Jimmy Kimmel on Republicans Who No Longer Watch His Show: It's Not "Good Riddance, But Riddance"

Actually, this shouldn't be oversold too much -- he's not exactly saying he's happy to lose Republican viewers, but he does say he'd do it all over again "in a heartbeat" and also says he wouldn't even want to "have a conversation" with anyone bothered by his leftwing politicking:

"I don't say I don't mind," Kimmel said. "I want everyone with a television to watch the show, but if they're so turned off by my opinion on health care and gun violence, then... I probably wouldn't want to have a conversation with them anyway."

"Good riddance?" Smith asked.

"Well, not good riddance, but riddance," Kimmel said, laughing.

By the way, maybe worth a listen if you care about such things, but social psychologist Aydin Paladin (not her real name, because she's a conservative in academics) has an interesting YouTube essay about late night comics' attempt to spread an "emotional contagion" (of anti-Trump hysteria) for propaganda purposes.

She herself says that much of what she says (indeed, most of social psychology itself) is of a "No shit?" nature, in as much as it tells you, with rigorous definitions and survey evidence, what you already pretty much knew, but I think some of you may find it interesting to know why this sort of "emotional contagion" propaganda works.

Long story short: Someone (an entertainer, for example) creates goodwill in an audience and then uses ridicule or crying on camera to create an emotional response in the audience towards a target person or idea. Because people don't like the idea that any idea in their brains was inserted into their brains by someone else -- they don't like the idea of being manipulated or influenced by a third party-- people assume the contempt or anger they feel towards the target person or idea originated entirely within themselves, and is therefore their own belief.

Kind of like the idea of Inception -- the trick is not suggesting an idea to someone, which is easy (just speak the idea to them), but of making the person think they thought of that idea themselves, so they take pride of authorship in it.

There are limits to the effectiveness of this, of course. People only feel goodwill to the late night clowns because the clowns make them laugh (and making someone laugh is a good way to earn goodwill), and as they shift their priority from making people laugh to just straight-up political advertising, they loose the goodwill that makes their emotionally-based propaganda effective in the first place.

Also once someone realizes they're being "injected" with someone else's beliefs (and can no longer fool themselves into thinking they are solely responsible for those beliefs), people tend to react hostilely to the propaganda, and the "boomerang effect" actually pushes them in the exact opposite direction. She talks about that effect, called "reactance" (rebellion against attempts to control you) here.

90 Of course, this sort of thing goes the other way too.

Not being critical, but Ace, you get that effect here. There's a buy-in that already exists, and those of us who have bought in, we're more inclined to agree with you.

That's just how it goes.

Yeah, this is one of those "duh" things. Like when you meet a pretty girl, and she says she really likes french cinema. Well, you're more inclined to like it, even though you know nothing of it, until you go see a french film. Then you're like "wow, where has this been all my life. I love it!"

But do you?

Do you reaaaaallllly?

So yeah, that's the simple point: If you want someone to go along with your idea (and think it was their own, sort of), get them to like you first.

Easy peasy.

Yeah it's manipulation. Crazy ex - types have turned it into a science.

Gaslighting, hypocrisy and flat out lies.

If they can get you to question your own morality, convictions or even sanity, they have won.

168 Its almost the definition of an entertainer's job to use emotional manipulation to gain a specific response. Romances, thrillers, horror, etc; the entire point of film, TV, and so on is to get you to respond a certain way and enjoy it. So that these guys are good at it, shouldn't surprise anyone.

People familiar with alcoholics, for example, know very well how one can learn to be incredibly manipulative. They can make you feel like their wrongdoing is your failure, allowing them to be selfish and childish without any hindrances like conscience. and they tend to be so charming and likable that when you snap and attack them, you look like the unstable jerk.

Hollywood is full of these kind of charming manipulative people. Its what they do for a living. Don't be surprised it works... it works on you too. That's why you enjoy movies and music and TV and so on.

169 The Left has inserted itself in every area where America with it's vast cultural differences (in relation to everywhere else on earth) is suppose to have a chance to come together and forget their differences.

Add to that--they've insisted upon America in areas where America goes to "escape" their daily troubles--movies, football, later night comedy.

It tears at the very fabric and threads that hold America together--that's why it is so particularly egregious.

Mark, still don't buy/get it.

Logic filters cannot be bypassed, if they're working to begin with. Introspection is not needed, just some critical thinking and knowledge.

Like I said about Kimmel, and would apply to family/friends et al being referred to here by others - no more understanding of a serious topic than a hamster has. Period. Revealed by the very first question posed to them on said topic. Emotion is irrelevant. Manipulation is only possible if you're being lazy, or are ignorant, stupid (incapable of critical thought), or perhaps have low native intelligence.

I both agree and disagree. Humans are emotional animals. That we can react logically is one of the things that makes us human.

