Will Tonight End the NFL Kneeling Protests?

Here's how I see this going down: The owners tell the players, "My God, you cannot kneel for the flag in the wake of mass shooting, possibly with some terroristic intent." So the players don't. Even the most hyperpoliticized leftwing BAMN asshole will presumably see the sense in taking a break from pissing on the flag for one night.

And then they can't on Thursday or Sunday, either. I mean, this is not a one-day story.

And then quietly, the owners instruct the players that they may get as political as they like on Twitter or Instagram, but when on the field, they'll be held to the letter of the rulebook as far as standing for the flag.

I think that might happen.

I also think it won't matter much. You know, breaking up with a sports league is like breaking up with a person: One minute, you're conflicted, and not sure you could ever really get on without them. The next minute, you decide, and that decision is now firm, and you can't even imagine why you took so long to do it.

(Actually, in my experience, it's women who are really good at this -- the total break, the binary on-off switch, the hard goodbye -- but bear in mind, that's my experience. You have to keep in mind, women feel incredibly empowered and liberated to be rid of me.)

Via Instapundit, two stories about the NFL, because man, that is more fun to talk about than the carnage in Las Vegas:

CNN's Silverback Gorilla, the grunting John King, says NFL owners have data that the anthem protests are in fact hurting the league.

"NFL owners so far siding with their players for their right to free speech, but they're also keeping close tabs on the financial impact and the public relations impact of this confrontation," King said.

He went on to say that the NFL owners have research "clearly showing the president is right" when he claims the national anthem protests are one factor in TV ratings dropping.

"Since the president weighed in, the owners are now dealing with a surge in ticket holder requests for refunds," King said.

Meanwhile, Derek Hunter writes about the slow death of the NFL.

Since I wasn’t a rabid fan the NFL won’t really notice that I’m gone. But I’m not alone. Through my radio show, social media, and life I have heard from scores of people who are diehard fans, and they’re done too.

More importantly for the NFL and the players, they’re beyond angry. Lifelong fans feel betrayed. Anger fades with time, but the sting of betrayal lingers.

...

The damage to the NFL began when Commissioner Roger Goodell chose to side with left-wing activists over the game in the hope of placating them and absolving himself from his failures to properly address domestic violence by some players.

...

It has evolved from an organization that fined Jim McMahon for writing messages on his headbands to one that ignored players perpetuating the lie of
"hands up, don't shoot." From blocking the Dallas Cowboys from honoring five police officers who were murdered by a militant racist inspired by anti-police activists to ignoring Colin Kaepernick wearing socks portraying police as pigs.

It seemed like a league held hostage by Kaepernick’s racism; in fear of being called racist itself. Now it's an enabler of ignorance.

...

There could not have been a worse target for a protest than the national anthem in a sport that has marinated itself in patriotism. Sure, it was paid for [link to article noting that the NFL is paid for its military boosterism] -- nothing in the NFL is free – but they cashed the checks.

When Kaepernick chose to protest during the national anthem all people saw was a protest of the national anthem. That Goodell and his highly paid PR team didn't recognize this fact and squash it like they did DeAngelo Williams’ desire to pay tribute to his late mother by wearing pink to raise breast cancer awareness is a testament to the fear and desire for self-preservation that has marked his tenure.

People only keep on doing something that takes a lot of time, money, or effort if they believe they are getting direct and indirect benefits out of it. Few NFL fans get direct benefits out of watching the games-- obviously all fans want "their" teams to have 11+ wins in a season and make the playoffs (and win at least one game in the playoffs), and obviously, most fans cannot have that. At best, only the fans of four to six clubs feel really satisfied at the end of a season.

That's just the nature of the thing -- 32 teams in a three-quarter-year tournament to determine one single champion must, necessarily, leave a lot of fans disappointed. Obviously you just can't hand out Participation Trophies for Every Team!!! to make fans feel good about watching a team that goes 5-11.

So there's a built-in hard limit to how many fans any sporting league can really please throughout every year.

But you can keep enjoying the NFL if you feel it's providing you with indirect secondary benefits. The idea that this is a national ritual of sorts, a kind of secular communion, something connecting brother with brother, father with son, wife with husband. The idea that this is a truly American thing, something untainted and pure. Something above and outside our daily burdens and bothers, and even something, despite the violence, innocent. Something kids can watch that adults can enjoy even more.

