Suppressors, Death Squads And Hearing Loss: Larry Correia "Fisks" An Attack On Guns

There are innumerable examples of the stunning ignorance, laziness and blind obeisance to liberal orthodoxy among the media when it comes to guns. Among the worst excesses of stupidity are any mention of full-auto, and today's topic: suppressors.

Here is Larry Correia knocking the snot out of "author Elizabeth Moon, who is an extremely good science fiction writer, but who apparently knows jack shit about guns. Which is kind of sad, since she was a Marine."

He is a witty and very caustic writer, which I like very much. And even though he has a bad case of TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome), he is worth a read.

An Opinion on Suppressors and the Hearing Protection Act

Today’s topic is suppressors, also known as silencers, which are basically car mufflers but for guns. Some folks are having a giant hyperbolic come apart because Congress is thinking about making suppressors easier for people to own. Note, they are already perfectly legal to own, but the process to get one is convoluted and stupid. This law would just get rid of the convoluted and stupid part.

There are lots of excerpt-worthy paragraphs, so just read the his post and chuckle.

But...he made a mistake. A pretty basic one, so whoever identifies and corrects the mistake gets a Platinum membership with Troll-B-GonTM and ampersand utility.

I can't believe Elizabeth Moon made such an offensive statement. We have several of her books here in paperback that my wife bought. I thought they were pretty good. I have even considered getting a few of them on the Kindle since I can no longer read paperbacks.

But that is out of the question now even though I could give a shit about suppressors.

Posted by: Hairyback Guy at October 08, 2017 12:17 PM (nUkMr)

With the exception of full-auto and explosives, NFA is pretty much dead anyway. Short barrel rifles are now effectively legal (rifle caliber pistols with "arm braces"), various work-arounds for short barrel, pistolgrip shotguns, suppressor parts and kits are available to build them (usually with the end cap being un-drilled to avoid violating NFA).

I'd prefer to do away with NFA in it's entirety, but I can live with an intermediate goal of getting rid of the restrictions on SBR, SBS, and suppressors. Which would cut a huge amount of the workload for NFA regulation, making full-auto permit processing MUCH faster.

Assuming of course that BATFEIEIO didn't just drag their feet because they're a bunch of dicks.

Posted by: J at October 08, 2017 12:58 PM (zqhz1)

Actually a supersonic bullet as it passes you sounds much like a ricochet. The "boom" heard out of a gun barrel is the boom of a detonation that has been compressed until the bullet exits the barrel.

129 I never gave any thought to suppressors because I have reduced hearing already (it's hereditary, a gift from Dad's side of the family) and won't shoot a 22 short without hearing protection. 133 The amount of heat you could generate by sound alone is trivial compared to the amount of heat generated by the combustion of the powder and the compression of the hot gases. (I suppose you also get a little heat from friction in the barrel, but probably not much, relatively speaking).

Much more significant in the issue of heating up the suppressor is that the heated gas gets trapped in the baffles, rather than dissipated into the surrounding air.

Posted by: Muldoon at October 08, 2017 01:17 PM (wPiJc)

134 "It is a mistake of degree, because the sound will indeed heat the suppressor. Not as much as the hot gas, but sound is energy." cbd

I'm guessing the sound is caused by the rapid expansion of the gases outside the barrel. So the suppressor absorbs those gases BEFORE the sound is made. The remainder that escapes makes the sound.

I'm impressed with those 22 silencers that are pretty silent. I definitely want one, but need a new 22 with a threaded barrel, plus for the bill to pass.

Silencers work the same way car mufflers work. They reflect the sound waves in a manner that causes them to cancel each other out. IOW if you direct two similar frequency sound waves at each other 180 degrees out of phase they will cancel each other out. The trick is getting them to do that, which is why silencers do not do a LOT of silencing. (contrary to the movies and TV)

What I'm saying is that a single, short, explosive sound wave is not a significant contributor to the heating of a suppressor compared to the heat energy of the combusted gases. If it's the sound causing the heat, why would the barrel of a gun heat up when you fire it?