This is kind of like (not the same, but on the same level) as beating up a guy who loves his wife, but she is objectively a shrew. He loves her. He is not thinking rationally, because his emotion bypasses his logical thought process.

Hollywood preys on the idea that people are social animals, therefore stars who play characters on tv evoke emotional, almost familial responses in people- especially when they are likable.

Suppose it's not a musician. Suppose you're 18 years old, and some dude who is a real perfesser, with Doctor in his name, stands in front of a lecture hall and everything... suppose that fella, when you get in his office, he listens to you. Smiles and nods at your prattling.

We do not give a shit about who they really are, we just want them to be the character they appear to be.

This is also the basis for why the political 'sucker punch' in movies or tv are so hated. It allows you to see the man behind the curtain is nothing more than a fat doddering, old guy, and not the great and powerful OZ.

Agreed that this is in fact a Big F*cking Deal, and had it happened under TFG (fat chance) it would have been News Of The Week.

But it's another piece of draining the swamp, and a big one. Sue and settle was a gubmint cheese money train for enviro groups and their wolf packs of lawyers. Now for the other Departments to follow suit. DOJ has ended the 'trick' of forcing sued entities to 'donate' cash to left wing institutions as well.

Well, like I said, people who are influenced or manipulated (on some real-world topic, not stupid fictional crap) by entertainers are effectively stupid, ignorant, and/or lazy. Semantics, off-point observations, and sensitivities about relatives and friends notwithstanding.

Posted by: rhomboid at October 16, 2017 08:23 PM (QDnY+)

Fair enough. You come across as a very logic-based person, so you may not be as susceptible. But a lot of folks are more emotional. They want to be liked, to be on the 'good' side. They want to agree with people that they like.

Posted by: bluebell at October 16, 2017 08:42 PM (UoSKV)

250 The thing is, hollywood, TV, musicians, social media etc recognized last year that they were on the way down and the right was rising like a phoenix. Culturally, we were the trend and they were losers. People liked the happy, successful, fun side of the right. They didn't care for the left's continual whining, radicalism, insults, and violence.

So they are trying to grab that momentum and cultural dominance back, even if it takes a total blackout on any right leaning influences. Hence, GoFundMe denying right-leaning causes. Youtube restricting and banning right-leaning materials. Sites refusing right-leaning ads. Entertainers saying "no right wingers!" and going in deep on straight up screaming left wingism.

The theory is to deny air, to give only one side, to not be balanced, because balance means they lose ground. Will it work?

I kinda doubt it, unless they get a lot less evangelistic and get a lot more entertaining about it. They've turned into Jack Chick and while the guy's stuff is kinda fun to laugh at, it didn't convince anyone.

Fisher hand delivered a cow tongue in a box with the note, "If you ever touch Heather again, or any other woman, the delivery will be something of yours, much smaller, in a box."

271 I, too, stopped watching late night TV when Johnny Carson retired. I stopped watching TV news after the Katrina coverage in which CNN made up stories or reported rumors as truth (I was trained as a journalist at (don't laugh because back then it was the real thing), Mizzou, and am disgusted with what it has become. I have on the wall about one foot from my left shoulder a nice Sony flat screen TV that is connected with cable (provided as part of the package) and the last time it was turned on was last November when I was waiting for Hillary! to concede (this is an absolutely true statement). I last watched TV sitcoms when Cheers was still running. I last watched Jimmy Kibble when he was the dork that asked the questions on the Win Ben Stein's Money show, where Stein was the whole deal.

Do I miss any of it? Jeebus no! It is all double dog bullshit and I get my news from AOSHQ and other sources. Plus I read a lot of stuff (yes, read, as most of the younger crowd with attention spans measured in microseconds apparently can no longer do).

Minor rant off.

well there is a point there, but most middle class people live in a world where they work hard, have a lot of "culture" thrust upon them, and struggle to take care of the kids and house and chores ... and barely have time to consider these deeper "counter-culture" thangs.

I know smart people, successful careers, Christian conservative at heart ... but so often clueless about the Ace of Spades counter-narrative. Especially the coastal culture folks, that are submersed in leftist money/power/lies in so many cultural venues. The road to the "red-pill" is not easy.

I think the Soviets engineered their infiltration, and we should not assume their massive success at marching through our institutions was just happenstance. They invaded and are entrenched ... and most of US don't even recognize that. PC is everywhere ... "red-pill" is actually a long process, not a one time event.

BUT .. "we" are right, so we got THAT going for us.

Not so much. When you decide to dis your employer by making a big political stink, you've pretty much distanced yourself from any of the decent employees.

Were the others to speak up, they would just get dragged into the mess.

You allow such a person enough rope to hang himself--you don't make another, louder stink to cover up the first.

It is the employer that isn't standing up to these pinheads. Not really the ther employees' issue.

see, I wouldnt describe NFL players this way. it is just competitive sports in the end and there are rules. when the players become brutish thugs they are punished.

the problem with the NFL today is that the owners have allowed the players to become thugs, which means they have rewarded them for thuggery.

