CBS' softer Sunday NFL ratings. The media company reports on Nov. 2.

"We expect third-quarter network advertising to decline 3 percent (previously +1 percent), driven by soft ratings for both the summer schedule and for the start of the NFL season," wrote Credit Suisse analyst Omar Sheikh. "With only one of the three content licensing deals we expected for the second half announced in third quarter, we also expect content licensing revenue growth to be skewed to the fourth quarter."

Thanks to Arthur K.

And now, a near-forgotten early 80s song with a sneakily apropos title.

Sorry: I should have combined this with my last piece about MNF ratings. I'll make them both short-timer posts.

14 Willowed, but this is what I was talking about:

301 I've thought lately that the NFL boycott has peaked. It may hold or decline from here, no way to tell. Some decline in the boycott is reasonable to expect.

Most NFL fans are willing to ignore being insulted or don't feel insulted by the players and league's actions.
Posted by: Meremortal, with hand over heart at October 17, 2017 03:44 PM (3myMJ)

============

The thing is, the financial effect is just beginning to manifest itself. There are contracts and financial commitments that the league literally cannot meet with support at its currently depressed level.

Without a sudden reversal, even staying where support current is, the NFL could be hurting very very badly for years to come. Think of ESPN's television contracts as an example.

The purpose to the Left's Sexual Politics is to make it such a minefield that society can no longer function.

Everything becomes so dumbed-down that anything and everything is an offense.

Just be glad that this is all going blue-on-blue, because the Left is so primed for conflagration that it will hopefully burn itself to the ground.

I believe Mr. Wolf's advice regarding certain intramural pleasuring activities applies in this case. Pain, but wouldn't be surprised if it is minor and sustainable - as Meremortal has pointed out, way too many NFL fans who don't care (they'd watch/support "muh team" even if they performed half-time human sacrifice, or put all profits towards ISIS).

One thing my limited reading has not seen discussed, which I hope is under consideration: pulling DOD advertizing, and DOD/military support to NFL events. It's really inexcusable to have taxpayer money (or equipment/personnel/prestige, if the league were to pony up $$$) supporting an outfit that is so degraded, racist, and alien that it cannot continue a near-century-old, simple, uncontroversial tradition.

Military recruiting ads, color guards, and jet flyovers have *no* place at anything connected to the NFL.

Most recent episode hinges around one character changing his mind and doing something dangerous to get the ship from one place to another. He nearly dies in the process.

You'd think that he'd be the focus of that episode.

But he's not. He's still a side character.

Every episode HAS to revolve around Michael Burnam, the supposed main character, even though she hasn't changed since the end of the pilot and had very little to do in this episode except expound condescendingly on other's moral failings. Which, is really just the point of the show now.

How is this not amazing?!?!

I give him credit for being honest now, when most Hollywood is STILL lying about it.

If we're going to be honest, who among us would have had the strength of will to do any different than he did? He was a poor, struggling writer, and then, almost overnight, had the gates to wealth and fame opened to him like magic, by Harvey - and all he had to do was ignore some stories to keep the money coming in. Like he says, when you're nobody, do you turn down a seat at the table with Vice President Gore just because the guy giving you an invite is a bit dodgy?

Something else to consider -- is not all revenue is created equally. A dollar of tickets sales may equal .05 of profit. While a dollar of merchandise sale may generate .85 of profit. Especially if said merchandise is made in China with employees working 20 hours a day, 7 days a week.

281 For some reason I can't access the comments on the "Salon's Favorite Conservative Twitters" but I am wondering when we're going to get over this cult of youth that allows 28-year-olds or 35-year-olds to opine as experts on all things on enormous international platforms. It's pertinent to this thread too, because CBS and the rest of the dying legacy media drives the NFL's narrative, and they've driven it off a cliff.

I've had two very different careers. So far, I've been very good in both of them, at least in my weight class. And with that relative confidence acknowledged, I'm good enough to know that I should not be the guy on TV stations alleging to be The World's Foremost Expert. I plan to be The World's Foremost Expert a ways out, in my 50s after I've got a couple dozen years in one or both endeavors. But that takes a lot of time, and there are no shortcuts. You should not and cannot be "The Guy" or "The Girl" in your 20s or 30s, and TV's insistence on advancing these airheads as the enlightened ones is only hurting them.

And Kimmel, headed into his 50s here soon, will never be an expert in anything. He never finished college and while I'm sure he's a street smart media man who knows how to get himself paid nothing in his CV suggests the remotest possibility of anything approaching technical competence in even one discipline.

My data is dated but I believe the WSJ weathered the ongoing media recession better than almost anyone else based on circulation. While the op ed pages entertain inconsistent kooks, outside that I believe the people writing in the WSJ generally have some remote notion of what the heck they're talking about. You'd think other media channels would get a clue but they just double and triple down on know-nothings with drive-by hot-takes.

And so, down the toilet. Keep it up.

284 It's not just the NFL - the fall season's network TV ratings are very "soft" compared to last year, with even "hit" shows off by almost 10% from last year.

And the late night TV show ratings aren't good either... Jay Leno was averaging 6 million a night less than four years ago, and the ratings for ALL THREE late night shows, combined, are... less than 8 million.

The networks need to get used to this, "the new normal"...

If Republicans would support/pass unbundling and Ala carte cable TV packages, then they could REALLY hurt Hollywood. So of course they won't.

Of course you don't, especially not in an industry that depends on connections.
Posted by: Tom Servo at October 17, 2017 04:25 PM (k1TUh)

It's not just Hollywood. Everybody knew about BJ Clinton--they had a team in place to deal with Bimbo Eruptions, but, BJ gave them P-O-W-E-R and there was no way they didn't want a seat at that table. He is still their go to guy, having been elevated to Elder Statesman status, so they can use his charm to get access to this or that. No one who wrote big honking checks to Hillary wrote them because of her, even when she was SoS/Senator/whatever, no it was because of him. Same thing for Chelz--let's pretend we like her because she's Daddy's Darling.

Same deal Bobo/Mooch. He's a creepy muslim sympathizer with no ethics or brains, but, damn, he's charming. No one likes or wants Mooch around, but, it's a package deal. As for the O spawn, I think they are going to have a tougher time of it--they will still have lots of opportunities and big jobs given to them, but, I think political power will elude them--Chelz is very unattractive, but, Malia has Mommy's Resting Bitch Face and I think Sasha has issues because she is kept way way way under wraps.

Judicial coup status:
[X] Intact
[ ] Other than intact

Hasn't changed a bit, since the outset.

Everything done by the administration is clearly within const. and statutory authority of the executive - no argument even possible. None of the parties can conceivably have standing (a duly enacted and lawful policy does not allow for "standing" by anyone, otherwise every policy of govt. could be stopped on the same basis).

Administration did not force a resolution of this the first time - didn't even try to expedite things.

And impeachment is not a remedy (because it won't happen, isn't practical for "solving the problem", as would involved dozens or hundreds of impeachments).

The lazy expedient of "judicial supremacy" - never constitutional or sensible, and obviously so - has reached its reductio ad absurdum, with wholesale usurpation of executive functions by courts.

So according to Behar, as long as your sympathies are in the right place, it's ok to hold up severed heads and straight up lie to people and to do the bait and switch - political commentary instead of comedy.

What if I think you're on the wrong side of things? Is it appropriate to ask you to articulate your views, evaluate them, and then decide to attack comedians? These idiots cannot distinguish between moral principles (which are always true) and government policies (which are not the same thing, and often corrupt and stupidly implemented, and not the only possible solution).