Since the sound is going out the end of the barrel with all of its sonic energy still in the form of sound, the barrel should not heat up.

From a tightwad's perspective: I shoot cheap stuff in my cheap Frankenstein AR, and good stuff in my good store-bought AR.

I'm probably not a good enough shot to really know if the barrel is reducing my accuracy by X%, either, so the cheap AR will likely be fine for the rest of my shooting life.

I wouldn't lose a whole lot of sleep over it. I'm referring specifically to long range match accuracy degrading in a custom rifle after about 800 rounds. I've gotten as much as 1200 rounds but you really don't want them to go tits-up during a match, and when they go, the go really fast. Anyhow, I generally shoot decent quality commercial jacketed rounds in my regular rifles, but wouldn't worry about some occasional bi-metal or steel case rounds. I bought several thousand rounds of rooskie ammo like that a few years back in 7.62x39.
Congrats on the new rifle!!

Posted by: Cloyd Freud, Unemployed at October 08, 2017 01:16 PM (398bZ)

There's probably something to that, because the bi-metal is definitely harder than the normal gilding metal in the more expensive bullets. However, the difference is so small that it's effectively nil. And the cheap barrel replacement thing for ARs takes care of that.

The one area where bi-metal can be more of a problem is with causing sparks downrange. It CAN cause wildfires, and has done so from time to time. Many ranges, especially in the West, will not let you use magnetic bullets because of that.

Bi-metal bullets often means Russian/Ukranian manufacture, which means mild steel cases. There's quite the debate about those in the AR system, where the fairly straight sides of the 5.56 case combined with the steel construction will supposedly contribute to increased chance of head separations. I don't know if it's true, but that's the debate.

There is controversy about this. There are also other factors at work, the precise chambering (esp. 5.56 vs .223, and using one in the other), whether the chamber was reamed correctly to spec, lining (chrome, melonite, etc.). Bullet weight and barrel twist probably also play into it.

My bottom line is, barrels are (relatively, see Novoski) cheap. Don't worry about it. If you get into it, chambering, length, gas-block placement, and most likely twist will determine if you need/want a different barrel.

Posted by: Duncanthrax at October 08, 2017 01:37 PM (DMUuz)

194 I am pretty certain that Correia is aware of the constancy of gravity regardless of bullet velocity. I would think that he means the slope of the descent line is faster - drops more per unit distance, not per unit time.

So that means my identification of reasoning with a liberal as the basic error is correct and first!

I had a friend in high school, lived on a farm, and his dad was a gun dealer. We were shooting some of their weapons at a sheet of plywood out in woods behind hte house. I don't recall how far it was, seemed like a long way away. We shot .22 and it would go bang...beat...beat...thwack. Then he pulled out an XP100 pistol in .221 Fireball (an aptly named round - from the side the fireball from the barrel was impressive) and it would go bangthwack.

Now, I exclusively shoot brass-cased XM193 (or my own near M193 velocity reloads). But it's not because of concerns over the bi-metal bullets or steel cases. Probably depends on your jurisdiction. Putting a barrel that is threaded such that it can accept a suppressor/compensator/flash hider in your semi-auto pistol with a detachable magazine in CA makes it a banned Assault Weapon. I think they can charge that as a felony, not sure.

263 An oil filter does indeed make an effective suppressor. Another option is a lawn mower engine muffler.

Yet if you make a metal adapter, with one side an inside threaded piece threaded to mate with your barrel, and the other side outside threaded to mate with said muffler/oil filter, that chunk of metal now becomes a Class 3 device. Possession of which without the $200 fee, serial #, and all associated paperwork is a felony.

Also, they attack dogs on sight as they identify them as wolves, an enemy to the young ones. People walking dogs can have major problems. They'll walk right through towns too, the older ones aren't worried about anything.

