Explaining just what I had hoped the story to say is very difficult. I suppose, I hoped, by setting a particularly brutal ancient rite in the present and in my own village to shock the story's readers with a graphic dramatization of the pointless violence and general inhumanity in their own lives.I look at it like this: what is the worst, the most horrific thing you can think of? In Jackson's case, it was ritualistic human sacrifice set on a backdrop of a small, placid village, so small that everyone pretty much knew everyone else. Of course, that was back in 1948. Nowadays, kids are exposed to bloody-as-hell horror movies such as Saw, Hostel, and the like, and graphically violent, bloody-as-hell TV series such as Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead, compared to which a ritualistic human sacrific is weak tea. Not to mention Stephen King, who has milked the "creepy small town" theme to a fare-thee-well. Yes, there is some of that pomo non-judgey stuff in the mix, too, but I don't think that's the main thing. The main thing is that The Lottery, relying as it does on shock value to make its point, is simply outdated. So what does is take to shock millennials? What will make them think "Ugh, that's just messed up."? What about a story about a small town lottery whose winner has to move permanently out of his parents' basement? Is that scary enough for them? See, that's the problem: the only example I could think of is a satirical one. In order to be creeped out by the Abnormal, you need to have a strong sense of what the Normal is, or what it should be. And right now we're pretty much at the point where the two magnetic poles are reversed, where the Normal is now the Abnormal, and vice versa. I wonder what sorts of horror stories millennials are going to be writing? Moron Recommendation Moron commenter 'Rgallegos' likes The Fall of the Duke of Duval: A Prosecutor's Journal by John E. Clark, about the near-legendary corruption of Texas politics: The name Parr may not be familiar to most readers, but many know Lyndon Johnson's first U.S. Senate election was tainted: this 1948 "Box 13" fraud was perpetrated in the town of Alice in Jim Wells County, Texas, by George Parr, the "duke" of neighboring Duval County. Clark, an assistant federal prosecutor under U.S. Attorney William Sessions (later FBI director) in the 1970s, played a key role in the long federal grand jury investigation of the Parr machine and later trials of its leading operators. His book describes the system of patronage and corruption Archie Parr developed in the early 1900s and his son George ran until a 1970s legal onslaught--set off quite unintentionally by an IRS audit of an Austin contractor--brought it down. Not since Hillary Clinton have we seen a national-level politician more corrupt than LBJ. And while many would argue that Nixon should top the list, what he did was peanuts compared to the wholesale graft and grift of the Democrats. I encourage interested parties should read It Didn't Start With Watergate by Victor Lasky, a book I've touted on more than one previous book thread. Lasky contends that Watergate was mainly a media event, points to Democratic scandals which have been relatively ignored, and claims that leading Democrats were fully aware of plans for the break-in and did nothing to prevent it. ___________ 186 I can't recommend "The Boys in the Boat" by Daniel J. Brown highly enough. It's an amazing story, that weaves together depression era life, the rise of Nazi Germany and the University of Washington's improbable selection and performance at the 1936 Olympics. It is meticulously detailed, with amazing side stories. One in particular: Bobby Moch, the superlative coxswain for Washington, learns on the eve of the voyage to Hitler's Olympics, that he is Jewish, a fact his 1st gen. immigrant father concealed from him because he thought their life would be easier. The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics is $10.99 for the Kindle edition. The paperback edition is about the same price. ___________ 'Ette shibumi recommends The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand: Amazing book. Not as long as Atlas Shrugged, but still longish. What's scary about it is that I have heard people mouthing the exact same collectivist trash that she wrote about decades ago.Rand was born and spent the first 20 years of her life in Russia during the early years of the communist revolution, so she was an expert on collectivist trash. If I was going to start someone out on Rand, I'd give them this book rather than Atlas Shrugged. It has all of the ideas contained in Atlas Shrugged without the endless speechifying. I think this is another book that screams "Make me a movie!!" I don't think the first version they made was all that good, even though Rand herself wrote the screenplay. A new version, scheduled for a 2019 release, is "in development". ___________ Books By Morons Moron author Mark Robbins has put his sci-fi utopia novel Walden Shock on sale and wants us morons to take advantage of it. Using current science and technology as a firm foundation, this