Ace of Spades Pet Thread

Pet thread avove fld.jpg

***

Good afternoon. Welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Sit. Stay. Stay awhile. Good Moron!!!!!

Enjoy the world of animals.

***

A Little of This. A Little of That.

Death and destruction taking place in California. However, a slice of good news from the Golden State. "The California Highway Patrol helped corral a runaway llama that escaped from a farm when its fence was damaged by the North Bay wildfires."

***

I'm not sure how this even happened. Leaving/closing the lid battle will continue.

***

Well, this is difficult to explain. Man doesn't recognize his cat.

***

City living. Unusual pets.

Cute but clumsy.

***

Nice kitty.

Meet The PetMorons

Roxie.jpg

Fellow Morons, meet Roxie. She will swim all day long chasing tennis balls, she's monomaniacal about round green fuzzy orbs. This was at Tahoe this summer.

Thanks,
Gromulin

Awesome photo. Love the shot. Plus looks like Roxie is a super cutie. Thanks!

I am attaching a pic from a couple of winters ago of our little furbabies. They are both Border Collie mixes, even though Jack, the boy on the right, looks more like the typical BC. Our girl Lily is his loyal sister and they cause all kinds of mischief together! The snow they’re running through is about 16 inches deep in this picture. We live in West Virginia now, but originally got them in Memphis, so snow was a big surprise to them

I am a long time lurker, been around almost since Ace of Spades was new. I occasionally post under the nom de plume “Former Lurker.”

Snow! Dogs seem to love the stuff all winter long. Those 2 look like they are having fun. Thanks for the submission.

Cats (1).jpg

Attached is a photo of my parents three cats (although my dad and two of the cats are dead.). My nic is Jake Holenhead (I changed it from JackS) and have been a long time AoSHQ reader of content, lurker, and occasional poster. Here's a brief story to go with the photo if you decide to post it on the Pet Thread. Thanks in advance.

These aren't my cats, there're my parents. But I've been around them long enough they consider me part of their staff. There're siblings and were bought at a shelter as kittens in 2001. The top one was Sparky who liked bananas and cantaloupe. The middle one was Marmal who was fearless, but a dunderhead. The bottom one is Tess, who as you can tell from the photo I took when she was still a kitten hadn't yet learned to sit like a proper lady. Within the last year and a half both the males and my dad have passed on. So now there's just my mom and Tess, and both are old and a bit cranky.

Thanks for sharing Jake. Can't believe that critters getting old are cranky. No, it can't be.

This is my Cheyenne and her favorite "monster boy", our youngest grandson. She just adores him, follows him all over the house and backyard and just sticks to him like glue. - antisocialist

What an adorable photo. It looks like a very good pair of buddies.

sanfrqans.jpg

This is Angus, our 10 year old chihuahua dachsund mix. Thanks for posting his pic. This is his signal for more belly-rubs. By "signal," I mean "demand."

He thinks our kids report to him. If one of them is away from home, he will harass us endlessly then sit by the front door and stare at me and Mrs. Franpsycho as if to marvel at our Stupidity. Girl Franpsycho is headed back to UC in a few weeks. We are preparing now for the ongoing punishments and recriminations.

-San Franpsycho

We here at the Pet Thread call B.S. That dog is terribly abused. Don't talk to us about Demands & Recriminations.

That's a real cute photo. Thank you for sharing with us. Another dog that looks "abused" IYKWIM.

Another week. Another group of beautiful PetMorons.

If you have a story you wish to share, a photo of your PetMoron that you want to show us or some other tidbit; you can reach us at petmorons at gmail dot com. Please include your nic along with what other information you wish to share.

Here's hoping you and your animals have a great weekend!!!

7 Super excellent pet thread! Those cat pics are hilarious! And Roxie, wow. I had a very cool dog, years ago, who jones'd so hard for tennis balls that if someone was having a sidewalk sale and we were walking by, she'd smell 'em out, rout through a box and grab one, which we would then have to pay full shiksa retail for, because she was NOT giving it back.

12 My brother and I were waiting in line at a popular breakfast place & there were kids in line cracking me up. I said to my brother, can you imagine the world without pets or children? It would be absolutely horrible.

My brother, who still misses his first dog & has it in a nicer Urn than some family relatives, on the fireplace mantle, said...huh, no.

But then, I've never said that to anyone before, so maybe I'd get the same reaction from most people.

15 I did the same mistaken identity thing with one of the cats I lived with. Logan was a brown tiger tabby who dashed out the door once and wouldn't come back inside--not, I hasten to add, because I was mean or anything, he just wanted to be outside.

So, I saw him near the mailbox, grabbed him and brought him inside. He freaked out and ran under the table. I took a closer look and realized this isn't my cat. The coloring on the tip of Logan's nose was very distinctive, and this cat didn't have it.

So I opened the door and left it open. Kitty dashed outside.