They are faster than you would think by looking at them.
And if you hit one with a vehicle, it can take out the roof posts and slice the entire roof (and your head) off.

It is a way to deal with fluctuations in ammo and component availability, whether caused by the markets or government restrictions. And it is fun. When the cost of 22lr ammo went sky high, I could reload 45 acp, 38 specials and 32 longs a lot cheaper and continue shooting.

I maintain a good supply of commercial ammo for defensive purposes and practice with it. The rest of my shooting is with reloads and black powder.

One of the reasons, among many, I prefer revolvers, bolt action rifles and single shots over non-semi auto guns is because they are more versatile as to handling reloads.

Speaking of deer... I bought some Milorganite recently. It smells like shit, because it's basically dehydrated shit, that once hydrated smells like actual shit. But it makes lawns glow neon green.

Anyway, talk about government intervention, a lot of people discovered that deer don't like the smell of human shit like Milorganite and the deer stay away. Milorganite wanted to advertise this feature, but some government agency told them to spend millions on official research before they could say, 'repels deer' on the label. They chose not to.

"As those expanding gasses from the burning gun powder escape the muzzle, instead of flying outward to bombard those delicate little hairs in your ears, the gasses are trapped in a can screwed onto the end."

The gasses aren't really trapped, as in cannot escape, but rather expand into the can and escape more slowly instead of violently. The slower escape of gasses reduces the noise.

CORRECTION: CBS reporter clarifies on saying Kaepernick would stand for anthem, says they didn't discuss issue.

On a similar note VP Pence and his wife walked out of the Colts game after 15-20 Fag Francisco players knelt during the anthem. No one on the Colts did. "I left today's Colts game because President Trump and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem."

439 The guy does go on; but then there is a lot to fisk. Re silencers or suppressors; it's true you can make one out of an oil filter. It's also true that they are easy for an amateur machinist to make. I took some machine shop classes down at the local community college when I retired. I wanted to be able to make parts for some of my model airplanes. The instructors told the students (most of them 40 or 45 years younger than me), "Don't be making gun suppressors. We know what they look like--so don't even try."

As the writer says, it ain't rocket science to make a suppressor. If a 19 year old barely literate high school graduate (in community college for remedial English and math courses) can design one, then so could your maiden Aunt Matilda.

It's a lot of fun, many different types of weapons with three different modes of play.

Available weapons range from Glock's to MP5's to full on assault rifles like the AK-47. Modes of play are simple bulls-eye targets, friend or foe ranges, and zombie attack ranges. Main difference between the friend or foe and zombie are the design of the target cutout and that there are no friendly zombies. Plus the zombie targets are constantly moving towards you.

Anyway...

My question has to do with the affect of suppressors on accuracy. In this game, which sells itself as being realistic, suppressors are sold in the accessories store as an aid to stability. Is this a thing? Are guns more accurate if they have a suppressor screwed on the end of the barrel?

484 The only really super effective suppressor I have seen has been an integral unit on a bolt action 22 rifle.

Subsonic round, so it didn't even have the 'crack' to it.

Loudest noise was the bullet hitting the wood backstop.

On the off chance that anyone's still reading this thread, they don't really affect velocity or accuracy either way shot-to-shot. Vidya games sometimes neuter suppressed weapons' stats, as a game balancing mechanic. It's possible that the added mass would make it more stable getting back on target for the next shot, I guess, and dampen muzzle rise.

488 38 Wouldn't a suppressor melt down into a slag of molten metal if used with a gun firing at bump stock type rates? How about even normal semi-auto rates?

I think I will do some googling on this..

Nope.

490 A suppressor will get really hot but I can't imagine them getting hot enough to deform even. They're practically designed to vent heat well.

492 Thanks for the reply. I'm not really new to guns in general. I grew up in a place and time where a rifle in the school parking lot simply meant it was deer season, but I've no experience with suppressors.

