At about 7AM ET this morning, researchers revealed details of a new exploit called KRACK that takes advantage of vulnerabilities in Wi-Fi security to let attackers eavesdrop on traffic between computers and wireless access points. The exploit, as first reported by Ars Technica, takes advantage of several key management vulnerabilities in the WPA2 security protocol, the popular authentication scheme used to protect personal and enterprise Wi-Fi networks. “If your device supports Wi-Fi, it is most likely affected,” say researchers. So yeah, this is bad. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. It seems that House minority leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has handpicked the man who will replace her as leader of the leftwing caucus, and she’s chosen one of her more divisive colleagues to take her place. Pelosi told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos that she had already chosen Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA) to take her place as the face of the Democrat minority in the House. This should be interesting to watch. Sander said that while this seems like a topic that should receive more attention, academia tends to sweep the information under the rug or try to discredit it. He cited a situation stemming from his own campus as an example. “Michael Schill (the former dean of the UCLA Law School) told me privately that he thought it was a breakthrough study,” Sander said. But after it was published, Sander said that Schill sent an email to the student body suggesting “there are those of us who seriously question the credibility of this research.” I’m a Muslim, and a civil rights lawyer with a special interest in advocating for women’s rights. My advocacy is informed not just by the law, but by strategies detailed in Islamic teachings and Prophet Muhammad’s example to pre-empt sexual abuse. Yes, the cancer of sexual abuse against women that we see in Christian majority America is just as prevalent in Muslim majority Pakistan, but also in Hindu majority India and state atheist China. This proves that men worldwide are failing in our responsibility to end sexual abuse and gender based violence. The massacre in Las Vegas caught a lot of people off-guard. No one foresaw anything of the kind happening in Sin City. However, it does appear to have been enough to prompt at least one lawsuit for an unimplemented law passed via ballot initiative in Nevada. How is he able to pony up such money? Unlike Hugh Hefner, diversity. But how does he pay for it all? Many were shocked last month when Flynt’s peer, Hugh Hefner, died at age 91 with what may have been as little as $15 million in assets. That was in part because the rise of internet pornography gutted Hefner’s Playboy empire, and one might think Flynt had been battered by the same storm. But when he was considering taking the company public in 2014, the now 74-year-old Flynt told USA Today that the privately-held Larry Flynt Publications was worth more than $500 million. That’s plausible because, while Hustler’s print circulation, like Playboy’s, was decimated by digital disruption, Flynt has aggressively diversified into a sprawling empire. His businesses now include video porn production, brand licensing, real estate, and even a casino. He told Forbes in 2014 that publishing accounted for less than 5% of his company’s revenue. Regarding the WPA2 hack...
A lot of big companies (including my current employer) have their employees' laptops default to wireless even if the laptop is currently plugged into the network. The employee has to manually turn off the wireless in order to use the (superior) wired connection. This is to avoid potential issues with clueless employees. Unfortunately, it also means that most major corporations are probably a potential gold mine for anyone who can figure out how to use this hack on their premises. Regarding Adam Schiff - IIRC, Schiff's in the next district over from where I live. The last time I remember hearing about him in the news was when he engaged in a bit of hypocrisy about one of his fellow congress critters early this year. Worst case: you drill a row of holes before finding it, The base plate of that contilever mount will hide your misses, until it's taken down in future. And small drilled holes are one hell of lot easier to fix with spackle than a whole section of board pulled away. Not exactly. Kind words, of exactly the right type, administered in exactly the right way, and the right time can sometimes accomplish a great deal. Wrongly applied, those kind words are worthless and counterproductive. Wisdom is knowing which kind words apply and when to use them. Wisdom is not common. And now, to read the commentary. Well, I was just talking with one of my mother's friends (asking about everybody) -- she and one of her sons and his wife paid $250 (a pop, I think) for a VIP thingy at Trump's speech up in Greenville today. She said it was just awful and someone needs to get fired. There was no parking, and in the "VIP" area, they were stacked like sardines. There was supposed to be food, but it was all gone by the time they got to it. That's not Trump's mess, but the local Republican party fuck up, and someone indeed ought to be fired. Most Docs I've spoken with tell me antibiotics are way, way over prescribed. But it does seem a bit crazy. If you go right in the minute you feel pretty bad, it's take some otc pain meds and call us if things don't
shape up in a couple of weeks. But if you grind it out, I swear the infections can dig in incredibly deep. And it's not like you can just pop in at the Docs for a quick impromptu look see, especially if you're dealing with a specialist. And with Obamacare premiums and deductibles so sacked out, it isn't like spending even more for concierge service is real appealing. Posted by: RM at October 16, 2017 10:32 PM (eP+dt) 208

