My personal opinion is that the Boy Scouts looked at how many members they've lost since they went all SJW - didn't the LDS church pull out and start their own program? And anybody who has had boys in Boy Scouts and girls in Girl Scouts knows that the actual Boy Scout programming is far better, so they're going after the girls as members to shore up their membership.
The GS programming is all SJW all the time. Close relationship with Planned Parenthood. And the GS started this whole thing by outsourcing their older girl programming to the Boy Scouts anyway (Sea Scouts, Venture or Adventure Programming).

There are repeated instances of abuse being known and reported in school districts and churches and athletic programs and on and on and on where the people higher up in the chain either ignore it or work actively to cover up the crimes.
Then you have the false accusations about absolutely ludicrous and impossible events where the people are hounded out and lives ruined. The day school cases. The false rape accusation. The Title IX insanity.
There's something there that I can't quite grasp or articulate about how the suppression of the truth in one area will manifest itself in another area but in a warped way.

FWIW, neither my Troop nor my Pack receive much in the way of resources from the national organization or, for that matter, our Council. If anything, they are taking resources from US, in the form of the rechartering fees, exorbitant prices on badges/books/etc, and forced participation in their various fundraisers.
Hell, my Troop was forced to allow a representative to pitch fundraising to the parents while their boys were in the other room in their meeting. Basically a very hard sell high pressure talk trying to shame these parents into "giving." We already have quarterly dues and the Scouts do one fundraiser a year to pay for stuff the BSA or Council won't. Not that they pay for a lot anyway. Even the camps are fee-based.

Doesn't quite address the latching onto wacky stories, but the idea is in line with your overall theory: people experiencing bad stuff have to channel that rage, and since the cannot/won't direct it at the people making their life Hell for reasons, they pick the easiest target.

That was a good post by Ringo and part of what has me pondering this.
The issue is that there is no direct correlation between, say, abuse of women involved with US Gymnastics and Jackie Coakley making up Haven Monahan. It's different areas of the country and different time periods.
What I'm flailing towards is why is it that people will believe the outlandish (there were tunnels under the day care where we sacrificed animals!) but not the mundane horror (the nice guy doctor was molesting the girls or the priest and boys or whatever). Is it some kind of unconscious release valve? Again, there are huge problems with that thought since the people who are reacting to the insane are not the ones who are suppressing the real horrors.
Now throw in all the examples above of actual police problems with fake police problems and there's something there though I can't pin it down.

It's weird right now. Short answer is they're not completely disassociated right now. The LDS Church has said they want to make their own program. My local program is shut down. Some local programs still stand, with the caveat that they get to dictate their membership. The Church will shut down any groups if someone tries to force membership they're not willing to allow.

The heart of both organizations is the willingness of parents - moms & dads - to volunteer their time to be troop leaders, den mothers, etc. That's the traditional, middle class model of scouting.
The new model of expanding scouting to underserved communities means hiring staff to organize and lead troops in minority communities. Parents aren't involved. It costs the national organizations a lot of money to deliver scouting to these troops, money that comes from the traditional troops selling product and paying for their membership.
Plus the leadership at the very top is paid millions, just like any other "charity".

The Italian actress Asia Argento said her experience with Weinstein went like this: he demanded she massage him, then he forced oral sex on her, over her protests. She was disgusted by him, but she went on to have consensual sexual contacts with him for years, because she was afraid he would ruin her career if she didn't.
In Paltrow's recent statements, she appears to be trying to rationalize her behavior with Weinstein, while not actually admitting it. She says she was "petrified" of being fired from Emma, she was young, she was naive, she was scared, etc.
Argento deserves credit for her willingness to tell the ugly truth about what happened with her and Weinstein, because that could not have been easy to admit. I just wish some of these other women had as much backbone as Argento does. They would be doing themselves, and their daughters, a favor.
Paltrow is saying now that everything she does, she does for her daughter Apple. If she really doesn't want her daughter to ever have to face the kind of abuse she faced, she should tell the whole truth about what happened to her, as ugly and embarrassing as it may be.

I understand why you feel that way, but I do have a little sympathy for Paltrow. Not as much as I do for women like Argento, who told the truth, or women like Heather Graham and Mira Sorvino, who turned Weinstein down, knowing what he could (and would) do to their careers.
When this thing started with Weinstein, Paltrow was young, and she was ambitious, and she did what she thought she had to do to keep her dreams of a movie career alive. Argento did the same thing. It must have been humiliating and disgusting. But I imagine that Paltrow, a self-professed daddy's girl, wanted to please her father and make him proud, and she was probably thrilled to get signed to do the Emma movie. When Weinstein threatened to take that big role away from her, and destroy her career before it had even begun, that must have been devastating.
So I can kind of understand why the young Paltrow did what she did. What I can't understand is why now, at age 45, she still won't tell the truth about what happened. Yes, it would be embarrassing, but people survive embarrassment. Argento did. And it's not as if Paltrow is planning to make more movies. She has already said she's retiring from movies to concentrate on her business, and at her age, she's not likely to be offered that many more film roles anyway. So why not do the right thing?

Alex, maybe it's that people can't bear to look head-on at the wrong that's close to them--say, a husband who's got roving eyes--and so they latch onto, say, the biohazards of radio waves or the lack of this vitamin in this foodstuff. You see bad women's magazines redirecting anger in those ways.