My experience with the game I mentioned is that it is reliably accurate as far as the hand guns are concerned but doesn't really hold up with long guns. In game I generally treat everything as a pistol since trying to hold a virtual rifle as it should be held is an exercise in futility. The AK shoots just fine as a long barrelled pistol, where I'm certain that if I tried that stunt in RL I would get laughed off the range. (or expelled from the range, take your pick.)

One thing I do like about it is that it really drives home the inefficiency of fully automatic fire. Ammo is free and endless but reloads are a thing and running your magazine dry in the face of a zombie attack is a bad thing indeed.

Titanium suppressors will handle full auto rates of fire. They do not vent well as the idea is to capture and disrupt expanding propellant gas so as to lower noise profile or firing point signature. I have destructive tested during R&D for our quick detach suppressors 500 rds in less than 3 minutes and the rifle will fail not the suppressor.

It can be done, but it takes dedication, commitment, and ~450 rounds sustained fire without a break.

Full auto works when clearing rooms. Can't think of any other instance where it offers significant advantages over more selective semiautomatic fire.

499 I have zero real world experience with automatic weapons. Shooting the ones available in game is extremely fun but the accuracy sucks. Weapons that are select fire are much more accurate with semi-auto aimed shots and typically have larger magazines so work well in both the timed friend/foe galleries and the zombie attack scenarios since reloads don't happen as often.

Should note that this game is 'early access' which means beta and there are bugs. For one, while weapons with a selector switch, including those that are just fire/safe, have working switches there is nothing to tell you how to activate said switch. I was using a Beretta M9 on one run, doing well, did a mag swap and the gun starting going click-click-click. An arrow pointed to the safety telling me I needed to switch back to fire but didn't tell me HOW. I failed that run because I couldn't shoot anymore. Finally figured it out after much trial and error.

Also, you can buy extended magazines and such in the accessories store. You earn money completing ranges and spend it on unlocking new guns and on accessories for guns you have. I have one pistol in game, another M9, that I've tricked out with flashlight, two, count'em, two, lasers, a suppressor, and a dual snail 100rnd magazine. It's a hilarious looking piece of ordnance which would work about as well as a brick in RL but it worked clearing that last bastard of a level in the zombie ladder that I kept failing because I was getting swamped during reloads.

________

It can be. Anything can be interesting or uninteresting. It's how it's presented and received.

Lately, the NFL has been presented in a certain way which has noting to do with sports. This presentation has come at the expense of the interesting elements. It's a shame.

For myself, I'm not boycotting the NFL for any moral reason. I'm not following it because it's all about the national anthem and taking the knee, and it all bores me.

501 414 Slow bullets drop at the same rate as fast bullets.

Scientifically yes, but in terms of observation, a slow bullet falls to the ground long before a fast bullet does, in terms of distance. Hence: fall faster. He's not wrong, he's just using terms imprecisely.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at October 08, 2017 03:45 PM (TZPec)

The rate is unit1 per unit2.

Assuming rate is unit height / unit time is obtusely reading something into his statement when in context it is clearly unit height / unit distance traveled.

I am pretty certain that Correia is aware of the constancy of gravity
regardless of bullet velocity. I would think that he means the slope of
the descent line is faster - drops more per unit distance, not per unit
time.

So that means my identification of reasoning with a liberal as the basic error is correct and first!

I had a friend in high school, lived on a farm, and his dad was a
gun dealer. We were shooting some of their weapons at a sheet of
plywood out in woods behind hte house. I don't recall how far it was,
seemed like a long way away. We shot .22 and it would go
bang...beat...beat...thwack. Then he pulled out an XP100 pistol in .221
Fireball (an aptly named round - from the side the fireball from the
barrel was impressive) and it would go bangthwack

Impressive indeed. If you can get your firearm to go bangthwack, the ladies talk it up between themselves the next day.