What a day! Best friend out of town for four weeks for shoulder surgery. We had already planned to share 100 lbs of shrimp so I volunteered to put his up in his freezer. Got his share packed in containers and ready to freeze. When I got to his house and opened the garage door I was greeted by the smell of a failed freezer. Apparently the breaker had tripped when both the air compressor and freezer started at the same time. Shrimp from last year, flounder, cobia, strawberries all swimming in three inches of putrid water. Took most of the rest of the day to get everything cleaned up. Now when I eat anything and try to swallow, the smell from that freezer comes back.

114 Let me ask ya'll a question. Are antibiotics some kind of class 9 restricted substance and I've just never heard of it? I went to the dentist and said "Look, I've got an infected tooth and the infection has spread to my sinuses, but I can't afford to have any work done on the tooth right now. All I want is an antibiotic to stop the infection and then I can come back in 4 weeks to have the tooth taken care of once I get my bonus check."
But nooooooo. Gotta have X-rays $$ and an office visit $$$ and yadda yadda yadda. So now I'm just stuck with sweating it out. Posted by: AshevilleRobert at October 16, 2017 10:16 PM (w+Jhj) ++++ Liability. If the dentist gives you a script and sends you on your way with your infected tooth and sinuses and whatever else, then the dentist is on the hook if bad things happen to you as a result of his substandard treatment. Sure, now you say you will take responsibility, but if the infection spreads to your brain or heart or whatever and you die, your family might sue the piss out of him. Not worth the risk to him. First, they're just cool. I bought some really small ones and you'd be surprised at the applications. Make fridge magnets out of unusual coins. Replace a broken mechanical latch with a magnetic one. I fixed a droopy cover on the bathroom exhaust fan. Mainly they're just fun to mess with. Posted by: Cloyd Freud, Unemployed at October 16, 2017 11:07 PM (398bZ) 369

my late BIL used to employ a engineer - Chinese -born raised here- who was brilliant but had little in the way of common sense. once my BIL offered him the use of my BILs cabin up north. The guy found nothing nothing to eat in the fridge except a package of moldy old hot dogs and he was so hungry he ate them without cooking them. A half hour later he called my BIL saying "I'm dying..I'm puking my guts out.."