fictional chronicle provides the reader with a truly positive and optimistic view of a future utopian society. The “common”, or “typical” opinion of mankind’s future is one of a sterile world devoid of love, freedom or initiative – and where lives are largely under the rigid, scientific control of a global despot. In sharp contrast, this enjoyable story envisions a world in which human ingenuity and family cohesion are the cornerstones of society. Walden Shock makes a vibrant and logical argument for the value of freedom, discipline and integrity in our society (current or future), and this well-spun story is much more fun than lecture. You will be stimulated and entertained as the singularity arrives in West Texas with guns, cowboys and robots – this story is fun!I say: any novel with guns, cowboys and robots is worth reading. I plunked down 99 cents (the sale price) for Walden Shock, and maybe you should, too. ___________ Also on sale for 99 cents is the Kindle edition of A Rambling Wreck: Book 2 of The Hidden Truth by moron author Hanz Schantz: Off to college for the education he'll need to defeat the guardians of the hidden truth, Peter must infiltrate a deadly conspiracy, thwart an attempted social justice takeover of the school, save his professors from assassination, and somehow find time to study for finals. The stakes are now higher than ever. To succeed, Peter must discover who burned down the Tolliver Library, find new allies in his fight, and secure the assistance of the legendary George P. Burdell himself. This novel, incidentally is a finalist for the Conservative-Libertarian Fiction Alliance (CFLA) Book of the Year. The full list can be seen here. ___________ Don't forget the AoSHQ reading group on Goodreads. It's meant to support horde writers and to talk about the great books that come up on the book thread. It's called AoSHQ Moron Horde and the link to it is here: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/175335-aoshq-moron-horde. ___________ So that's all for this week. I read The Rescue Mission by John Ball because it got mentioned on the Book Thread a while back. Published in 1965, the novel deals with two Civil Air Patrol pilots flying a malfunctioning Super Constellation in an attempt to evacuate two medical cases from a Caribean island. Decent story and lots of technical details about the Connie's mechanical systems. The author also shows America beginning to recognize and overcome racism (one of the CAP pilots is of Chinese heritage and the Connie's regular flight engineer is black). A quick read and I liked it a lot. Rating = 4.5/5
I also read The Grantville Gazetter IV edited by Eric Flint. The book is an anthology of short stories and essays set in the 1632 universe in which a modern West Virginian town gets sent back to 1630s Europe by the "Ring of Fire." Nothing was awful but nothing really grabbed me, although the story in which a 60 year old up-time widower and a 30 year old down-time German widow feel mutual attraction for each other does have a sweet ending. If you are an oil field engineer, there is a long article on 1630s oil field development that didn't keep my attention but has an extensive bibliography. Rating = 3/5. Currently re-reading "Afghanistan:Soviet Vietnam" by Vlad Tamarov.
The book is a history of his tour of duty there from 1984 to 1986 with the 103rd Airborne Division. Interesting on how ineffective the Russians were in country and how basic their organizational system was in getting draftees thru boot camp and dumped into their front line units. Lots of pics too from the author during the time he spent there which still surprises me. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at March 25, 2018 09:06 AM (EoRCO) 16
Reading 'The Secret War' by Sanche De Gramont. Published in 1962 it's about U.S.A. and Soviet espionage. At the beginning of the Cold War we were newcomers, but the Soviets had a long history of spying, mostly on their own people, going back hundreds of years.
During the 20s and 30s the Soviets had such an easy time getting information from us, and they got a lot, that they had a difficult time separating the good from the bad. 1917 the U.S. Army/State Department formed a cryptographic unit called MI-8 (a precursor of the NSA), or the Cipher Bureau and broke foreign and our diplomatic codes. Shutdown in 1929, one theory is when Henry L. Stimson became Secretary of State in 1929 he was appalled the unit existed. He is supposed to have said; 'Gentlemen do not read each other's mail.' If true then what an ignoranus. Some head music. The Lottery, the classic short story by Shirley Jackson"
Never did hear of it until the recent kerfuffle, and still don't get it. Was the author trying to ban stoning? Hardly an ancient "ritual" - it was a punishment for an action, not a "lottery". I rate it a solid "meh" at best. Oh, and A.C. Doyle (he of Sherlock) may have kicked off the "kreepy small/rural" vibe... Posted by: Anon a mouse at March 25, 2018 09:09 AM (7LY+6) 20
I'm going to take a short break from military history to read Gordon Chang's The Coming Collapse of China. A snippet...
