Thread before the Gardening Thread: Counting Carrots [KT]
The author rips apart a single table from the paper:
"Attractive Names Sustain Increased Vegetable Intake in Schools" by Wansink et.al. (2012). It presents a simple thesis: change the name of 'carrots' and 'beans' and 'broccoli' to something exciting that the kids are doing (I don't know, 'Buzz Lightyear chard' or 'Pokemon kale' etc.) and children will eat more of it. The paper has 99 citations at present.There seem to have been a few glitches in their methodology for determining if kids would eat more veggies if they were given exciting names. There are a bunch of statistical details on the study methods at the link, for those inclined to get into the details, but the funniest bits for the less-nerdish among us may be negative carrots and:
If you haven't read the original paper, or have forgotten it by now, let me refresh your memory: our original values describe the amount of carrots served to elementary school children (ages 8 to 11) at lunch in a control condition. And, apparently, at least one of them is a Clydesdale horse. What other animal thinks it can eat 60 carrots? Also note: this is in the control intervention to get schoolkids to eat MORE carrots. I think this child is sorted, frankly. Even considering the size of 'baby carrots' (which are little orange carrot-tubes lathed off real carrots so they are geometric enough to be acceptable to Americans, who largely treat vegetables as a concept), this is a thoroughly confusing amount of vegetables.I think that New Real Peer Review is one of the more worthy uses of Twitter. How else would we have learned about this challenge to the bogus carrot data? Any other scientific bloopers stand out in your mind lately? It is however, tomato season. I love tomatoes so much I could marry them. All shapes and sizes and colors (ripe, I mean). The little tiny yellow sunnies, and the big misshapened heirlooms, that almost taste like beef when you cut into them and eat them like a steak.
Veggies are wonderful as they are. I have no interest in any bogus science, which appears to me more like an experiment in mind control, and nothing like a study on how to get kids to eat more vegetables.

The NYT did a lengthy multi-part series on "Where did the Haiti aid go?" I think it was a "5 years later" thing, so it was pretty objective, believe it or not.
Donor nations did not think the Haitian govt could administer the aid themselves. Period. So it was administered by private contractors. That makes sense, but it caused delays & added greatly to overhead.
The short term, emergency relief effort ( food & tents, etc) might be graded at about B-, maybe. The longer term nation building stuff? Probabably graded D- or so. A lot of those ptojects were poorly conceived, AND required Haitian govt follow-up... with all that that entails.

It should mean, here's what the research shows, now go apply it to your clients, and see if it works or not. If it does, keep doing it, if it doesn't find something else that does.
What it often means though, is the powers that be tell you this is "evidence based" because some cock and bull research was done, so it has the stamp of approval. So when you try it with your clients, and it doesn't work, too bad, you WILL keep doing it anyway, because it's EVIDENCE BASED!!
And then in the field, where the work is getting done, you have to send bullshite data up to your funders/corporate minders/accrediting bodies (whatever the case may be), while still trying to help your clients, doing what in your expert judgment, is working, regardless of what the so-called "evidence based" theories say is supposed to work.

Case in point - Screening of newborns for serious congenital disease by measuring oxygen levels with pulse oximetry (finger clips). The background research and data collection was initially done by well-compensated research personnel using a tightly defined technique at rigidly controlled times following birth. A 'cutoff' value was statistically established. This cutoff value determines if further testing needs to be done.
That research then got encoded into legislation (at the state level), so that now all hospitals with newborns have to perform the screening. But lo and behold, Nursy McNurserystaffer at Podunk Community Hospital and Regional Backhoe Rental Emporium slaps the probe on the baby's hand, takes the first number she sees and records it, then rushes off to the break room to finish her Big-Bucket-O-Chicken lunch.
Sloppy data collection by people who have no investment in the data collection process gives crap data. But the Legislature gets to pat themselves on the back for enacting 'Science'.

One thing that pissed me off to no end was a mandatory infant test in New Jersey. For every correct positive, they had 10 times as many false positives.
My daughter got a call from her Drs office after initial test. They told her 'nothing to worry about' but they wanted her to come back with newborn for second test with different method.
So I got the call. Obviously she was off the wall with worry. I did a little research, saw the percentage of false positives and called her back. ''I'm no gambler'' I told her, but I'd bet the house her newborn did not have the condition. I was right.