Electromagnets. If you're talking permanent magnet motors, they do use some pretty doggone powerful ones. "AlNiCo" is one common type, an alloy of Aluminum, Nickel, and Cobalt. Makes very strong permanent magnet. I've rebuilt a some dinky little PM motors where the field was so strong, I could hardly get the armature out or back in without it sticking hard to the field. Another tl/dr. This time on Vegas.
In the Las Vegas shooting the constantly changing timeline is a problem. They are speaking to us, the public, as if their information sources are just handwritten log entries, VHS tape, and the recollections of witnesses but every piece of information that the police/FBI has is also in digital form. Every time a door is opened, a car goes in or out, there is a timestamped entry on a hard-drive and a backup. Cameras everywhere feed video to hard-drives. Every radio call there is audio timestamped on a hard-drive. Every cell phone call there is a time stamp on a hard-drive. Every cell phone video collected, and wiped by the police/FBI before the phones were returned, is timestamped by the phone. Within an hour or two by going over these digital records and the witness statements a good hard timeline should have been assembled. Now if they were still looking for other suspects then I could see them doing a "no comment" and they didn't say much for days. On October 4th they dropped a timeline. Then days later changed it - a lot. Then on the 13th changed it again sorta back to where it was but still with oddities. One big one is that there are now statements about checking on the security door where both maintenance worker Schuck and security man Campos are switched in the role of who went to first to check the door from the stairwell side and found it stuck closed and then went back down the stairs and up another way to the 32nd floor to check the door from the hall side. Schuck stated he did that and now the LVPD is saying Campos did it. Also the audio of radio calls from Schuck, Campos? and the security office seem to say that Schuck was fired on while approaching the stairwell door and that Campos, where ever he was didn't know where Schuck was at that time. Pictures in the Daily Mail show a meal cart just a few feet down the hallway. Another picture of officers walking away from the crime scene down the same hallway. Neither picture shows any bullet damage. 200 rounds would do a lot of damage. On the audio of the radio call with Schuck, Campos, and the security office at the start 5 gunshots are heard. Another Daily Mail picture of the double door which was shot through shows around 10 holes. Some more could be hidden but not 190 more. And now Campos has disappeared. He left a meeting with the union people just before his first interview and went to a clinic, it's reported, and then vanished. This whole mess is like a suspect that keeps changing his story to fit facts that the police show him they have. It smells. Of what I don't know. They are claiming incompetence but the smell is of something worse. Transcript of audio of radio call. {Gunfire} {five rapid shots heard as radio comes on.} Schuck: "Call the police, someone's fired a gun up here." "Someone's firing a rifle on the 32nd floor - down the hallway" Campos: "Copy, Hey, He's on 32!" "Stephen, get out of the way ." Security center: "Be safe." Campos: "Stephen make sure you're out of the way." Schuck: "Copy." Security center: "Base to 106, Stephen. Security wants to know if you know a room." Schuck: "It's at the end ofthe hallway, uh, I can't ten you what room. It looked like he fired down the hallway when I got close to the door." Security center: "Copy, so it's down the 100 hallway, correct?" Schuck: "Security's up here." Campos: "Stephen, where you at?" Schuck: "100 hallway, don't go, uh ... " Posted by: geoffb at October 16, 2017 11:19 PM (zOpu5) 434