"China is hot. The world sees a glorious future for this sleeping giant, three times larger than the United States, predicting it will blossom into the world's biggest economy by 2010. According to Chang, however, a Chinese-American lawyer and China specialist, the People's Republic is a paper dragon. Peer beneath the veneer of modernization since Mao's death, and the symptoms of decay are everywhere: Deflation grips the economy, state-owned enterprises are failing, banks are hopelessly insolvent, foreign investment continues to decline, and Communist party corruption eats away at the fabric of society" Might be fun. This week - reading "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" as a break from slightly heavier stuff. It's a charming, expository novel, which one hardly sees any more; a story told in letters by the various characters. It's set in immediate-post WWII England and the Channel Islands, when everyone was still pretty much numbed by the war. (Did you know that wartime rationing went on in England for about ten years after the war? That's how broken they were - and they were the winners!)

Anybody read "Unholy Terror: Bosnia, al-Qa'ida, and the Rise of Global Jihad" by John Schindler? It was recommended to me because Slick's "humanitarian" bombing of the Orthodox Christians on behalf of the Muslims has bugged the fuck out of me ever since it happened, particularly how the MFM was spooging uncontrollably at the thought of going to war. I'm not very far into it but it's already confirming nearly every fucking thing I strongly suspected, namely that there was and always has been a radical muz element present there that collaborated with the nazis that persisted through the post war commies, who oddly considered the fucking rock worshippers as somehow tolerable even though those cocksuckers are just as politically motivated as the red internationalist fuckers. Anyway I'm still into the historical matters and it's just dawned on those red dumbasses after the Iran revolution they start seeing pictures of Khomeini in windows that maybe this Shia/Sunni split isn't gonna keep those assfucks from joining the umma anyway and sorting out the differences afterward. Just fucking brilliant.
Anyway, I wanted to know if anyone else has read this. It might be OOP and there was only one copy available in the entire Cleveland public library since this wouldn't be of interest to most of the commies and buttfuckers who use the system. I'll second the recommendations for The Fountainhead. Ayn Rand's classic portrayal of an individualistic architect remains sadly relevant many decades after the original release.
If you check out the rest of the CLFA Book of the Year finalists, you'll find lots of other great books. I've read seven of the ten so far, and they're at least good and mostly great. Voting opens April 2, so I hope you'll read as many as you can and express your opinion when the time comes. I read The River God's Vengeance by John Maddox Roberts. This is the eighth in the SPQR mystery series. In 53 B. C. Decius Metellus is serving his year as aedile, the lowest rung on the ladder of Roman authority. When an insula, a Roman apartment building, collapses, Decius is off to investigate the corrupt building trades. His investigation leads him to the highest and most powerful levels of Roman society. As usual, one learns much about Roman life during these times.
On the Kindle, I read Raven Shadow: An Adventure of the Spirit by Win Blevins. This is an excellent book which tells the story of a Lakoda, Joseph Blue Crow. When Blue is born, his grandmother declares that he will receive his great-grandfather's pipe to signify that he was born to carry the sacred ways of the Sioux. Blue goes to boarding school at 14 and then on to college. He lives in the white man's world for twelve years; but when his girlfriend commits suicide and his grandmother dies withing days of each other, he moves back to South Dakota, but not back to the rez. Trying to walk with one foot on the red path and one on the white, Blue stumbles into eleven years of alcoholism and despair until he is saved from a suicide attempt by his friend. After cleaning himself up with the help of AA meetings, Blue immerses himself in the world of sweat lodges, four-day fasts on mountain tops and travels to the spirit world which culminates in him going back to Wounded Knee to find the fate of his direct ancestors there. In the author's notes Blevins says that although this is a work of fiction, his primary goals were to depict an honest account of the Ghost Dance, Wounded Knee, and the Big Foot Memorial Riders who follow the trail of their Lakoda ancestors in late December each year. Win Blevins is an authority on the Plains Indians and the fur-trade era of the West. When one reads Raven Shadow one learns a lot about Lakoda history, culture, and religion while reading an excellent story of one man's walk through life. Just finished Catriona which is the sequel to Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson. Hadn't realized there *was* a sequel until my "collected works" book had it. Much less of an adventure story and more angsty romance, which probably explains it being less well known.

I recommend Ayn Rand's first novel "We the Living". It told the story of a young woman in the 1920s Soviet Union. She said many years later that it was the closest she would ever come to writing an autobiography.