Yeah, agreed, don't expect NFL players to be men, or stand up for themselves or what's right, definitely not in their wheelhouse. Just another part of society where ..... it's haaaaaaaard to stand up to stupid racists and authoritarians.

Meanwhile, on that topic, NFL is going to sponsor a social activism "boot camp" (according to ESJWPN report linked at Gateway Pundit, which as earlier discussed is useful mostly asa quick glance headline aggregator). AND the NFL will back a "criminal justice reform" bill.

Not kidding.

Of course, you can't really expect NFL owners to stand up to this idiocy, or actually even to stop pushing it. It would be haaaaaaaard.

Maybe the NFL can move to Europe? They seem to be European, in the worst sense, already.

My mother fell and broke her toe, well more of her foot -- the tarsals. She fell in her kitchen, and caught her foot under the refrigerator -- you know that removable grill thing. That caught it and twisted it.

She had to have surgery to put some screws in it.

Her balance was getting pretty bad, and they had some physical therapist come out and work with her for a couple of months. I was skeptical, but damn if they didn't get her balance improved.

She was in the "high risk" range for falling, and they got her down to "low risk", well the top of the low risk range.

I'll be The Beast has a real balance problem herself.

But that is some fundamental stuff ... to how the leftist invasion has occurred.

But it lines up with my theories from another place 35 years ago, with books like "4 arguments for the elimination of television", and the basic belief we were being infiltrated by globalist/communist/enemy powers. So now we are back at that point ... but "they" are much deeper in our culture. Not just "things change", but "they implemented their plan".

This ain't your night"! My night! I coulda taken Wilson apart! So what happens? He gets the title shot outdoors on the ballpark and what do I get? A one-way ticket to Palooka-ville! You was my brother, Charley, you shoulda looked out for me a little bit. You shoulda taken care of me just a little bit so I wouldn't have to take them dives for the short-end money.

Yahoo has been hyperventilating about that since yesterday. They also had a story that the 49ers getting rid of him was a mistake. Yahoo must have a picture of Crapperdick on the wall right next to Che

When the NFL evolves to its rightful and intend place as the Social Justice Football League, I propose that renaming commence -

AFC => Che Guevera Conference
AFC East => Aaron Hernandez Division
AFC North => Ray Lewis Division
AFC South => Sheila Jackson-Lee Division
AFC West => Cesar Chavez Division

NFC => Mumia Abu-Jumal Conference
NFC East => Stonewall Riots Division
NFC North => Barack Obama Division
NFC South => Trayvon Martin Division
NFC West => Colin Kapernick Division

533 >> See, "Property of da beatch in chief!" that shit's
>> mine.

That may not be too far off the mark. I was reading something Hillary and Huma. Hillary was at the house of one of her gals pals and several other biddies were there.

According to that, at one time Hillary did some sort of "ownership display" with Huma. Petting her creepily, showing the other gals that Huma was hers. Her little pet.

534 if whites become targets on the field, as happened with Oakland's team (where they do apparently pay the players to be thugs), then they will have to leave. they will have to say something at least. survival comes first.

Well, if they are having Social Justice camps this summer, isn't that where they teach about white supremacy and how they are responsible for all the bad, and that blacks are basically still slaves? B/c that's gonna be great for the teams.

And the NFL is sponsoring a justice reform bill? Wtf? What does it say? Release all blacks b/c they have been wrongly incarcerated b/c of the color of their skin? Sounds ridiculous, but so is the whole country. Man, it was such a good day, but now I'm all bummed. Fvckin NFL & SJWs & stupid people. Ruinin' my life.

536 Hopefully this blowout will erase any jitters or cult of Yankee Stadium post season mystique out of the equation for Astros. Put it out of your mind and TCOB next game.

Would be nice to see them stretch Yankees bullpen a bit, though.

549 "Long story short: Someone (an entertainer, for example) creates goodwill
in an audience and then uses ridicule or crying on camera to create an
emotional response in the audience towards a target person or idea.
Because people don't like the idea that any idea in their brains was
inserted into their brains by someone else -- they don't like the idea
of being manipulated or influenced by a third party-- people assume the
contempt or anger they feel towards the target person or idea originated
entirely within themselves, and is therefore their own belief."

Incidentally, this is also a large part of why so many of the fake GOP presidential candidates thought attacking Trump's supporters, calling them "low-info" or "star-struck" or "racists" would be an effective means of stopping the Trump candidacy. They thought, "I have conservative street cred, so the rubes who vote for me will heed my words and bend to my will."

They also thought, because they live and die by public opinion and can't imagine people not caring about such a thing, "This line of attack would totally work on me and make me abandon my favored candidate if it were used against me. Imagine! The 'cool kids' calling me dumb? I'd be backpedaling so hard, I'd break a toe!"