Something that makes us better -- more American -- by watching it.

Obviously you can't have that secondary indirect benefit when you have a bunch of guys protesting the flag itself.

And then, as the league lets people violate the rulebook to protest the flag, it gets harder to ignore the players who rough up their wives and girlfriends, or even straight-up knock them out, and then skate with minor penalties.

The NFL has injected a lot of grimy, ugly reality into a thing we were turning to precisely because we were looking for a four-hour break from reality.

If those in the Escapism Business are no longer willing to provide escape -- if they feel that is now beneath them -- then what is the point of them?

11 It's not a question of their kneeling; it's a question of their petulance. There have already been games where the players didn't kneel - did you see their petulant little faces? Did you see the anger on their faces, like scolded brats?

This isn't about their actions; it's about their attitudes. It's about their need for MORE attention, because being a hyper-paid athlete isn't enough.

They are Millennials. They are entitled.

And they are OUTRAGED if you say this to them.

Yep. This is a *great* chance to show that their previous actions were just a misguided plea for national unity (no, I don't actually believe that for a minute) and to say that this is a moment to hold to the traditions that have brought us together in the past. And then *never* speak of the kneeling again and pretend it never happened.

And the chances of their doing this are probably zero.

Then you add all the protest bullshit on top? No thanks, much better ways to spend a Sunday, especially one as nice as yesterday.

I keep reading the league has a shot of the game called "All 22," a long distance shot showing all 22 players at once.

They use these films for scouting plays and just as historical documents and such.

But they won't let anyone see the All 22 footage. I hear the reason is that when you're far back from the field and have a high vantage, you can see that there are really only six plays teams run (and then add in different receiver routes).

Anyway, the idea is when you see the game from the All 22 POV it looks pretty boring and repetitive.

So they won't let people see it.

Now, I don't know if this is true, and I realize that someone high up in the 3rd level at the endzone would have an All 22 perspective. But maybe just the excitement of being there overcomes seeing the All 22 repetitiveness.

Be sure to use your Samsung Galaxy quest VR II XBA with the Verizon network to keep up to date on all the latest action, scores, and news for your favorite team while enjoying the crisp taste of Coke. It's the perfect thing to quaff when focusing on our shared value of diversity and inclusion.

Best, your corporate overlords.

PS...when the NFL players and coaches thank you for being the best fans on earth, we don't mean white people or cops. Or republicans, if there are any of you fuckers that don't fit into those two aforementioned categories.

PS II. be sure to test drive an audi and get a commemorative NFL pink commemorative bobblehead to honor our female fans, who by the way, should know we got some girl refs now. It's like watching a dog playing a piano!

81 I think that the Owners' nightmare scenario was always enforcing the league's rule with regard to the anthem leading to forfeiture of games when 60+% of any given team refused to play. I think they saw that as the greater threat to the NFL than a spate of "protests" about which they could spin (Unity! Togetherness!) and gaslight the public.

I don't think they perceived that the threat to "the shield" could emerge from the fan/spectator side and now they're stuck between a rock and a hard place.

I think overall the owners are probably happy with Goodell (they keep paying him obscene amounts of money) but he really mishandled this one big time and now the league is presented with an existential crisis. The off-season would have been a good time to explain to the players what the league's brand is (patriotism, toughness, escapism) and how the "protests" endanger the brand, and in turn their livelihoods.

I think they should take a double knee, turn to their left, and do a butt humping daisy chain for a couple of minutes. Let their TRUE feelings out, since, purportedly, about 25% of the NFL either swings both ways or fully enjoys their time in the showers with manly men...

Posted by: In Vino Veritits at October 02, 2017 02:47 PM (t3kPl)

85 It would be really easy for the players to get out of this while saving face. The players' association could release a statement saying that while the players remain concerned about their social justice causes, they feel that they've sufficiently made their point, and will resume standing for the anthem.

138 The damage to the NFL began when Commissioner Roger Goodell chose to side with left-wing activists over the game...

++++

This. And, this also reveals the obvious way for the NFL to start the process of reconnecting with its disaffected former fans.

Scapegoat Goodell. He has lost sight of his primary mission: providing entertainment to the fans of pro football.

