Caillebotte Paris rain.jpg

Paris Street, Rainy Day
Gustave Caillebotte

The California fires are burning my old stomping grounds, and anyone who has ever been in that area knows how beautiful it is. I don't envy the fire crews though; there are steep hillsides, blind canyons filled with years of underbrush, and winds that whip up out of nowhere. Some of these fires could have been prevented, or at least minimized with a rational fire prevention program. But California makes controlled burning a very difficult proposition, and some of these fires are being fueled by fuel that should have been burned years ago.

The difference between a controlled burn of a few years of accumulated brush, and what we see now is unbelievable. Trees can handle small fires, but when there is enough fuel, the trees themselves burn and burn and burn...

And I'm cutting and pasting myself from the last thread since it got willowed and I wanna yammer on and on about it.

Not too long ago an older woman who has produced numerous documentaries for HBO, received many awards, etc. (forget her name) came out with an autobiography. She included details about all the bosses she slept with as no big deal, that's what a woman does to succeed, amirite?
Posted by: Lizzy at October 10, 2017 09:12 AM (W+vEI)

There's a NYT article about sexual harassment that mentions the chilling effect all of these sexual harassment scandals has on opposite sex (nearly exclusively male boss female underling) work relationships. For once, there are at least mentions that women are hesitant about one on one meetings as well because they don't want people gossiping about them and the women don't want the relationship misconstrued either.

It even includes a quote from a woman who does research in employment matters who says point blank "If you don't want people to judge you when you go out with a senior leader, don't be someone who judges another person."

http://nyti.ms/2wLq5YN

GOOD. It's about time that people start addressing openly that women are the ones who are accusing other women of sleeping their way to the top. Yes, that's personal for me because I faced exactly such false accusations. As a result, I stopped having closed door one on one meetings with male bosses and there is no way that I would ever do a dinner meeting alone with a male boss. Maybe, maybe an out of office lunch meeting one on one if there was need because lunch doesn't have the same implications as dinner. Even that's a risk.

It is nice to see people at least mentioning that the problem isn't only men, it's also lying, gossiping women.

Oh and votermom, yup, it's what is known as the Billy Graham rule at least in Evangelical circles. Never be alone with someone of the opposite sex. That way not only is there no temptation, there are witnesses so no one can make a false accusation. This is a common sense rule, not some kind of craaaaazy crazyness.

31 This work is usually held up as an example of the effects on photography on art, and the effects of modernization on daily urban life. Before photography, a painter would never cut off the human form because of the stature humanity had in art. It was the highest life form and must be treated with holy dignity. Here, however, the man on the extreme right is cut in half. It resembles the movement of life--like the man walked into frame as Caillebotte was snapping the picture. It makes it more down-to-earth and relatable.

Modern life is represented in the arrangement of forms. Notice how the work is unbalanced--there is more "stuff" on the right and a huge empty space on the left. The artist even puts a nice line down the middle to divide the two sides. Also notice how no one is looking at anyone else. Many scholars interpret this work as depicting the "ennui" of Modernity. With the enlarging of Paris' streets, people were displaced, and spread apart. It affected the intimacy of urban existence.

This is a slice-of-life, fleeting moment work, a trait common to the Impressionists, from Monet to Cassatt.

90 Okay, I read the Conservative Treehouse piece on the new, improved timeline and it makes no sense whatsoever. The timeline, not the post.

Here's what does make sense, an alarm goes off that the fire door was opened so a guard goes to check it out. That's SOP.

Guard checks the door, hears drilling in a room, sees a door ajar and looks it because, dude, really, you can't drill to mount the cameras to make that porno. Okay, so far all of that makes sense (I may have added the porno part)

Here's where the New! Improved! 75% More! Narrative goes wheeeeee off the rails.

Shooty boy shoots over 200 rounds into the hallway and doesn't hit other rooms? Maybe that's the layout of the rooms, I have no spatial awareness. No one calls 911 and says holy shit there was a firefiiiiiggghhhhtttt in the room down the hall?

It taking 10 minutes for cops to get up there doesn't really strike me as odd. Even if the cops were in the lobby of the Mandalay at the time, it would take several minutes to respond.

The bit that really doesn't make sense to me is the new sort of claim that he needed another half hour to set up. IIRC, this happened during the last song of the concert. Half an hour later and there wouldn't have been nearly so many people there.

So what was his target? Fish in barrel shooting people as they left?