I got to see them unload one of those Clydesdales at Bike Week some years ago. Just one in a full-sized, custom semi-trailer. They pulled up on a side street around the corner from the Boot Hill Saloon with no warning or fanfare or anything. Didn't take long for a big crowd to form.

Yea, I see those. Mostly what I see is deep hurt & pain. But men don't process the same as women. Anger & gallows humor is how they cope.
Part of it, I think, is that for men, their primary relationship is their wife as far as emotional support. So when that breaks down, they are left adrift. Where as women have lots of emotional support systems.
I'm speaking in generalities here. There are men who are just jerks, and don't care. But the men I see here don't fall into that category...at least not that I've seen.

Donor nations did not think the Haitian govt could administer the aid themselves. Period. So it was administered by private contractors. That makes sense, but it caused delays & added greatly to overhead.
The short term, emergency relief effort ( food & tents, etc) might be graded at about B-, maybe. The longer term nation building stuff? Probabably graded D- or so. A lot of those ptojects were poorly conceived, AND required Haitian govt follow-up... with all that that entails.

That's a good analysis of the situation.

Its a worse idea than you think, even putting aside the car-like cost. First off, where are you going to keep the thing? Its gonna weigh a hundred pounds or more and its the size of a human being. Loads of fun when the kids or the maid or houseguests find a sexbot in the closet or under the bed. In the shower. Fun times taking it to the repair shop.
Then after a while its going to get boring, and you'll want something different. Eventually you're trying to find a way to hide the centaur bot or the orc girl bot. Or if you're really sick, that black market schoolgirl one.
Even if somehow its not societally ghastly to have a machine you hump, those off-models are going to be a bit difficult to explain to your buddies. Sure, the Bree Olson lookalike bot might slide, but the goat one?
And each one costs tens of thousands of dollars, or you can get a lousy Chinese knockoff you have to pull the string on the back to make moan, but they messed up the voxbox and it sounds like a man instead so you just leave it alone.

They do pump your main body cavity full of CO2, though, so your guts don't stick together. That doesn't give you gas, as you might thing (the pressure such as it is is outside the digestive tract), but it's an odd sensation and does not go away right away. PR took a direct hit from a cat 5 hurricane. I don't see how anybody can expect to have power after that. when Hugo came by us we lost power for 5 days and we did not take a direct hit. People living down at the beach and in the direct path lost power for months. you have to expect that and be prepared for it.
I got by for 5 days with no power with no problems.

Helicopters can be tricky to use in an urban area. No clear space to land, often. Some loads you can sling in, but then you need experienced hands on the ground to handle the slung loads, and how are they going to get there in a timely fashion?
And helicopters are expensive to operate. Even a small one rents for about a thousand bucks an hour. Absolutely worth it if the task is get an ice chest of vaccine in to a remote clinic. Not so much to haul a $500 Harbor Freight generator to service station with only 2000 gallons of gasoline in storage, and no way to get more.
Mules. And hand labor. Guys pushing wheelbarrows.

Military units are helpful but at some point the logistics of supplying the large units deployed take up as much time and effort as it does distribute relief to the needy.

My old ship had two shore power connections. Normally these were for bringing power in. But you can place plants on the line and send power out through these same connections. IIANM we could run 5KA though those connections. While we were over in the IO a hurricane struck the French colony of Mauritius. we went in and supplied power and water to them for a week until they could get stuff running again.

Woo-hoo! that little job is done.
Old and busted: ceiling lamp in bedroom on pull-chain socket, connected by lamp cord to a wall outlet. Socket mounted on disused ceiling vent grating.
New and hot: ceiling vent grating replaced by board with octagon box in middle; same pull-chain socket mounted on octagon box (for now). Ceiling lamp now wired through wall switch in original location, and tied into same circuit that the wall outlet that formerly fed it is on. All wiring done with Loomex in the attic, and terminated in metal junction boxes as per code.
And it's hot and dusty up there in the attic, I can tell you.