The novel was published in the 1930s after being turned down by a number of publishers, one of whom told her that she "didn't understand Communism". Posted by: rickl at March 25, 2018 09:29 AM (sdi6R) 64

I received, but have not yet read (so many books on THAT stack!) two book on Plains Indian warfare: Fate Worse than Death by a husband-wife team surnamed Michno, a collection of captivity narratives mostly from women, I believe, and Counting Coup and Cutting Horses, by Anthony McGinnis, which is a general history of intratribal warfare on the Plains during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Both should be interesting in perhaps gruesome ways. I got the Michno book because I am trying to run down some good references for the (mis)treatment of women in Plains warfare - A number of the better western fiction writers I run across mention it (such as Elmer Kelton's great The Wolf and the Buffalo) and I've run across references to it non-fiction, but I don't have any primary sources. I'm hoping that the McGinnis book, along with another book I have but haven't yet read, Calloway's One Vast Wintercount, will give me a solid grasp on the wars between various NA tribes during the 18th and early 19th century, before the US began the conquest of the West in earnest. Close tags in a nick is cheating. I'm still reading Turgenev's "Sportsman's Sketches" because Hemingway liked it and it was free on kindle. Our guy is a sportsman in that he's travelling all around going hunting, but he doesn't talk about the sport much. It's all recounting stories of the people he meets. He's an aristo but takes pleasure in understanding the lives of the peasants he meets. The problem I'm having is the intricate nature of the czarist class system. The guy we just met is a proprietor peasant, which is different from a peasant, let alone a freed serf or a regular serf or a serf who chose not to buy his freedom. Russia's system before communism was a miserable face-grinding mess of basically horror for anyone who wasn't aristo. I understand their desire for changing that, and why they'd be dumb enough to buy into communism, since almost nobody in the country could even count to seven. Ignorance, oppression, and unfairness are fertile ground for the commie agitator. The problem is, of course, that things got no better for the average serf. Last weekend I had had enough of politics and took a break from the internet. I read "Dead Wake" by Erik Larson. It told the story of the last voyage of the Lusitania.
He told the story as a narrative, but there are endnotes and a bibliography to back up his quotes. I liked the structure of the book, which consisted of many short chapters alternating between the Lusitania, the U-20, and the top secret "Room 40", which was a part of British intelligence that was intercepting wireless transmissions from the German navy. Even though we all know how it ends, the author did a good job building up the tension. While there was no Jack and Rose on board the ship, the book actually did have a love story as a subplot, between Woodrow Wilson and Edith Bolling Galt. For reals. However, I'm angriest at the GOPe cocksuckers who let that piece of shit bill get constructed and passed in the first place. They're more interested in sticking it to PDT, fucking over the base, and sucking Democrat dick than doing what they ought to be doing. So far PDT is about the only one who isn't constantly grabbing his ankles for the progs and begging to get it harder, so I'm not going to start damning the man from the rooftops.

My walls used to be covered with old National Geographic maps. Basically my grandparents started collecting the magazine back when it had no photos on the cover and kept all the maps that were sent out with it, plus the ones I had from my days of getting the journal. I don't know how many there are but its a pretty sizable amount.
But the walls are basically just painted plywood and its hard to get a pin into. Plus, with my windows open in summer the wind blows them pretty badly and they started to tear. And since its an attic room, the walls are partly slanted in along the roof line, so they hang more loosely and it wasn't working out. I love maps. Part of the reason I love role playing games is the excuse to make maps of places that never existed. I've gotten a lot of use out of turning existing topo maps from ranger stations in Oregon wilderness areas into gaming locations. I had an 1879 altas centerfold map of Plymouth County framed and it's on my wall. It's cool to look at how the geography itself has changed due to storms. Posted by: #neverskankles at March 25, 2018 09:55 AM (RkSNw) There are significant substantive differences between the two. The military is something concrete, beneficial and purposeful. It's also one of the few legitimate things the Feds spend money on. "For the children" is invariably nothing more than a manipulative ploy to hit people in teh FEEELZ about socialist policies and eroding Constitutional rights. However, neither one should be some kind of magic talisman that makes bad policy or bad budgetary decisions good or acceptable. Just looking for a silver lining here. Posted by: IrishEi at March 25, 2018 09:54 AM (HiDrR) I'm desperate enough to catch that sliver of a lifeline. That said, this was the golden opportunity to shame Congress in front of the entire nation and really galvanize the struggle between the people and the socialist Deep State. He could have demanded that they write two separate bills for the defense budget and the wall, and then a separate spending bill for all else but at 20% less across the board (and that could've been the bargaining chip to start the deal making). Instead, he allowed them to publicly humiliate him and us. And the icing on the cake was that veto threat which went nowhere. It was a moment that would have been a political game-changer and could have dealt a significant blow to the political class. He blew it big time, and I don't think another opportunity like this will come along before the midterms. And after that, all bets are off. Shame. Posted by: J.J. The local public library here in Salem is a 70s concrete slab monstrosity. WHen it was originally opened, they painted the slabs alternate hues of purple and orange, to make it even more of an eyesore. But inside wasn't too bad because the shelves covered up most of the purple and orange carpeting.