Maybe he really was going for those fuel tanks?

None of this makes sense. None.

It is getting curioser and curioser. And the timeline had to be known first day. Yet the sheriff was out lauding the security guard as a hero who had saved so many lives.

Saw an interesting detail - shooter had affixed a metal plate on the stairway door with screws to block entrance to his floor.

But the new timeline says he shot through the door (200 rds) and then 6 minutes later opened fire on the crowd. Was the window broken after the guard shooting?

And it reopens the question of why he stopped shooting after ten minutes. He had plenty of ammo and guns.

I still come back to him realizing that whatever it was he was hoping to achieve, he wasn't doing it.

There's at least two plans to consider-- the original plan, and then an improvisation/ Plan B after he decides Plan A won't work.

Depending on how many letters he (unconsciously, I assume) he ran through, that makes it tricky. Assuming he didn't leave a note or manifesto or something. (I thought I read that he did, but no one was saying what it said? Is that false?)

And assuming that manifesto is reasonably honest. If he's-- to use the technical term-- coo-coo bananas, there could be a false manifesto to further some other goal.

DM is reporting that Bill and Hill Clinton have not spoken in months, ever since they had a big blow-out fight over her "What Happened" book, in which she claimed her loss was everybody's fault but hers.

Bill supposedly didn't want her to publish the book, saying it made her look like a weak, whiny loser. Then he offered her some revisions, to try and make the book less awful, but she threw them away without looking at them.

199 The more information that comes out of this massacre, the more I'm convinced we're being lied to and confused on purpose.

Which raises the question, "Why?"

And who stands to gain from the obfuscation?

Actually, that's two questions, but still, something is very fishy about this whole thing. And I get the sinking feeling we the people will never know exactly what happened nor the reason for it. I don't want to think the shooter decided to make the cultural civil war go hot, but given so many crazy events and ridiculous ideas that have surfaced recently (like all white people are inherently racisty racists), I have my doubts about that.

I've been doing some research on a management...failing, I guess, called Social Undermining. One of the features there is keeping your underlings off balance, ill-informed, confused, and squabbling with each other over minor things instead of focused on challenging your authority.

To my admittedly cynical way of thinking, the secrecy and uncertainty surrounding this whole thing is to keep people off balance and wondering what's going on, so as to not to threaten those in power.

This was reported for a while BUT:

- audio of the breach does not have gun fire
- no breachers injured
- breachers not reporting they were shot at nor of any shooting
- he was already dead when they got in there - see above. He might have offed himself well before they went in the room.

And a week later they are saying they got a critical piece of the timeline wrong while they guy sat there for another 10 minutes or so doing nothing with cops outside his door?

This whole story is falling apart and I bet it's because someone big fvcked up the initial response.

Nike of Samothrace was indeed awesome. I wasted time trying to see the Mona Lisa - it's behind glass and there were about 5000 Japanese tourists in front of me. That time would have been better spent looking at their medieval collections.

I'm having trouble resolving this spatially. That said, if the number of bullets through the door is being revised down then the more likely scenario is that he saw the security guard on his camera, took a couple shots at him to get his head down, then turned around and started shooting at the crowd. The security monitor decided not to be a hero and inched his way to safety before calling in, maybe.

That said, we're still deep in the Fog of War stage. I wonder why we're not hearing about a motive but I'm not surprised that the details are still unclear.

Now that could just be a coincidence, but if this wasn't a multiple jihad shooter thing, why did the guy wait any amount of time after he knew he had been seen and they knew without a doubt he was armed? Maybe his accomplice got cold feet?

397 This whole story is falling apart and I bet it's because someone big fvcked up the initial response. Posted by: The Great White Scotsman

yeah, I think from the Sheriff's point of view ... he didn't want to "rat out" the security guy that didn't call in about shots fired. Said he was traumatized.

But if cops did show up sometime after the sixteen minutes of shots fired (initial through the door, 6 minutes to break glass and prep a little, ten minutes firing on crowd) ... then maybe reasonable to not breach and cause an explosion that could kill more (cleared other rooms).

Still leaves question of why Paddock stopped shooting ... shoulder/hand got sore, moment of remorse, guns all jammed? Maybe he still had the cameras out and saw cops in the hall, ended it.

Plan to escape? If security guy doesn't happen by, he fires for ten minutes, tries to escape, blows up car by firing on it? enough diversion with people running that he escapes into the night? Sounds unlikely he could get out of the room after firing that long, but maybe he had estimated response time.