Fire Goodell.
Hire a replacement that explicitly disavows Goodell's management and promises to respect the NFL's fans.
Then do that. No politics on the field. No kneeling, no linking arms. No during the anthem, not before the anthem, not after the anthem. None of it.
Players can do politics off the field and out of uniform, where fans can either cheer them on or ignore them; all while still having the option to watch games without the bullshit.

The foolish decisions of some owners to join these protests on the field has complicated this strategy, but it is still their best way forward.

----------------------------
Women are more fickle --- La donna e mobile! But that is because they are more naturally monogamous. They can only focus on one man at a time. So as soon as they have another prospect, they can easily break completely with the current guy.

Men are more possessive. They want to hold on to what they've got, even if they have other prospects. Look at OJ, obsessing over Nicole when he has a gorgeous fiancee at his side.

This is why adultery by the female is far more destabilizing to the intact family. The female will naturally want to settle on her new love alone. The male is apt to want to keep BOTH women. As the country song said, he wants to have his Kate and Edith too.

Posted by: Hikaru at October 02, 2017 02:58 PM (WDCYi)

196 The League has just made one shitty decision after another.

The ever-encroaching reality TV vibe to football (not necessarily the NFL's fault, this is more sports media) with TMZ videos and arrests and suspensions for spanking kids and commentators talking about that all day instead of the game.

The increasingly absurd length of time during the actual game spent on commercial breaks and things other than game play.

The instant replays that take forever.

The rules changes that make the game "safer" (also seem to allow for more commercial breaks.)

The way they handled the whole concussion thing (rock and hard place there, though, so I can't wholly blame anyone).

The way the whole deflategate thing was handled.

And of course, the sometimes-politics-is-banned, sometimes-its-encouraged thing. Which I think was really just the final straw for a lot of people.

I dont know, just some observations. I'm far from a loyal NFL fan. Just an occasional watcher surrounded by die-hard NFL nuts.

I think that women will also be done once they have had enough. If a woman is in a relationship when the man cheats and cheats and cheats, eventually she will be done, and will end it, thoroughly and completely. It may take a long time getting there, but when she is done, she is done.

235 Look at the Colts' statement for the "why" of the "protests".

Mostly incoherent eye-rolling SJWbabble - that is, the sort of thing one hears everywhere, all the time, from every direction, in America, for years now.

Mythology, stupidity, avoidance. All in the service of racial grievance, i.e., a form of racism. A very pathological form, which causes massive systemic and seemingly permanent disability.

But the pathology is hardly limited to the "communities" of self-designated martyrs. A society where the concept of "disparate impact" can even be voiced without ridicule and marginalization is pretty far gone.

Nothing so noble on the part of the owners ... they fear backlash if owners/coaches demand players stand for the anthem, and use (fake) "free speech" rights as an excuse.

They want "team unity" supposedly, another excuse, since they don't want team unity when players want to honor cops killed by BLM. And how is it "team unity" to have one or two not standing while all others stand? Certain preferred groups are "feared".

Although I have been watching less and less nfl over time, the one statistic I read about 11 or 12 minutes of actual action over 4 hours really is the realization that I will rarely watch ever again. Those 11 minutes could be reduced to a half hour of highlights if I actually cared.

312 Aside from the left hating football for its emphasis on masculine virtues (strength, aggression, competitiveness, etc.), could it be they also hate it because it breaks down racial barriers? You have little white kids wearing the jerseys of their favorite players who are often black, and looking up to them as heroes. And the left wishes to promote divisiveness.

I don't know, but I will say this -- our govt parses words very carefully when a guy named Mohammed Mohammed kills someone and says ALLAHU AKBAR!!.

Unless they have an order originating from Syria telling him what to do, they don't classify it as "having a nexus to foreign terrorism." At least not for a long time before it's off the front pages.

See: Orlando Pulse shooter, San Bernardino couple, Major Hassan, etc. etc.

I think it's more a matter of women being better at dissembling and credibly pretending that everything is just fine and peachy while working through the decision to dump you so that when they announce it you're taken utterly by surprise. They've already worked through the emotions and retconned the good times together into some series of negative experiences/illusions (I was fooled about who he was and I never really loved him!).