Parent's married before he was conceived (and still married to this day), upper-middle class family, decent public school (from which he graduated), Bachelor's degree with (relatively) minimal debt. He works for the Public Library making less than $30k/yr. I have fewer "White Privilege points" (never bothered to graduate College). I'm a software developer making 6 figures. with a degenerate HOMO.
That whole dialog was a setup just for that, wasn't it? Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) at October 16, 2017 11:30 PM (h9QN9) Nope. Dioxygen (i.e. "O2") has for its HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital), two orbitals of equal energy, each on capable of having two paired electrons each. Since Oxygen has two electrons to share in those orbitals, they prefer to occupy different ones since there is an energy penalty for pairing up electrons. That is also an anti-bonding orbital. Dinitrogen (i.e. "N2") has one less electron per atom, so it has no electrons in an anti-bonding orbital, it is tripply bonded. The oxygen has two more electrions with makes it on average doubly bonded. Difluroine (i.e. "F2") has one more per atom than oxygen and is thus singly bonded because it has four electrons in anti-bonding orbitals. Once you go to neon, than the anti-bonding orbitals are full and completely negate the bonding... thus giving a noble gas shell that is inert. No matter what you could've changed, I guarantee you that most likely you would still be about where you're at now.
Maybe not the same place or the same people but the same circumstances. I just had this thrown in my face. After 30 some years of wondering what an old girlfriend was doing and how her life had gone, I connected back up with her over the phone and text. Turns out she married a guy a lot like me and is doing pretty much the same sort of work she was doing when she was with me or when we parted. Oh, there's been kids along the way and some illnesses but pretty much she'd be where she is now if she'd been with me or this other guy. Only difference is, I'd probably be a lot different. Don't know if happier or not. Tough call to judge that from here. So don't miss what never happened and appreciate what you've got and how you got there. Anything else is window dressing. This whole mess is like a suspect that keeps changing his story to fit
facts that the police show him they have. It smells. Of what I don't know. They are claiming incompetence but the smell is of something worse. --- Why do people lie? Why do people hide things? Because the truth will personally damage them somehow. To me, that means that the FBI is implicated in this. HEAVILY. They are shifting the timeline to try to figure out a way to get out of this. A while back there was an article in the NYT about the FBI and terrorism plots. The gist was that the FBI engages people undercover, encourages them to do illegal things, and then swoops in to save the day. Is that what happened here? Or was Paddock selling guns to ISIS for the FBI, and the plan went awry? Who knows? However, I am certain that the FBI is lying and is continuing to lie to us. As for the time stamps, I hear they're hard to get around from an editing standpoint. And there are LOTS of time stamps for the FBI to change. Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That (Back from the Dead) at October 16, 2017 11:46 PM (xq6Dg) I'd be very surprised. Steam needs piping, condensers, and a whole bunch of other shit. That takes space that's been allocated for other purposes already. And not just space, but adjacent space, and consideration about what spaces it's next to, etc. The ship was never designed with steam cats in mind, it was designed to produce a lot of electricity, and electrical buses have different requirements from steam lines. Best case would be MAYBE the rest of the class having some kind of steam system and Ford turning into a kind of floating humiliation with 'EMALS testbed' as a fig leaf for 'can't do anything right'. Also, it would be an enormously embarrassing thing for the Navy and General Atomics to have to admit that they couldn't make EMALS work and had to go back to steam (if they even could). There aren't enough E-7s and O-5s in Christendom to sacrifice on the altar of protecting some contractors' and admirals' retirements. Posted by: hogmartin at October 17, 2017 12:10 AM (y87Qq) 575
Have a friend at FB, John DiLeo, who listed as his all-time favorite ROCK song... "Blue Moon," by the Marcels.
Uh. I commented to him: "John, not to be argumentative, but the Marcels IMHO weren't really rock. They were doo-wop, which from everything I've read was an offshoot of 1950s R&B and jazz, rather than the rock-'n-roll of the time. It *is* a great song though. Also IMHO 'rock' as we know it today wasn't really invented until about 1964, between the Beatles, Kinks, Rolling Stones and Animals (and all the forgotten bands of that era, who they ripped off)." He acknowledged I'm probably right, but that doo-wop was the only subgenre of the rock era he really enjoyed. Posted by: qdpsteve at October 17, 2017 12:10 AM (eMKNe) 576

I liked those cryptic little "push-push" magnetic latches on early 70's stereo rack doors. I copied the method for several mountings in my house, hidden latches, flush-fitting vent grilles, and the like. American Science and Surplus has some real grab-n-snatchers.
As time goes by and technology demands more of us, I've used them less. I've come to realize that strong magnetic fields just hanging around the house can have shocking inadvertent effects on various modern appliances. Screens, phones, tapes, cores, strips, drives, steppers...and whatever is coming. Sounds like these "rare earth" magnets are the 'organic' version of plain ol' magnets.
Posted by: Soothsayer -- Fake Commenter at October 16, 2017 11:13 PM (0JwE Up until circa 1930, magnets were made from types of iron and steel, and they did not retain their magnetism well. Then Alnico (alloy of aluminum, nickel, and cobalt) was invented, and iron magnets went the way of the buggy whip. Alnico reigned supreme in the field until circa 1950, when ceramic (ferrite) magnets were invented. These soon supplanted Alnico in things like speakers and small motors, and could be made in flexible rubber form, too, for thing like refrigerator door seals, and magnetic vehicle signs. Neodymium (rare earth) magnets started showing up circa 1980 in tech stuff like hard drives, and specialty motors. They can be much stronger for their size than either Alnico or ceramic, but cost a lot more, too. Don't put too much credence in the dates I gave you, but the general sequence is correct. Re finding studs: Find an electric outlet near the location in question. The outlet box will be nailed to a stud; since most folks are right-handed, the box will usually be nailed to the right side of the stud. Knocking on the wall with a knuckle will confirm stud's location; studs are 1-1/2 inches wide, so you have a little room for error. They're usually 16" center-to-center (occ 24"). Home Depot sells GRK brand washer-head structural screws; they're gold-colored with a washer head and deep threads, and two or three 3-1/2 inch screws into a stud would hold that TV with me (200#) hanging from it. Rub a bit of wax or soap on the threads before you run the screws in with your trusty screwgun or cordless drill. While you're at HD, buy rare-earth magnets too, in the hardware aisle.