"And, 200 rounds in a constricted hotel hallway is nuts. All those rooms
must have been penetrated. Was the floor empty? It seems likely
others would have been wounded."

The door shot through was at the end of a long hallway and facing down the hallway so it's unlikely that any bullets penetrated other rooms. Hotel walls usually being concrete for sound abrasion and fireproofing. Hotel doors are also very solid for the same reasons.

The way it reads is that the guard was hit while in the room as he walked in on, and ran away from, Paddock drilling a hole in the door to the other suite, probably for another camera. Shots would have been directed toward the guard as he ran away.

Still there are so many questions as everything doesn't make much sense, even sense for a twisted mind like Paddock.

Thank you chi Town. At no time have the police said he shot 200 rounds in the hallway. This is like the hands up don't shoot meme that was spread about Michael Brown.

What was said yesterday was that the security guard walked into Paddock's room because the door was ajar and he could hear drilling. He had arrived on the floor to check a fire exit door alarm that had gone off ( that doesn't mean their was a siren with it the security center in the hotel may have received the warning.) and Paddock turned around, saw him, drew a weapon and shot him in the leg. The guard ran out of the room into the hallway and Paddock shut and locked the door, the police believe he panicked as he had been interrupted in his preparations, and commenced to breaking out the windows and firing on the crowd. That would have taken him several minutes just the break out the windows and set up his rifles.

I also remember the sheriff saying at either second or third press conference that he wanted to emphasize that he was trying to give the best information he had at the time, but that undoubtedly as time went on , the information would change, as it always does in these events.

Right - but you were backing up chi-town jerry's questioning of where that story - the 200 rds fired through the door at the security guard - came from, pointing to yesterdays press conference. But it wasn't just made up - the sheriff himself said it. And despite his assertion that this is some minor change in the facts as reported - no it isn't.

Remember, Lombardo lionizes the security guard as a hero who saved many lives by interrupting the shooting. And oh, btw, the cops were at the shooter's door within a minute of the security guard.

Oh, wait, no they weren't.

I didn't believe any of the above reporting in the early days of
this situation anymore than I believe the conspiracy stories floating
across the net. As Fox was saying that the guard was shot through the
door, they were showing a photo of the entry door with police tape all
over it and I even paused the video and looked at the door , which had
NO bullet holes in it. 200 rounds, good lord, the door would have been
nothing but holes, the walls and floors of the hallway would have been
shredded along with the room service cart still parked in the hallway
with it's still white tablecloth .

.
.
.But regardless of those pictures, the County Sheriff said in a press conference that paddock had fired 200 rounds through the hotel room door and he has never retracted that statement that I can find.

A real life example.

You're working on a project at your job.

You have no real information on how it will turn out yet.

Your boss asks you for details you do not have.

Do you:

1. Say you do not have details
2. Make up details and revise later if he asks?

The MSM makes up things to get ratings, which drives ad rates.

However, shouldn't we trust law enforcement not to do so? There seems to be no penalty in saying "I don't know yet." Or "the investigation is ongoing."

They are out and out lying.

Would your boss be OK with you lying about things at work? If not, why should the public be OK with law enforcement lying?

481 Odd that Manhattan Media is outraged and aghast that actresses were ruffled up a bit by Harvey but were okay when Monica was ruffled up by Billy. I'm starting to think maybe Manhattan Media is anti-Semitic.

An alternate explanation is that the Dems of the day were trying to court a Clintonesque sub-variety of Bubba in the traditional patronizing way at the time. Much as if he were black baptist or muslim, "oh, you know those people are just like that".

In that framework, Bill doesn't fit in as an Elevated Elite to be held to a higher standard by the Urbane Pefected Lefty, at least so long as convenient. He is (or at least was at the time) a mascot for pandered class of sub-person.

Blaster, I'll admit, I haven't watched every single press conference with the LV PD. Out of all the ones I have watched, I have not heard the police state anything about 200 rounds fired in the hallway.

This is the biggest problem with 24/7 news reporting. Police, etc. are forced to have press conferences when they don't even know what happened. and they are peppered with questions to answer and to wrap up the case like an episode of Castle or CSI in the hour.

If he said it, well ok, I'm having a hard time understanding how any police officer, let alone the sheriff, would walk down the hallway of a hotel and claim someone shot 200 rounds when it's obvious there's little to no damage. Unless he didn't count on the photos being leaked to the press.