It is an unqualified success, Emmie! Been here since Sunday evening and today they cautiously ventured out onto the screen porch (brave little beings that they are). It's a summer day here and I have the windows open. They are all agog at the green and the nature! In LA all they saw out the slider was a filthy patio and a stucco wall. So, I feel extremely blessed. They were aces on the car trip, too, which I was not expecting at all. Srsly, heaven has smiled on us! :-)

22 Thanks, Tami. We have Blue at the bx. I spent a lot of time on Amazon, since they'll deliver over here. The German stuff from breeder is mucho expensive, and I don't read the tiny German labels very well. I had a Lhasa when I was a kid that ate eukanuba, and breeder said that it's changed for the worse.
Everyone else has huge doggies what eat lamb and beef daily, and folks on base mostly use purina.

76 Does anyone else have a cat with a really short attention span? Our orange tabby female will be trotting along on her way somewhere and then suddenly stop and look around as if she has completely forgotten what she was doing. Eventually she will wander off in a completely different direction. She's only a couple of years old so it's not an age thing, but I've never had a cat do that before.

77 I've seen a goat being taken for a walk. Of course this was the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle, so that's pretty sedate for that location. The goat seemed to be having a good time.

And speaking of identical cats...

Years ago I take my cat, a barn cat tabby, to the vet for his yearly shots. The vet tech grabs his carrier and says, "we'll call you when the surgery is done." As I clarify that my cat is only in for some poking and prodding, they realize my cat looks identical to a frequent patient of theirs, ha ha so sorry. Then a man waiting at the counter tells the story of how *he* thought the vet had let his cat get loose, brings back the escapee to ream them a new one for slack procedures...and they point to where *his* cat is still locked up. (The kidnapee seemed to like the attention.) All of them handsome tabby cats. Near as I can figure, there was a *cough* prolific tom in the area that passed on his handsome features to his kittens. All of them.

That was Moire, a superb cat who would play aerial intercept catch with me. Miss him...

Maybe a crayfish? My high school biology teacher gave me a live crayfish (which he named Amos) when the class was done studying the crawdad; I kept him in a large fish bowl with aquarium grass and fed it shrimp food and tropical fish food. Amos lived for five years-- I was a college junior when he finally died. I still think about Amos-- crayfish are not aggressive, and some have lovely coloring. Amos had camo coloring: basically soft olive green with sand- and coral-colored spots. Even my mother thought he was nice-looking.

As noted frogs don't live long. Lizards have requirements as to temps/humidity/live food like crickets.

When the little Booties were younger, we would babysit class pets over the summer or school holidays - mostly little rodents. Never lost one!

Also maintained a goldfish tank one year in a classroom, which was more of a commitment than I thought it would be, but they're not exactly cute like rodents.

I knew a family that got involved with helping out with classroom parakeets, and the parakeets started nesting & breeding - had no idea but under the right conditions parakeets are like bunnies!

None of our dogs ever were finicky eaters. They were given food--always dry--with an occasional table scrap dropped in. If they chose not to eat, nothing else was offered.

Hunger ALWAYS wins. We DID make sure the food met recommended min specs for the animals, Purina was the choice for years.

Labs, of course are mobile appetites, so if they don't eat, they're sick and need the vet.

118 Leopard geckos. Pretty easy to keep. They just need a heat source from an under tank heating pad on one side of the tank and a cool side. Feed meal worms once or twice a week. A little water bowl. A little soda cap of powdered vitamins for them to lick as needed. And a place to hide. They can live 10to 15 years. We have three. They can go weeks, even a few months without eating. Probably the easiest lizard to keep.

126 In second grade, my daughter came to the car after school with a baby chick. The teacher had passed out to any kid who wanted one the babies they'd raised from eggs as a science lesson. Without consulting whether the parents wanted a baby chick.

At first the chick lived in a cardboard box in the living room while we tried to figure out how to get rid of it. Then in got big, and had to live in the basement at night. In the morning, I would go open the door and this now big chicken would climb the stairs out of the basement, turn a corner and go upstairs to the hall, and then through the kitchen to the door to the side yard.

This was all perfectly acceptable to the chicken, and to my daughter, who played with it after school. But I tell you, a chicken in the house is an abomination before the Lord! And I LIKE chickens!

Eventually we found a petting zoo some ways out of town who took the chicken. And none too soon.

Coco is definitely une vraie Parisienne-- loves to be combed, brushed, and otherwise prettified. And she really queens it where Casey (my dude cat) is concerned. She expects to be fed first at dinnertime-- which he doesn't mind. 142 My Coco is what they call a dilute tortie-- basically tortie colors, but softer. I named her after Mlle. Chanel, who was known to her friends as Coco (in fact the House of Chanel still sells a perfume called Coco). Coco is definitely une vraie Parisienne-- loves to be combed, brushed, and otherwise prettified. And she really queens it where Casey (my dude cat) is concerned. She expects to be fed first at dinnertime-- which he doesn't mind. Happily she is as fond of him as he is of her-- they groom each other and pile into the same cat bed (or my bed) during the fall and winter.