Since then there's been a lot of reno work and replacing the carpeting, powerwashing the hideous paint off. Its not as bad, but still that brutal stone block construction over most of the building. And they have book sales every so often to move duplicate copies or books that aren't being checked out as much, which makes it a nice place to get old books they don't like any longer. I really do think that some stories about the horrors of having government spying on you really are due. Its ridiculous, all the stuff people were worried about in the 1990s they readily and deliberately welcome into their homes and cars today. Because instead of forcing it on people through law, they presented it as trendy, hip, and exciting new TECHNOLOGY and people who F'IN LOVE SCIENCE eat that up with a spoon without thinking about it even once.
In the 1980s there were all these stories about the horrors of government surveillance and silencing voices, such a V for Vendetta. Reading The Fall of the Duke of Duval: A Prosecutor's Journal by John E. Clark. If anyone knows what Box 13 is and how it benefitted Lyndon B. Johnson to start his political career than this book is for you. Ballot stuffing, graft, bribes, murder, and guess who it helped? Demodcrats. Great book!
A summary from Booklist: "The name Parr may not be familiar to most readers, but many know Lyndon Johnson's first U.S. Senate election was tainted: this 1948 "Box 13" fraud was perpetrated in the town of Alice in Jim Wells County, Texas, by George Parr, the "duke" of neighboring Duval County. Clark, an assistant federal prosecutor under U.S. Attorney William Sessions (later FBI director) in the1970s, played a key role in the long federal grand jury investigation of the Parr machine and later trials of its leading operators. His book describes the system of patronage and corruption Archie Parr developed in the early 1900s and his son George ran until a 1970s legal onslaught--set off quite unintentionally by an IRS audit of an Austin contractor--brought it down. The Parrs controlled their territory's dominant Hispanic population by selecting Latino agents and providing jobs and services to needy constituents; in the meantime, astonishing sums of money flowed from county school boards and reclamation offices to the Parrs and their friends. A true-crime tale with a vivid local-politics focus." Posted by: Rolando Gallegos at March 25, 2018 10:20 AM (59GQk) 183

I recommend Ayn Rand's "Anthem". It's quite unlike anything else she wrote. It's longer than a short story but shorter than a novel, so I guess it's a novella.
It is set in a future collectivist society where words like "I" and "Me" have been banned. In that, it eerily presages Orwell's Newspeak in "1984" which was written a decade later. But Rand was a pretty obscure writer at the time, and "Anthem" is one of her lesser-known works even today. I don't think Orwell read it before writing "1984". I remember reading at least ten years ago a history professor stating that his students had been so situationally ethic and multicultured that they refused to condemn outright the Holocaust. Sure, Adolph was a bad guy but what about the British in Malaysia? It doesn't surprise me at all that millennial are OK with The Lottery.
Speaking of which, I finished Dean Koontz' Ashley Bell this week and it makes use of a number of literary allusions, in particular Flannery O'Conner's A Good Man Is Hard to Find, specifically the famous line that grandma would have been a good person if "had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life." Like many Koontz books, the ending is not as good as suspense building part of the book. I will say, however, the ending does raise some literary philosophy pojnts of its own. I've been trying a lot of alternate authors I've never read before lately and its been a lot of strikeouts. Even some classics aren't working out. I tried to read Beau Geste and I cannot comprehend how it got made into a movie. Its just not very good at all and the writing is obnoxious.