372 Imagine since youth football that you've been told you're better and more special than everyone else because you have a faster 40 time, can throw a football 80 yards, have the strength of Hercules and are abnormally aggressive.

You get a college scholarship, get a "degree" in underwater basket weaving or whatever crib major football programs steer their players into to ensure they're eligible. They're athletes first, students second. You get worshiped by thousands of fans.

You might be a drug user. A violent criminal. A rapist. Or a domestic abuser, all of which can be washed away if you're toting the rock on Saturdays and making sure your school keeps the checks rolling in when they make a bowl game. The boosters and the coach can lobby on your behalf and make sure that pesky arrest goes away, when any other student would be tossed in jail or even kicked out school.

Fast forward a few years. You get to play your violent game professionally after being drafted to wear the "shield," with the term professional used loosely. You make millions and again, you're told perpetually how special and great you really are.

Is it any wonder that those folks act the way they do, perpetually spoiled? They have no idea of the sacrifices required to keep that flag flying, both in the past and in the present. All they can rail about is "police brutality" or "inequality."

My wife and I were at a restaurant and we listened to the inane, feeble ramblings of these halfwit ex-jocks ESPN hires to talk about a child's violent game for hours at a time. They kept talking about inequality without knowing that it comes from Marxism, which would definitely put them out of a job.

Ask those emigre Cuban baseball players what it's like playing for the state-run league, making slave wages and living under the perpetual thumb of socialism.

I grew up a New Orleans Saints fan and lived through horrible season upon horrible season. As a result, pro football was always a distant second to Alabama football on the importance scale. I decided if the NFL players and their SJW-loving commish weren't going to respect the country that gives them the freedom to violently collide with each other for our entertainment, I didn't have to watch them, wear the gear or ever buy tickets again.

Ace, good point about the breakup. There was this girl I dated in high school before my wife who treated me terribly. I had an excuse: She was hot and her parents were rich. My parents thought she was perfect for me and advised me not to screw it up and marry her. It was difficult to pull the trigger, but when I told her I was done, she was stunned. She'd never been dumped, she protested. I replied there's a first time for everything, got in my jalopy pickup and drove away. She was mean, spoiled and high maintenance and finally had been told no for the first time in her life. Heh.

Like the NFL, it was difficult to ponder separation. Now that it's done, much as it was that day, I don't miss it at all. I'm also glad my wife and I cut the cord on cable and enjoy our streaming life and on-air channels. Saved us $90 bucks too.

Sundays are better spent fishing, getting some quality time with my youngest son (who does play football), going to church, reading books on our porch, playing fetch with our beloved mutt Cooper and napping in the hammock under the Florida sun.

441 ace, I think you're leaving out one vital reason for sports fandom, and that is HATE!

But, it's the healthy kind of hate, because it's irrational and even the fans know it. Bear/Packers or Yankee/Red Sox. That kind of rivalry keeps people emotionally invested in a team even if they're not otherwise any good, because nothing warms a Southy's heart more than beating those despised Yankees. But they don't hate all New Yorkers because they know it's irrational and a little extreme.

It's a healthy outlet for unhealthy tribalism. It's where foam-finger waving belongs. It's where in group versus out group thinking creates positive bonding.

When applied to the broader society through politics, it becomes a sick disease that divides neighbors and wrecks countries. That's where we're at.

Mixing politics in with the escapism that is sports was never going to be a good thing (unless it's the Olympics and even then not so much) and Goodell is a dunce for not recognising that.

449 I have to echo the statement that once you make the break, you won't even miss it.

I think for a lot of fans (not all) its more about the event, the friends, the snacks etc than the actual game. The game is more an excuse to do that other stuff. I mean, MLB is over (except post season) so that won't replace it exactly but you can watch lots of different sports these days with smart TVs. Find some rugby or Aussie Rules Football or something

We haven't watched any NFL games since last Sunday, and my husband is main driver behind it. Spent a lovely day outside yesterday, got some yard work done and other house projects done. Had a few beers and snacks on the deck in the sunshine and didn't miss it at all. Didn't even hear that our former team lost til this morning.

It's like the professor at Legal Insurrection says - loveless marriage - we really just don't care anymore.

Looking forward to hockey starting but sadly some of this is going to seep in everywhere:

461 Not seeing anywhere that Petty is dead.

He's 66, just finished a tour celebrating 40 years of his band. That can take it out of you, big time.