Wouldn't it have been kinda normal, prudent, and smart to have not just the proof of concept, but an actual working model, of the new cat system *before* designing a gazillion-dollar full-deck nuke carrier around it? Huh? Or this just not "who we are" in terms of how NAVSEA and NAVSHIPS works any more? (if they're still called that) Seriously. WTF? Posted by: rhomboid at October 17, 2017 12:27 AM (QDnY+) 615

Bitter, no, but they've extended the service life of the Harriers (2025?), which came as a shock to me. They're old. A wag at a certain large USMC air station said by the time the F-35 is available to replace both the F-18 and AV-8B, the Marines will be able to apply as a chapter of the Commemorative Air Force, thanks to the age of their airframes. So we've got a new all-purpose tactical plane whose first blocs won't be suitable for combat slated to fly off a carrier that can't launch them. But that's OK, the senior brass will be too busy shtupping each other's wives to attend to business, so the young Marxist and black nationalist service academy grads will have to step up to solve the problem. There are "chemical" means to accelerate an aircraft. The exhaust might be kind of hard on that slot in the deck, but they're reliable, and dont' require retrofitting a whole steam plant. So I reckon that would be the way to go, if the magneto system won't light. RATO bottle on a cat-ram. Whoosh.

Seems they don't have the beef to support extended years. Depends on how well designed and built and how much stress they've encountered in their life time. If you buy a camera, what percentage of the purchase price should you then spend for a lens? That is, if you spend $1000 for a camera, should you stick to lenses that are at least 25% of that, or $250? Or is there really no rule of thumb? Posted by: qdpsteve at October 17, 2017 12:46 AM (eMKNe) 633

Bud Holland notwithstanding, B-52s weren't designed for aerobatics. Fighters and attack craft do deal with a lot more stress, which leads to thirty year old airframes designed to do, say, xG being limited to x-1G and so on. A lifetime of CATOBAR operations also puts stress on an airframe on top of the normal stress a fighter sees, even if they are designed with it in mind. qdpsteve, I get into "discussions" about doo-wop several times every car show season. I like doo wop just fine, as far as it goes. Maybe Elvis a little less. If you have a car show with any damn car from the 1950's, it's going to be doo wop and Elvis all damn day long, as if nobody in the 50's ever listened to anything else.
Fact of the matter was, neither was very acceptable until the end of the era. OK, everybody wants to think they're The Rebel, I get it -- although the more that "comes out" about James Dean, the more I'd slide over on the bench, there... I really like cutting-edge jazz music from the same period. Critics are starting to say that 1957 to 1959 was the peak period, both for new releases and for general popularity. And yet, my Dave Brubeck records are...unwelcome. The car I most often "show" is from 1963. Sure I like the Beach Boys, but a guy with a cutting-edge muscle car in 1963 was listening to Stan Getz play bossa nova. That is also not a branch of rock'n'roll. But I'm capable of playing it real loud. You'd be surprised how stuffy these old farts can be. Posted by: Stringer Davis at October 17, 2017 12:52 AM (H5rtT) 642