Over and over its the same thing: a person starts telling a story about something exciting that happened, but stops or withholds information that actually makes it exciting while things delay getting the information out. They have dinner and go to bed. The next day, more of the story is told, again not giving anything away. Over and over until finally the big reveal which is actually quite interesting, but by that point you don't give a crap. Repeatedly. The Lottery, the classic short story by Shirley Jackson"
Never did hear of it until the recent kerfuffle, and still don't get it. Was the author trying to ban stoning? Hardly an ancient "ritual" - it was a punishment for an action, not a "lottery". - I interpret it as a warning that the hysteria of extremism can lead to irrational evil. OM suggests that the story is out of date considering the prevalence of contemporary evil but perhaps that is just what makes it timely. Planned Parenthood anyone? As I said, I will watch and wait. Posted by: Soona at March 25, 2018 10:44 AM (Fs5vw) The problem with that logic is that a strong military is not built in Washington. It is not created by giving the bureaucrats in the Pentagon billions and billions of dollars to build shiny new toys. A strong military comes from a people who are committed to their own defense. Who will send their sons to sign up and take an oath to protect and defend. Protect and defend what?? And with what?? We're sending them to march in the streets and change "guns are bad!" We have no national unity, and no leadership in Washington committed to help create one. Anything this Administration and those bureaucrats will create, with the money directed by this bill, will be in service of lining their own pockets and creating a paper military. But people are free to tell themselves the same lie over and over again: As long as we spend enough money on the military, we can tolerate giving in to the Washington establishment. We've been doing that for as long as I've been alive, and what has it gotten us. Posted by: BurtTC at March 25, 2018 11:00 AM (Pz4pT) 249

Another recommendation for Boys in the Boat. It was un-put-downable for me. Finally, to tie together Georgette Heyer and classic mysteries, her eleven mystery novels are a hoot. Those that don't follow rules will always eventually defeat those that do. Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at March 25, 2018 10:48 AM (2DOZq) Actually, the opposite is true. History records over and over, that those nations who adhere to certain standards of behavior, that have a purpose and a direction, will always defeat those who don't. The problem is, that state of being appears to always be temporary. Some have made it last longer than others, but eventually nations fall, because they stop having a set of rules by which they operate, and resort to the feel-goods and the chaos behind it. Not allowing no-go zones, not surrendering neighborhood hot spots to the criminals. There was research being done at the time, that showed if you cleaned up this hot spot, the criminals didn't just move elsewhere. They stopped committing the crimes! Nowadays, there are no-go zones in every major city, and the criminals know it. So they do what the do, in ever expanding circles. And the more they take, the more the cities give away. This was written well overall and broken into chapters by where he resided at the time, beginning as a young man in London. Certain chapters stood out above the others. Borinage, St. Remy, and Auvers were largely dark and troubling, as was his life at those times. Paris and Arles are lively and full of color. It helped me that I also own Van Gogh: The Complete Paintings by Rainer Metzger, a collection of reproductions of all his works (reputedly) so I could follow along via his works with what Stone was describing in words. My buddy owns a boat sales/service company. He got a job to install electronics in a brand new half million dollar sailboat for a rich Wall Street type that had literally never sailed offshore. This was his first boat. He installed what was at the time a state of the art GPS system tied into an autopilot amongst other toys. The boat owner decided that it would be a great idea to make his first sail a cruise to Maine and along the coast line. My buddy showed him how to use the electronics but cautioned that he should probably try some shorter, simpler day sails to get used to the boat and the electronics. The owner chose poorly. He used as one of his waypoints a rock ledge off the Maine coast and since he had an autopilot he thought it would be a great idea for he and his girlfriend, who also had no sailing experience, to set the autopilot and go below for lunch. The GPS driven autopilot worked flawlessly and drove the boat right up and onto the ledge driving the keel through the bottom of the boat and totaling it. Hillarity continues to this day. AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List