As Johnny Paycheck told me in a hotel room in 1979, "The road is a dangerous place, man. You can die out here...or worse."

462 384 One consideration is that Paddock is merely the drop pistol of a much more involved plan. Sort of like Lee Harvey making head shots on a moving target with an unzeroed rifle.

Oswald did it. The reasons for the obfuscation around Oswald were because the US Government knew he was a whack job COMMUNIST that had actually defected to Russia. He was a fan of Fidel Castro and Cuba for gosh sakes.

If all that came out by December 1, 1963, don't you think there would have been lots of calls for War with Russia?

War with Russia. THERMONUCLEAR WAR with Russia. Back when everyone had Big, Big, Nuclear weapons. When 5 and 10 Megaton weapons were standard issue, and 30-50 Megaton Weapons were all the rage.

I wouldn't hesitate to lie to stop the possibility of that happening. Nuclear war in 1963 would have extinguished civilization in North America and Eurasia. Think Fallout.

468 Another failure of the NFL was it sitting back while NY State decided to sue fantasy football betting programs. Fantasy Football is/was the solution to the problem of keeping interest even when your team has long lost any chance at a playoff game. But FF is a short fad unless it has something else, which was skin in the game that comes from betting. The skin in the game keeps the FF player when his fantasy team also lost any chance at a playoff game. The betting sites added other dimensions to make FF fresh each week. Then the corrupt NY AG saw a chance to cash in while suing a vice. The NFL had no problem with it.

476 >>>I think for a lot of fans (not all) its more about the event, the friends, the snacks etc than the actual game. The game is more an excuse to do that other stuff. I mean, MLB is over (except post season) so that won't replace it exactly but you can watch lots of different sports these days with smart TVs. Find some rugby or Aussie Rules Football or something.

Games night/games day sounds dorky, but give it a chance.

The problem with a games day or games night is that other people think it's dorky, so it's hard to get them to learn the rules of a game (like Pandemic or Fury of Dracula), but once they do, they love it.

Hard to get them to though. I think there's an idea out there that you're just trying to get them to play some kind of starter version of Dungeons and Dragons.

They're mostly right, of course, but a few of us horrible types did manage to get hired.

486 "What exactly did they want to happen so they would stop kneeling?"

Nothing. That's the thing of it. As far as I can tell, they just want people to feel bad and guilty.

I don't watch football, but this entire kerfluffle has been very compelling to me (for reasons of people actually rejecting patriotism, then trying to pass it off as something else), and I have followed it all closely.

We had dinner with daughter and her boyfriend last night to celebrate our 40 year anniversary. First thing they did was to ask hubby if he was boycotting the NFL.

Last I mentioned him and NFL on some forum was to say he was a mild-mannered, not particularly political guy, but he was beginning to get annoyed.

Well, hubby surprised me by saying to them that he did not watch on Sunday, or on Saturday.

A robust discussion followed, where boyfriend pronounced it all "disgraceful," and daughter sheepishly admitted she watched a game. I told her they wouldn't know that, since she's not a Nielson person, and that only if she paid for a game or bought merchandise would they know.

Well, this was all very surprising to me. Hubby generally tells other people what he thinks and does before he tells me (an oddity, I know) and I don't push him much on things, or tell him what I think he should do, on stuff like this. And also it was interesting to learn that daughter and boyfriend didn't like any of it, either. So everybody is on the same page.

So . . . good!

They are pond scum. Lower than pond scum.

I hope the NFL collapses. They had already grown into a monstrosity & ruined football years ago.

Let them self-destruct & maybe we can get real football back.

Right to free speech my hairy butthole.

Virtually no one has said that these cocksuckers don't have the right to free speech, to include kneeling during the anthem. No. One.

Go ahead, you spoiled brats. If you feel it's important to kneel or lock arms during the anthem, go ahead. If it's a violation of NFL rules, that's between you, the owners and the league.

But by the same token, the NFL audience is perfectly free to call you spoiled ingrates, turn the channel, and find something else to do on Sunday afternoon.

He reminds me of Captain Queeg on the Caine Mutiny, Humphrey Bogart screaming about "who took the strawberries?"

Goodell took his eye off the ball years ago, and what is happening now is a result of that inaction.