A camera is only as good as the lens you use. ---- I reject more images because the camera operator screwed up (me) than I do because of a generic (nonbrand name) lens defect. And I have a brand name lens that has a very narrow depth of field when wide open (not a design defect) which is good when I want to isolate the subject from the background, but bad when I'm in a hurry and autofocus picks the wrong thing to focus on. For an amateur photographer, the aftermarket generic lenses are good enough if you are on a tight budget. Posted by: Skandia Recluse at October 17, 2017 12:54 AM (m9X4Y) 646

I'd agree, the guys in 1963 who could afford a muscle car were probably the bossa nova fans (a little older and distinguished). Re Brubeck though, and not to put him down-- he was fantastic-- but he's kind of like Boston on a classic rock radio station, overplayed to death. ;-)

Blood On The Tracks is kind of strange, because in the NY version of the album, the whole album, every song practically, is in Open E, one of those off brand tunings. Several songs are sort of similar. "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome" and "Shelter From the Storm" are the same iirc, just the tempo. "Girl From The North Country" and "Spanish Boots of Spanish Leather" are identical chords.

Per hogmartin's comment, I was told that the USMC's F-18s were all "trapped out" - could no longer do non-emergency, non-war-time carrier service because they had hit their maximum arrested landing number. This may be an out-dated factoid, was a few years back, but the source was a pilot with the Red Devils (VMFA-232) who seemed extremely well-versed in the USMC procurement situation. I know the Navy is doing rebuilds on F-18s to extend service life, not sure if they are carrier-rated or not. I should know this, but certainly Anna Puma does, if she comes along. I've always took real good care of the innards and let the exterior go to shit. I don't drive the exterior I drive the innards. That always runs like a top or at least close to it. one other thing about these DSL cameras. The old 35mm lenses share the same mount as the modern DSL but there are differences, and there are two sizes of DSL sensor, one of which is nearly 35mm sized. FX/DX DSL and 35mm film, but you can still put a 35mm lens on the DSL, but the DSL (small format) lens won't cover the full 35mm frame. And, at the moment, I can't remember which is which. But you will have trouble finding someone to develop your 35mm film anyway. So just use your iPhone, its something like twenty megapixels and has a ton of post-production software apps. Ah, that explains the fringe effect in the second image. The technical term eludes me at the moment. I just took a quick look at my moon shot and am wondering if I could have manually focused the shot. My eyesight isn't good enough, especially in dim light. And I could have 'pushed' the exposure. Basically, I put the camera on a tripod. took some shots and cropped the image. Posted by: Skandia Recluse at October 17, 2017 01:28 AM (m9X4Y) 684

Posted by: Skandia Recluse at October 17, 2017 01:28 AM (m9X4Y) yep, it's basically the subject being occluded by the edge of the eyepiece barrel (if we're talking about the same thing, the cut-off on the left). I wasn't actually looking at the preview for the most part, just holding the phone and looking at it from below, trying to center the bright projection of the lunar image onto the little lens, then peeking up to trip the shutter when the AF calmed down. It was a stupid amount of work, but the actual view through the scope was so amazing that I really want to at least get my feet wet in astrophotography. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals.
Ayn Rand Or the power to run your health insurance, therefore your health care, therefore being able to tell you every little thing that you are or are not allowed to do and those things that you have to do (like daily calisthenics so that the benevolent government isn't burdened by what it claims would be your health issues and its expenses). In fact, running people health care is an easier and cooler way for government to control people than just arresting and fining people for crimes. Or was surrounded by metal. I still say it's hysteresis losses due to the surrounding ship that is causing interference or lack of expected power on launch. Unpredictability is a no no for a cat launch. In fact they won't certify a cat that isn't within a certain range. (obviously or bad things could happen) I don't see how they could possibly have duplicated the shipboard environment on land. Some of you may not realize just how massive a Carrier is. Until you've seen one up close you can't conceive of how much metal has gone into one. My ship was a light cruiser size Missile ship. 770 ft 60 ft beam. And a carrier made us look like a toy next to it. Just no concept until you've seen it. Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That (Back from the Dead) at October 17, 2017 01:55 AM (xq6Dg) 704