Dennis- (3/21/18 ) 79 Y.O. Dad fell again and couldn't walk for several days (too many beers) after a trip to the ER. Now back in hospital again with low oxygen levels and some pneumonia. Too many years smoking. So pray for my mother who has to put up with her stubborn husband and that hopefully she will be able to care for him when he gets home. joeindc- (3/21/18 ) My father is undergoing a severe COPD episode, including pneumonia and and lung embolism, after breaking his hip. He could use some prayer time so that he stays strong and pulls through this. Detroit Pete- (3/21/18 ) How can I add my wife Sandy to the prayer list? She has pancreatic cancer. ChuckR- (3/22/18 ) My business partner's wife has had a recurrence of bone cancer and on 3/22 is having surgery on both hips. She is a wonderful person, kind and caring. Prayers please for her recovery. -A special prayer for westminsterdogshow, who I personally wronged on Thursday. I mis-characterized our interaction as her "hanging-up on me". That wasn't true. I was arguing a stupid point and she was merely trying to correct me. My own stubbornness led to her disengaging with me --politely, I might add. I was wrong and have apologized to her because she has been nothing but sweet to me. I am sorry, westminsterdogshow. Calling you out on the ONT was childish and stupid. ----------- Please contact me through email, homemadegravy71 at the hooya, as I cannot be around for many of the posts in most threads. Feel free to copy and paste others' prayer requests and send them to me. If I can post in your "voice", I'd like it better. It personalizes the prayer, instead of my shorthand. I'd also like to pray for the people who aren't on this list. For those who don't choose to publicize their trials and maladies, I understand. You won't suffer in silence. A candle will be lit in your name. Please remember the Prayer of St. Francis: http://www.prayerguide.org.uk/stfrancis.htm Corrections, additions and updates can be sent to the email in my nic. Be as specific or as vague as you need. Anonymity is, of course, welcome. -This list will be posted nearly every Sunday, as close to Noon as possible. Let us console others, O Lord. I had to lower the world map because every time one of our friends came over and her son (now about 7) came along, he'd come upstairs and want to have me point out places on the map to tell him about. The Delormes are great for the one thing that GPS software still doesn't do very well - show you what's just beside your route. GPS-enabled pathfinding is great for point-to-point, but if you have to deviate, it really tries to get you back to the route that it thinks is right rather than giving you a parallel detour. The old standalone units used to have an 'avoid interstates' option, but to the extent that it ever really worked, I don't think the smartphone apps even include it any more.

You studied like crazy for the Imperial exam, and sacrificed your childhood on the altar of cram-school, so that you could go to college. Only now, competition is so stiff everyone wants an advanced degree for Walmart greeter, and the major hedge funds are talking about outsourcing foreign investment banking. Plumber? Mill operator? Let's not be crazy here - you're not rich and connected, and no one's worked on the pipes in this city in decades - witness the "accidental fountain". You did a bit of math on credential inflation and discovered that the nation had crossed a tipping point: The credentials required to actually get out of this nuthouse and lead an independent life were expanding faster than you could possibly complete coursework. In short - you're never leaving school. Posted by: ams at March 25, 2018 01:01 PM (FiBra) 480

As are homemade Creme Brûlée and homemade Key Lime Pie. Y'all need to stop eating at the Titty Bar Lunch Buffet. Posted by: naturalfake at March 25, 2018 01:32 PM (E3rQ4) 484

'Escaped Oafs'
There doesn't seem to be a feminine equivalent/ synonym for Oaf...although the word itself appears to be genderless, all the synonyms and common usage are masculine. Oaf'tte? As an 'Ette, I would be down with that. Posted by: Shanks for the memory at March 25, 2018 02:14 PM (TdCQk) 486
Creme Brulee is wonderful. I don't like flan as much but I still like it. If you're a fan of puddings and custards and enjoy their texture, you'll like that stuff. Some people really can't abide the texture.

@160 --
Ha! Well done, Anna. Count me among the map lovers. I started with them when I was reading the original Executioner series in high school, then with Ludlum novels, which involve a lot of scene shifting. A fond memory is of reading an early Saint story that took Simon around Germany. One stop was Leipzig. Tried to find it in my atlas with no luck. Finally looked at East Germany, and there it was. Of course, this story was years before WWII. Felt weird to realize that the world hasn't always been the same, particularly in regard to European political boundaries. That started my interest in prewar films and animation. As for recent reading, I'm nearly done with "The Underboss," a true crime account of Boston's Mafia kingpin, Gennaro Anguilo, who took over a scattered assortment of bookies and melded them into a single syndicate that he ran for 30 years. The FBI nailed him by bugging his headquarters. Unrevealed at the time was how a rival ganglord, James "Whitey" Bulger, conned the bureau by pretending to be an informant. In short, the Irish took sides against the Italians. Boston seems to be a strange area. Posted by: Weak Geek at March 25, 2018 02:38 PM (zT4Y1) 489
Or AI gets dumbed down by years of interacting with millennial idiots. Soon, an old TI graphing calculator is the smartest thing, man or machine, on the planet.
