Guercino cleopatra.jpg

Cleopatra and Octavian
Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri)

When I first saw this work I guessed the wrong period. The artist was active in the first half of the 17th century; almost 100 years later than I thought. It doesn't have the depth of expression that I would expect, although some of his other works are more expressive.

Yeah...I'm stumped, but that's nothing new.

62 I like the poses and use of color in Barbieri's paintings whether large scenes or closer, more intimate works. His "Capture of Christ" is excellent. But there is a N. C. Wyeth-like illustration feel to his paintings. Perhaps it's the action and movement Barbieri captures or the quality of the colors. I'm not sure. This is not a knock on the painting, just an observation.

65 This is a type of Baroque that looks like it has a mix of Italian and French schools. I see a bit of Caravaggio's influence, which wouldn't be surprising as they were both Italian. But there seems to be a lot of Nicholas Poussin here too. He and Guercino were contemporaries. Poussin was the leader of the French School at the time.

There was a huge push at the time to depict classical subject-matter again, and a fast-developing belief that historical heroes were to be depicted as unemotional. It lifted these heroes up above the dirtiness of mere mortals, making them worthy of respect. Their deeds were done out of necessity and reason, not with gauche feelz.

Well, he's all up in armor, so the greaves around his shins kind of follows. But he's not wearing the classic Roman military caligae (kind of a semi-enclosed sandal with heavy hobnailed soles). Wondering if it was thought to be vulgar for high-ranking Romans to wear caligae, except exclusively on the battlefield.

What's more likely is that, given all the other inaccuracies in the painting, the artist simply fucked up.

I think it probably depends more on the leadership: who are the owners and the leaders of the players? If the owners put up with the protests and there's a protest leader among the players then they're most likely going to take the knee. It would be interesting to see if some external group is organizing this.

They didn't even hear him specify it was because of too much government intervention.
Listening to any one who holds a different opinion is, oddly enough, not a media strong point.

204 I think it probably depends more on the leadership: who are the owners and the leaders of the players? If the owners put up with the protests and there's a protest leader among the players then they're most likely going to take the knee. The ancient Greek historian Plutarch said that she was no great beauty but that she had a nice voice, and the ability to charm men with her intellect. But those are unreliable because it said she was made to look more "manly" on the coins for PR purposes.

These idiots - like so many others - think free speech means you can say whatever you want, wherever you want, without consequences.

Little do they realize that the First Amendment only relates to the citizen vis a vis the government; you can't generally be prosecuted for your speech.

Posted by: Jack Sock at September 25, 2017 10:28 AM (N7KlP)

This is true. However, I don't know if NFL owners have given those orders. If they don't, or if they give or imply their permission, I don't see how the First Amendment would not apply. It is not illegal to sit down or otherwise not participate in the singing of the national anthem. We may not like it but I think it's within their rights.

When it's employer vs employee ("you can't bench me because I kneeled"), using the First Amendment as your justification is non sequitur.

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara

There are at least 3 NFL's.

1) the one that the fans see, in uniform, playing the game
2) the one the owner's see, as a bunch of employees that are paid to perform on the field
3) the one that the player's see, as a bunch of professional athlete's that aren't respected enough for their parade of dumb personal behaviors and dumb ideas.

There are, without a doubt, some really smart guys that play and have played football.
In the 1960's, the Brown's quarterback actually had a PhD in mathematics and taught at CWRU after he retired.

Paul Brown used to administer an intelligence test to potential players, because he didn't want stupid players on his team... they wouldn't read the playbook!

There are more than 1,500 active players in the NFL, so the odds are pretty good that a few of them are bright.

But I would argue that athletic intelligence is a very specific thing. QBs and OTs need to have nimble minds to see the defenses, but that might not translate to more conventional and useful intelligence off the field.

And judging by the number of retired athletes who are essentially destitute because they couldn't balance their checkbooks, not too many of them have transferable intelligence.

Fire these clowns, with the tacit agreement among the owners that no one else will sign them, and watch this crap go away.

Have you watched the Giants play the first three games? Most of these player announcements would actually be an improvement. Although I would put Triggly Puff at left tackle in place of Ereck Flowers, not at Center. And Lena would be in as fullback and Michelle Obama as RB. I could definitely see Lena "plowing the field" and creating a huge hole for Michelle to slash through the line and scamper for 10-12 yards before she lowers her head and puts a vicious hit on the other team's DB.

Hate to say all that as I am a Giants fan. Also hate to say "Lena Dunham" and "plow" in the same sentence - but what can you do. At least the Giants make it easy for me to boycott. I hate MNF so I will not be watching and hate the Cowboys almost as I much as I hate Kaeperdick and Goodell - Oh here is a funny "Goddell is a dick" meme:

I would guess that there are very few linemen playing in the NFL from the Ivy League. I would guess that a big plurality would be from the SEC, Big 10 (or 14, but who's counting?), ACC, Big 12, PAC 10 ....the so-called "power conferences", which end up recruiting the biggest and fastest players anyway. College football sorts them out, so only a small percentage of the best college players actually play in the NFL.

In SC an inmate must serve at least 1/3 of their sentence before they are eligible for a good conduct parole. So it would be 7 months. Provided he doesn't start showing his dick to everybody in prison.

True point ... but they do extend everywhere it is not forbidden by someone else (such ass an employer).

But this is a straw man argument because no one (of note) is saying they don't have free speech or that this is the issue.

The issue is with the NFL including in the ticket price, being "flipped off" by commie/leftist players calling middle class white fans bigots/racists etc.

That the NFL allows players to insult their patriotic fans is being called out.
It is the NFL that is choosing to make anti-America commentary part of their ticket price, just as the networks are doing to the viewers.

Trump has a good approach ... a team that wants fans, can fire the players that sit. (the team brand is a goofy thing anyway, since players come from everywhere, and move from team to team ... it's not like the Bears are all from Illinois or anything ... just random guys wearing a costume, and now they don't even pretend to like the fans)

He acts like he's such a football expert. He knows a few owners and has sat in owner's boxes--but that only makes him a jock sniffer.

I know. Her rant at the Emmy's last week was horrendous.
And I always thought her telephone operator act was tedious. Didn't know she like the Steelers.

I believe Rush has pretty much already joined the boycott, and he doesn't talk about football except for this topic anymore.

WTF does this flap have to do with free speech?

There's a protocol followed for the performance of our National Anthem.

Deliberate disregard of that protocol isn't illegal, but it DOES show disrespect for the song, the country it represents, the symbol of that country and the people who sacrificed to ensure the country endured.

Don't worry. We've known this for years...

Posted by: Timon at September 25, 2017 11:44 AM (NTM5E)

542 It seems we have figured out that the players have the right to kneel, lock arms, whatever...and we have the right to say they are jerks and not watch.

Seems simple and forthright. No need for discussion. Also they are jerks no matter what skin tone they have.

Also the NFL does have a rule that players must be on the field for the Anthem. The rule also states what players "should" do during the Anthem. "Stand at attention with helmet under left arm and no talking" is part of it.

The NFL ignoring it's own rules and has abdicated its leadership position on this activity.

Over at ZeroHedge a story about fans burning NFL jerseys.

Please continue to go all in with the left on the culture wars NFL owners.

Support your BLM/Antifa players and say "screw you" over and over again to the people who make you money.

Then contemplate one of the laws of physics: Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