This also goes to the timeline. If the guard spotted Paddock putting up a plate for a camera, chased him into the room, got shot, and ran back out, then maybe the shots in the door were meant to keep the guard on the ground for a spell while Paddock prepared his shooting position. The guard took a while to get to cover and report in, then the shooting at the crowd started.

This happens in the real world too. It's long been noted that sexual harassment is in the eye of the beholder. Young , handsome, studly guys can get away with all kinds of things trying to pick-up female co-workers that ugly or creepy guys would get fired for.....

536 514 the weird thing about the French... French and the Germans get along just great

A lot of people also don't realize that there are a good number of ethnic Franks in Germany, itself. German-speaking, but with a rolled R and other tics being common.

Yep. Hugenots who left after Louis XIV tore up the Edict of Nantes in 1685. They mostly settled in the east IIRC. The last Prime Minister of the GDR (and the only one elected democratically), Lothar De Maiziere, is one of them.

Yeah, that's another point-- the French and Germans diverged comparatively recently, and that's largely linguistic.

Defining European ethnicities is a fool's errand at this point. 500 years ago, sure, probably, but now? No way. And then there's places like Sicily.

540 481 Odd that Manhattan Media is outraged and aghast that actresses were ruffled up a bit by Harvey but were okay when Monica was ruffled up by Billy. I'm starting to think maybe Manhattan Media is anti-Semitic.
_________________

They probably are, but in Bill's defense (yuck), Monica wanted the sexual contact with him. She went looking for it, and continually schemed to put herself in his presence and have more of it. It wasn't a case of it being forced on her.

It was still wrong, as Clinton was in a position of authority over her, not to mention being twice her age and married, but not quite the same as Weinstein forcing young women to have unwanted sexual contact with him in order to get or keep Hollywood jobs.

541 Ok, now you've convinced me. The only photos I had seen of the door were on Fox and I believe on either Conservative Treehouse or Zero Hedge and it only showed the closed door, not the entire entrance door. I have never seen the above photo.

So I stand corrected.
Posted by: Jen the original at October 10, 2017 11:27 AM (q8GYT)

Note that photo is from Conservative Treehouse, but I first saw it on Daily Mail on Tuesday after the shooting.

Thing is, while there are bullet holes in that door, if there are another 190 shot at it, then it wold just be splinters. Lombardo said that the 200 rounds thing was from his visible inspection - he said he saw evidence of that.

Reporting is now that security guard entered the suite because the door was open and was shot. He entered when shooter was drilling hole in the door to the adjoining room - according to current reports that we have no more reason to believe than previous ones, I guess. It seems possible that the door was all the way open and that the shooter opened fire from the side of the suite where that door he was drilling into was - that the bullets would have gone into the wall - see the layout of the hotel room - and if they went through the wall, it was the stairwell behind it.

But at this point, this is guessing based on reporting that we cannot be confident of to begin with.

Except cooking. And to their credit, the French did try to invade England with sauces, to no avail. How does that old saw go? The best tour of Europe you could ever have would be organized by the Germans, with an Italian food director, a Spanish activity coach, a French sommelier and an English tour guide. Something like that. I've heard it a few different ways.

Willow'd, I know, but one of the early Dilbert books had these rules of public displays of affection:

Attractive people can kiss. Normal/average-looking people can hold hands.

The rest of you better not try anything at all.

Actually here's the weird thing about the French - except for that part about them all wanting to kill each other every 50 years or so, the French and the Germans get along just great. That's why the big lie was that "everyone" was in the Resistance during WW2 - no they weren't, only a tiny minority were. Most thought Vichy was just fine and that the Germans were at least doing a pretty good job of getting rid of all of those annoying jews.

Do a google maps of Mandala Bay. Then do a 3d view from the east. Glass from those windows would fall on a roof top at ground floor. About 150 feet from the valet are, which has its own overhead cover.

Unlikely they would hear the impact. Not possible they would get showered with glass shards.

560 Some horse's a$$ in Novato (who shall remain nameless) came up with, and pushed it through, the brilliant idea of not letting people build on hill tops. So now there are plots of dry tinder surrounded by houses. I loved on the side of one of those hills. If a house had been built on it, over time, they'd've irritated/sprinklered their lawn, making it less of a fire hazard. But no, preserving Hilltop fire hazards are much more Earth friendly.