--My favorite pet growing up was a calico named Coco, due to my brother's inability to say calico. *BLATANT BOOK THREAD PROMO: COCO WILL BE IN MY NOVEL* She was definitely a diva, after out other calico got lost, she because grumpy and more high maintenance . . . which may have been why I bonded with her.

Beautiful cat.

145 My BIL brought six little turtles and a small plastic kiddie pool to the beach. The turtles had small circles painted on their backs in different colors.

And then the turtles went down the slide. The first to reach the painted circle on the far side was the Winner of that round.

Of course we had a betting strip. We wound up with a small crowd joining us who wanted in on the action.

At the end, we gave away the turtles to kids who wanted them. I've sometimes wondered how many "made it."

164 Got a new cat this week. Showed up on our porch back in June. Female, 6-8 months old. A little skittish, but not feral. We were concerned about her having a litter so decided to entice her in the house and at least get her fixed and vaccinated even if she didn't want to remain a housecat.

Took her to the vet Wednesday. She had already been fixed! So just got the shots and had her microchipped. She has no interest whatsoever in going back outside and is getting along OK enough with the 19 year old male that could care less about her and the 6 year old male who is curious about her but she growls when he gets too close. No fur flying though and no hissing after the first day, so things are looking good. She has decided ceo dad is her buddy and likes to sit near him.

Gotta come up with a name. Just calling her Kitty and Baby Girl for now. She is a grey shorthair with white tuxedo front and white gloves and spats. Didn't want another young cat due to our age, but DS says he will look after her if that is ever needed.

Naming suggestions appreciated!

"Aunt B" appears to be about 2 years old, all black except for a white patch on her neck.

Her kittehs are beautiful, 2 grey stripped and a light grey with the prettiest eyes.

We live rurally so I'm hoping they'll be good "farm cats" and we'll take good care of them. Already bought a cat hut from Feralvilla. Expensive, but easy to reproduce. I just needed one to see how it went together. My brother who had several feral cats said the huts were recommended by locals who used them.

My retired uncle who lives alone was absolutely devastated when his beloved dog passed away a year or so ago. The day following the burial, he had left his front door open and in walked a tortie who decided, "Yep; I'm living here now."

My uncle, who never had an interest in cats, contacted my mother and mentioned that, while he liked the cat, he was concerned about her attacking the nearby wildlife as she remained outside for the most part. She recommended that he take the cat to the vet for a checkup and spaying and just keep her inside. He's now got a tortie as well as another dog who get along extremely well.

She'll find a handful of comfortable spots in time, Carol. But I would suggest buying a plush sherpa blankie at WalMart - they have a lot to choose from this time of the year. Fold it into a square and I'll be it will become a favorite bed. Plus it will become a fur trap. That's always a good thing with kitties.

They do prefer elevated spots in general, with a good view of the room. I'd give you my cat tree (Harli ignores it) if you were in NoVA.

Second Miley's suggestion here. Those really cheap WalMart blankies are great -- whether for kidlets or pets. Easy wash and dry, but it is amazing how they know their own blankie. They do sort of just show up and take over the joint. Tackroom calico is effusively affectionate to people she knows as friends, but the vet personnel just dread her. She required a touch up to an operation on her face where she had an abscess blow out and the vets sin was due to do it, when his dad found out, even tho Taylor is a good vet, he did it himself with the exclamation "oh no! Not that one!" Nevertheless he just charged 75$ to do it because they know im managing a feral colony in my own without the resources of a big charity behind me.

216 150 -- hedge hog is a very bad idea for a classroom pet. First off, they are nocturnal. Secondly, they have the disposition of a really PO'ed rat. My youngest son gave one to his fiancee a couple years back. Obi Wan hated to be picked up and spent his social hour being anything but social. About the only thing he liked was his monthly bath. All those adorable pictures of happy hedge hogs are all terribly wrong. According to Obi Wan's breeder, all hedge hogs are grumpy little ingrates. (As an aside, Obi Wan crossed the Rainbow Bridge this morning. He had cancer, which the vet said was very common in hedge hogs. Whatever kind he had was very aggressive, and doubled in size in just one week. The fiancee will get a new one for Christmas.)

217 Miley - 211: A few years back, I decided to name my cats in tune with their true personalities. One was named Attila and his successor was named Khan after Jingis Khan.

After I had Khan for a couple of years, I told my kids no more kittens from up on the next block; there was entirely too much Siamese in their ancestry. Khan was nothing more than a tabby colored Siamese. If she was awake, her mouth was going nonstop. And she had that raucous Siamese yowl when she was ticked. She also had a very Siamese conformation. I went to a local cat show she said she was still with me and watched the judge point out the desirable physical characteristics. Khan had the long Siamese body and the wedge shaped head. Khan's successor doesn't have the body, but does have the wedge shaped head and the imperious voice. I suspect at least one of her parents came from up on the next block. (Don't ask how I ended up with her. Very long story.)

218 Damnit! I accidentally deleted my response CFO mom.
Lexi must be afraid of being abandoned. She has followed me every where I went in the house once she decided she liked me.
